— andy I Hear It Was Gun Appreciation Day
... or something.
Gun Appreciation Day, a grassroots movement started in response to President Obama and Washington Democrats' recent rhetoric on gun control, drew big crowds to state capitols nationwide that consisted of strong supporters of the Second Amendment. The show of strength by gun supporters couldn't go unnoticed.Thousands showed up in New York, where Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a new strict gun control measure designed to make "assault weapons" illegal and limit magazine sizes. In areas of the country where open-carry is allowed, supporters proudly - and responsibly - exercised their Second Amendment rights.
Gun appreciation day is called that "days that end in 'y'" in my house.
Eyes On The Prize
Speaking of New York, John E. spotted this over at Weasel Zippers:
Here it is. This is the video where I [ed. -- Republican NY State Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin] was asked to keep the Democrat proposals for the NY SAFE Act away from the public. This list was given to me by a colleague and it is not confidential. This bill was an attack on the 2nd amendment and the Democrats clearly wanted to dismantle the work of the Founding Fathers. None of these amendments were included in the final bill thanks to us fighting back. I will not stand silent while these unpatriotic proposals are pathetically thrown at us a 11 oÂ’clock at night:
1. Confiscation of “assault weapons”
2. Confiscation of ten round clips
3. Statewide database for ALL Guns
4. Continue to allow pistol permit holderÂ’s information to be replaced to the public
5. Label semiautomatic shotguns with more than 5 rounds or pistol grips as “assault weapons”...
Keep in mind how paranoid we "gun nuts" are about the Democrats' true goal being complete confiscation as you click over and read the whole list.
Buying Guide -- Updated
Lots of the discussions in these threads involve recommendations for the best rifle, shotgun, etc. And the gun-totin' types around here are always willing to oblige.
Yet the recommendations are made in a vacuum. We were having an email discussion this week among the cobs, and a couple of facts caught my eye. John E. ordered some magazines from a large U.S. gun manufacturer and only received half his order, and Russ reported that he saw earliest-delivery dates of October 2013 for a case of .22 ammo when shopping on the Internet.
Given that the gun manufacturers were already running flat-out before the election, I'm updating my official gun recommendation to "YES" in response to whether someone should buy a particular gun. If you can get your hands on it, buy it.
Let us know what you're seeing in your part of the country on availability of guns & ammo.

The Tip Line Runneth Over
'Flounder' damned near melted the thread tip line this week with the excellent collection of links that I'll work into the thread. This one triggered a memory of my gun-rich upbringing: Elmer Keith: 1899-1984
In 1911, Elmer was burned terribly in a hotel fire in Missoula, Montana, and carried scars for the rest of his life. An ordinary man would have died from the fire. His entire body was covered with burns and his chin was "welded" to his right shoulder with his left hand turned upside down on the back of his left wrist.Elmer recounted this: "When we moved from Missoula back to Helena I was considerable of a wreck. My left hand was just turned upside down and back on my wrist, just a claw extended from the top of my wrist. I used to wrap a towel around it when Father sent me to school so the girls wouldnÂ’t cringe at the sight of it. The right side of my face was all drawn down towards my shoulder, also. I was a horrible looking sight.
I told Father I had to have a left hand so I could hold a rifle and do normal things. Father contacted every doctor in Helena to try to get them to operate on the hand and break it over and straighten it out. None of them would tackle the job. They all said I would never live to be 21 anyway and they were not going to torture me any further.
Finally, I had had enough of going with only one hand, so I asked Dad if he would break it. Mother said, "Can you stand it?" I said, "I donÂ’t know, but you can go ahead and do it anyway."
So mother got a bunch of cotton bats and gauze, soaked them in melted deer tallow, and had a lot of bandages ready. Father went down to GoodkindÂ’s wholesale liquor store and bought a gallon of Old Granddad, 100 proof, and came home with it.
He said, "Son, do you still want to go through with it?" I said, "I do." I said "Regardless of how much I howl or pass our or whatever, get the job done. I want this hand straight whether IÂ’ll ever be able to use it or not."
That's a man right there. His great book, Sixguns, is required reading.
Gun Of The Week - Answer
That's the Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum, made famous by Clint Eastwood and owing its existence to Elmer Keith. I'll also take "generic S&W N-frame revolver" for the correct answer, as they make several different models in .357 Mag., .41 Mag., etc. Go ahead and buy one, punk. Make my day.

