Gun Thread April 21 2013

CONTENT

Ok I think content goes here. The United States Senate engaged in some superflous idiotic drama in the wake of Newtown (never let a crisis go to waste) and attempted to push the leftish gun-grabbing agenda with some incremental anti Second Amendment nonsensical legislation. Hurried law is bad law, see New York state.

They started with a) ban "assault weapons" (a non-sequitor, all weapons may be used to assault persons), 2) ban high-capacity magazines (washed up overactor Jim Carrey screamed about this for weeks, along with carnival barker Piers Morgan) and 4) enhanced background checks, whatever the hell those are.

The Brady bill (1993? I don't feel like lookin it up) established the National Instant Criminal Background Check system, which is managed by the FBI. If you purchase a firearm from a dealer with an FFL, you are subject to the requirements of this law before you can take possession of the weapon. In some states (like TEXAS mofos!) proof of a previous background check or possession of a state-issued concealed carry license is considered as fulfilling the requirements of this law.

So if I bought a weapon today, I still have to fill out form 4473, but they don't have to call me in. Incidentally that's the form that Buzz Lightyear didn't complete when he was buying a used AR-15 which requires you to declare whether the weapon is for you or somebody else. Also he's an idiot.

Anyway, our pal Slublog had some very smart things to say about the response of President Obama who threw down after getting beaten in this round, pitching a fit in his Rose Garden press conference surrounded by props. You should read it all, but this was my favorite part:

Still, the president wasn't just angry because he lost. He was angry because he lost to people who hold an opinion he's unable and unwilling to understand and who he seems to regard as beneath him. Last night, Obama showed us the anger that lurks under the no-drama exterior and revealed what we on the right have known for years - he's thoroughly a man of the left, and shares the left's contempt for those who believe that the second amendment is not a collective right, but an individual right for a collective purpose - ultimately, the preservation of a "free state." Our belief in individual liberty makes us inconvenient, and our refusal to acquiesce to the Benevolent and All-Knowing, All Providing Nanny State makes us barriers to the goals of the left.

Bitter clingers.

Gun Of The Week

This must be where the gun of the week goes. Ok.

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That there is a Smith and Wesson N-Frame snub-nose 357, a Performance Center 627. It's an 8 shot model (probably illegal in New York now). It's right purty and I deserve to own one. Some smart gun guy, I think it was Kim DuToit said (in the context of semi-automatic pistols vs. revolvers) "A revolver is like a fork. You just pick it up and it works."

2 Reposted from the AM open thread (it belongs here):

. . . This is a Complete FBI /Police Fuck Up. It has almost been a week since the bombing and the FBI has 'nt released shit, even though they locked down a City of three million for two days and confiscated a ton of private citizen's weapons. The parents say the FBI was all over the older brother, but they missed all the signs that he was working with Jihadi's. They wouldn't have found the younger brother unless a private citizen hadn't found him first. The clueless kid who was badly wounded ( in the neck and chest), yet somehow managed to hijack a car right in front of the Police, drive off, ( after running down and killing his brother trying to hit Police) ,elude the Police chase and find sanctuary in this boat outside the Police search area. Great work guys.

Yep, the real masterminds are likely long gone but this group of Buraq Hussein Led clowns at the FBI investigating this case will never find who really led this attack. Perhaps they and BossMaster Buraq don't want you to know.

5 Terry Kath apparently didn't understand semiautomatic pistols. From Wiki: Around 5 p.m., on January 23, 1978, after a party at roadie/band technician Don Johnson's home in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Kath took an unloaded .38 revolver and put it to his head, pulling the trigger several times on the empty chambers. Johnson had warned Kath several times to be careful. Kath then picked up a semiautomatic 9 mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry, it's not loaded". To assuage Johnson's concerns, Kath showed the empty magazine to Johnson. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple, and pulled the trigger. However, there was a round in the chamber, and Kath died instantly.[11]

I can get and extended 7 round mag, which improves my odds incrementally.

26 Kath violated at least two basic safety rules: Check to make sure the gun is not loaded (which means opening the action), and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. It's hard for me to think that he was not suicidal. Who points an "empty" gun at his own head and pulls the trigger?

