Biochemistry News:

Bioengineered yeast can synthesize malaria drug

Medicine News:

Lasers, what can't they do?

Human Physiology News:

Circumcision changes penis biology

Yuck:

To measure these changes, the researchers enlisted 156 uncircumcised, married men in Uganda and obtained swabs from under each manÂ’s foreskin. Roughly half of the men were then randomly assigned to get circumcised. A year later, researchers again took swabs.

Which would be worse: getting the circumcision, or acquiring 2x156 penis swabs? Discuss.

136 On April 15, the day the Tsarnaevs set off the pressure cooker bombs on Boylston Street, there were 40 bombings and shootings across Iraq that took the lives of 75 and wounded 350. No one in the outside world knows the names of those who set off these bombs, and no one cares. And Baghdad was not locked down. How, then, when these brothers are now as well-known as Timothy McVeigh, if not Osama bin Laden, and they committed an atrocity that mesmerized America for a week, and they forced a lockdown of one of our greatest cities, can it be said that they failed – as terrorists?

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a next generation user interface which can accurately detect the users finger and what it is touching, creating an interactive touchscreen-like system, using objects in the real word.

"We think paper and many other objects could be manipulated by touching them, as with a touchscreen. This system doesn't use any special hardware; it consists of just a device like an ordinary webcam, plus a commercial projector. Its capabilities are achieved by image processing technology."

242 Regarding letting babies s**t all over, fine, mostly it didn't stink from mine, and they never, as in NOT EVER, had anything that would transmit to others through faeces. But I never let them do it except under the most limited circumstances (i.e., perfect prophylaxis). I suspect that those whose spawn s**t willy-nilly propagate the worst kind of faeces, like a Ugandan version of Fritz in Jean-Luc Godard's infamous "Week End" (1967) who just don't care what gets underneath: animal, vegetable, mineral, no matter.

"The cost has gone from $143 million a few years ago to $2.2 billion today," Republican Louisiana Sen. David Vitter said, noting that today's cost is 15 times what it was. The cost of the program increased dramatically after cellphones were added in 2008. Only low-income people on welfare and food stamps legally qualify, but some lawmakers say the program is out of control.

This is the problem we face. Whatever the merits of the original program, it is now just a phone giveaway. Cell phones are useful and fun certainly, but by any stretch this is the kind of thing you are supposed to get when you have a job and pay your own bills.

But now we have a clientele for this program that will fight hard for it. And with ~100M taxpayers, it is 'only' costing us $20 each. Are we going to push as hard to save $20 as the Obamaphonics will fight to save there $200+/year? Probably not.

Yes, we should get our $20 each per year back and drop the program. I heard Rush say months ago that Reagan stared it and we should have it only for land lines for elderly people that wouldn't have a clue how to use a cell phone. I know of people that were paid cash every week for over 20 years, coming home with $2,000 to $3,000 per week, lying on tax returns, with subsidized housing and getting huge tax refunds. 300 Thanks for the Celeste and Sydney vid. Once they get their balance back, someone should teach them rifle marksmanship. Yes, even in the modern Bay State, where Lexington and Concord were/are. It was one by the village clock, When he galloped into Lexington. He saw the gilded weathercock Swim in the moonlight as he passed, And the meeting-house windows, black and bare, Gaze at him with a spectral glare, As if they already stood aghast At the bloody work they would look upon. It was two by the village clock, When he came to the bridge in Concord town. He heard the bleating of the flock, And the twitter of birds among the trees, And felt the breath of the morning breeze Blowing over the meadow brown. And one was safe and asleep in his bed Who at the bridge would be first to fall, Who that day would be lying dead, Pierced by a British musket ball. You know the rest. In the books you have read How the British Regulars fired and fled,--- How the farmers gave them ball for ball, From behind each fence and farmyard wall, Chasing the redcoats down the lane, Then crossing the fields to emerge again Under the trees at the turn of the road, And only pausing to fire and load.

Goddamned Obama and his constant giveaway bullshit.

What? What's that you say?

Cell phones were added in 2008 and Obama didn't take office till 2009?

Why yes. Yes, you're right. The guy who was in charge when this bullshit free cell phone business got going was that utterly worthless sack of shit George W. Bush, the "compassionate conservative".

Meanwhile, there was a Politico piece this week saying about GWB in post-Presidential retirement, "'You have no idea how relieved he is to be out of the game,' one of his oldest friends said. 'He doesnÂ’t miss politics even a little.'"

You have no idea how relieved I am to have Bush out of the game. I don't miss him even a little.