Someone tell me again why there is a fear of putting guns in the hands of your average law abiding citizen.
Was it because they were not trained professionals, skilled in the art of not resorting to a weapon in a bar, when drunk?
Yeh....Baltimore City PD has some PR issues to deal with.

The tweep who brought this to my attention with a snide "why should this guy get to own a gun?" is a restaurant owner; using his logic, if anyone has ever cut or burned themselves in his kitchens, he should be clearly banned from owning a restaurant.
But I just wanted to throw that out there.

There was a link at Instapundit this morning about 2nd amendment issues to Politico (ugh), quoting someone named "Bill Clinton", and the comments were, shall we say, priceless. The thrust of the article was the political price that some might pay (like getting un-elected) by supporting gun control measures.
There is such a tangible loathing and hate between factions in this country that I don't see how it ever gets patched up. And I think that this is what our President and his Party are counting on, to continue to manipulate and control us.

my goodness what a man Elmer Keith was...whew. I don't know if that sort of man is permitted anymore.
Nowadays we would make him a victim, give him disability, jail his father for abusing him, give him a pill for his hand through Obamacare, and take away all his guns, the very thing he became expert on and that probabaly saved him by giving him a vocation. That sort of man is not allowed and is rarely seen these days.

Colorado Alex, gun show last weekend here in Jackson. It was sharing convention center space with a bridal show. I resisted the urge to go look inside the bridal show to inquire if any of the gowns came with integral concealed holsters. OSP will attest to how I resisted that idea.
Why would you resist such a sensible idea?
And I initially though that we needed more Gun and Bridal shows, since it combines two popular events as well as provides convenience for Middle Americans. Find a wedding dress, get a few ideas for the reception, register for the gifts. All in one easy venue.

President Obama is tripling the number of Cabinet agencies with gun control law enforcement responsibilities in his new bid to track guns, adding six agencies to the three typically included–Justice, Homeland Security and Defense.
Section 1.e of his executive order released Wednesday adds State, Treasury, Interior, Agriculture, Energy, and Veterans Affairs. It reads: “For purposes of this memorandum, ‘Federal law enforcement agencies’ means the Departments of State, the Treasury, Defense, Justice, the Interior, Agriculture, Energy, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security, and such other agencies and offices that regularly recover firearms in the course of their criminal investigations as the President may designate.”

VALPARAISO | Fetla's Trading Post will close its Valparaiso store and relocate inventory to a Fetla's store in Knox, company President Ken Banks said.
Merchandise on the store's cavernous sales floor has been discounted 30 percent pending the move to Fetla's Trading Post II in Knox, Banks said.
Fetla's opened in 1915 on Ind. 2 in Valparaiso as a one-stop shopping trip for hardware, sporting goods, a haircut, a new dress or a quick lunch, according to a company Web site.
In its heyday, the 30,000-square-foot outlet stocked everything from dishes and dinette sets to ice skates, fishing rods and paddle boats.
The store's gun sales landed it and other local gun shops on a list of defendants sued by the city of Gary in 1999 as alleged sources of handguns used in crimes in that city.
The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004 but remained open for business until emerging a year later under a reorganization plan.
The Knox store has been open for some time, Banks said.
Banks did not provide a closing date for the Valparaiso store.

Here in Tampa FL area, Bill Jackson's over in Pinellas is pretty well loaded. Plenty of shotguns (of the tactical and not-so variety) are readily in stock as of Monday this week. Ammo is in good shape, except for .223/5.56- that stuff is just plain gone EVERYWHERE. 9mm is getting 'thinner' he says, but they have it. You can buy PMAGS, one per day per customer until they run out. The only mags they don't have are 10/22 25-rd; those went months ago.

