Gun Thread (6-9-2013)
— andy

How's The Ammo Situation?

I was at a local gun shop last weekend, and it looked like the shelves were pretty well stocked with most calibers, but limitations on the number of boxes that can be purchased at a time were still in place and prices were still high.

It seems like there's a little more supply available at the websites I shop for both loaded ammo and handloading components, too.

What are you seeing in your area?

Where Do You Shoot?

Something I never really thought much about growing up was having a place to go shoot. We always had a bunch of farmland, so a range was basically anywhere you could pop up a target where there was a good backstop. Plus, my dad was a deputy sheriff, and in small-town Georgia in the 80s, the Sheriff's department didn't think twice about deputies' kids shooting on the range unaccompanied.

I'd imagine that's changed by now with both liability and public relations concerns taking precedence (and as a side note, we had hunting guns hanging in gun racks of cars parked in the high school parking lot then too. Bet that doesn't fly now either).

But living 1,200 or so miles from the family farm, as the crow flies, isn't really conducive to a convenient trip to the range. So I just joined a gun club here in MA to have somewhere to shoot on a more consistent basis. And I did it just in the nick of time, too, since the increase in demand for all-things-gun includes club memberships around here, and there are only 10 slots out of 250 left in the one I'm now a member of.

So, no poll question on this one, but in the comments maybe throw out a mention of where you usually shoot.

Gun Of The Week

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That's the Mauser C96 "Broomhandle". A guy at the range yesterday had one that was made in 1913 but looked like it had just left the factory. An absolutely beautiful piece of machinery.

Slideshow Tour of PTR Industries

In going through my list o' links that still needed posting due to last week's absence (thanks for covering, Dave), I found this gem .

PTR makes clones of the HK91 and was the first gun manufacturer in Connecticut to announce its intention to leave the state after their reactionary, ill-conceived gun laws passed in the wake of Newtown.

1 Morning Andy. And thanks. Most common ammo seems to be only where you can find it and are you willing to pay. Plus I hate having pay freight and buy bulk.

3 I live in Ventura County California.  There are several indoor ranges one can go to but if you are going for distance (200 yards or greater) there are not too many places of which I know.  Going into a National Forest such as Las Padres is hit or miss depending on the fire conditions.

7 Almost bought a broom handle last week. It was in rough, but I DID get a 30 Luger and six more pistols from lawyer friend who's wife wants him to unload is shit. What is with lawyers buying so many guns? I have bought 30 guns from lawyer friends who are in financial problems, I hate that for them, but I got some good ones. Reasonable, not cheap.

11 I shoot mostly at the Wake County range. Built with public dollars for LEOs...and the public. Hours are limited for the public but workable. We have probably 30 pistol bays and 10 100yd bays. All indoors, well lit, and a well run cold range.

12 Ammo? Finding 5.7 x28, still only let you buy two boxes, but no 22. Got some 9mm FMJ at a Wal Mart cheap, still only let you buy two. I think the worst is over. I just got confirmation that my 20 cases of 7 1 /2 12 ga came in.

18 Delaware is in a total ammo drought.  You can still get shotgun shells occasionally, and obscure ammo like .41 Magnum (does anyone one one of those?) or .270 (which you can't use in Delaware for hunting b/c they don't allow rifles).  Any ammo purchases I make are either online or when I'm in a more gun friendly state like Virginia.

20 What is shown is a "red nine" c96, identified on the grips for 9mm luger. Small contracts were issued in WWI and large usage was seen through personal purchase. Please be careful as these beauties can be reassembled in a dangerous way. If you have a nice red nine like the one shown, stick with non hot ammo, say, winchester white box.

Missouri actually runs several gun ranges around that renders my need to join a gun club pretty moot.

Which is good, because I hardly have the time (or money) to go shooting these days.

The ranges themselves are fairly nice, if simple.  There's pistol/rifle and trap shooting (Skeet at one location that's a bit far out for me.)

About 4 times a year they'll run sporting clays.

There's also a patterning area and a few bow targets.

And the cost is only $3/hour (or round for the shotgun range.)

