1 The army song! I love it. As a former infantryman I salute those men. They are true heros.

2 God bless all who served. WWII guys are very special.

Posted by: Liberty Lover at April 27, 2013 07:50 AM (eQ4W/)

3 Well dang, they left out the marine corps song.

6 Um. Caisson Song. I know it's technically "the caissons go rolling along". BUT, to us army guys it's the army song.

Posted by: Midaz at April 27, 2013 07:55 AM (pbWXF)

7 As soon as I can get the lighting, makeup, wardrobe, and camera crews over here, I'm going to honor them with a spontaneous picture of me standing by myself. I, I, I; me, me, me. (I have a quota)

8 Sad really. We are losing so many each day. The Honor Guard at the Navy Reserve Center is probably the busiest Unit there.

I ran into an Army Chaplain the other day, in uniform. I stopped to talk, and asked how he happened to be in town. It was for a burial detail. I asked him if they had trouble finding buglers these days. He said, "Yes, but if we can't line one up, we use a boom box". I felt a little sick to my stomach...

Posted by: Mike Hammer at April 27, 2013 12:03 PM (aDwsi) My dad (Navy WWII vet) died in 2002 and his brother (my uncle) arranged a military ceremony. They fired the salute, played Taps, and presented me with the flag. Only later did I see them retrieve the boom box from where it had been tastefully concealed. The sound quality was good and I didn't even notice it until I saw it. They did a good job and I had no complaints. I had read a magazine article about the shortage of buglers a few months earlier, so I wasn't surprised or disappointed.

My dad got a boom box, but the Navy sent a color guard. I think he'd have been pleased. He never had much use for musicians. I gave the 1st Class in charge enough to have a kegger for the detail. He'd have liked  that too. No complaints.

45 Re #32: The article I read said that they were using Boy Scout buglers when available. But there just aren't that many civilian buglers. How many people do you know who play the bugle? I don't know of any. Bugles and drums used to be employed for giving commands to ground troops in combat, but they're obsolete for those purposes, and are now only used in a ceremonial manner. So there are few buglers today even in the military.

There is a volunteer organization to provide live buglers for military funerals. I'm a little surprised that with all the salty old salts here (and I am looking at you, "Oook," obviously an expert on kilts and what's under them, fuck you all to hell), nobody knew that. Nothing like a little inter-service rivalry, is there, buttie. Hope you die of it.

I encouraged my 14-year-old Scout troop bugler to volunteer for one, just one, American Legion memorial service, and he is now booked solid through graduation. Not a lot of musician gigs where you only have to know one song.

Sorry to piss you off, Comatus. My dad went from retired double dipper to dead from lung cancer in less than two weeks. We didn't have a lot of time to research buglers. We did, however, shut down a moving service to search all the stored crates to make sure he was buried in his chief's uniform. That seemed like the priority at the time.

My scuba instructor was retired Navy, and one of my classmates had served in the Marines. The banter between the two of them was priceless.

It is my firm belief that ANYONE who serves or served honorably deserves to be honored for their service.
--------------

That is my inclination also, but the truth is, I have encountered active personnel (draftees, during the VN conflict) and vets who hated it, and were marginal (at best) soldiers. I have also known vets who received honorable disability discharges (and lifelong payments) and who laugh at having scammed the system. It is true that they are exceptions, but there are plenty out there who fit that description.

Consider John Kerry. He apparently followed orders, and certainly served 'honorably', but was he a net positive or a net negative?  Veterans for Peace is populated with those people, and I am circumspect as to whether they automatically merit my respect.

The one exception in my playbook is Al Gork who claimed to be a combatant, but was actually a typewriter maven.  The normal tour in VN was one year for Army/Air Force, and 13 months for Marines.

Al was able to leave country in six months and his obligation was considered complete.  Others left early in a box, with mental incapacitation, family emergency with less than 90-days to tour completion, or adjudicated guilty of felony crimes.

Most didn't have an influential Senator as sperm donor.

92 Bull, understood, there are good and bad people everywhere, but I thank them for their service alone, whether they were drafted or joined.

93 could secure a beach against the whole U.S. Navy. Hell, I could hold off half the Navy with just a slingshot and six pissed-off, well-trained oysters on the half shell."

Unless you've trained dolphins to deliver beans and bullets, we'll just outwait you. I hope you remembered to pack in a lot of tobacco to go with those oysters when they get all delicious looking, and stuff.

94 But I do love the back and forth between the branches. ie - weew's #79 Posted by: RWC at April 27, 2013 01:23 PM (Wl/Ht) As a Navy Doc who usually serves on a Marine Base by choice I can sit back and kinda stride both worlds. My Marine cousins usually accept us Navy Docs with benign amusement.

Have you ever seen the photo-op wedding of Al and Tipper? Unbelievable. Al in dress blues, passing under a long arch of crossed sabers, by other soldiers in dress blues. At the National Cathedral, of course. An E-4.

My beloved mother developed vascular dementia and I have been in Texas since November assisting in my mother's care.  She passed on Valentines day at 100 years four months, and I am in the process of settling her estate.

Mom passed peacefully with her family in attendance, and we are grateful for that blessing.  Will return to Florida in 2-3 months.  Thanks for asking.

100 House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers Friday accused Russian intelligence agencies of withholding information on Tamerlan Tsarnaev that could have been helpful to U.S. authorities before the Boston bombings. Rogers also told Fox News that Russia hasn’t been very cooperative in the wake of the bombings either, The Hill reported. “The Russians I think have a lot more information here than they are sharing today,” Rogers said. “They’ve kind of let us peek under the curtain a little bit, but it’s very clear to me that they have valuable information that, A, they should have provided earlier, and B, that we need to get now to understand what happened when he went back to Russia.” Tsarnaev visited Russia for six months in 2012 and U.S. authorities have been trying to sort out details of the trip to determine whether he was influenced by Islamist or Chechen extremists while there. “I think the Russians need to cooperate more than they are now to fully understand those six months. I just don’t think they’re there yet,’ Rogers said. Rogers added that U.S. intelligence agencies had a rough time evaluating information from the Russian authorities because they often plant disinformation to make trouble for political opponents. “Sometimes when working with certain intelligence groups with the Russians, they would give derogatory information about somebody that they politically did not align with, so the FBI had to sort all of that out,” Rogers says. “They had to take this information with a grain of salt. And [the Russians] didn’t give them a lot.”

Well, you know, Pearl Harbor kind of knocked us back for a few months. We did make it there by Sept. 1945. Trivia: Wake was the first combat mission of Bush the Elder.
