— Ace Why? Because environmentalists are now messing with their ish. Specifically, the oceans have worn away their beachfronts to almost nothing. The Hollywood millionaires would like to dredge up seafloor (with their own money... they claim) and build their beach lines back up, but the environmentalists say Nay, let us "retreat" (demolish homes or move them back) and let nature settle into its "natural state."

Ha ha ha. I love it when liberals get caught in their own hypocrisy. Like the gay couple asking the Supreme Court to overturn DOMA because the one partner was penalized by the estate tax when her 1 percenter partner died.
Hey I have an idea - Why don't we just rid ourselves of the evil estate tax because its unfair to everyone (double taxation)!

On the one hand, screw the environmentalists.
On the other hand, I'd love watching a 30mil house just get reclaimed by the ocean (not because "nature" or anything, just a bit of schadenfreude.)
And on my "third" hand, they'll try to get tax dollars for this, you just know it.
It should have been a stupid choice to build there (economically speaking) but lots of subsidies in things like flood insurance made that not so. So I'm conflicted.

I think rooting for the enviroweenies is the best bet.
A) it means a lot of Hollyweirdoes will be forced to spend a shit load of money to move their homes, or else have to pull up stakes and move somewhere else; and
B) These things always, always, always have unexpected environmental impacts that take the enviroweenies by complete surprise. "We didn't think all those condors would fly into those windmills! But... green energy!!!" Their internal conflict is a beautiful thing to watch.

Well this is clearly a case of confusion over what "letting nature take it's course" is.
My guess is some development set this mess into motion in the first place, so letting nature go is likely to make it worse than fixing the problem.
Most erosion around developed sites works this way. Typically once you develop something it's far better for the environment to maintain it than it is to let it go.
(Better != cheaper.)

We sometimes forget how fragile the far-Left coalition is. We tend to think of them (as they no doubt think of us) as a lockstepping, goose-stepping monolithic bloc. To be sure, they are more party-line disciplined than we are, but maybe that's simply due to the individualistic streak inherent to conservative-minded people. Anyway, I hope their respective disagreements about the merits of beachfront property grow increasingly violent and culminates in an orgy of bloodshed and cannabalism, but that's just me.

Why stop there? By all means, let's tear down the levees in New Orleans, the Hoover Dam and stop engineering the Mississippi. Also, let people only wear animal skins and use sticks for tools. Houses -- all of them -- have to go. As does electricity. And heat.
How do these assholes get taken seriously? The natural state is not desirable -- it's why we put up walls to get away from it.

I see tons of ads for federal flood insurance here. While the Mississippi valley is certainly a flood plain lots of that is farmland, so flooding does crop damage but not much else (that would be covered by flood insurance.)
There's some areas that are cheap housing that sit in flood plains but everyone knows they're in a flood plain.
The only conclusion I can reach is the Federal government is trying to "normalize" the pool by getting suckers to buy in who wouldn't only see floods in a Noah's Ark situation. Seriously. Technically I live in a "moderate" flood zone even though if you look at the actual charts it's alike a 5000 year flood. The Creek is 2 miles away and down about 300 ft (vertical drop.) You do the math.

The FACT is you cannot fight the ocean. Even Obama could not cause the seas to begin to recede. Coastlines are constantly changing, and nothing man can do will alter the inevitable. Where I live, about 50 miles inland, we still find the occasional sea shell because this area was once under water - and will be again, almost certainly.
But notice that every single place "renourished" needs another dose in a few years, and then another, and another, and yet the shoreline still recedes. Gradually, incrementally, but inexorably.
The Army Corps of Engineers might as well put up monuments at the sites of their beach renourishment projects reading, "Look upon my works, ye mighty - and dismay!"

I actually walked down to the creek last week on my exercise walk. Were I the house about 200 feet from it I might consider some flood insurance, but other than that, no so much. (It's decidedly not a dry creek).
Heck even in the Chesterfield valley (where they built the 500 year flood walk making the land developable for the first time) I'm told all the places are built to be able to quickly remove anything of value so nothing but a steel frame is exposed to water.

The building case as a direct result of the flood wall. Any flood heading that direction is going to have a warning first. And supposedly many of the places down there took that into account during the building.
I'm not saying there won't be loss, but the plan is to evacuate, let everything flood over and then just quickly clean up. We'll see how well it goes. (I was told some of the buildings even have carpet that's not tacked down so it can be rolled up and moved.)

Hah. No offense, but you're new at watching commies burn each other to a crisp, aren't you?
When no logic meets no logic we call it "entertainment."

Funny, but we know how this will turn out:
1) The Hollywood types will ignore the enviros and just do whatever they please. They will then make up for it by opposing keystone, Fracking, etc. and not lose a minute of sleep over the hypocracy.
2) And there is no way in hell they're actually going to pay for this. Harry Reid will slip some money into an appropriations bill, probably one meant to help kids, police/firefighters or the environment, and the Republicans will either be too dumb to catch it or not care.
It's like how they're all in favor of raising income tax rates. The reason they're in favor of that is that they pay almost no actual income tax. They incorporate themselves, their company loans them out to the studio for the picture, and then they pocket the fee using the rate for capital gains. Similar to the dodge used by the hedge fund pukes.
Now how do I incorporate myself...

Oh, I know you can't tell it's there because of the ginormous bridge out of Long Beach.
I though that whole area was just refinerys and stuff. At least that's what used to be there back in 1968.
The last time I set foot in Cali was 1970. It was squirrelly then.
It may have improved a bit after I was gone but not for long.

They don't think of money the same way that we do.
They get so much of it for little actual work that they have lost all sense of it's worth. (and it's gotten worthless as time has gone on)
You or I would KILL just to have the opportunity to act for millions.
For them it flows to them like a natural spring. And money begets money. Invested even half way wisely, 2-5 million will most anyone on a path to never being in need.
Oh, yeah, now and then we hear about some wash upped has been being smoked in some cardboard box in downtown LA but the reality is, it's a gravy train. They just have to pay their dues now and then because it's social/hive mind thing and once the hive starts to reject you, it's buy buy limos and beach houses and hello to a condo in Stockton. Or Riverside. Maybe even a trailer out near Chino Prison.

They're not going to piss off their cash cows, and the CA EPA regulators will get a call from Moonbeam telling them to get their minds right on this issue
The beaches will be replenished and any money the beautiful people shell out for it will be reimbursed through tax credits