28 >> There are several indoor ranges one can go to but if you are going for distance (200 yards or greater) there are not too many places of which I know. That's the same issue I've had. I've been shooting handguns a decent bit, but I didn't have anywhere to shoot a rifle at all. And I like shooting rifles, goddammit. The club I'm in here has a 250 yd. rifle range that they use on a schedule, since it's an overlay on the 100 yd. and trap ranges which have to be shut down while there's firing from 250. Good enough. There are some steel targets on the 100 yd. range that I was ringing with the M1A yesterday. Looking forward to trying them out from 250.

29 I'm a fairly new shooter and so far have only shot at a local indoor range.  We're on a waiting list for one closer to our house.  We've also had two friends suggest coming up to shoot at their mountain cabin but haven't taken them up on it yet.  I have a feeling it's going to be really weird to shoot outside the structured confines of the one range I'm used to.

I've been able to get the 22LR and 9mm I need online at what I think are reasonable prices (~35cents for the 9mm and 7-8cents for the 22LR) but I have to monitor websites and strike when there's availability.  The 9mm availability seems to have improved more than the 22LR.

30 Just got back from Wally world. There were about 8 100 rd boxes of 9mm. 24.00 a box. They also had 3 AR type rifles in stock. Seems to be getting slightly better. Still no .22 tho.

31 Been waiting on a shipment of 22lr from Cabela's since freaking December. Walmart hasn't had 22 or 40 in stock since I can't remember when. Jakeson and I go out into the forest service up north in Arizona, but right now there's a ban on shooting because...fire danger. So, we're low on ammo, other than a couple of Mosin spamcans, but we can't shoot anyway. We *used* to go 22 and shotgun plinking in a perfectly legal area of the forest service about 5 minutes' walk from our cabin, but some Richie Riches in a hoity-toity enclave about a mile away called the cops on us. The guy was nice about it, but asked us to stop even though we were perfectly legal. So, now we hike about 20 minutes further...good exercise carrying all that gear, or that's what we tell ourselves, anyway.

32 G'mornin Andy. Even though I'm Texas, I have to go to the range to shoot. Too citified around here for plinking. When I'm forced to go to visit my wifes side, I'll generally take something and have a little fun. Even though her dad's a ron pee fan he's still got a pretty good selection he's willing (on sufferance) to let me mess with.

Posted by: Joethefatman™ (@joethefatman1) at June 09, 2013 06:40 AM (MnSla)

33 Around here most of the local shops have a decent, albeit overpriced stock of everything but 22s. Wal Mart is catch as catch can but they are the only place that has NOT raised prices. Rural King, a chain of farm stores, is selling Winchester 5.56 for 14.99 a box. They have cases and cases on the shelf, and at that price they can keep it.

Lincoln Ne area.  Some powder and bullets for reloading showing up on shelves.  Cast and plated bullets showed up on the shelves a couple weeks ago.  Still limited and you have to check each week.  Primers are the key.  Whey they are fully stocked, then this period is coming back to normal (whatever that is).

Hard to find bullets for .223 and .308 in normal sizes.  Varmint and very heavy bullets are on the shelves but the sizes in normal use for target or competition is limited.  55 to 69 grain in .224 bullets and 125 to 180 grain in .308 are hit and miss on the shelves.  9mm, .40 and .45acp is still limited, with people waiting at the store when shipments arrive.

No one has .300 AAC Blackout on the shelves.  Luckily I stocked up on some brass last year and have the tools to reform .223 to 300BLK.  Still need the .308 bullets to reload though.

Member of club in eastern Nebraska, and shoot at the public shooting park owned by the City of Grand Island, NE, plus some plinking at a friends acreage.  Compete in action pistol and multi-gun matches twice a month, plus weekly pistol league at local indoor range.

Bought a .30-06 just because there is plenty of that ammo on the shelves.  Ruger American with a Pentax scope makes a combo under $500 that will group .75 at 100 yds.  Reloading .308 WIN, .223, .45ACP.

I have molds to cast bullets for every caliber I own.  .45-70, .45LC, .45ACP, .38spl, 9mm, .308 in several weights and .223.

