House Oversight Committee Staff Report: Contrary to Claims of Democrats and Media (But I Repeat Myself), NO Progressive Groups Received Elevated Scrutiny In Pursuing Their Non-Profit Status
— Ace

The report seems to be saying that while some Progressive groups were given a second look, it was due to specific flags coming up in the course of the normal application process, flags that would have gotten a second look in any situation.

Thus, while Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself again) can point to this progressive group or that one being scrutinized, it's not because progressive groups were generally being given additional scrutiny.

Tea Party groups, on the other hand, got scrutiny just for being Tea Party groups.

I think that's what they're trying to say.

“Only seven applications in the IRS backlog contained the word ‘progressive,’ all of which were then approved by the IRS, while Tea Party groups received unprecedented review and experienced years-long delays. While some liberal-oriented groups were singled out for scrutiny, evidence shows it was due to non-political reasons,” according to the Oversight staff report, which was obtained by The Daily Caller.

“[T]he Administration and congressional Democrats have seized upon the notion that the IRS’s targeting was not just limited to conservative applicants,” the report states. “These Democratic claims are flat-out wrong and have no basis in any thorough examination of the facts[."]

Thanks to @johnekdahl.

And of course it won't make a difference, because no major media outlet will carry it- or it will come after the story about the dalmatian giving birth to a litter of puppies somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico. What would be interesting is the Republicans then called up Eric Holder and asked him pointedly why he wasn't bring up various employees at the IRS on charges- and then hold him in Contempt (including having him thrown in jail- which would be awesome) when he refused to cooperate.

Amazingly enough, it is entirely due to the fact that Eich made a $1,000 donation to the campaign urging a ‘yes’ vote on California’s Proposition 8. When this fact first came to light in 2012, after the Internal Revenue Service leaked a copy of the National Organization for Marriage’s 2008 tax return to a gay-advocacy group, Eich, who was then CTO of Mozilla, published a post on his personal blog stating that his donation was not motivated by any sort of animosity towards gays or lesbians, and challenging those who did not believe this to cite any “incident where I displayed hatred, or ever treated someone less than respectfully because of group affinity or individual identity.”

69 Windows XP is supposed to be dead next week. But the Dutch and British governments have both inked deals with Microsoft to continue to keep it on life support, at least for them—under Microsoft’s Custom Support program.

Those deals may be just a drop in the bucket in comparison to what the US government may have to pay for support of the hundreds of thousands of systems still running Windows XP and other end-of-life software. Despite years of foreknowledge of the end of support for the operating system, there are still a large number of systems running Windows XP within government, including computers on sensitive networks and embedded systems. Many hospitals in the US still use Windows XP on workstations and healthcare devices because software developers have not had their products certified by regulators for use with later versions of Windows.

Hit her with a new barrage of questions about this.

She won't answer, of course. She'll take the Fifth on each one in turn.

This is done not to get the answers which of course won't be forthcoming. It is purely an exercise in optics. To show the public that the "most transparent administration in history" is in reality stonewalling like crazy.

Also, Issa needs to be hit in the back of the head with a heavy object, and Gowdy installed in his place to run the committee. Issa is weak on the law and is a poor manager of the media aspects. Gowdy has a far better handle on both.

Note that Issa gave up on questioning Lerner early on last time round, instead of holding her there for continuous nonresponsive questioning (which again constitute important optics).

And then Issa compounded that error by trying to "silence" the blowhard Elijah Cummings by promptly closing the hearing, which the Democrats' auxiliaries in the media immediately spun as TEH RAYCISS. And Issa issued an abject apology later! The guy is out of his depth.

From the NRO link in the sidebar.

— Kevin D. Williamson is roving correspondent for National Review.

CORRECTION: The original version of this piece contained a factual error: The disclosure of Mr. EichÂ’s Proposition 8 donation was not part of the IRS leak of NOMÂ’s tax records. NOM organized the Proposition 8 campaign, and its records were indeed leaked by the IRS, but Mr. EichÂ’s donation was to Proposition 8 itself rather than to NOM, and therefore was not part of the IRSÂ’s recent campaign of lawlessness and political retribution.

Did you guys see that it was the IRS that outed Eich as a donator to Prop.8?
Posted by: WalrusRex

Nope.  In California, donations to initiatives are public record.  There was a lawsuit by donors to Prop 8 to try and change that, because they were concerned gay activists might us their identities to get them fired or something.

Imagine.

