they have become very easy to come by, used to be you had to have been shot at and shot back, now being in the area of an IED gets you one

I got mine one night I was laying in bed and some others from my platoon got shot and killed, I told 1stSgt I didn't want it, he told me to shut up, eventually I legit earned one, but whatever

42 Note: Gunnery Sgt. Ermey has no NMC Achievement medal or a higher award. Marines are the most parsimonious service for awards. If he was Army, add three more rows of ribbons, especially considering he was in South Vietnam. Judging by his Good Conduct Rbbon, the stars ≠ his service time, something imposible today. Gunnery Sgt. Ermey went to mast?

42

NaCly Dog,

His Good Conduct Medal/Ribbon does equal his service time. He served 11+ years. Marines receive a GC Medal/Award for 3 years good conduct. He has 3 of them. Each service stripe on his left sleeve is for 4 years. So he's okay.

Posted by: ExSnipe at March 24, 2013 06:43 PM (PBm/l)

56 Not to take anything away from Ermey, but... His rank of Gunnery Sergeant is honorary. He left the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant.

Posted by: Chef Mojo at March 24, 2013 06:57 PM (t0YFn)

57 I love him!  We used to watch the first 10 minutes of FMJ just to get fired up at 0200 on pick up nights.

He was at SHOT in Vegas in Jan, but the line was 200 douchebags deep so we skipped and hit the bar.

Not a Marine badge.  You're looking for the Combat Action Ribbon.

Only army infantry (1x's) get the CIB.

59 Best goddam drill instructor in all of  Hollyweird. Gunny taught Lou Gossett Jr. how to sound off like he's got a pair and he wound up winning an academy award. But the old Gunny's still number one with FMJ and Boys In Company C (a fucking Hollyweird name if ever there was one- every Marine knows it shoulda been called Charlie Company Pukes Kick Ass And Take Names).

61

Had a drill sergeant just like the Ol' Gunny in Army Infantry Basic/AIT. And we had a guy just like Pyle. He got the blanket party as well...this was all before the movie came out, mind you.  They took him to the hospital that night, and he never came back. No messy incident in the head...thankfully.

The rest of us got grass drills that night, for hours on end. Georgia mid-summer nighttime in the sand pit. ANYBODY fu(ks up, EVERYBODY pays!!

That DS ended up getting Drill Sergeant of the Cycle award, even after CID and Congress critters came calling. He was on CQ that night...word was he supplied the rope.

Truth be told, even though he was the biggest bastard I have ever met, he probably saved my wretched life.

Happy birthday, Gunny.

As an 'ol Army guy, and a vet of three wars, I have to admit the best sleeping I did in a combat zone was when I knew there were Marine snipers on the perimeter.

Happy B-Day Gunny.  Semper Fi!

Posted by: Diogenes at March 25, 2013 06:13 AM (1/RiT)

69 R. Lee Ermy is not a gunnery sergeant. The rank of gunnery sergeant was bestowed as honorary. He is a staff sergeant. It is purely for showmanship. Manolo knows. Manolo was a real gunnery sergeant. It was purely for leadership. Ooh-rah. @65: It's the CAR, not the "CAB." Manolo has one of those, too. And a gold star for his second award (Operation Just Cause and Operation Desert Storm). A CAB is what Marines take to go on liberty to Kinville after lots of humps in NTA. Ain't that right, Devil Dogs?! @64: The Marines can wear the Basic Parachutist badge if they attend jump school, and it's the same as the Army's. Marines don't have to be reconnaissance to earn jump wings. Marines who complete a certain amount of day and night jumps qualify for gold Naval jump wings. A lot of ANGLICO (Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company) Marines earn wings and SCUBA bubbles. From time to time you see average Marines with basic parachutist wings. Naval aviator wings come in multiple forms, including pilot and air crew (AC), which are gold. Air crew wings are swapped for silver, squat-looking wings after Marine air crew engage in combat. Navigators also wear wings.

Posted by: Manolo at March 25, 2013 07:58 AM (PttbO)

70 Staff Sergeant R. Lee Ermey's awards are: Ribbons (Lowest to Highest): Navy-Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, and the Marine Corps Drill Instructor Ribbon. Medals: Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm device, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. The two hash marks he wears on his sleeves show he completed eight years or more (but less than 12 years) of Marine Corps service. Dress Blue "A" is full-size medals, ribbons for awards, and badges except marksmanship badges. Dress Blue "B" is ribbons only for both medals and awards, marksmanship badges, and other badges.

72 "A CAB is what Marines take to go on liberty to Kinville after lots of humps in NTA. Ain't that right, Devil Dogs?!"

Only for those spoiled Marines down near mainside.

Otherwise, Marines hump to Dogpatch (little town outside of Schawb... never knew its name) and save the cab money for more beer.

73 @72: I knew Oki was heaven when I saw my first beer vending machine in the barracks. BEER VENDING MACHINES! Ever had a Habu Saki boilermaker?

Posted by: Manolo at March 25, 2013 11:36 AM (PttbO)

74 Don't recall the Habu Saki boilermaker, but I do recall the Kamikazi. 3 oz whiskey, 3 oz saki, warmed to body temp, slam it down, feel the numb.

I also recall Sapporo beer coming in half gallon bottles. Was fun making some drinking money betting newbs that they couldn't drink a whole sixpack of the local brew.

And then there was the ol' 'absenth shooters with braun chasers.

Our barracks mamasan used to arrange for booze to be brought to us in the fields.

What kind of bees don't fly!!

Posted by: Grimmy at March 25, 2013 09:37 PM (uUsh9)

75 @74: Wannabees! Notice SSgt. Ermey's out of regs? First, his damn eyebrows are longer than a mamasan's slit trench. Second, he's wearing Dress Blue "A" and he ain't got no daggone stinkin' dress gloves on! WTF, over?!