I was at cabellas about 6 weeks ago, and it looked like ammo was still fairly short.

I shoot sabot slugs and 12 gauge shells, so mostly I've been "insulated" (as insulated as a Sabot round normally costing $3 can get you.) but shortages haven't been that bad yet.

38 You can find 22LR on gunbroker auctions for 10-13c per round right now as people are unloading their hoards now.  While that isn't down to the 'normal' retail of 4-6c it is still better than the asinine 25-30c per round on some retail sites.

We shoot at the local ranges, and hunt on public lands here. One outdoor range has skeet, trap, a rifle range and a pistol range. The indoor ranges just have pistol and smaller caliber rifle lanes; no shotguns.

The outdoor range is ALWAYS busy but I think that is primarily because they have a well stocked consignment shop and a healthy gunsmith business.

Ammo is scarce, depending on what you want. Plenty of clay/dove loads for shotguns, not so much steel 00 or slugs. Most S & W .40 is just wadcutters for target practice and they only let you buy two at a time at the indoor range. .40 hollowpoints are pretty hard to come by. I haven't seen .22 of any species in a long time and I dont usually look for anything else. Yet.

Here in the ATL area,  sourcing ammo and components is still difficult unless you're looking to feed a .45LC, .22-250, or a 12 gauge.  I have lucked into a reasonably-price brick or two at Wallyworld since the unpleasantness started though.   If I didn't cast and reload for pistol, I'd have been really sunk.

I live only a few miles from several indoor ranges, but I choose to drive 45 minutes to a  pretty basic  members-only outdoor range out towards Alabama.  I hate standing  still in a noisy, smoky indoor lane  punching paper and hoping not to be perforated by a hoodrat  that much.  That it also has a 250 yard rifle range is a bonus.

Posted by: Jaws at June 09, 2013 06:48 AM (4I3Uo)

45 As for buying ammo, I've really stopped trying to find anything but .22. That's about all i can afford right now with these prices. Hell I entered a drawing for a 10/22 just for the 500 rounds that come with it, plus gun.

Posted by: Joethefatman™ (@joethefatman1) at June 09, 2013 06:48 AM (MnSla)

46 We have a range, Cedar Creek Rifle Range, provided by the US Forest Service. It's about a mile and a half down a gravel road, is unsupervised and has several covered benches set up. The maximum range is only 100 yards, but it's still nice to have a place to shoot.

My local gun shop has always had a decent supply of ammo. That was because they instituted a rationing system right away...(5) boxes per caliber per day and 200 rd limit on .22 LR. Back when I could afford it, I went every day for a week. They still have occasional sales on case lots of ammo, usually 7.62x39.

53  I shoot on a friends land.  About 150 yards is longest distance we shoot.
Everyone should reload if you shoot a lot. I have been reloading for 8-9 years, and with supply on hand, I can load any centre fire cartridge for less than .10 a round if I use home made cast lead bullets. That is almost .22 LR cost.
I try to go to range and shoot carry gun at least every other week and about 50 to 75 rounds each time, plus and other firearms.

57 Looking at places like Wal-Mart is futile. I've found .45ACP at one I shop at regularly just once in the last six months. Shotgun and certain rifle calibers (like .270 or 7mm Rem Mag) are usually in stock though. Here in San Antonio there are three places - all gun shops - that have ammo regularly: Durys, The Powderhorn, and Patten Guns. Pattens is a new, small shop, only been in operation since last November. Gun shows here locally always have ammo but depending on what you're looking for, the price may be outrageous. I bought a brick of 500 .22lr ammo at Pattens a few weeks ago for $20. Went to the gun show a few ways later and every vendor that had it - Same brand, weight, etc - was selling for $75-$80. Pistol calibers are coming back in stock online as well for some places, but it sells out relatively fast. Same for reloading components. Pattens is the only place locally that has had primers, powder and other components consistently for almost normal prices, although t this past months gun show, one vendor was selling reloading components and I was able to get a box of 1000 primers for $39. Winchester primers (I prefer CCI) but still, not bad. Another gun store, Nagels, had plenty of ammo in stock and was selling primers by the box (1000) for normal prices, though there was a limit on ammo amounts you could buy. The supply here has normalized, though its still spotty. Stay away from the box stores. Everyone shops at them. The casual shooter or gun owner buys their stuff from those places. The more 'dedicated' shooter or enthusiast will frequent their local specialty stores where supplies are much better.