They had a few tricked out 10/22s, but no other EBRs as far as I could see. Their pricing was predatory. An older, worn looking 1911 had a tag of $1295 on it. The cheapest semi-auto I saw (brand unknown) was $395 in 9mm. There were plenty of regular rifles and shotguns but they were priced sky high too.
The ammo shelves were fairly vacant but I did see a few 50 round boxes of unknown maker 7.62 x 51 -- I'm pretty sure they were asking for a fresh human kidney per box.
I've visited this place before and I thought their prices were high THEN; now, forget about it. But I saw them making sales, so it wasn't too steep for some people.

Scattershot (heh) items afore I rush out to shoot one of my Mosin-Nagants at a local action shootin' match:
* El Cajon (San Diego suburb) has a gun store (Hiram's) that used to be just one side of the liquor store, which is still attached but now separated by a wall.
* Vic - they made Model 66s until 2005? Thought that model went out of production much earlier (mine's a nice 1993).
* On that "Guns and Bridal" thing - someone help me out here, there actually is a southern-living oriented style mag with a title like "Guns and Gardens" or something. Nice walnut and blued steel and lots of fancy shotguns, I'm thinking, more than tacticool or plastic.
Well, off to the hills. I'm usually the only bolt-action guy at this match, so I at least provide entertainment to the rest. Some days my shooting is OK, sometimes not so much (of course I blame the 70s surplus Soviet ammo, not my lack of practice or discipline .....).

I'd like to hear everybody's thoughts on non-semiauto defensive rifles. If semi-auto rifles were banned two or three shootings from now, how would the gun companies work around the ban?
Ruger makes a 10 shot scout rifle. There are high capacity lever actions in .357 and 44 mag, if you can find them. I'd like to see a new production Enfield jungle carbine in .308. Not an Ishapore, but a nice new rifle that doesn't look like a fifty year old gun made in India.

Could a 3D printer be argued as a Press under the First Amendment?
That's a really good legal question. I'm not a lawyer, but I've posted many lawyer jokes here and elsewhere, so I'll give it a try.
AFAIK, anything you write is automatically copyrighted to you. The manufacture of a piece of hardware, if said piece is your original design, would be yours. However, if you're copying someone else's intellectual property (as embodied in a patent or a blueprint), you'd be guilty of infringement unless you paid a licensing fee or had a similar arrangement (i.e., legal permission) with the original creators.
OTOH, the proliferation of printers (I'm drawing a parallel to music and the possibility of accidental copying, see Harrison, George) would have to be taken into account also. Think Napster.
Conclusion: I have no idea, but if John Roberts could tax your creation, I'm sure it'd be all right.

Besides, there is a very strong chance some of you might use these weapons to commit political violence, and that cannot be tolerated. The United States of America must be tamed- it is a rogue nation and a far greater threat to the peace of the world than the poor oppressed North Koreans or the innocent Iranians. Barack Obama should use his multicultural wisdom to help make America a more humble citizen of the global village.

Baltimore cops are mostly dirt bags. We ran into a group in Myrtle Beach about ten years ago and they tried to steal our hookers. Talk about low.
They even followed us to our hotel and tried to start a fight. One of your friends knew the mayor and had the MB cops there in a flash. That is when we found out they were cops, they tried to get the MB cops to let them go.
How did that work out? Not too good, the boys spent the night in MB jail and the chef call Baltimore the next morning and told their chef about their behavior.
They left for MD when they left the jail.

It'll probably be a year at least before you'll find a military style semi-auto (you can't get an assault rifle, which are full auto, without jumping through a bunch of federal hoops).
Several companies make AR-10 variants. I hear decent things about PTR-91s (H&K 91 clone). If you can live without a pistol grip, Springfield Armory makes many variants of their M1A.
You've got lots of time to do research. ar-15.com is a good place to hang out and absorb knowledge.

It doesn't. They, the MSM, call any gun tricked out that looks like a military weapon an assault weapon. Like I am going into combat with at tricked out 10/22.
Fucking idiots.

