Gun Thread (4-7-2013)
— andy

The Giffords-Kelly Lie Machine Strikes Again

Not content to let her husband have all the action, Gabrielle Giffords falsely implies that her assailant was not subjected to a background check.

Right now, we have one system where responsible gun owners take a background check — my husband, Mark, took one just last month, and it took 5 minutes and 36 seconds. I remember waiting a lot longer than that for the subway to take me to my office when I lived in New York City! And then we have a second system for those who don’t want to take a background check. Those people — criminals, or people suffering from mental illness, like the young man who shot me — can buy as many guns as they want on the Internet or at a gun show, no questions asked.

There are several lies here, in fact. Let's dispense with the main one: Jared Loughner passed a background check, so STFU.

Now for the rest of her bullshit. First off, I was at a gun store last weekend and watched a guy wait a hell of a lot longer than 5 minutes for his "instant" background check to come back. It got flagged for further review, and he said this happens to him every time he buys a gun. There must be something in the database that's not perfectly clean, unlike ... say ... the record of an astronaut and husband of a congressman, that keeps tripping it. He still didn't have his gun when I left the store, but the owner and other customers got a good chuckle when I joked that adding every private transaction nationwide would obviously make this process more efficient.

And, for the millionth time, gun purchases "on the Internet" or "at a gun show" are subject to all federal and state laws governing the buyer and seller. Why aren't they screaming about the "classified ad loophole"? It's the same thing.

So, once again, we have people agitating for new laws on a false premise and without examining why the existing ones don't work. See also, Democrats.

Gun Of The Week

What's this beauty?

(answer below)

Marksmanship Award

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That's the Colt M1877 "Lightning" double-action revolver in .38 Long Colt, with its distinctive bird's-head grip. The store I was in last weekend had a nice one that I would have picked up in ordinary times. Now my budget is devoted to ammo over museum pieces.

6 Okay, I was willing to give Giffords the benefit of the doubt that her husband was putting out statements in her name, now I know otherwise. Shame what happened to her, especially the bit where authorities were alerted and chose not to act so as not to embarrass his family, but my sympathy just evaporated.

37 I obtained my NRA Basic Pistol certification yesterday in preparation for my CWP class in two weeks.  The gun club through which I'm taking the classes has the NRA cert as a prerequisite.  They teach both, and they're $20 each, so it's not a bad deal.  Plus, it gave me a chance to play with my 22/45 Mk III.

But she's too mentally damaged to contribute honestly or intellectually to the public debate. Just like the deceased Paul Wellstone, she's being cynically used by the Leftists. Difference is, her body is still alive, and as long as it is, they'll have a ready-made Saint of "how-dare-you-question-the-narrative" ready to trot out for stupid op-eds like this.

Frankly Andy,

I'd love to take the arguments beyond the choir, and as an academic you think I'd have a reasonable platform to start that mess.

Sadly not so much.  I get stunned into stupid by a whole bunch of the things I hear, that it's hard to argue against it.

Hell last nigh after the police left my house for the fireworks call brought upon us by the neighbor's playing with the fireworks my libtard friend told me "we don't live in a police state."

Really, now? I'm pretty sure we live in the middle of the fucking Panopitcon.

91 Well, I have had a great week shooting wise. My hubby gave me a Sig AR 516 for my birthday a couple weeks ago. At the same time I purchased through Gunbroker a nice Smith and Wesson M&P 9c. Took the M&P and a Glock 26 to the range for first time shooting. Not too bad, though I pulled down on both guns. Need some more rounds under my belt to get used to them. Also took the AR to the range. This was a challenge for me, because it looks NOTHING like any rifle I shot back thirty years ago or more. Luckily the rangemaster ran through the basics for me. I only did twenty rounds (ammo hard to get a reasonable price) but all went in the center or 10 ring. SWEET GUN!!! I loved it! Will be practicing a lot more when I can get the ammo. Am looking at the Appleseed course for training on the rifle. Any other courses for rifle that I should look at??

92 73 Sandra Fluke's award winning golden parachute,

Yeah I guess it is time for me to fulfill my one useful function  here....

Okay the Budget 1911......

http://tinyurl.com/dyzvekm

Sarco RIA frame and slide kit for ~225...

http://tinyurl.com/cgdmutt

SARCO RIA frame only ~110 dollars...

both of the above must be shipped to an FFL and as always check local and state laws...

it *is* almost better for one to buy and build to custom specs on the 1911 simply because that way you make contact with a gunsmith and can figure out what is vital to YOU....