58 Something Ive noticed ... .40 is available in quantity here, but 9mm and 45acp much much more scarce.

For rifles: 30.06, .243, 7mm all seem stocked. And .223 is available in quantity at local stores.

67 Used to shoot at an indoor range along with shooting at a buddies pond in the country, with so many people at the range these days I no longer go there. No other people ND to my face so just go to the pond when we can get together on a weekend. My Wal-Mart is getting in a steady stream of ammo, you just have to be there early to get the most desirable (22).

68 Shotgun shells are easy to find and clays are dirt cheap. Handgun ammo is still tight in local retail, but a few online stores have limited stock. I prefer buying bulk and don't mind paying shipping since I live rural. Driving 30 miles to buy 100 rounds is stupid. I buy 2000 round minimum orders online. I shoot on my own property. Because it's convenient means I probably shoot more often than most (2x per week). I can also tailor different shoots. The best part is whenever friends visit, I have the chance to introduce new people to shoot for the first time. In fact my son had some of college buddies over - 10 of them had never shot any gun - and every one of them tried. A few we're a bit taken aback but every one of them said they learned a lot and would do it again.

69 Haven't been actively looking, but when I've been in the sporting goods stores/sections it seems they're pretty well up on everything but .22.  Haven't been to any dedicated gun shops in a while.  Sis' fiance says they're also still spotty on 5.56 in Columbus (either overpriced or low stock) and certain loading supplies (I think he said primers and some calibers of pre-cast bullets).

Fort Worth, Texas:

20 ga shot for clays and dove $67/250 shells

12 ga shot for clays and dove $78/250 shells

Box of clays is $25/135 clays

.40 wadcutters $35/50 rounds; hollow points are $52/50 rounds; 2 box max at one time. I did see the outdoor range had .40 wadcutters and no max purchase a few weeks ago but they were snapped up pretty quickly.

So I would like to hear what the horde's thoughts are regarding a resonable supply in the casa. For me, a few hundred shot gun shells (500< ) of each flavor and a couple of hundred hollow point  .40 is the minimum.

PS NSA fucks: everyone in my house is proficient with these wepons, and we can discuss the daisho when you visit.

72 As far as shooting, I go to an indoor place here called 'The Bullet Hole'. There is another outdoor range called 'A Place to Shoot' but I haven't been there in years. Me of the local gun shops opened up a indoor range a few years ago, but you have to be a member and their one of those who decided that instead of trying to make things easier for the firearms enthusiast during the recent unpleasantness, to gouge the hell out of us. I not go into their store ever again, the prices were that bad. There are also two gun clubs that I know of, but end is geared more towards shot gunners and the prices at the other one are to high for my blood. There is mother place nearby in Helotes, Tx but I don't know anything abut it. For all the training I have to do with the wife, we'll just end up going up to the father in laws house. He has a range in his land up in East Texas.

73 Range 14 (Public) at Fort Dix.  $60 a year.  225yard rifle range with about 20 stations.  25yard pistol range with about 10 stations.  Managed by range bosses.  A shop with targets, etc, no ammo.  Crowded on weekends.  Fun place to shoot with the military ranges nearby cranking out M2s.  The also have shotgun and archery ranges.  On the web.

ShoreShot pistol range in Lakewood, NJ.  25yards with  10 stations.  Around $225 a year, or $20 an hour.  Guns, ammo, rentals, storage, etc.  Crowded all the time now.  Pistols up to .50, rifles up to .223 (if you are a member).  A guy suicide'd there a few weeks ago...not the first.  On the web and Facebook page.

