— Ace Very interesting bit of history that the mythmakers of Hollywood have, strangely enough, avoided exploring.
The book comes out in October. Or, as Hollywood knows it, Oktober.
[H]ere's the arguable game-changer: Urwand unearthed evidence that suggests the studios were not merely self-censoring in an effort to keep their shareholders, audiences, and industry and government monitors happy. Rather, he says, the studios began working in detailed coordination with Nazi officials, putting profits above principles.Largely through the Third Reich's vice consul in Los Angeles, Georg Gyssling, the Nazi-Hollywood relationship gave Hitler and his propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, effectual power over what films got made, what scenes got cut, which stars and filmmakers were blacklisted, and which Jewish studio employees in Germany were fired. The Germans demanded say not just over American films shown in Germany but over those shown anywhere. Nazi emissaries visited theaters worldwide to report back on whether promised scene cuts had in fact been carried out. If not, the officials scolded the studios and threatened to close German production and distribution markets to them. The studios, year after year, would promptly grovel and comply.

2) Supported the Nazis even as they were shipping the Jews to the camps.
3) Supported the Communists while they were starving, murdering and executing their way to a 60 million body count.

Which philosophies allow one person or a small group of people to make large decisions for everyone else? Statist philosophies like communism with a centrally planned economy, or fascism with same demand a small group in charge.
Of course those in charge should have a comfortable living, so they can be free from distractions while commanding everyone around them to produce "from their abilities". The land is rich, and those in charge should be so too.

Once the Nazis invaded Poland the Soviet Secret Services were warier of Germany than Stalin allowed himself to be, everyone grasped Molov/Ribbentrop was a Mexican standoff but Stalin was convinced the Red Orchestra would give him at least 6 months advanced warning with precision on German force disposition.
It's important to note that Soviet intelligence acquisition was not often a direct transmission to Mother Russia and often wound up orbiting the planet before Yezhov, Yagoda, or Beria in sequence had access.

Commies in the low countries and France did everything in their power to help the Nazi's defeat their own countries on orders from Moscow.
----------------
Actually, the pro-Nazi line from Moscow after the non-agression pact apparently helped cause most of the Communists in France to come to their senses. Apparently a lot of them had joined the Communists because the Communists were the only ones openly opposing the Nazis (a sad fact regarding the '30s - the Nazis and the Communists were the only two groups openly opposing each other, and quite a few people joined one group because it was the best opposition to the other, not realizing that both organizations were shadows of each other). When the Soviets suddenly reversed their anti-Nazi attitude, a good-sized chunk of the French Communists suddenly realized that taking orders from Moscow wasn't such a good idea.
Unfortunately, the French government didn't take advantage of this, and apparently jailed as many of them as they could instead of taking the time to figure out which ones could safely be given rifles and sent to the front lines. Not that it would have made a difference in the end, mind you.

37 - "And a lot of people had fled the Nazis, like Fritz Lang. "
Oh, yes, not just big names like Fritz Lang, Peter Lorre and Conrad Veidt: lots of off-camera talent came to Hollywood when the Nazis took over in 1933. It was a real brain drain from the Germany film industry; there are hardly any really memorable movies from the Nazi era. I think Leni Riefenstahl in a documentary said that German film became provincial once the Jews were purged - a huge amount of collected knowledge and expertise just departed. Not just Jews, of course: Communists and homosexuals were also kicked out. That's why it surprises me that there could have been such warm relations between the Hollywood studios and the Nazi government; they can't claim that they didn't know what was really going on - their own industry was full of German refugees who could tell them.

"Or maybe the people collaborating were higher up in the chain than those who fled the Nazis. "
I suspect that might have been it. The refugees were worker bees; the decisions were made by the guys upstairs with all the money. Those fellows didn't have direct experience living under Nazi rule; and as someone else pointed out, successful people (especially if they're rich) don't believe that they need advice from anyone, so they figured they knew it all.

So Hollywood loved Hitler, too. Color me unsurprised.
This whole Left/Right thing, the labels we ascribe to various bands of the political spectrum, doesn't work, he said, stating the obvious. We've been misleading ourselves. Whether inspired by Mein Kampf or Das Kapital, the underlying sentiment of those we oppose remains the same regardless of the (purely arbitrary) side of the spectrum we assign to them: the desire for hierarchical dominance over system-defined lessers and abject submission to those defined as betters, love of Big Brother and hatred of his enemies, the embrace of the totalitarian/authoritarian impulse. Some people--the cynical side of me thinks maybe most people--seem to want to be slaves of one sort or another. Those with ambition go after the overseer's job.

First time I saw the Academy award winning great movie, Best Times Of Our Lives when I was a teenager, I was suprised by the scene where the man sitting at the soda fountain counter started bitching about the war like the left bitched about Iraq , (at that time for me my reference would have been Vietnam) .
Anyway, I had thought as a kid that every single person in the United States had supported WWII without question. I guess I always knew that History was summarized with mostly just the good parts but that really opened my eyes to become interested in the details.

I suspect the "Tornado" angle of the script wasn't the original hook for the film. It seemed like they originally wrote it as a general "Shark Storm" event with the Tornado emphasis added by the marketing team after the fact. The actual Sharknado didn't occur until very late in the movie.
Also, I hope they make a "YetiQuake" movie. The plot can involve a freak earthquake deep in the Himalayan mountains that causes the Yeti population to move to lower ground, pissed that their rest was disturbed and they proceed to terrorize the local villagers.

Texas Senate convenes to debate abortion bill
Every person who enters the gallery will be issued a copy those rules, which stipulate there can be no demonstrations or attempts to disrupt the chamber's work. I would bet on a hung jury or--at the very least--a very long deliberation. It only takes one intransigent juror. Remember: the prosecution enjoined them to ignore the evidence and vote with their emotions. The more level-headed jurors will spend the next several hours convincing the holdout(s) to go with what's been presented to them. I doubt they'll succeed. One cannot use reason against an emotional appeal except to say that how one feels about it is irrelevant to the facts.

For example, my wife and I were watching "Casablanca" the other day. With the exception of Bogart and a few of the principals (Bergman, Greenstreet, Rains), practically everyone in the cast was a European refugee, as was the director. The writers were Jewish, as were the producers. It was planned as an anti-Nazi film, and work was being done on it long before Pearl Harbor, yet somehow, I doubt if it met Himmler's canon of acceptability.
Or "To Be Or Not To Be", directed by a German Jewish refugee, which portrayed the Nazis as clowns. Or "The Great Dictator".
I'm sure there were plenty of Soroses among the Hollywood "elite"; but clearly, not all of them were that vile, not by a long shot.

But given some of the plot points (for instance, the occupation of France), the film was obviously started in earnest only after the war had started. Germany's naked aggression no doubt helped curb some of the studio enthusiasm for the Nazis.

You aren't making any sense.
First of all, Israel is not an "apartheid" state, since Arabs have full citizenship, and are in the Knesset.
Second, it is obvious that you are new around here, because the tone is about 99.9% pro-Israel. I really don't understand where you got that impression.
Third, there is a strong sensibility on AOSHQ that we are over-involved in the world, and that withdrawing our troops absent a strong and clear reason to be deployed is a rational policy. That certainly flies in the face of your comment.
The other stuff in your comment is just too stupid to respond to.