I want some nice custom grips...

gonna get a scrimshaw 10th MTN patch and a Cav patch on the grips on my commander...

http://tinyurl.com/d4u4pgr

SARCO RIA .38 Super 1911

price ~ 406 bucks

and from the "hmmmm" file....

http://tinyurl.com/clrs5dd

Gunbroker has a new .38special 1911 that requires wadcutter ammo...

I may buy one of those since I plan to reload .38 at some point for wife's SASS habit....

I need to look into a cylinder conversion for my Rogers and Spencer.  Being a topstrap revolver, it's much stronger than my Colts.

Since .45acp is so hard to get PLUS .22LR on the endangered list, charcoal will factor into range time a bit more.

96 "buy as many guns as they want on the Internet or at a gun show, no questions asked." What is this gun-show loophole I keep hearing about? I go to lots of gun shows here in Illinois, and they won't let you _touch_ a gun or ammo without showing a FOID card, which takes more than 3 months of background-checking by the Illinois State Police to issue. Some shows, like the McHenry IL show I went to today, won't even let you dry-fire any gun under any circumstances, even with snap-caps. Where are these gun-shows where anybody can supposedly walk in and buy any gun, no questions asked?

138 Two things. When I bought my Mossberg 500 Persuader shotgun from the local gun shop, I filled out the paperwork, showed my license and my CWP, paid for my purchase and walked out of the store. I didn't have to wait for them to call the NCIS for background check because with my CWP, I'd already had one.

Then we ordered a rifle online. We sent all the information to the local shop, fax number, purchase order number, ect., where it was coming from. When it came, the shop called me, I went down and filled out the paperwork, paid them $30.00 for their trouble and walked out with my gun.

Having a CWP as well as a driver's license really speeds up the process.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at April 07, 2013 02:08 PM (ZPrif) The mile and a half tracks can run Indy Car also, and that was the reason for building them. ISC, which is NASCAR, tried to build a 3/4 mile track in Staten Island, but the neighbors bitched so much about them turning a brownfield former industrial site into a race track and commerce center would just about ruin Staten Island. So they walked away and left the blighted property. I'm sure the hobos hanging out there are much better neighbors than having race fans come there one weekend a year. While I love Martinsville, and live an hour away, and have gone to about 25 races there, the track is dying. They barely get 40K people there for a race now, and the hotels in the area no longer sell out on race weekend.

156 I'm sitting here, typing away, when I hear a little girl screaming at the top of her lungs. Then, a second little girl started screaming. Mixed in with the screams is the bark of a dog. I haul ass out of the house and across my yard to find a little girl standing on the street corner, about 100' away, with a big dog next to her barking his ass off at her. So, she's screaming and her little sister, not far away, in her own yard, is screaming in terror. I start drawing attention to myself, screaming "bad dog!", and waving my arms and clapping my hands. Yelling "NO!". The dog looks confused and turns to bark at me. Back and forth between me and the little girl. I yell for her NOT to run. In the meantime, I am calculating in my head how fast I can get to my gun if he runs at me or turns on the little girl. Nearby, a man is mowing his lawn and doesn't even turn off the mower to assist. Finally, the dog turns away and the little girl, still terrified, starts slowly walking away until she got into her own yard and made a mad dash for the door. Finally, with the girl out of danger, the mom meets her at the door and yells, "What are you screaming about?!" I wanted to beat her ass. I still do.

You know, I wasn't going to say anything, but fuck it. All I have to say is fuck these parents. So your kid died, its tragic, it happened, and unarmed people get killed every day by fucking assholes. Whats more important is that probably no less than 750,000  servicemen died over the last 200+ years in the hell holes around the world, including some of my own family, to protect and defend the constitution. Your kid isn't worth more than those dudes, you don't get to render their sacrifice meaningless. 190 Bit of a youth movement tonight at WM. Two guys actually will have their debut matches tonight, Big E Langston and Fandango. Lot of pressure to have your first official match (outside of NXT, WWE's minor league in Florida) at WM. Huge pressure. The Fandango dude is such an over-the-top stupid gimmick that it's fun. A flamboyantly macho ballroom dancer. So far he's refused to fight for months cause everybody mispronounces his name. So now he actually have a match with Jericho - who's a legend at this point. Big E Langston is a comically over-muscled black guy enforcer. He gets a tag team match with Dolph Ziggler vs Kane and Daniel Bryan. And Kane is an impressive dude and a big right-wing libertarian type guy. For a while he spoke out about his politics, but then he went back under his mask. Big draw is the Rock and Cena. But I'm more curious to see how the new guys do. And Undertaker vs Punk. Undertaker is old and broken down and hasn't wrestled since last years WM. Curious to see what shape he's in.