I don't think there's a real shortage, but a hell of a lot of speculation. I'd love to see the speculators lose their shirt. Local indoor range is still practical. 77 CrotchetyOldJarhead: 1000 rounds per weapon on hand at all times is a good general rule. We keep a smaller amount of high end handgun ammo on hand in magazines ready for use if needed. But the day to day ammo stock is rotated through with our regular range practice.

78 To put the DHS request for 1.1 billion rounds of 9mm hollow point ammo into perspective:

That would represent approximately 20% of Germany's small arms ammo production (all calibers) in 1944 - its peak production year during World War II

And the DHS needs 20% of the NAZI's peak production for target practice? Of course  in defense of the DHS - they didn't actually say what they intended the targets to be.

92 What is it with Lawyers and all the Guns?

Lawyers are deeply familiar with the police force and not exactly enamored with the prospect of rousing one from the local donut shop should the lawyers life or family be in danger. Plus they also understand quite well the "better to be judged by twelve than carried by six" rule, and the "he's dead I'm not" rule.

Lawyers and guns are a good example of the truth that if you wish to know someone's true beliefs you don't listen to their words, you watch their actions.

Yeah, places to shoot. A lot of indoor ranges won't let you shoot rifles, not even .22. We have one local indoor range that allows "any gun, any caliber," $20/hr. The local rifle club here, with outdoor range, has limited membership, and only inducts new members once a year. But I see new outdoor ranges and clubs opening within a 50 mile radius, responding to the opportunity created by The Best Firearm Salesman In History, BHO.

I still laugh my ass off about this one incident that happened in the mid 80's. A friend had just gotten a FN-FAL, the real one made in Belgium. We went to an outdoor range, and there were all kinds of guns there. AR15's. AKs, H&Ks, etc. You name it, it was there. It was the mid 80's and there had been no import bans yet, so everybody had cool shit.

Anyway, this family was there, father and a few young kids, and a very lame looking .22 rifle. The father has a slight concerned look on his face, because my friend is on one side with his FAL, the $1000 scope, the bi-pod, etc, and on the other side of him were other big caliber black rifles.  My friend, always the comedian,  sees he is a tad concerned, and decides to put his hearing protectors on sideways, so instead of on his ears they were on his forehead and the back of his head. He looks at the father, puts on his best IQ of 20 inbred face and in a deep gutteral voice he says "hunt....humans".

I still laugh my ass off at that.

Peaches, if you and Fluffy need to do 'social work' it's likely gonna happen at less than 15 yards. At that range just about any caliber in a well placed group at center mass is gonna do the trick. The guy at the gun store is just trying to upsell you.

Now if you're gonna engage our friends with the alphabet security agencies or the Zetas, you might need a different load. And different apparel. And different tactics.

111 I would love to find me a Mauser Broomhandle, 1898 or prior. Under Canada's byzantine gun laws, it is classified as an "antique firearm" and no license or registration is required.

To qualify as an antique, a firearm has to have been made before 1898, and also NOT use commonly-available modern ammo. So the Red 9 model would be out, even if had been made that early.

Cap and ball revolvers also mostly qualify, and maybe some models that use obscure cartridges. But a revolver, even adequately old, that used .45 Long Colt, or even .22, would not.

117 Way down in South Texas the land is plentiful but the ammo is not. We have one indoor range in the city limits - cramped, smoky and loud. The better choice is an outdoor range and gun shop out on the border. $15/day to shoot, or $150/year for a membership and then come and go as you please. Five ranges set up - pistol range (any caliber, no rifles), 22 handgun range, 22 rifle range, long rifle range and a shotgun range. The shop will rent you anything up to and including a .50 BMG to shoot. Ammo is available, but they will only sell you what you plan to shoot that day, so no stocking up. Overall a pretty good deal. Ammo in the other stores is hit or miss. I haven't looked at Wally World in a month but when I was looking you had to be there the morning of a shipment to get any if the popular calibers. 22LR is still nonexistent on the shelves.

121 I just hit the Las Vegas Crossroads gun show yesterday and they had ammo in most common calibers.  Grabbed a few boxes each of .44 Special LSWC and JHP, 40 S&W, and 7.62 Tokarev.  Could have bought more than I did but I remember how pissed off I felt when some asswipe at the Ventura show got in first thing in the morning and cleaned them out of Tok.