His endless disastrous fuckups ruined the GOP brand and paved the way for the ascent of Obama. But, hey, family tradition. GWB was just building on his father's work of trashing the Reagan legacy. Bushes delenda est.

I know the one kid was a student but what about the older one. More of Obamas girlfriends have been interviewed than these guys co workers. 2) I know where those 3m missing bush voters went. They either died or told the GOP to go fuck itself after being called bigots, nazis, xenophobic and slave owners by McCain and graham et al the last immigration go around. I was reading an article about why Obama keeps pushing gun control and immigration even though it doesn't poll well for him. The answer is obvious he does it to get enough repubtards to cave so it can be used against THEM. In a game of inches centimeters matter. Least that's what my prom date said.

A bunch of my uncles, aunts, and cousins all graduated from there. Banged a chick while she was a student there. It is Hampden-Sydney's bitch in sports, but to be fair, Hampden-Sydney is the Stanford of Virginia in D3 athletics. Politics wise, Roanoke College is probably more conservative than most schools in the state, but most of the private schools tend to be that way. The public ones tend to be left leaning with the student bodies, VMI excepted.

Discuss.

Pretty obvious the elder Tsarnaev was an at least occasional pot dealer. Probably also having pulled some cash from his nitwit white liberal wife's family (her dad is an MD).

As for the Mercedes, take a look at the immigrant friends at UMass of the younger Tsarnaev, one of whom drives a shiny spiffy late model BMW. Seems from what I've read that they were leasing it but not making the lease payments. A lot of that about in the Obamaconomy.

427 One of the core problems with socialism is that is presumes that people will work even if there is no benefit to them in doing so.
***
In the real wold most people would rather sit at home watching TV, or whatever, instead of doing work.

So you have this laughable situation where the economy keeps having to be project down as more and more people get corrupted by the ease of the easy life in the socialist system.

Eventually though the powers that be figure out that while socialism is a great system, they unfortunately have inherited the most slothful, pathetic subjects imaginable, so they have to turn to force, and therein exhibits the socialism that we see in the Soviet Union...

I saw a Democrat pol recently opining that we should let unemployment insurance last indefinitely. He wasn't a complete fool though and added that if you were unemployed for some period of time the government would force you to take a job that they would find/create  for you. Exactly how this forcing would work wasn't clear. Would they cut you off? What if you showed up as work...and slacked off?

Still, I would have loved to see the Rs give this commentary a wider audience, because this reflects the reality we face.

The choice isn't between conservative "austerity" and liberal...uh...whatever the hell liberals think they are doing. The choice is between doing something about the graft that underlies the whole system now, when it will be easier, or later, when it will be harder.

Do you want to have to go get a real job now, or have the government put you in one with some kind of criminal punishment in the offing if you don't do it well?

464 I wonder what goes through a liberal's mind when confronted with contrary evidence.

Linked an article on Facebook on how Evil Makes Liberals Stupid, which is a Powerline article critiquing how various liberals have reacted with "integrative complexity" to the Boston bombings.

A reliably liberal Canadian attacked the article as a strawman, then shifted to a personal attack, "gee, why don't you care to understand why the bombing  happened?", and when pressed further, threw out the Crusades.

I find it confusing as he is surrendering the argument in a way that would make me ashamed, but I guess I lack the complexity to be a "liberal".

from My Pet Jawa.  FBI did not so anything about shitbag number 2 visiting Chechen terrorists six (6) times because the State department WILL NOT  classify Chechen Islamic extremists as terrorists.  Read it and weep

But if the FBI was notified late last year that Tamerlan Tsarnaev had visited a known extremist mosque in Dagestan and then the FBI did nothing? Didn't investigate. Let him off the hook because he had been cleared the year before?

Well, somebody definitely needs to be fired then.

People are dead. And why?

Was it laziness? He'd been cleared and therefore no need to re-investigate him. Earth to whoever: people change. And not always for the better.

Or was it an insidious PC that the FBI didn't want to offend the sensibilities of Muslims? Our government wouldn't want to appear to be "Islamophobic" now, would it?

Or maybe we have the State Department to blame here? To this day, the State Department refuses to designate the Islamic Emirate of the Caucuses, it's emirs, and it's related branches as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

And we're not just talking about Obama's State Department, this goes back to the Bush years too.

This despite clear acts of terror by the group and clear ties to al Qaeda.

So, assume the Russians report that Tamerlan Tsarnaev is meeting with terrorists. But the terrorists aren't considered terrorists by the State Department. Would an FBI agent have to pass on investigating further since there was "no relationships with terrorists"?