28 Thanks CBD. Good point. The current grip is actually comfortable to me, as the pinky just curls up and parks under the current 5 rd mag quite comfortably. But for $40, I think I'll try the ext. mag.

35 As I posted earlier in the book thread: I just got an interesting project at work. I work in a printing shop, and a customer came in on Friday with an old book. He wants me to scan the pages and print copies on our high-end inkjet printer. The book measures 24" wide by 9 5/8" high. It's bound in red leather with marbled endpapers. It doesn't appear to have a title. On the cover is the gold embossed seal of the Royal Arsenal. The book consists of 43 color lithographed drawings of military ordnance. They are dated between 1861 and 1867. Each is signed by E. M. Boxer, who does not appear to have a Wikipedia page of his own. However, I have found a couple of references to him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_primer#Boxer_primer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrapnel_shell#British_artillery_adoption The drawings at the second link are similar to what is seen in the book. The owner believes that it may be the only copy in existence.

Comfortable isn't necessarily repeatable.

I have a Colt .22 semi-auto that isn't particularly comfortable to hold, but the design of the grip makes it almost impossible to hold differently. That makes the grip repeatable and thus accurate.

Number of Firearms Suicides, 2010: 19,392 (up from 2009)

Number of Motor Vehicle Fatalities, 2010: 35,498 (down from 2009)

Interestingly enough, when it comes to overall Causes of Death,  "Firearms Homicide" doesn't even make the Top Ten....

the goal of a good pistol grip is to force the shooter to maintain an ergonomic "cheek weld" so you shoot like you practice.

Unfortunately, we are in city limits....and the gobblers know it. They do the nyah-nyah-boo-boo dance. Now, if Mr. DeVille were truly serious about getting a turkey, he'd take up bow hunting. I'm pretty sure it would be legal for him to shoot his limit right here at home. But he says it's "hunting," not "getting." Just like it's "fishing," not "catching." *sigh*

75 Speaking of jams. That XD has the USA trigger safety right? So while I was at the line at the range yesterday, I reloaded, aimed, pulled the trigger, and the trigger wouldn't budge. Not sure if it is repeatable to determine what happened.

I waited 30 seconds, dropped the mag, racked the slide to clear the unfired round, reloaded and off and away. That round was later fired, so it wasn't a failure to fire as much as the trigger wouldn't budge that one time.

Not familiar enough with striker fire and USA trigger safety to know what happened. I had a healthy grip on it so the grip safety was fully depressed.

80 I took my new XDs to the range yesterday. 3.3 inch barrel. I was shootin' all over the place with that thing. I took out a ruler to see how big 3.3" was. To a beginning pistol shooter like me, that seems more like an opening in the gun than a barrel. I'd probably need an archery target at 5 yards to score points.

104 "Still, the president wasn't just angry because he lost. He was angry because he lost to people who hold an opinion he's unable and unwilling to understand and who he seems to regard as beneath him"

It's that, but it's also a power dynamic.

Reflect on this: Obama loves power and he always wants more.

Up until this very last election, every single time Obama ran for office, it was for a seat which was bigger and better and more powerful than the one he was in at the time.

Except now, he's peaked. It's all downhill from here. Unavoidably. And really quite rapidly.

At this time last year, no one inside the D.C. Beltway knew whether Barack Obama would still be the President come the end of January of 2013.

But at this time this year, everyone inside the Beltway knows with absolute certainty that come the end of January of 2017, someone will be President, but it will not be Barack Obama.

The duck is limping more with every waddle. And those who will still be in D.C. after January of 2017 are distancing themselves from anything which might reduce their own power as Obama's power ebbs away. They are ever so carefully posturing themselves in preparation for the post-Obama era.

And to Obama, the whole notion of a "post-Obama era" rankles horribly.

When Eisenhower gave his farewell address, he spoke specifically of how he was proud to once again resume the role of an ordinary private citizen. For Obama, that change means not pride, but humiliation. Ike was not power-hungry, wasn't a pathological narcissist and was not addicted to the spotlight. Whereas Obama is all of those things.

And a shirt made by KRAMER.

It's a mesh undershirt with two holster-pockets under each arm. I bought it about ten years ago thinking it was kinda neat.