Oddly, the Tokarev ammo is the hardest to find, but the shows usually have Winchester white box, Prvi Partisan and Wolf.  Mostly FMJ but Wolk also offers JHP and Sportsman's Guide offers a gizmo for hollow-pointing Tok rounds.

Right now I'm shooting at Firing Line, a local indoor range chain in Los Angeles.  $10 to shoot, pretty good selection of house range range reloads and decent staff.  There's an outdoor range up in Saugus I've got an invite to but since we're buying a house in TX I didn't want to sign up for a membership there.  The town we're moving to has a decent outdoor range and we'll have enough land for at a least a 50-100 yard range on our property.

I think I understand the lawyer/guns thing. I knew an old guy who was supplementing his retirement income by selling off his huge military rifle collection a piece at a time and only to people he knew and liked. Some smart doctors of my acquaintance did the same. It was a running joke at gun shows in the late 80's to see some well dressed guy buying or selling a $2500 H&K or something like that. One joke was if you walked up to him and said, "Hi, Doc!" you had an 80% chance of being right.

124 I'm forced to shoot on private land that isn't well patrolled. Apparently lots of others shoot there too. Local ammo supply is still as bad as four years ago. Of course I live in a shitty blue state, irrespective of our Republican Governor and legislature. And the Democrats here love their guns as much as much as Republicans do. But they love Barry even more. There are some state ranges but many lack pistol stations. Max range for state ranges anywhere, as far as I know, is 225 yards. And semi-autos, while not outright banned, have a three round magazine limit. $100 fine for each additional round. Fuck that -- I'll shoot on the big landholding company's land along with the Democrats. A couple of years ago the State tried to open a new range within 10 miles of my house, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. People living a mile or two away from the proposed site banned together, however, and got it nixed. I'm not going to drive miles to shoot when there's thousands of acres of uninhabited woodlands within eye's view of my house. I do have a new acquaintance with access to a farm and I'm gonna ask him permission to shoot there. Problem is that he'll probably have to be there if I get permission to shoot there, making it logistically difficult. Plus, it's all a fantasy anyways because I'm too broke to afford much ammo. Right now it will take a near miracle for me to be able to shoot or fish for the foreseeable future. You can believe the old saying "you'll never realize how much you miss something until you can't do it anymore." So for you lucky morons who can, shoot a bunch for me. At least you can still send the Feds the message that we're not going to cave into their bullshit plans to disarm us.

125 I used to go up to Northern MN to shoot.  In Laws cabin.  There were neighbors up there but as long as we went to the woods across the gravel road, it was all good.  I miss that place.

126 I buy 38 special at the indoor range where I shoot my carbine, and put a few "for the road" in my pocket during each session instead of just shooting off the whole box (my property, my pocket). So between trips Upstate, keeps a modicum of 38s on hand, as needed. Feels like the frigging Warsaw Ghetto though.

127 I have a broomhandle. Very interesting and comfortable gun.

128 When I first got my gun a few years back starting shooting on one of the local gun stores, but they had very limited hours. A local gun club opened up membership so I joined them. They have a 24-hour indoor range as well as more limited hours outdoor ranges. They have now stopped new memberships for a while. I think we hit 3000 members which is a lot for 4 ranges. Only chance for plinking is when I visit the in-laws they live in a rural area with plenty of area to shoot, and a brother in law with lots of guns to do the shooting with.

130 I don't often go to Wal Mart, but was there last night in east Fort Worth for other stuff... walked back and checked...  they were sold out of everything but 3oo win mag and shotgun shells.  Wow.

132 Standard pressure .38SPL is still hard to find at reasonable prices. You can find all the personal defense +P stuff you want at a dollar a round. I had to resort to Aguila this week, which I swear is underloaded, even for standard pressure cartridges.

133 Adding another chambering to the collection is a tough call right now. Word. I want a 7.62X25 pistol, but I don't think I have room for a hoard in another caliber.

