Hagel Cloture Vote Scheduled for 4:15
— Ace

@ChadPergram

Senate to vote on cloture for Hagel at 4:15 pm et. Needs 60 votes.

I don't know if this means Hagel has the votes -- or if Reid is just calling our bluff (and may un-call that bluff it if turns out there aren't enough votes for cloture).

All we do know at this time is that Jews control the State Department. Per our would-be future Secretary of Defense, of course.

Even calling to buck up the spirits of Senators who have already announced opposition would be a good thing. They talk to colleagues who might be on the fence.

The Democrats have enough votes, if they get cloture, to confirm Hagel.  And they will.  So any Republican who does not vote against cloture is tacitly voting for Hagel.

However, the rules of the Senate say they have to take two votes- cloture, and then one actually to confirm.  So you may (probably will) get at least a couple of Republicans who "Don't support Hagel" who vote for cloture, but then vote against him (since then it doesn't cost them anything) when the actual confirmation vote gets called.  That way, they can have their cake and eat it, too.  They can make sure that Hagel is confirmed, but "vote against him" to bolster their ratings with the various Conservative rating groups.

Which means those groups should be considering cloture votes as well as actual passage votes.

Since every Dem will vote for the nomination the only way the Republicans can defeat him is by filibuster. A vote to invoke cloture is therefore a vote FOR the nomination.

Technically you are correct.  In reality you are 100% wrong.  If a party has enough votes to get cloture, they have enough votes to pass whatever they want.

Which is why the Republicans should have changed the Filibuster rules back to their original state (that is: you actually have to run a filibuster) when they had the chance.