Simply because the cowards in State refuse to designate a group as "terrorists" doesn't make them any less so. And if federal agents are constrained from doing their jobs because of this, then whoever continues to make the decision to keep the Chechen jihadis off the terror list has blood on their hands.

I know that's a lot of ifs, but isn't it about time to designate the Islamist jihadis fighting in Russia terrorists?

I just watched a clip of The McLaughlin Group where McLaughlin suggested Michael Bloomberg as a good choice for the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination, saying he had done a fabulous job balancing New York's budget.   Pat Buchanan basically said that there was no way in hell the Republicans would vote for a left wing nanny statist and JM dismissed his point out of hand.  He said the "Coca-Cola" thing wasn't a big deal.

556 I just watched a clip of The McLaughlin Group where McLaughlin suggested Michael Bloomberg as a good choice for the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination, saying he had done a fabulous job balancing New York's budget. Pat Buchanan basically said that there was no way in hell the Republicans would vote fora left wing nanny statist and JM dismissed his point out of hand. He said the "Coca-Cola" thing wasn't a big deal.

Posted by: Reggie1971 at April 23, 2013 01:06 AM

If it was just the "Coca-Cola thing" it wouldn't be a deal breaker, but the man can't look at a soft pretzel without thinking of ways to ban it

His "fabulous job" of balancing NYC's budget is owed simply to the stock market bubble. If the Fed wasn't printing cash to pump in, Nanny would be hat in hand with Philly, Detroit, and Stockton looking for a bailout

McLaughlin suffers from Senile Old Liberal Syndrome

If these people are so hard working and capitalistic, why do their countries of origin suck so horribly?

Hard working I get. Peasants work their asses off everywhere. But why do we need peasants here? Part of what this country was founded around was doing away with the concept of peasantry, for a man to no longer be bound to a lord and land.

Illegal alien labor disrupts the feedback system that lets us know when we need to increase or decrease our rate of admission of new immigrants. Instead, illegal labor provides a substitute for slavery, providing an underclass that can be exploited. Actually, illegal alien laborers can be worse off than slaves. Slaves were a capital investment. Costly and not disposable. You had to feed and maintain them.

Illegals are entirely disposable. Juan takes ill and doesn't show up for work? Just get another Juan. Got a task to be done that is a bit dangerous and maybe illegal itself? Just get some illegals. If one of them gets killed it isn't like they can go to the police to report you, especially if you transport them to and from the place you found them in a windowless van. They're disposal!

Another reason to not have government welfare systems. A private charity is free to ignore people it determines are simply unwilling to work for their keep. At least in a rational nation where lawyers fear the results if they hassle a group of private citizens for playing favorites.

670 The ability to sue private citizens for exercising a preference is the core of why the class action (originally created as a tool for civil rights before it became a means to run shakedowns on large businesses) is evil. Yes, it means a landlord can be racist and refuse to rent to minorities but it also means a minority landlord can do the same to those outside his preferred group.

Freedom means freedom to be a jerk. You cannot call yourself free if you cannot tolerate somebody else wielding their freedom in a way you don't like, so long as that action doesn't inflict harm directly upon you.

674 Minorities aren't the problem with rentals, skells who trash the joint and don't pay are the problem for landlords.

When I was a landlord, the minority status of some prospective renter wasn't a good predictor of their future skellishness.

A Section 8 was almost always a disaster though.  You'd never get the 20% they were supposed to kick in, so you'd wind up jacking the rent accordingly so the voucher amount was inflated enough to make up the loss.  Invariably the Section 8's caused huge damage to the property too.

If I were building new Section 8 housing, there'd be no normal frame/drywall walls - I go with that 5/8" high abuse drywall they use in schools.  Some asshole wants to punch or body slam that stuff?  they're gonna break bones.  No carpets - they won't maintain them, and will sneak in animals that'll piss on them and wreck'em.  Cheap linoleum and peel/sticks.  Paint the subfloor with poly before putting the linoleum down to seal it against animal piss.

Receptacles/switches -- all commercial grade.  They'd destroy the residential crap in a year or two.  Put in more receptacles and circuits than code minimums to keep them from having to run extension cords.  They'll overload shit otherwise and they'll be wearing out breakers from resetting them 50 times a day.

I will never be a landlord again.

Posted by: @PurpAv at April 23, 2013 02:11 AM (/gHaE)

675 Drywall? <Puts on Yorkshireman hat> Luxury!

Section 8 construction would be like a penitentiary. Cinder block walls or just cement slabs. If they want to body slam that it'll just be hosed off and rented to someone else.

Section 8 housing should say in no uncertain terms: You do not want to live here. If you have no better choice than here it is time to get your life in order.
