You've all read about the National Tap Everyone's Phone program by now, but if you haven't:
Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered.
That's per Glenn Greenwald, who was leaked the court order.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation says this isn't even legal, and that the law the order is supposedly based upon still requires an individualized target, not the entire country:

In contrast, the order leaked to the Guardian affects “millions and millions of innocent people. There’s no way all of our calling records are relevant to a terrorism investigation.”“I don’t think Congress thought it was authorizing dragnet surveillance” when it passed the Patriot Act, Cohn says. “I don’t think Americans think that’s OK. I would be shocked if the majority of congressmen thought it’s okay.”

An expert in this aspect of the law said Wednesday night that the order appears to be a routine renewal of a similar order first issued by the same court in 2006. The expert, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, said that the order is reissued routinely every 90 days and that it is not related to any particular investigation by the FBI or any other agency.

There is no indication that this order to Verizon was unique or novel. It is very likely that business records orders like this exist for every major American telecommunication company, meaning that, if you make calls in the United States, the NSA has those records. And this has been going on for at least 7 years, and probably longer.
This type of untargeted, wholly domestic surveillance is
exactly what EFF, and others, have been suing about for years. In 2006, USA
Today published a story disclosing that the NSA had compiled a massive database
of call records from American telecommunications companies. Our case, Jewel v.
NSA, challenging the legality of the NSAÂ’s domestic spying program, has been
pending since 2008, but it's predecessor, Hepting v. AT&T filed in 2006,
alleged the same surveillance. In 2011, on the 10th Anniversary of the Patriot
Act, we filed a FOIA lawsuit against the Department of Justice for records
about the government’s use of Section 215 – the legal authority the government
was relying on to perform this type of untargeted surveillance.

This morning Customs’ Office of Field Operations here in Washington, DC announced that they will begin enforcement of the “10+2” rule on July 9.
Between the November 25, 2008 publication of their Interim Final Rule and now, Customs has been working to assess and improve compliance with the requirements. In addition, they wanted to have the new ACE M1 (import manifest) fully operational. It is their belief that trade participants have had adequate time to elevate their level of performance to fully comply with the regulations. They also believe that ACE M1 is fully operational.
Customs noted that, while the local port offices will take the lead in generating liquidated damage penalties, as required in the IFR, Customs Headquarters here in WDC will review all cases prior to sending. In this way, Customs intends to validate and mitigate the number of cases sent out.
In further clarifying their enforcement intent, they said that if the ISF is due on July 9 then it will be enforced. That is, if a ship is already 48 hours outside the foreign port, the “10+2” will not be formally enforced.

The differences between Obammy's phone spying and Bush's version of the program are the same as the differences between Fast and Furious and Wide Receiver, but reversed:
Operation Wide Receiver sold guns equipped with RFID chips to Mexican cartels. These guns were tracked and interdicted at the border. An effort was made to prevent the guns from falling into the cartels' hands.
Bush's phone surveillance program focused on phone records specifically connected to terrorist directories, and did not apply to purely domestic calls. An effort was made to focus attention on known terrorism hotbeds and between individuals or groups suspected of terrorist activity, while not invading the privacy of purely domestic phone calls between parties who were under no suspicion of wrongdoing.
Operation Fast and Furious forced gun dealers to sell weapons to straw purchasers for Mexican drug cartels. These guns were not tracked in any way, were not interdicted before crossing into Mexico, and could not be identified unless and until they showed up at the actual scene of a crime. No effort was made to prevent guns from getting into the hands of Mexican cartels, and anyone who protested was either blacklisted or told to sit down and shut up.
Obammy's phone surveillance is a sweeping demand for EVERY SINGLE PHONE RECORD of EVERY VERIZON CUSTOMER, regardless of whether they're under suspicion of a wrongdoing or not, made during a three month period. This includes ALL calls, not just those made to foreign countries. If youc all your hairdresser to set up an appointment, the NSA knows. The information turned over to the NSA includes:
"...the phone numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as are location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls...."
I'm trying to figure out what "unique identifiers" might be beyond phone number and location. Perhaps the names of the parties involved? Their SSNs? Who the hell knows?
I had my problems with Bush, but at least I can believe that he DIDN'T want to snoop on everyday Americans going about their daily lives. With Obammy? Every single suspicion I've ever had about him just keeps getting more and more likely to be true by the day.

Its bad enough reading this. I just had a Census worker leave my front door. Earlier this winter I had received a survey, I returned it by saying there were 2 people who live here and we both worked.
So the survey lady starts asking me what my name is and my wife's name. I asked what the hell does this have to do with a survey. Then she got into demographics such as marriages, divorces, whens, and then the money. I politely told her to each of her ? I don't recall.
So since I am a right winger, defiant to the Census bureau, am a Verizon subscriber guess my days as a practicing Moron are numbered.

I am taking my expensive gin with me. Here on Coast they are mostly puny water spouts who could kill but are nothing like the 2.6 mile monster in Oklahoma. We had one, about 15 yrs ago, shoot from river, skirt right next to house, and tear off tile roof of a shopping center east of us. Husband and one son saw debris flying and got in a closet. Damage was a shredded screen and fireplace doors opened (glass doors) from downdraft and shot soot 5 feet across a room. They said you could hear the concrete block/stucco walls creaking. It was a 1 on scale. Oh, and it did sound like a train.