Uncomfortable? Yes.
You might better off keeping 2 guns in the holsters instead of 1 or else you'll feel lopsided.

And I'm not sure how practical it is to keep your weapon so concealed that you have to rip your shirt off to get to it.

I wish I could remember if the slide was locked back after emptying the mag. If I reloaded that way then I got real problems.

If however, I had reloaded a partially loaded mag, which sometimes occurs, by racking the slide, and I didn't give it the full "slingshot" action, then it is operator error.

156 Kim DuToit is wrong.  I've seen revolvers fail several times.  I actually had a cylinder fall out when the retention screw (that someone else had worked on prior to my ownership of the gun) backed out.

They can also lock up butt cold.

157 On the prepper front he had a pretty good argument for a minimum household arsenal, which if memory serves was something like: 1 .22lr rifle per household, 1 defensive handgun per adult, 1 fighting rifle per adult, 1 shotgun per household, 1 .30cal full power rifle per household. I'm probably getting some of that wrong, but it really stuck with me. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at April 21, 2013 03:35 PM (MBqvE) That pretty much covers most of the firearms spectrum.....

160 Maybe it's because MA republican donors don't really take state house and senate races seriously, let alone municipal races. They are unsexy after all. But god damn. If you want to run people against democrats in the federal house and senate, those candidates have to have experience at winning campaigns. They need to have a network of supporters to draw on. They need to have name recognition that comes from success, not celebrity. We have no bench in MA. We only challenged 9 of 36 incumbent democrat state senators and something like 50 of 128 state reps. Not beat, challenged. And what do the incumbents who have huge war chests and no opponent do? They organize for their fellow Dems who do have an opponent. They send money to other states to fight swing battles. In a presidential year, they organize for the presidential candidate. The very biggest and best contribution any republican donor can make is to put his name on the ballot to challenge an incumbent, should that incumbent have no challenger. That keeps that incumbent and his money at home. I'm goddamned sick of this state party and this national party. They are not opposition parties; they are enablers. And what they enable was in full view in Boston this week.

Typically you'd use 12ga with #4, 5, or 6 shot in a turkey load.  Less chance of biting into the shot though, since when hunting turkey, you aim for the head/neck.  The feathers are too dense to get a clean kill.

166 So a question for the shootists here. I took my new XDs to the range yesterday. 3.3 inch barrel. I was shootin' all over the place with that thing. I'm thinkin' .45ACP is great and all, but with only a five round mag, there's a real good chance I'll miss the badguys alltogther. I can get and extended 7 round mag, which improves my odds incrementally. Posted by: Tobacco Road where does this fit into your collection? if it is your only handgun you might want to trade it in for something bigger. five rounds is not a lot even if it is .45 acp .

174 Truman, you're not thinking like a Community Organizer. Seriously, while we don't want to go too far down that road (there lies madness), there is a reason those commie fucksticks took over everything. You need to start a "basics" online class for people teaching them how to *start* influencing their local governments. People will sign up. Teaching people will probably help your feelings of lack of accomplishment. And yes, your local and state GOP are enablers. AFAICT the whole freaking northeast is like that - and to some extent the West Coast as well. We definitely need an aggressive grassroots. The "NRA model" is half of the story, and that half requires a lot of insider access. *You* can work on the "street level activism" model, and you have to learn from the people who already do that.

Notorious for causing ignition failures when folks get too froggy with the spring swapping. Oft times one needs to also use softer primers in their reloads and a slightly longer firing pin to make up for the loss of impulse from the weaker spring. But the point about revolvers not being infallible is correct. Anything made by man is capable of failure.

My only wheel gun now is a replica Colt Navy .36 black powder thing. Fill a cylinder, place a ball or a pointy one, use the onboard lever to crush it into the cylinder compressing the powder. Percussion caps on all the nipples, and you are ready to make boom and smoke. After about three or four cicuits of that, it is time to stop and clean the mess, done with soap and water.

She told the Gun Shop Guy that she wanted to carry in her purse - so the dick heads were trying to sell her a Glock. I have nothing against them, but bouncing around in a purse with only a trigger safety is just pure fucking dumb! Not to mention that if she ever did try and fire from inside the purse it would probably fail to feed and get hung up on something. After explaining to her hubby, how open things, like chambers, collect crap from purses, they settled on a S&W 640, she loves it with .38's. Sorry about the poke about revolvers, it is what I am going to get my wife after she passes the CHL with her semi - they just don't ever fail to go bang!

