The Left's Emotional Anti-Gun Appeals Explained

James Taranto's column had a fascinating revelation about the left's anti-gun strategy this week.

Paul Bedard of the Washington Examiner has uncovered a fascinating document: an 80-page "talking points" monograph titled "Preventing Gun Violence Through Effective Messaging," written by a trio of Democratic political operatives.
The document, as Bedard writes, instructs politicians and advocates "to hype high-profile gun incidents like the Florida slaying of Trayvon Martin to win support for new gun control laws." Essentially it's a how-to book on inciting a moral panic.

Taranto summed it up thusly:

The booklet explicitly urges foes of the Second Amendment to abjure rationality in favor of the argumentum ad passiones, or appeal to emotion. "When talking to broader audiences, we want to meet them where they are," the authors advise. "That means emphasizing emotion over policy prescriptions, keeping our facts and our case simple and direct, and avoiding arguments that leave people thinking they don't know enough about the topic to weigh in."

And they aren't even obvious about it or anything. Now pass me another high magazine clip.

Even in gun-friendly states, getting a concealed carry permit has frequently been a hit-or-miss proposition subject to the whims of local law enforcement officials. We never should have gone as far down the road of allowing prior restraint of a fundamental right like this, and it's good to see it being dialed back all over the country.

7 Took my little man to waly world yesterday to get a new soccer ball. Ended up with 3 bonus boxes of ammo. They were not set out early like normal, yay me. Now I just need to find some time to shoot. I have also been giving it some thought and I think that the people of the gun should start thinking long and hard about how much gun rights really mean to you personally. Amnesty is the end of the gop. It means they have completely sold out the middle class and conservatives which means democrat control nationally for a generation. Liberal scotus will have zero qualms about reversing any and all decisions allowing civilian gun ownership. What will you be willing to do?

20 Hey 'rons and 'ronettes, I blegged about pump shotguns a few days ago ( or maybe it was an especially difficult to remove sock). Anywayzzzz, it was a choice between Rem 870 and Ithaca 37. I checked both out and bought the M37 w/ 20" bbl and 7 shot magazine. She's a beaut. The parkerized finish is beautifully applied and the action is slicker'n frog snot on ice. The whole piece was constructed with a high degree of precision. I got the wood stock and it's like meeting up with an old Marine Corps (pronounced "CORE" for any historic presidents in the audience) buddy.

Cost WAY too much but, dammit, I'm worth it.

21 Last year's Watkins race had a great ending, Ambrose and Keselowski bumping and banging the whole last lap. I also think the Nascar fanbase is starting to like road courses more than in the past. It's some nice variety from the normal oval course. Also Tony Stewart's injury probably helps sell tickets by reminding fans of the inherent danger of racing. Few like to admit it, but a large part of the excitement of racing for fans is the risking life and limb aspect.

BTW, I subscribe to the "lead tsunami" theory of home defense. I totally get the arguments for handguns but big holes...etc.

47 Probably a winged sprint car (Sprint Cup is top division of Nascar's stock car racing, sprint cars are a type of dirt track racecar.) Two types of sprint cars: winged and non-winged. Winged have a giant ... wing ... on top. Looks like a giant square as big as the car on top of it. Provides down force, keeps the car on the track and lets you go faster without losing control. Not sure why, but the winged are also safer than the non-winged. Almost a half dozen people have died in sprint car races this year alone. Seems a couple die every year. Worse safety equipment. Wrecks happen on rural dirt tracks far from hospitals. Often more amateur level hobby racers. Big issue is its an open cockpit, so things can more easily penetrate and strike the head and neck of the driver. Tony Stewart broke his leg this week in winged spring car event in rural Iowa. He races on Sunday for millions on TV, but during the week he goes and races in front of 300 farmers on random dirt tracks. Which is why he gets a lot of fans, but also increases his chances of a serious injury. I'm not an expert on sprint cars, somebody else could explain better.

One of them races at the tiny quarter-mile track here in Winston, where I've seen stock car races, but that's about it. Too frigging loud for me, but people of all walks of life have a great time there.

56 The giant wing also provides another function other than downforce -- advertising. One reason why there's more money in winged sprint cars than non-winged. World of Outlaws is winged. I like the racing of sprint cars but on TV the small surfaces plus the dirt means a TV viewer can't see who the sponsor is. Which means sponsors aren't so interested in sponsoring and TV isn't so interested in televising. A nice large surface area to place a sponsor's ad is very helpful in a sport dependent on sponsors.

That and them knowing that it cost NOTHING for them to pass the law and there is no punishment since they come from a safe blue district. But it costs the person challenging the law (or org) $3M on average to take it through the appeal process to the supremes.

And even if by some chance the supremes rule that the State or Feds must pat partial or all court costs they know that not only will the tax payers be the only ones punished, but it will take years, and possible more litigation, to get that payment.

94 Well re: suppressors and poaching, the wide adoption of archery for hunting is part and parcel to that. I hate poachers and they are a real problem, but obviously poachers still poach and they suck ass.

I've had hunting discussions before with guys that would take all they could if they thought they could get away with it. Maddening.

And suppressors effect on murder would be obviously nill. If you are willing to murder, you're not going to give a shit abut a class III or not... just like you're not going to give a shit about using a legal weapon or not.

95 I don't know about where you guys live but down here in Dixie (or at least GA and SC) game violators are literally raped if caught by DNR. So not many game violators.

I knew of a case in GA years ago where a guy was caught seining a creek. They took his net, they took his boat, they took the boat trailer, they took the truck pulling the boat trailer. And then they got around to a huge money fine.

My attorney told me which one I should comply with since it is the more serious of the two. When our lawmakers were told of the conflict, they shrugged their shoulders and said "that's up to you to deal with hit".

120 Finally picked up my Marlin 1894 cb, which I had to modify (neuter) to 5 round magazine per insane NYC local laws. Very, very nice though. The guy I went through (MacGregor's Gun Shop at Lake Luzerne) was a prince, and did a great job, even had some 38 spec ammo for starters. Put in my order for a new magazine tube at the same time for if/when I get a place Upstate (my country of origin). But the process is really disheartening (disturbing, from a freedom perspective). First the $ and endless wait for "long gun permit" complete with background checks, fingerprints, mug shot, etc. to really make you feel like a registered sex offender. Then the shopping for a gunsmith to make 19th century technology "NYC compliant." And now the arcane paperwork to "register" my gun with duplicate and triplicate carbons, statements from the dealer that the gun "holds no more than 5 rounds" and scrounging for any available ammo..... But... have at least succeeded in obtaining a beautiful, functioning firearm (that I can also use at our local indoor range). Am really looking forward though to getting some good 357 and letting the puppy out for a run on an outdoor range Upstate.