How big a crook is Kelly?  Well, let's just say that first he tries to buy a handgun in Arizona with a Texas driver's license (he could do that, but the gun would have had to be shipped to a FFL in Texas for him to take possession of it); he claims a resident homestead tax exemption on his home in Texas, and claims the same exemption on his new tony $1.4 million home in Tucson; he is a registered Texas voter (is he also registered to vote in Arizona?) and it would be interesting to know if he voted in both states last November.

Question: Is there such thing as a SA revolver that has a flip out cylinder, like in a standard DA revolver? Don't know why there would be, but who knows?

247 so I now wonder who is really behind anonymous and the paid propaganda. Posted by: willow at April 07, 2013 03:26 PM (nqBYe) I haven't seen evidence that they're centralized, but I've seen evidence that they're insular, isolated, ignorant, public-school-educated North Americans and Europeans who live in an "alternative media" (Prison Planet, Alex Jones and George Noory) fueled delusional alternate world. Like Wikileaks, who looked at the terror and horror in the world, slavery in Africa by Africans and Arabs, mass murder in Asia and the Middle East, and blamed the US and its allies, the people who do the most to alleviate pain in the world (obviously nothing is *enough*, there will always be pain). Because Daddy isn't perfect, therefore they hate Daddy.

Posted by: jbarntt at April 07, 2013 03:48 PM (UNFot) I don't know of any, but then that's not my area. Most SA guns are historical recreations, not "practical shooters" in that sense (they work fine, but they're not generally modernized). Many SA revolvers are designed so that you can quickly remove and replace the cylinder - but that's an awfully expensive speed-loader. The original SA revolvers were designed for non-metallic black-powder shooting, and there's no need to rotate the chamber out for that.

254 yeah, james yun (jimmy yang wang) is a talented guy. He wrestled all over --WCW, Japan, WWE, ROH. But he's small - 5'9. And he's an American. WWE prefers bigger guys who are bilingual. Tatsu is 6'1 - not exactly big by WWE standards. But he's native Japanese. So he can help market in Japan. WWE loves Del Rio being Mexican born and able to do media in Spanish and English. I keep expecting WWE to hire some young kid just out of those Chinese acrobat schools -- like the kind Jackie Chan went to. They tend to be small, but are amazing athletes. If you can master Chinese acrobatics you can master pro wrestling. Compare the success of Del Rio to the failure of Sin Cara. Huge in Mexico but he's never learned English. That's just lazy. Probably cost him millions by not being able to do promos in English.

257 Metallic ammunition production in the US doubled from Jan 2012 to Jan 2013. You think you have problems, many competitive shooters (like IPSC) shoot 15k-30k rounds *per month*. I don't actually know what this has done to competitors, I haven't been keeping up with that news. Many of them had a pretty big stock to start with, but powder and primers are obviously not re-usable and even low-pressure loads wear out brass in less than 10-12 firings. While IPSC is not a Po Boy's game, everyone has a limit.

Sticky wicket, I keep meaning to say welcome home

Thanks, Truman. It's great to be home again! My car has to spend some time in the shop....a bearing is going out, brakes need some work, and it seems to be running a little hot, so I'll get to stay home for about two weeks. Do some laundry, drink some beer, spend time with my wife, drink some beer, play with the kids, drink some beer, hit the 'honey do' list, (which is getting really long), take my son and FUTURE DAUGHTER IN LAW out to dinner, then pack everything up, and head back to DC, and try to avoid getting a Ford F-550 duelie stuck in the mud....unlike last time.

260 Gabby Giffords wrote, "Those people — criminals, or people suffering from mental illness, like the young man who shot me — can buy as many guns as they want on the Internet or at a gun show, no questions asked."

Gabby Giffords lied. Criminals cannot buy 'as many guns as the want on the Internet or at a gun show, no questions asked.' As many guns as they want, no questions asked?

She lied. It bears repeating.

