Gun Thread (12-15-2013)
— andy

Well Done, Morons

That Denver Post stealth edit of the Arapahoe shooter's socialism blew up on Twitter yesterday, and it was caught by Moronette 'Wordy girl' in yesterday's morning thread. I tweeted it to Bob Owens, who also had the "Socialism" version of the story, Instapundit retweeted that tweet, Owens updated his story and started hammering the Denver Post on it and, well, it just kind of took off, leading to this idiotic statement that Ace covered yesterday:

As it turns out, this guy seems to have not had much of a problem talking with his classmates about his affinity for statist ideologies.

Senior Chris Davis, 18, was among many students Saturday trying to make sense of Pierson's shooting rampage.

"He was a weird kid," Davis said. "He's a self-proclaimed communist, just wears Soviet shirts all the time."

You can safely bet everything you own that if he'd ever worn a Gadsden flag shirt, there'd be wall-to-wall coverage at the Denver Post, and we'd know the size, manufacturer, location of purchase and all the rest by now.

Gun-Control Dishonesty

A must-read by the always excellent Charles C. W. Cooke:

Earlier in the year, as the gun-control movement tried clumsily to transform an abomination into a cudgel, the Washington Post’s Kathleen Parker distilled its problem into a single sentence. “Nothing proposed in the gun-control debates would have prevented the mass killing of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School,” Parker contended plainly, “and everybody knows it.”

This was abundantly clear at the time, and it is even more so in retrospect. And yet I must nitpick ever so slightly with Parker’s excellent contention, for it is missing the crucial word “almost.” Almost everybody knows it. The public seems to know it. Legislators seem to know it. But, judging by the abundance of vexed anniversary columns, a significant cabal of journalists and activists have never got the message. A year later, their cry is as it was at the outset: Why won’t we act?

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That's the Colt Python .357 magnum revolver. I'm more of an S&W man myself when it comes to wheelguns, but the Colt's a nice piece.

Help An 'Ette

I got the following request by email from 'Miss Maureen', and I know you guys would love to lend a hand:

With Christmas right around the corner, I'm looking for some advice on a gift for my BF and thought the Horde might be able to help.

We've got an AR which is sadly unadorned. I'd like to get at least a combo scope and light for him this year, but am 100% clueless when it comes to what's good and what's a good price. (I know he wants the light to have a strobe.) Also, what are some other cool, useful add-ons?

I thought a discussion of the best stocking-stuffer accessories might be fun.

I completely agree (and would suggest picking up a few standard-capacity magazines like this beauty from Magpul for stocking stuffers. Because you can never have enough mags.)

What say you, horde?

1 The Colt Python  is the best .357 ever made.  If you can find one in good cndition wou will pay a mint for it.  I know someone who has one unfired still in the box.

It's not the grips, it's the location of the cylinder release and the direction the cylinder drops from the pistol.

The whole setup feels awkward...completely unlike my 1911, which seems as if it was built for lefties. The mag release is perfect...just perfect. And with an ambidextrous safety it's exactly what I need.

14 What a beautiful pic. Extend the barrel a couple inches, "enhance" the caliber, make it stainless & beef it up a bit, add some Pachmayer combat grips and it looks like an old friend I had to sell about 25 years ago. The blued version with factory wood is prettier but...

19 >> The Colt Python is the best .357 ever made. They were expensive as hell, but the action straight out of the box from the factory was superb. For the money, though, I'll take an S&W K or L frame, a spring kit, and a couple of hours of action polishing at the gunsmithing bench every time.

23 I picked up a Magpul MOE fixed carbine stock for my Spikes and Wesson midlength, figuring that a solid mount was more important to me than the adjustability of the sliding stock. The length-of-pull is ridiculously short, something like 11-1/2" inches. Magpul knows what they're doing, so I have to believe that having your nose on the charging handle must be SOP for AR's. Or are you assumed to be wearing some sort of body armor or vest because you have an AR? I'm not tacti-cool, so I ordered a thicker buttpad in the hope it'll make the stock usable. For now the sliding factory stock is back on.