It went well. About 20 people showed, and we had an interesting mix, including more (relative) youngsters than I expected. The original plan was to end it at 8:30pm, but most stuck around until well after that.

The bar itself was fine, with cheap booze and cute waitresses.

And....no photos. Nobody seemed enthused by the idea, and I didn't want to make people uncomfortable.

Of course we talked shit about you all night for not showing up.

We not only have a God-given right to defend ourselves but a duty to help enforce the law. Those communities that recognize neither the right nor the duty are barbaric.

My thinking is that if I at least double the mag capacity from 5 to 10, even with a 3 inch barrel. I've improved the odds of dispaching the badguy.

The compacts with 4" barrel and 10 rd mags in 45ACP are still compacts, just not subcompacts. In other words, I'm not just thinking about my poor aim with the short barrel, but the low mag capacity (only 5 on mine) that comes with the teeny tiny pocket cannons, as well.

257 I don't know if this is a live or dead thread, and I don't think I'm going to be around long anyway, so...

The president didn't get mad.  He acted mad.  The two are not the same.  After the drama played out the way it did, it became obvious that this was all political theater, and it unfolded exactly as the left chose it to unfold.

Breathless shouting about "doing something," followed by tepid, pointless legislation being offered, then defeated.  Because it had no chance from the start.

President then gets to breathlessly act mad at Republicans for thwarting said legislation.  And the LIVs eat it up.

That's a win for them.  Maybe not a big win, but a win nonetheless.

It'll unfold the same way it always does, only a little worse, as it usually does:

Over the next few decades, these people will take over, and half of them will be ashamed of how stupid they were back then (now).  The ones who cannot cover up the tats from their stupid days will be somewhat limited, but (and this is where the "worse" part comes in)  it'll be more or less accepted as normal.

You and I will be old, and we'll scowl, as we  are wont to do, and somehow the next generation will manage to come along and rebel against THEIR parents' generation.  The only question is what for that rebellion takes.  Heck, they might even look like us.

There's no tactics involved. Tactics implies there's a plan to win, and "making smaller spaces where like-minded people can be comfortable" is kind of the opposite of what winners do. Secondly, you apparently have forgotten everything I've said about plans and tactics, so please stop trying to characterize me, you're doing it wrong (as in, "strawman").

Merovign... that was the media's idea a few years back... I think they deliberately didn't want the lebitard democrats to be "red" so they made them blue and conservatives, well, cough cough, the GOP red.

Subtle  psychology, how does it work?

You have to marvel at the depravity of those who will do   virtually anything at any time to influence the way you think. Posted by: Adam at April 21, 2013 02:25 PM (Aif/5)"

You know, this one always pisses me off.

No.  It is not true.  I don't field strip and clean loaded guns.  That would be insanely dangerous.

The number one rule of gun safety is "Never let the muzzle point at anything you are not willing to shoot."  That way, if you fuck up any of the other rules, the worst that happens is that you have some embarrassing story.  Presumably it also applies if you don't want to shoot your own head.

The number two rule is to assume a gun is loaded until you check it yourself.  If you don't know how to check, ask somebody who does know.  Every time you pick up a gun, check if it is loaded - no exceptions.  Even if you screw this one up, if you follow rule number one your screw up will not turn into a tragedy.

Rule number three is keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.  If you screw this one up, as long as you follow rule number one nobody gets shot by accident.

Blue states with collapsing economies are able to devote less money to mischief elsewhere.

After enough of the Makers leave, the Takers eventually start to fight amongst themselves.

And, that infighting is instructive for everyone to watch, including undecided swing voters.

W.R. Mead has been pointing out on almost a daily basis that Commiefornia is imploding from its internal contradictions. The state wants to hand out generous welfare state benefits to young and poor brown newcomers, but it is increasingly constrained in doing so because of the giant pension benefits the state is paying to retired white public-sector union members.

Mero you roll out the "run run like hell" canard...

