Harvey Weinstein Hired Obama Spokeswoman Jennifer Cutter to Promote "Silver Linings Playbook"

A lot of cross promotion between DC, Hollywood for Ugly People, and Hollywood, DC for Dumb People.

Nobody announced her participation in the [Silver Linings Playbook] campaign, and to the casual observer, she just seemed like another Beltway insider who just happened to be moved to frequently declare her love for the movie on Twitter, writing on February 14, Â“We're a little over a week away from Oscars. Check out the making of Silver Linings Playbook. Love this movieÂ” (and then providing a link to the trailer). Or Â“Oscar week Â– who are you routing [sic] for?Â” with a link to an article about SLP a week later. And for a web extra Q&A for ABCÂ’s This Week, she was asked her favorite film. Â“WeÂ’re in Oscar season so IÂ’m gonna talk about my favorite film this year,Â” she said. Â“My favorite is actually Silver Linings Playbook. That itÂ’s so real and identifiable to everybody in life.Â”

With top rivals Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty both having big political angles that resonated beyond Hollywood, our sources tell us that Cutter was hired to tout SLP not just as a well-made movie, but a culturally relevant and especially politically significant film that was shaping the national conversation about mental health triggered in part by the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

Vulture also called the Best Picture for Argo a month and a half ago.

1. Hollywood finds itself fascinating.

While audiences can be lukewarm on movies about actors and show business, the Academy membership loves nominating them and often gives them the ultimate prize: Last year, The ArtistÂ’s tale of old Hollywood hadnÂ’t cracked $40 million domestically by the time the Oscars were held, but it was still named Best Picture. In 2003, Chicago (showbiz and jazz hands!) won out over far more serious, somber dramas like The Hours, Gangs of New York, and The Pianist. And the aforementioned marketing chief theorizes that the reason The KingÂ’s Speech won two years ago was because, while it wasnÂ’t about Hollywood, it was about learning how to play a role one is afraid to play, which strikes a chord with the AcademyÂ’s acting branch.
There is one more example that undoubtedly gives chilling flashbacks to Steven Spielberg, his Lincoln no longer a safe front-runner: In 1999, his Saving Private Ryan was upset in the Best Picture race by yet another comedy about the business of entertainment: Shakespeare in Love, which co-starred Â— damn him! Â— Ben Affleck, playing an actor, no less.

Makes perfect sense. If I'd bothered to read anything about the Oscar race I probably would have realized this.

And then, of course, they had the first lady come out to give it its already-known prize.

And Harvey Weinstein -- who hired Stephanie Cutter to promote his own film, pushing a fake political angle -- arranged it.

In fairness, the Artist was a very good movie, I think hampered in part by the fact that people didn't want to pay $8-10 to see a silent film on the big screen.

(The wife and I specifically rented it because of that, it had nothing that paying a premium to see on the big screen was worth. In fact it almost seemed like it was filmed for smaller screens.)

There's a scene that should have been cut out of the film, where Scorsese spends about 20 mins going over the early years of "moving pictures" completely irrelevant to the story at hand. Gangs was lousy. Daniel Day-Lewis gave a good performance, but the movie just looked cheap (the montage sequence at the end actually made me laugh). It didn't get an Oscar because it wasn't very good, IMO, not because it wasn't about Hollywood.

And I adored The Artist, but the article's spot on with that one.

61 I've walked out of two movies in the last 30 years. One was "Nomads," with Pierce Brosnan, which my wife dragged me to and which we both agree is te worst movie we ever paid to see.

The other was "Silver Linings Playbook," which I left after about an hour. No character in the movie remotely appealed to me, and the writers apparently substituted the liberal and gratuitous use of the f-bomb for any real effort. I'm no prude or stranger to the use of the word, but when it repeatedly comes at you faster than a grandma with a cheetah strapped to her back ...

THey are so meta it's ridiculous.    I'll quote Roger Kimball, from   his book "Rape of the Masters," which is one of my favorite books of anything ever:

The reason H-wood so loves Argo   isn't because it's a well-made film that portrays a historically accurate depiction of a     tense, highly dangerous moment in American history, in which the actors and the crew all did a wonderful job.   I haven't seen the movie, so I have no idea if any of that is even true.   H-wood loves Argo    because it represents the power of pretend.    It proves that they,   poor players that they be, as they strut     and fret their hour upon the stage, are    in fact doing something powerful.         In their teeny tiny brains,    though     they might not wield a gun like our men and women in uniform, they're effecting just as much change in the world.      They aren't    merely    providing entertainment; they're providing      enlightenment.    They aren't     simply     captivating an audience for two hours, after which the audience goes home and goes about their day.      No no -- they're     SAVING LIVES.

But in their rush to be imaginary heroes,    they    tend to forget the closing of MacBeth's final soliloquy.

I've been watching House of Cards and I must say I do like it. The main character is a democrat (but they don't actually point that out until a few episodes in.)

Plus he's just short of "evil."

If people open their eyes and realize that DC really does work much like that, maybe we'd start getting some where.

(The story line where the unions try to tank his education bill is actually caused my wife to go "unions ruin everything don't they.")

Short list of movies I have loved over the last several years: Zombieland, Kick-A**, and.... I'm sorta drawing a blank.

I liked Cabin in the Woods, but didn't love it. Same for The Avengers.

Needless to say, none of those films win Oscars. I know we're supposed to immerse ourselves in the popular culture because we are, but frankly I can't think of too many things less interesting than Oscars. Grammys of course, but that goes without saying.

Here's the thing though. Hastings seems (again seems) to lean more libertarian than anything.

Secondly a new change in format could benefit the right if we stepped up and took advantage of it. Netflix is less concerned with weekly viewership than they are with eyes over the long haul, and their model is uniquely situated to one off "long mini-series" styles (for lack of a better term.) We'd just have to take advantage of it.

House of Cards is interesting, and it's taken sideways shots at unions while pointing out that environmentalism is often just a way of funneling money to various constituent groups. Yeah it could turn on us (or I could be misreading it.) But right now it's sure as hell more friend than NBC or anyone else.

111 I would imagine insiders have a pretty good idea who's winning, there may not be a fix. Everyone who's voting for these movies, actors, producers, writers, young and old, they all live in the same area and go to the same parties. They talk about who their voting for, positives and negatives of each movie. They also get bored with flicks after a while, I'm sure that's why Crash beat out Brokeback Mountain. Some films run out of steam by the time they get to the voting period.