BTW, I'm only 5'8", so it's not like I've got orangutan arms. Worst comes to worst, I'll use the stock on a leftover parts/lightweight/winter rifle future build.

24 Good to know, CBD. I am a leftie too, and Mr. BTEG was considering buying me a revolver. I have tiny hands and have a hard time racking the slide on a semi-automatic. But it sounds like the revolver might have its own issues I'd have to clear.

29 I have a S&W .357 Model 19 service revolver with a four-inch blue steel barrel (which I think is the same gun you have posted). It's a six shot revolver with no safety; if you use blunt-tip high-grain count defense loads it will flat out ruin a burglar's evening, as in kill them with one shot to the chest. VERY loud though. I can't even imagine what it would sound like indoors.

32 Owned a 6-inch Python that I later sold when I was short of cash (man, do I regret that decision!!!!) Other than a nice optical sight for the AR-15/M-4 platform, the only "accessory" I would recommend is a tactical sling that will allow you to keep the rifle at low ready while slung. I don't like the vertical fore-grips (just adds weight at the muzzle for no advantage) and attached lights (advertises your location to the bad guy). If you look at the guys really using them in combat, they tend to not have a lot of crap attached to their rifles.

36 On the Christmas idea question -- When it comes to rifles, all of my time and money go into long-range accuracy. Scopes, barrels, lapped bolts, upgraded triggers. It's insane, I know. It's almost as bad as having an addiction to high-end DIY audio equipment. Which I also suffer from.

Posted by: Phinn at December 15, 2013 06:18 AM (KOGmz)

37 The AR cool-guy tactical stuff is okay, but a thousand rounds of whatever it eats never goes amiss, either.

That being said:  Hogue makes very nice pistol grips.  Magpul makes excellent stock systems and the angled fore grip that I like so much on my AK.

Optics?  Pricey, but an ACOG by Trijicon is awesome.  Get one with the fiber optic strip; it runs off ambient light, no batteries.

38 Taro , I've thought the same thing about myriad rifles and shotguns . I'm 6'5" , so I expect to have problems with length of pull but some firearms are ridiculous . I was checking out one of the new Winchester turkey shotguns a few years back and even with light loads it was guaranteed to drive my thumb into my nose with every shot . If I'd shot 31/2" turkey loads in it , I'd probably have been concussed from the recoil . Needless to say I didn't buy that one , even though it was made by FN , which made it tempting .

Us brutish men often bullshit our way through running a firearm by using brute force. But in the end it's about technique rather than strength, as in just about every aspect of shooting.

Check out Kathy Jackson's take on racking the slide. A really good article on operating the slide for shooters with smaller hands and less upper body strength.

77 I've now got a midlength AR and a carbine. I wanted to play with different buffer weights, since I'm pretty set on sticking with XM855 and XM193 ammunition, so I don't need the usual over-gassing to compensate for cheapo ammo. Since I had two stock carbine buffers, I figured the cheapest way to get some variety would be to order an H3, then take it and one of the carbine buffers apart and swap weights. So I swapped one of the tungsten weights in the H3 with one of the steel weights in the carbine buffer, yielding an H2 and an H(1). The H is going in the midlength and the H2 is going in the carbine.

The swap was fairly uneventful. Use a roll pinch punch to drive out the roll pin, then twist off the rubber stopper. The one on the H3 was so stubborn I had to chuck the stopper section in a vise and twist it like a madman. Fairly nerve-wracking, but I didn't destroy it.