Whatever sport it is not as though my views on this issue have not been made abundantly clear, nor yours.

I respect your intelligence, you and I have hammered out our positions.

The United States we both lament in the dying was only possible because the main fight was over about 10-15% policy deviation in the middle margins.  It was a team effort.  That 10-15 middle margin is now at a minimum a 50% policy gap.

The hard left is the left now and we on the right are still the historic full range of the right.  The election of a red diaper communist twice has shown me that the "moderate" and "mid left" American have no fear of genuine communism anymore.  Considering I'd rather kill communists than talk to them we have a pretty big divide developing here yes?

I do not *want* to keep playing this "let's pretend the left gives a fuck about the system or the United States as it existed for ~230 years" game.

Most defensive shootings take place at a range of 0 to 5 feet.

Your time might be better spent practicing drawing and presentation than improving marksmanship beyond 20 yards.

Unload your gun.  Check it.  Check it again to make sure it is unloaded.  Put it into your holster or pocket or wherever you carry it.  Stand five feet in front of a mirror (so the distance appears to be ten feet).  Look at a button on the reflection of your shirt.  Draw your pistol and line up your sights on that button.  Do it again.  Do it several more times.  Do this every day.

It should go without saying but I will say it any way, make sure that there is nothing on the other side of that mirror that you would be very upset if it was shot, like your child's bedroom.

335 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why two poor brothers with strong religious convictions had to, due to their economic impoverishment, fashion a device to protest their inequality out of an inexpensive pressure cooker. I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. She could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, " I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..." When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Mommy" she said, "why are the Republicans doing this to the country?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. I just fell into her arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes. She had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think itÂ’s too much, but seeing the strength in my daughters voice helped me to get through.

I actually think that there is something to that and it can be applied to black voters as well, although not when the first black President is involved.

What I think it would take would be something like a 10 year missionary effort that will show very few results for the first few election cycles.

One aspect of this would be to buy free election signs for any black politician who wants to run as a Republican in a predominantly black area.  The poster must have a picture of the candidate's black face and "Republican" prominently displayed.  To be honest, I think that for the first few years it would be mostly bail bondsmen and appliance store owners who realize that they have no chance of being elected and are not particularly sympathetic to Republican issues but who want the free publicity and name recognition that they could get from running for office and having signs with their name and picture put up in front of every poling place in the neighborhood.  Over time black children would grow up absorbing the concept that there are black Republicans and voting for them might be an OK thing to do, especially since there is a secret ballot and you don't have to tell your relatives that you did it.

I think that it would probably only get an improvement to where 30% of black votes go Republican while 70% continue to vote Democrat but that could be enough.  There are plenty of Democrats who only hold office because they got 90% of the black vote.

367 I am going to make the case for my pistol. Anyone who knows guns will wince  when I say what it is. I have a Highpoint 45 JHP. The bad points: it's ugly, it's heavy, it isn't cool.

Here are the good points:

9 rounds of 45 ACP in the magazine. Shoots hollow points just fine.

It's accurate - puts round after round on target when I shoot it.

It's reliable - about the only thing that will cause failures to go into battery is a limp wrist hold - but that can jam almost any automatic.

It's made in the USA (Ohio).

It has a life time warranty.

Its recoil is not bad for a 45 - simple blow back operation and a heavy slide mean reduced recoil.

It's fun to shoot.

If I run out of ammo it makes a good club.

IT HAS A LIST PRICE of  $199 brand new.

Ugly, nasty, and cheap are bad qualities for a girlfriend - but they are just the qualities I think a pistol ought to have.

If you are on a limited income you might look at one of these.

370 recently shot an xd had same problem, when slide doesnt fully go into battery firing pin is disengaged, possible causes are extracter hanging on rim keeping case from seating properly or need different weight slide spring matched to the load shooting

Posted by: rd in mississippi at April 21, 2013 03:00 PM (NcSi2)

371 also cases not sized properly will not seat all the way, look at back of slide next time it happens you will see a very slight offset to the frame, otherwise the chamber does look closed but its not

372 I just returned from my CWP course where I passed the shooting and written exams with flying colors.  My pistol performance is up dramatically since just 6 months ago when it was total shit.  I mostly attribute the better accuracy to improved grip though I'm certain better health (quitting smoking, minimizing boozing, exercising, etc.) is a factor.