AR-15s are not "assault rifles", because they lack full-auto capability. They are military-styled semi-autos, functionally identical to semi-automatic hunting rifles.

Remington used to make a pump rifle that accepted AR-15 mags. They'd probably bring it back.

and now according to NY Donks a 7 shot semi-auto tubular magazine fed shot gun, or any shotgun with a pistol grip, or.......
it is amazing that they think Elmer Fudd will accept any of this, and if he does I will work with the other lib idiots to outlaw hunting to screw fudd further.

Mossberg is making a bolt gun fed by AR mags.....
frankly I have performed greater marksmanship feats with a lever gun than a semi-auto unless I practice back to my old infantry skills.
They are, sincerely, nibbling for all guns over time.
They will not stop, and when they still have not fixed "evil" they will try to univent knives like England.

I own a 6-inch Smith and Wesson Model 25 "N-Frame" with both the .45 Long Colt and .45 ACP cylinders. I think I paid something like $350 for it in gently used condition back in the early 1990s. I guess it's worth close to $1000 in devalued Obama-bucks now.
I never got a Smith Model 29 because I always felt it was a little under-engineered for such a hot cartridge. My Ruger Super Blackhawk has significantly thicker cylinder walls than a Model 29.

The real difficulty for those of us that do a lot of reloading will be primers- still in very short supply, and demand is through the roof. Brass still difficult also, esp. in anything with standard military applications. The industry is expecting the Obamanation to go after components/ammunition manufacture through EPA regulation. If you can locate primers of the proper size for your personal reloading, BUY them.

See if you can find a used Beretta 86 (they don't make them anymore). It's a .380 automatic with a tip-up barrel. You insert the magazine, then tip up the barrel and insert a round into the chamber (so you don't have to rack the slide). It's double-action, so the first trigger pull might be tough depending upon how limited your strength is, but the subsequent shots would be single-action (i.e., much lighter). Alternatively, you could thumb back the hammer for the first shot, if you can.
But it would be better if you could find a nice .38 double-action revolver with a fairly light trigger pull. Smith and Wesson .38s were made in the millions and were the standard for law enforcement, so they're easy to find. You'll find them at every gun store and pawn shop. Just pull the trigger a few times and see if you can manage it.

Some would argue that a .22 rimfire is the best for teaching basic skills and cheap plinking so it should be the entry level long gun - but see above, the AR-15 is second best at everything all around. Ever the military find it an excellent entry level firearm (errr, weapon).
I from this point forward will recommend an AR-15 clone as the best entry level long gun for newbies. Too bad the industry hasn't pushed it as the ultimate entry level long gun - or simply one's best choice for one's first. Might have fought off the scary black gun shiite...

In early September, I ordered a Ruger .357. I was hoping to have it for my birthday in October. Uh, no chance. They were backordered for months and months having sold orders for well over a million firearms by then. By December, my patience ran out and I went back to the gun store where they had a beautiful S&W 686 plus, SS 6" barrel .357. I was quick to get my deposit back and buy the S&W from the case. Being that this is CA, I had to wait ten days (eleven really) to pick up. During the 10 day wait, the Sandy Hook murders happened. When I went back to the gun store it was HOLY FRIJOLES! They were in the process of being cleaned-out. Most of the long guns were off the rack and the pistol cases that were four shelves were down to one shelf full and three empty. It lookes like those pictures of supermarket shelves in Florida the day before a hurricane hits. They had all hands on deck doing purchase paperwork. The range lanes had waiting lists two deep on a sunny Saturday morning.
You should know that this is in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Mike Honda's district, the part that used to vote for Pete Stark with 65%. This is a place thick with leftists of all colors where people tell me "You're a conservative? I don't think that I ever met one" so yes, it's real, people are arming up, getting their guns while they can, even here in the bluest part of a deep blue state.

I'm with you on this, the AR is the Jack of All. You can easily shoot 300-400 rounds through one in a day and not feel as if you've been beating down. And damn, do they shoot well. Their must be at least 50 manufactures of them and for the most part they are all good with some being truely exceptional. It's no wonder everyone wants one.