91 If you're a casual shooter, not using your rifle for work/duty/competition there's no need to fork over the money for an ACOG, unless you want too. They are wonderful systems but pricey for the casual user. Is he wanting magnification at all? Does he prefer a red dot or reflex sight, holosight? What is you price range? What will it be used for? There's lots of variables to consider. More expensive doesn't necessarily translate to better when it comes to firearms or accessories. Frankly, it would be better to take him to the gun stores in your area, give him a budget and let him pick it out himself. He'll get what he wants, there isn't any possibility of an issue after the fact with not getting him what he wants and hell love you all the more!

101 This week we had excitement in our family. Our daughter's ex showed up at her house with a rifle and 3 handguns and decided to try to take her and the children hostage(?). She gave the 10 year old the cell phone and told her to take her little brother and hide in the basement and call the police. He was screaming about killing her and the kids and himself and if he couldn't have her no one could, etc... The police showed up and finally took him away, no one hurt, but we got our daughter and grands out of the house and out of town. It seems he and his friends have been stalking her for a while now, but she didn't want to worry us, she thought she could handle it. She is safe now but he was bailed out of jail by his parents and they are saying he is mentally ill. He doesn't know where she is but he knows where we live, but he also knows we have our CCH and a loaded shotgun by each door, and 2 100 lb dogs that would eat him for lunch. We have been told by the police to keep an eye out for him or his friends. I am not worried, we can take care of ourselves. I am worried about my 87 year old father who lives with us. How do I protect him if necessary. He doesn't want a gun in his room, he says he's too old to shoot accurately. How can I keep him safe if TSHTF?

Re:  66, why they don't make Pythons anymore?

This also goes to Vic at comment #1.

Answer is simple, but has a few layers.  Sorry Vic, the Python wasn't the best .357 ever made.  It was just the most beautiful.

Fact is though, that the frame it was developed from the Colt Police Positive, just simply wasn't robust enough to handle full-house .357 loads.  Couple thousand rounds in, and the firing pin bushing plate in the frame would be set back and peened into the frame by the rearward pressure exerted by the case head in recoil.

This resulted in micro-fissures radiating out from the firing pin bushing, and thus ruin the frame.

S&W's vaunted Model 19 suffered a similar weakness, but around the frame area where the barrel screwed into the frame.  The K-frame, evolved from the S&W Model 10 M&P, just didn't have the beef in that area to handle the stresses.

The "L" frame was S&W's answer to that problem.  (Mode 585, etc).  Added metal to the topstrap and barrel thread area, and made the cylinder a skosh larger in diameter, thus strengthening the chamber walls between chambers.  However, the lockwork was, and is, directly interchangeable with any K frame variant, as is the grip-frame, too.

Just to note, Colt's later guns, the Anaconda and Cobra, were derived from the larger, heavier Trooper Mk III frame, which itself dates back to the M-1917 Colt in .45 ACP.

The BEST .357 ever made, you ask?

The first, and original S&W .357 Registered Magnum guns, and the subsequent Model 27s, ending with the "-2"  series.  Once S&W got away from the pinned barrels and counterbored chambers, other things like the quality of polishing dropped, as did the degree of hand-tuning of the lockwork.

The other "BEST" .357, on a purely practical basis, would have to be the Ruger GP-100.  Not because it's beautiful.  It's not, though it isn't ugly.  Its because it's damn near indestructible, as per Ruger's norm.

So, for perspective:  Python and S&W 19.  Love 'em, cherish 'em, shoot 'em a few times a year, as a tribute.  But go with the beefier .357s for the round count, and you won't go wrong.

And for you left handed folks out there?  Do be advised that Charter Arms makes a 5 shot snubbie, (roughly equivalent to S&W J frame), called the "Southpaw".  It's a mirror image gun, being entirely left-hand friendly.

Hope this all helps!

111 I'm not really a gun "nut"; got the basics (handgun, hunting rifle, shotgun), but I just picked up a 1942 Mosin M91/30; fully functional.  Made in Russia for WWII, matching numbers including bayonet.  This is a beautiful (but heavy) gun.  And very affordable.  Holding history in your hands with this - wondering where its been, what action its seen, the front-line soldier who fought with it.  My best buy of the year.

