Hey That Was My Idea
— Ace

Perfect. In related news, The Hill has signed Andrew Sullivan to write a column on "The Human Reproductive System & Other Lies."

Also joining The Hill: This dog.

"Have you guys seen Levitated Mass?!?!!"

Update: Nevermind. Politico blew it. Never trust content from Politico.

"Correction: It was our initial impression that Carville's entire
column would be dedicated to modern Republicanism and modern
conservatism. That is only the subject of his first column."

Attempting to retain some reason for this now-exposed-as-even-more-of-a-nothing-post-than-it-already-was-post...

57 i haven't gotten around to banning USS CONSTITUTION yet.  I will.

I know you guys think I'm thin skinned, and there's a reason for that: I am thin skinned.

But in addition to being thin skinned, I'm a bear on politeness.  I don't like people who get off on being rude.  These are trolls. They often pose as True Cons* as an excuse for their desire to run people down, but in their hearts they're trolls, and what they seek from social interaction is inflicting harm.

I hate these people.

* That doesn't mean hardcore conservatives are rude.  What I'm saying is, if you want to be a total asshole, you need some kind of safe harbor pretext for it.  On the right, the more conservative position is usually socially privileged, in as much as you need to argue less in its favor (i.e., it people already halfway defer to it anyway, if not outright embrace it).

It's my observation that people mask their asshole tendencies under the False Flag of some ideological purpose.  But the ideological purpose is not the real purpose.  There are all sorts of True Cons here, most of whom aren't assholes.  They actually argue instead of just dropping drive-by asshole comments.  Their actual purpose is to make a point, not lodge an insult.

The actual purpose of the False Flag Assholes is to be an asshole, because there are a lot of bent, broken, twisted, sad, and angry people in the world who can't be happy but what makes them closest to happy is to make other people sad.

Not to dwell on this, but a commenter I just banned had a long history of reading things obviously not intended for her (including those with big and serious CONTENT WARNINGS and "Do not read this" warnings) and then indulging in Outrage Theater as she deemed all and sundry around her unworthy.

Taking a chance the GOP will get it right
By James Carville

I’m a “just the facts, ma’am” kind of guy. And the facts are that the Republican Party, on both foreign and domestic policy, has gotten it all wrong. This is not to say they didn’t get it all wrong in the last century too, but we have now incontrovertible proof of massive ineptitude, disregard for facts and plain stupidity.

Like democrat party members?

yes largely but Democrats aren't the only people on earth who seek a "politics" for psychological or personality-type reasons.

It's a common syndrome.

Look, half of MY shit is my preening and counter-snobbing the left, which is just a great big I'm Better Than You taunting Chicken Dance.

And so yes, I do this.  But I try to direct it outside the tent, at people we generally agree upon constitute Fair Targets.

But there are a lot of people who don't have the reach I do and so can't get their sadism fix by attacking the left, but they still want a little sadistic kick.  So they attack the people closest to them, which would be us.

Hey, Ace (and everyone else), Politico just published this correction:

"Correction: It was our initial impression that Carville's entire column would be dedicated to modern Republicanism and modern conservatism. That is only the subject of his first column."

Unfortunately, Carville will still be writing a column.  But at least it won't be about this every week.

John McCain (R-AZ) playing online poker on his iPhone during yesterday’s Senate hearing with Secretary of State John Kerry over war with Syria, Gold Star mother Debbie Lee fired back in an exclusive comment to Breitbart News. “It infuriates me,” she said. “We are facing the possibility of sending our sons and daughters to a war, conflict, military action or whatever politically correct term you use – an action that could change the world as we know it – and McCain couldn’t care less.” Lee is the founder of America’s Mighty Warriors, a non-profit focusing on Gold Star moms. She lost her son, Navy SEAL Marc Alan Lee, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, on August 2, 2006. Navy officers said that Marc died after single-handedly fighting off enemy fighters as his team rescued a wounded soldier. He fired 100 rounds of ammunition before being killed. Lee continued, “McCain is so bored that he needs to play poker on his iPhone and then when caught jokes about it. How disgraceful!

