6 The IRS is many things, but “independent” isn’t one of them. It is formally part of the Treasury Department and is headed by the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, who is appointed by the President. The Commissioner is accountable to the President reporting through the Treasury Secretary.

Is this why Treasury Secretary "Turbo" Timmy wanted to leave town ?

54 Oh by the way.  I donned a hazmat suit and ventured over to Kos to see what the kiddies think about the IRS scandal.

Actual headline:

The IRS "Scandal" -- all smoke, no fire

And there's this gem:

These are agents doing their job. They responded to an unusual influx of groups with political language in their applications all going after a designation that excludes groups that carry out many political actions.

The only scandal here is that this is being reported as if the IRS did something wrong in injecting itself into politics. The law requires that the IRS inject itself into politics. Don't like it? Change the law. Don't attack the people trying to enforce it.

99 IRS officials refused to grant tax exempt status to two pro-life organizations because of their position on the abortion issue, according to a non-profit law firm, which said that one group was pressured not to protest a pro-choice organization that endorsed President Obama during the last election.

“In one case, the IRS withheld approval of an application for tax exempt status for Coalition for Life of Iowa. In a phone call to Coalition for Life of Iowa leaders on June 6, 2009, the IRS agent ‘Ms. Richards’ told the group to send a letter to the IRS with the entire board’s signatures stating that, under perjury of the law, they do not picket/protest or organize groups to picket or protest outside of Planned Parenthood,” the Thomas More Society announced today. “Once the IRS received this letter, their application would be approved.”

100 Gutfeld's got some skills. But that "The Conversation" format is atrocious. All the writers keep bumping the shit out of each other's posts with new, unrelated shit. Even worse, when one of you writes a reply, it's not threaded, so you have to scroll through umpteen pages or drill down by furiously clicking links like a chimp with electrodes jammed in the pleasure center of his brain. However, it has provided Ace with another source besides Hot Air - a column Ace wrote somewhere else. Sooner or later, he's going to link to a column he wrote at The Conversation that links to an earlier AoSHQ post, which in turn links back to Hot Air. And you know what that means: End of Days.

The IRS official in charge of tax exemptions for organizations said the improper methods employed within her division were executed by "low level workers" in Cincinnati who weren't motivated by "political bias,"

----

i was looking over that IRS article in the last thread. The statement above seems true-but-intended-to-deceive.

Of course the improper methods were executed only by low level workers. That's who does the work. It leaves open the point that the improper methods were ordered by high level managers.

Of couse the workers weren't motivated by bias. Once again it was the hi-level people who had the bias.

116 The only scandal here is that this is being reported as if the IRS
did something wrong in injecting itself into politics. The law requires
that the IRS inject itself into politics. Don't like it? Change the law.

Nick Fury is an antihero among superheros.

Okay, I'll bite.

Depends on the specific version of Nick Fury.  In general- no.  Being a sneaky bastard is not the same as being an anti-hero.  Your example of House works pretty well- because he's not saving people because he cares about saving people, or even the noble calling of his profession, but so they'll leave him alone, or to prove how awesome he is (and sometimes both).

The Punisher is an anti-hero.  He's not saving people and fighting crime to save people and fight crime, but to get pay-back.  If someone happens to get hurt along the way... well, that's unfortunate, but not really his problem.

Venom (when they're letting him be a protagonist) is an anti-hero.

But calling Nick Fury an anti-hero is rather like calling Batman an anti-hero.

So in other words, "Abdicate your first amendment rights to free speech and peaceable    assembly   and we've got a deal."

125 >Valerie Jarrett at Harvard on 22 Feb 2010 January 21, 2010 the Supremes decide in favor of Citizens United to the approval of conservatives and absolute freaking out by liberals. Two days later Obama goes on his weekly radio broadcast and says: >>"this ruling strikes at our democracy itself" and "I can't think of anything more devastating to the public interest" January 27, 2010 Obama berates the Supremes on national TV during his SOU speech saying: >> Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign corporations – to spend without limit in our elections. Well I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that's why I'm urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong. In February 2010 the IRS starts targeting conservative groups and only conservative groups applying for 501 status. It's all just one big coincidence.

Batman, Nick Fury = Hero

Always liked Jonah Hex as anti-hero (before that gawdawful movie version with Josh Streisand). I'm pretty sure that his "I'll do what I think is right, even if I have to kill every man, woman and child in this town to do it" philosophy qualifies as anti-hero.