Posted by: Sketchy at December 15, 2013 07:05 AM (7RHQv)

112 I'll throw in my additional recommendation for an Aimpoint. I have Aimpoint PROs on both of my "social" rifles, they've been mounted and turned on for 2 years now, batteries still going strong. The thing about both 5.56 and 7.62 NATO is that with their ballistics, you can hold dead center out to 300 yards and POI is all minute-of-DRT. The PRO comes with the QD mount (with surprisingly good return-to-zero) and lens caps. When turned up to 9, the dot is very bright and daytime usable. Even if it gets washed out by very bright sunlight, you have the capability to close the objective lens cover and, because you're running with both eyes open, the dot just superimposes over the vision from your other eye, so daytime/nighttime---it's great for both. I've seen them recently on sale for in the $350/$360-ish ranges. Couldn't recommend the PRO more.

Damn sock!

Anyway, Vic.....not only was the Python the most beautiful .357 ever made, but it was also a time-sink at the factory, due to the extensive hand-fitting and tuning of that lovely action.

I still prefer the feel of how a Smith action stages and stacks, as compared to the Python.....but that's not to say that the Python wasn't smooth as oiled glass.... it was!

Like I said, an absolutely lovely gun, but just not a heavy duty shooter.

Mosins are a hell of a lot of fun. But for the historical factor, the Finn Mosins are even more interesting, IMO. All Finns have served with at LEAST two different armies from two different nations. And there's an almost 100% chance with a Finn that she was used on the battlefield to shoot either Nazis or Commies in the face. Often times, both.

And that just warms my evil, black heart.

The down side is that they're more expensive than the 91/30s, generally around $350-400 a pop. But they're even more accurate than the Russians. Damned tack drivers. About the only way to get a more accurate milsurp is with the Swiss K rifles (K11, K31 etc).

Picked up my antique (1896) unissued 1968 refurb Finn M39 from the Burns family several years ago, and it's my favorite rifle to shoot. Bar none. They don't have any more antiques, but they still have decent shooters available to CandR holders and FFLs.

He sets up on a small levee at one end of the field and pops them from 700-1000 meters out.  Says because of the distance, they don't usually spook and he can get up to ten of them before they figure out something is amiss and take off.

Is your .44 a rifle or a handgun? If it's a handgun, that would be a great back-up to the M-N if the little piggy charges. That's another nice thing about the M-N - you can drop it when you reach for the revolver.

Once SW got away from the pinned barrels and counterbored chambers, other things like the quality of polishing dropped, as did the degree of hand-tuning of the lockwork. The 2 series? My SW 357 is a 66-2 is that what you are talking about? So I have a good one?

153 127 Got a how-do-I-kill-it question. Got a feral pig problem. If you really want to get rid of them, one at a time will be difficult. Make a catch pen and get a bunch at once. Put out feed corn, get them used to coming to eat for a couple weeks, put up a four foot high side of a pen, couple more weeks, one more side, repeat until you have a four sided pen with an opening for them to walk in and out. Now you put a trap door that will swing into the pen to allow entry, but not out. They are used to eating there and acclimated to the pen and will walk right in. When you get a bunch penned up you can take them out any way you want.

154 Someone earlier made a comment about Ruger shit being made to last? Here's a great story. Son was a shotgun instructor at Philmont National Scout Ranch. They had three red label 12 ga over and unders. Two they used and one as a back up if they need it. He said they shot those guns everyday for 100 days and at least 10,000 rounds and the damn things never broke and were just as tight at the day they got them. They were off the rack field grade guns. That's a testimony.

159 On the porcines, shot placement is everything (like in all hunting). Learn the anatomy, they have really tough shoulders and vitals are a bit further south than on deer. Lotsa folks use the earhole for the aim point, DRT. less meat damage, too. Standard deer calibers should work, no need for magnums or big bores. Unless you're talking Hogzilla.