134 Shooters World in Tampa, FL. Great selection of guns to buy. 27 pistol lanes @ 25 yards, steel target course, 7 rifle lanes @ 100 yards. Plenty of ammo...if you're using the range. 115 grain federal 9mm FMJ is about $18 for a box of 50.

135 I'd like to reload. It would give me an excuse to clean the garage and buy some additional 'shop equipment.

I know that gun (pictured).

It's the one Han Solo used to shoot Greedo in the Cantina.  (just add a scope and a flash suppressor)

And, yes, Han did shoot first.

I just recently renewed my membership at Field Time in Stanton, CA.  The only way to get one now is for you to be next on the waiting list when someone relinquishes his/her membership due to relocation, death, etc.  It's easily the best indoor range I've ever used.

142 Ammo is around but it's dear.  Two years ago, a box of 50 9mm rounds was under $20, and that was at the range where they charged a convenience premium.  Lucky Gunner is selling that shit for almost $40/box.

Is it easier to find than it was in January?  Yeah.  But I can't figure out how something that has become more plentiful has also gotten more expensive.

143 Wife went on a garden tour...so

I went up to the gun store.  No .22, 9mm, or .380.  I bought a couple of boxes of .45.  Then I bought a Hi-Point 995TS cuz I've been wanting a 9mm carbine.  I'll let you know how it shoots.

Oh, and a 2 week wait for NICS.

Posted by: trainer says Hi, NSA at June 09, 2013 10:26 AM (eVgJn)

144 I have a .22 pistol on layaway and they actually had two boxes of .22 LR when I went in to make a payment. So I bought those. I'm not seeing any 9mm anywhere but I haven't really been going out of my way to find it either. It's too heartbreaking to be told "no" all the time. There does seem to be more ammo in the case at Walmart and at the sporting goods store but it's not for handguns. I haven't called the shooting range to ask what they've got on hand. The last 9mm I bought was from them and it was a 25 count box of law enforcement type and cost a fortune. I haven't shot any of it. My hording-foo is pathetic. 25 rounds of 9mm and 100 of .22LR. I'm in Albuquerque.

Actually it is possible. you can find instructions on YouTube. It is how the round was devised in the first place.

146 I tell you what is odd. 30--30 is hard to find.

Posted by: pat at June 09, 2013 10:32 AM (LLHgu)

147 "Is it easier to find than it was in January? Yeah. But I can't figure out how something that has become more plentiful has also gotten more expensive." Simple. It's more plentiful because the people selling it jacked the prices enough that people who have a stash already won't buy it all up. Stores that sell can control demand by limiting buyers to two boxes (and it's still all gone 10 minutes after the truck comes in) or they can push prices up until demand and supply even out which means a box or three will stay sitting on the shelf.

New or used, and how much? My Cabela's has three used ones for $1399, which sounds steep. But you've gotta love the five dollar magazines.

A guy pulls into a gas station that is charging $3.99 a gallon and gripes at the owner, "How come you are charging so much for gasoline?  The guy across the street is only charging $2.99."

The owner asked in reply, "Why don't you fill up over there?"

The guy says, "Because he's out of gas."

The owner replied, "Yeah, I usually charge $2.99 when I'm out of gas too."

152 Peaches, I'm with Taro. FMJ for practice but you need the hollow points for self defense. I keep my magazines loaded with hollow points unless I'm at target practice, then I'll switch them to FMJ. I put the hollow points back in as soon as I'm done with practice.

Peaches has a wheelgun, but one thing we should add for autoloaders is to practice with enough hollowpoints to establish that the pistol feeds them reliably.

Back in the days before all of my weapons were "stolen" (really need to fill out that police report, one of these days), my dad and I used to go to the WMA near his place. Nice range with a tunnel at each firing position, and ability to set targets out to 300 Meters or so, with a 30 ft. high berm for a backstop.

Since he's passed on, not so much. That, and no ammo to spare...

159 I've been stocking up on powder and primes for the last 4 yrs, buying couple times a year if i need it or not. I cast my own bullets from tire weights I collect from tire stores.(i have a hundred pounds in ingots, lol). For every box I shoot at the range I collect 2 boxes in brass. So I'm good.