261 WWE's strategy is mainly to grow internationally. They seem to have given up growing domestically. Or at least they aren't relying on that. Their plan is more about getting a niche audience in every country. Rather than trying to grow from 5% to 10% in the US, their strategy is to get that 5% in China and India and Brazil and Russia, etc, etc. Right now WWE is focused on totally dominating the Mexican market. Mexico and Japan are the only countries that have high-level home grown wrestling promotions. And if Mexico ever got serious investment, they could challenge WWE for dominance throughout Latin America. WWE has the advantage if production values, but the Mexican promotions have the advantage that all their wrestlers speak Spanish. Helpful in Latin America. WWE wants to make sure that doesn't happen. In the last decade they've taken over the Mexican market, beating the Mexicans shows in TV ratings in Mexico. When there's a big local start, like Del Rio or Sin Cara, WWE hires them away. WWE has had less success in Japan even though they've been trying for decades. Japanese inherent xenophobia always wins, though. Japanese just prefer watching other Japanese.

262 Oh, and to a very old topic, I have heard nothing bad about Spike's Tactical rifles, and I use their T2 buffers in my rifles (vay vay good). It's an encapsulated tungsten powder buffer (instead of solid weights) that seems to compensate for varying recoil impulses from different ammo a little better than the solid weights. The greatest benefit is to carbines, SBRs and full-auto, though they work better in every application (for which the weight is appropriate). I'm chuffed about these - it's a "why didn't anyone try this idea before?" product.

270 Since it has been noted here in the past that the leftists think that dystopian novels are an actual playbook, take a quick gander at a quick synopsis of Fahrenheit 451... "Themes There are two major themes of this novel: resistance to conformity and control of individuals via technology and mass media. Bradbury explores how the government is able to use mass media to influence society and suppress individualism through book burning. In addition, the characters Beatty and Faber point out the American population is also to blame. Due to their constant desire for a simplistic, positive image, books must be suppressed. Beatty blames the minority groups, who would take offense to published works that displayed them in an unfavorable light. Faber, went further to state that the American population simply stopped reading on their own. He notes that the book burnings themselves became a form of entertainment to the general public." Your assignment is to refute these premises, or show how they are correct. Show your work.

274 You might have given me help with my son. I'm not sure if the program will repeat, but check for 'Ingenious Minds' on the Science channel. I think they're on the right track. The author of the book uses the analogy of being 'color blind' until he received the stimulation. Hours after the stimulation, he suddenly noticed that a fellow worker had brown eyes, while being able to make full eye contact -- something he had previously been unable to do). He now gives public speeches (Something I doubt that most allegedly 'average' people can do, and makes eye contact with listeners.) It's certainly worth looking into and doing more research. I know my wife, who is in the field, thinks that A/A is a condition which is recoverable. Especially with early intervention.

276 186 I used to prefer TNA, a couple of years ago. They had a lot of younger, smaller guys. They had a hexagonal ring. They had more matches in two hours than the WWE had in four hours of weekly programming. Not so much anymore. Posted by: Truman North at April 07, 2013 02:59 PM (I2LwF) I grew up watching Mid-Atlantic/Georgia Championship which both morphed into WCW, so that is what I cut my teeth on when it comes to wrestling. Back when it was going head to head with the WWE, WCW would have about 25% of the show devoted to the Mexican wrestlers, and it was phenomenal. Their downfall was taking the biggest angle in wrestling history, the NWO, and making everything about it. After that angle took over, all the Mexican and younger wrestlers seemed to go bye-bye. TNA is now doing the same thing with the Aces and 8's. It has now gotten stale, and is too reminiscent of the NWO. Unfortunately, Hogan is a one trick pony, and Bischoff should know better than to push an angle too long, but he always lets Hogan have his way.

291 I read some reviews on the "security" barrels from Mossberg. They are hard to find, and are being sold at ridiculous prices in the secondary market due to demand. Based on all the reviews I read, I'd be just as likely to get another "scuffed" barrel if I sent the first one back.

I don't usually consider myself to be a "settler", but this shotgun is purely for self defense. So like a smoke detector, I don't really worry to much about appearances. Although I'd be happier if it was perfect.

322 The corruption of language, and repetition of cliches is the most insidious thing about the current gun grabbing. About every 10 minutes there is another story about "gun violence." Never: "in another case of knife violence..." or "another fatal instance of fist violence occurred today..." The stats about how many more die from knives, and even fists, than are kiiled by all rifles (let alone the "assault rifle" boogie man) is all ye need to know about how inane the discourse has become. Or, how about the next time they talk about "gun control" we should answer "and what about speech control... or religion control" or (God forbid) "gay sex control." Heavens not that, ever....