And as for revolvers locking up tight? The old Smith+Wessons were pretty damned good. I've got a 50+ year old Model 15 (Combat Masterpiece) that locks up like a bank vault.

The first time my Dad let me shoot it on my own he gave me a couple of ancient boxes of my grandfather's reloads. A former State Trooper and RR cop, he loaded them hot! Like hotter than +P+. The Model 15 ate them up like candy with no stuck cartridges. They must've made better brass back then, too.

173 I own a pair of Pythons, one from the 1970s and one from the early 1980s.  The actions are butter smooth, with wonderful triggers.  Bought one for $900 (a 6" blued job with the faintest outline of a cylinder drag line), and that was a bargain.  The second is the later model, stainless, also 6" and was purchased new in box.  I'm never selling it, so they both have been fired.  Not a believer in safe queen guns.  They're meant to be shot.  (I make an exception for guns intended to be displayed.)

Better than any revolver I've ever fired.  They're just in a class by themselves.

Spike's is mil-spec.  Dpms is cheap. RR I believe is made by dpms.

I wouldn't change buffers unless i was trying to solve a problem and i wouldn't know that without putting hundreds of rounds through it at least.

The key to racking semi-auto pistol slides is the Brass Stacker.  Guaranteed.  Look it up.

And it is situations like this which make all the gun laws in the world useless. Here is a guy, that by any reasonable standard, should have all his guns taken away, and his ass thrown into a mental hospital until he can be sorted out. Now maybe the cops seized his guns after this last episode, but if he is on the loose, he can get more, illegally, of course. And if he manages to kill or injure somebody, all the damn stupid liberals will blame it on "insufficient gun laws", when the real issue is lack of custodial care for mental cases.

187 Questions on the SIG 228:  It was my impression that they stopped making them and now they are making 229s instead.  Is this wrong?  I took the Number 2 daughter shooting at a place where we rented a number of guns and the 228 is the one she fell in love with.  She shot much better with it than anything else and she said that it just felt right.

My plan, when I get on top of my finances, is to buy her one but 229s are a lot more available than 228s.

For those contemplating a revolver, look at police trade ins.  You used to be able to get a S and W model 10 for about $100 when police agencies were trading in their revolvers for autos.  The thing about police revolvers is that many police departments have armorers and in order to keep themselves busy, they would often polish up the internal parts of the pistols so that you can often find a butter smooth double action that is a lot better than factory new.

Love my RIA, but it took a little tweeking to get right. Seriously excess extractor tension turned a good gun into a jam-o-matic. Which is probably why the previous owner sold it back to the LGS where I picked it up. Once I corrected the extractor (also, the hook wasn't properly profiled and polished), reliable as a sunrise. One more thing, the older RIAs tend to have more sharp edges that need some attention from a fine file and some sandpaper.

Every well-armed American should have at least one 1911 in the safe, chambered in 45 Auto, even if it's a safe queen. And every 1911 enthusiast should have one Filipino 1911, just for the history.

Word.

Even worse is that when cops respond to burglar alarms, it's depressingly common for them to just drive by, shine a spotlight on the front of the house and then drive away with an "all clear" when they don't see any broken windows, open doors or criminals conveniently running away with a TV in their arms wearing Hamburglar masks. When I worked for an alarm company in the early 90s, we used to field customer complaints of exactly this type of police response to their alarms ALL THE TIME.

Yeah, after my stroke I lost strength in my left hand.  It was nearly impossible to rack some of my autos using strength.  So I started to 'punch' rack them.  Hold the slide with my left hand and push the gun forward sharply.

No troubles.

Where do you hunt hogs, and do you hunt them as vermin or for meat?

211 AlbertaOilPeon, Yes, this really makes me crazy. We know he will get more guns and it's only a matter of time until he shows up at our door. He has been coddled all of his life and now his family doesn't want to take responsibility that they enabled this creature. We will do what we have to do to keep our family safe.