373 It's a hell of a thing, killing a thread. Take away all it's got... and all it's ever gonna have.

374 I like my various .45s but I am not worth a shit after 20 yards with any of them. And within 20 yards I am thinking that is too close and I will be not worth a shit with anything that is shooting back. Posted by: navybrat at April 21, 2013 02:34 PM (t1VIV) I always figure if I'm somehow trading shots with a bad guy (who is presumably also armed with a handgun) at 20+ yards, then I'm doin' it wrong. My primary options in such a scenario include (1) closing the distance so I can get a better shot, which would be as advantageous for the bad guy as it would be for me; and (2) running away, with a very high probability of success. It always depends on the circumstances, but since I'm not a cop and no longer a soldier and certainly have nothing to prove, I'll most likely go with (2), thanks. Nothing wrong with retreat. See ya, bad guy, buh-bye. As an aside, most gunfights take place at less than 10 feet. I train at 5-7 yards, rarely farther. Also keep in mind that, at 20+ yards, it would be hard in most cases to prove that the bad guy posed an imminent threat. Yeah, I know: better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6, but shooting it out at distance begs the question: why not disengage?

375 "She told the Gun Shop Guy that she wanted to carry in her purse - so the dick heads were trying to sell her a Glock. I have nothing against them, but bouncing around in a purse with only a trigger safety is just pure fucking dumb!" The gun range here had some really sweet purses for sale designed to carry a gun in an easily accessible but separate pocket. I liked the ones with the zipper on the side so you could slip your hand in without it even looking like you had your purse open. The nice part about them, I thought, was that the main purse part where you dig around for stuff didn't have the gun in it so you didn't have the issue of showing it off when you were trying to find your checkbook or keys.

376 I took my MI concealed pistol course yesterday. One step closer to sheepdog status.

377 I should say the purse was designed to carry the gun in a *holster* in a separate pocket. I don't really like the idea of carrying in my purse because it's not really secure that way, fer pities sake, I left my purse in Nevada once. I probably wouldn't do that any more now that my kids are older and I got my brain back but still... purse snatchers?

378 Grats bEast Lansing. That's my next thing, maybe next fall, provided I can ever find ammunition ever again.

380 I am going to make the case for my pistol. Anyone who knows guns will wince when I say what it is. I have a Highpoint 45 JHP. Posted by: An Observation at April 21, 2013 06:37 PM (ylhEn) Absolutely nothing wrong with the Hi-Point .45. Don't own one myself but I've heard good things about them: Affordable, reliable, and sturdy. The downside (at least from what I've read) is that the trigger is craptastic and, in terms of handling, they are about as ergonomically awkward as it gets. However, since blowback pistols of that caliber require such a top-heavy slide, the unbalanced aspect is more or less baked in the cake. I own several pistols and revolvers, some fairly high-end. My personal favorite is a combloc surplus Polish Radom TT33 Tokarev. It's an absolute joy to shoot and cost a little over $200.

382 I'm basically a pistol guy, 1911's, Glocks and XD's but my bedside table go to gun is a Taurus 608. Eight rounds of 357mag goodness. When I'm awakened in the middle of the night I want the simplicity and reliability of a fork.

"Kim du Toit - Bedside Guns - Kim likes his semi-auto handguns, but he keeps a .44 special revolver in his bedside table. Smith & Wesson -- the original "point and click" interface. Good, practical advice on choosing a revolver, choosing ammo, politically correct ammo in states where it might matter, and keeping your kids away from your night-time defense guns. [kimdutoit] Ultimately, as I've said before, it all depends what you're comfortable with -- and if you'd rather park your Glock 17 next to the bed, be my guest. Just be sure that when you're half-awake and fumbling for the thing, you don't hit the magazine release by mistake (it's been known to happen, more than once) -- and that can happen with any semi-auto pistol.

A revolver is like a fork: you pick it up, and it works.

...

But most importantly of all, if your kid has friends over to play, lock the damn gun away. You may be able to trust your kid, but a group of kids has the collective responsibility of a treeful of drunken chimpanzees, and that includes yours. "