211 no but seriously:

"Puritanism is the horrifying suspicion that somewhere out there, someone is having too good a time." -- George H.W. Bush

The internet is rife with neopuritans.  In fact the world is rife with neopuritans, but the internet is worse, because if people pulled half the crap in real life that they do online they'd get their teeth moved for them.

I remember a description of a driver type, back in Drivers Ed.  The type was called "The SuperMouse."  A mousy, inadequate man outside the car, but inside it -- protected by his bubble of steel -- he becomes aggressive, rude, and dangerous on the road.  The SuperMouse seeks to make an impact on the United States Highway System he doesn't make in his home and work lives.

214 No, Senator McCain. When a muslim yells "allahu akbar" he is NOT saying Thank God as you so eloquently put it. He is saying the equivalent to "God is great" before setting out to do great harm to someone or some group. You, sir, are an incompetent fool that should retire and disappear before removing any shred of credibility you may have left at this point.

"President ObamaÂ’s liberal activist base is adamantly opposed to military strikes in Syria, according to a new survey the Progressive Change Campaign Committee released Wednesday.

PCCC says more than 57,000 of its activists weighed in, and 73 percent of them opposed the U.S. taking action in Syria. Just 18 percent supported strikes, and just 14 percent said the U.S. should go ahead unilaterally if it canÂ’t find any allies.

Indeed, a majority of the activists donÂ’t believe Mr. Obama and Secretary of State John F. Kerry are being honest when they lay out their justifications for taking military action."

303 OT on the police dog shooting: A few weeks ago, the cops knocked on our door because our garage was open and a neighbor had called in a report about a "strange pickup truck" in the street. (Um, that would be the cleaning lady who's been doing houses in the area for about a decade.) Anyway, our feisty little 10-pound dog went nuts at the door and the freaking officer had his hand on his Taser the whole time. It was pretty unsettling.

309 >>>I don't find arguing fun.

the problem isn't arguing.  Sgt York argues with me. So does Old Sailors Poet.

They have opinions, they disagree with me, they let me know I'm wrong (in their opinion).  That's unavoidable and indeed the whole point of communication (particularly in a political commentary blog).

Argument =/= trolling.  Someone arguing is ready to spend some time on the proposition and is willing to exchange ideas.  There are rules for arguing.

One of those rules is you don't just walk into a room, call someone an asshole, and then leave.

if you want to argue someone's an asshole, that's one thing.  But if you just want to play Ding Dong Ditch, that's trolling.

Did anybody else see this?

Senator Rand PaulÂ’s amendment to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee resolution throws President ObamaÂ’s own words back at him.

The amendment quotes from a response Obama gave the Boston Globe back in 2007 as a Senator, in which Obama said that “the President does not have the power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”

Paul’s amendment then provides constitutional backing for Obama’s statement—and finally declares that “it is the sense of Congress that if this authorization fails to pass Congress, the President would be in violation of the Constitution if he were to use military force against the Government of Syria."

Not that it will make a difference to the gibbering mountebank in the White House, but it's nice to see somebody jamming TFGs verbal diarrhea right back down his throat.

On the way to work the local guy did an interview with our congressman, Ted Yoho, and he didn't seem real impressed with whatever briefing they had gotten from the administration. He said he would going to vote against any military action.

Doubtful.  If there's one thing that Obama seems to get touchy about, it's people leaking government documents without permission.  Leak something approved by Obama, and you're fine.  Leak something not approved by Obama, and you get the book thrown at you.  Manning clearly falls into the latter category, so I'd be surprised if Obama pardons him.

For example, I favor universal state-run healthcare that eliminates the private insurance industry, but do you see me talking about it?  NOOOOOO.

I'm a big fan of a unitary executive and think the Constitution is a living document, merely a 'scrap of paper' to be updated by our Lord-Executor-President as necessary from time to time, but do you see me makin' a big deal out of that in every thread?  NOOOOO.

I think Steel Panther is super gay and not nearly as funny a conceit as Ace does, but do you see me harping on it every chance I get?  NOOOOO.