214 Two weeks ago, I received a 1911 holster created by awkward davies and I am here to briefly review it. Let it be known that I am not an expert with holsters, so I may be totally full of crap. That said, I am thoroughly impressed with his work. I've uploaded some relevant photos to the AoS Yahoo group. The first thought I had upon unpacking it is, "Solid." This thing is not going to fall apart with rigorous use. Ever. Davies mentioned in his e-mail to me to not expect perfect machine precision due to the fact that he's sewn this piece by hand. I, personally, can find no fault with his precision upon a close inspection, though. It is top notch. My only criticism may be in contradiction of my initial praise of sturdiness. Upon drawing my pistol, I would rather my index finger be as close as possible to the frame. Yet, a nice hefty chunk of gator skin kinda gets in the way of that and my finger is farther from the frame than I'd prefer. It's certainly not a deal-breaker, though. In conclusion: davies makes a great holster.

215 210I haven't yet, I refuse to pay for a hog hunt, and it's like some Freakin' State Sekret around here when folks have found a place to hunt em. I just recently found out about the Columbus County Gamelands, so that's where I'm looking to head over the next couple of months. Oh, and it'll be for meat. I wish I liked venison, but I...just don't. Which is why I'm so horny for hogs.

216 Oedipus, come down after New year's and do some scouting, there are several smaller game lands down here, and I am almost positive they all have pigs. The terrain here is ideal for them. I have even found sign right here inside Wilmington. Just not in my neighborhood, (dang it).

I'm ashamed to say that I've still yet to de-cosmoline my Nagants that I purchased many months ago and take them to the range. I did finally fire my Saiga 12 last week, though, and the magnum loads I put through it were enough to simulate the brutality of the 54R against my shoulder.

218 Thanks, Traye, I may take you up on that. I need to get to the range and test out a good hunting round that my FAL with cycle (I'm sitting on a mound of Federal .308, but the FAL was designed to feed ball and the fat soft points of the Federal choke on the feed ramps...trying out Remington Core-Lokt and some ballistic-tipped stuff next range trip, hope to find one that won't choke the FAL).

219 Thanks for the revue Sandra Fluke . I've found that the gator helps to reinforce the mouth of the holster , especially after long use . I hope you're able to get used to the new feel . Best wishes , awkward

220 Oedipus , try Winchester Supremes with the Nosler ballistic tip . Should feed pretty slick in a semi auto .

221 Hutch, She had to quit her job. It was too risky for her and for them. Great job but they understood the situation. She's going to finish up some projects on the computer and maybe she can freelance with them like that for a while.

222 it would be boner-worthy to own an AR platform in .243 or 7mm-08, if nothing other than for boner's-sake. Posted by: Oedipus

Thank you, Oedipus, for providing the self-justification I have been lacking for most of my firearms purchases.

I've got a Hi-Power and an M9, why the hell did I need a CZ-75?

For boner's sake!

I have an MP15 Sport, why the hell did I need to cannibalize it to build two AR's?

For boner's sake!

I have two Mosin-Nagant rifles, why the hell did I buy two more just because the receiver and markings were slightly different?

For boner's sake!

Damn, I feel better.

223 Awkward Davies, thanks for the recommendation, I will see if I can find some locally and throw that into the mix before the range trip. I've picked up some 150gr Remington Core-Lokt (guys over on the FALFiles all swear those feed in theirs just fine, so figured I'd give that a go), some 165gr Federal Premium Vital-Shok and some 168gr Barnes Vortex so far. It's an Imbel barrel with a 1 in 12" twist rate, so the 16x-gr stuff is probably about as heavy as it's going to want to stabilize.

Is this thread still alive?

What do you morons know about Taurus handguns?  They are so cheap... is this because they suck or are they worth it?