Why does it have to be chained with Eich, who is *actually* chained (metaphorically here) to the way CA handles donation information as opposed to the IRS? I haven't seen anything but random internet posts so far linking Eich and the IRS leak. He appears to have been exposed by CA donation law. The IRS leak is a felony, I just haven't seen anything linking it to Eich. People just freaking chase rumors all day. It's like influenza. Until now, XP has been getting security patches and such- they won't any more after next week. That part (the no patches) won't change (or never has when such Custom Support agreements have been made in the past). The only thing the Custom Support agreement does is says that Microsoft will charge those governments through the nose to make sure there are people who will take their calls when said governments have problems with their XP computers. 2- Because of 1, there's not really any need for anyone to panic. Very few tech support calls are generated on the OS itself anyway. People still have time to move to a newer OS- or (if they choose) enter into a Custom Support agreement with MS.

112 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago. She just couldn't understand why Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) would undermine the efforts of fellow Americans. "Even my Grandpa?" she asked pitifully.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) have rushed to judgment and besmirched the good name of every American, past and present. "And yes honey, even Grandpa", I was forced to say.

I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. I think my daughter could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "Honey, I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..."

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Daddy" she said, "why are the Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) doing this to the country?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

For once she had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it's too much, but seeing the strength in my young daughter's voice helped me to get through.

Discontinuation of security patches for one of the most security-exploit-ridden operating systems in history, which is used in critical national security applications, is "no reason to panic"?

What are users supposed to do when new exploits of the old but still used and now unpatched OS emerge?

I suspect a lot of institutional IT people are now remembering the advice from their older predecessors about how "no one ever got fired for buying IBM".

Big Blue back in the day would keep on fully supporting even incredibly antediluvian systems as long as you were willing to keep writing checks. FFS, they were still supporting OS/2 for a few key clients last I looked.

I thought it was the #1 cause of registered firearms going missing. The government doesn't know who or where to find the unregistered firearms, or so a friend told me.

167 "Can you paste them into a comment so we can see the list without giving them any traffic?" Sure. Salon's hit list: Right-wing food companies These food chains are owned by far right-wingers who've funded conservative super-PACs For all the Oreo Cookies out there – companies that support gay rights, if only because doing so is good for business – there are plenty of food companies that have not come around on progressive social issues. In fact, a number of food companies are owned by far right-wingers who’ve spent significant money opposing gay rights, abortion rights, and other important causes and funding attack ads against left-leaning politicians. AlterNet The companies in question include many popular chain restaurants that you may eat at occasionally, or even all the time. It’s wise to know where your dining dollars are going. To that end, here are five food chains that are helmed by owners who support right-wing politics. 1. Chick-fil-A It won’t be news to many readers that Chick-fil-A’s owner is deeply entrenched in conservative politics and social issues. The chain has been in the news many a time for its owner’s anti-gay attitudes, in particular. The latest Chick-fil-A hubbub has been especially high-profile. Chain president Dan Cathy, who is the son of Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy, said in a recent interview with the Baptist Press that “as an organization we can operate on biblical principles.” Asked about the company’s support of the “traditional family,” Cathy answered, “Well, guilty as charged….We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit….We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.” Though Chick-fil-A’s attitudes were no secret, this was a bold statement. Unsurprisingly, a strong backlash led by gay rights supporters has ensued. (Meanwhile, the anti-gay side has been vocal in its support of the company.) In response to the controversy, the company didn’t apologize, but it did spotlight its employee nondiscrimination policy and said that from now on it will “leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.” ADVERTISEMENT 2. Carl’s Jr. Carl’s Jr. founder Carl Karcher, who died in 2008, had been a supporter of anti-abortion causes for decades. In particular, Karcher was fond of funding the anti-choice group Operation Rescue. He also had a mean anti-gay streak as well. From the AP story that followed his death: He was reviled by abortion rights activists for his contributions to anti-abortion groups and his oft-repeated story about talking a Carl’s Jr. employee out of an abortion. Gay rights groups dubbed his hamburgers “bigot burgers” after Karcher supported a 1978 proposition that would have allowed school boards to fire teachers who were gay or advocated homosexuality. 3. Domino’s Pizza Like Karcher, Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan is an unapologetic supporter of anti-choice groups, including Operation Rescue, Right to Life, Priests for Life, and the Committee to End State-Funded Abortion in Michigan. (Domino’s itself has noted that it does not, as a company, support “either side of the reproductive rights issue.”) Monaghan is a devout Catholic who also founded Ave Maria University. It’s said that he was inspired by a visit to the Vatican in the 1980s to found the Ave Maria List, an anti-choice PAC. 4. White Castle White Castle joins Carl’s Jr. on the list of beloved burger joints with right-wing ties. According to a recent ThinkProgress report about companies that have helped bankroll right-wing attack ads, White Castle has given $25,000 to the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC, a group linked to House Speaker John Boehner that is supporting conservative candidates in the November election. 5. Waffle House Waffle House (or Awful House as I used to call it growing up) is also mentioned in the ThinkProgress report. The breakfast joint has given $100,000 this election cycle to the Karl Rove super PAC American Crossroads. Mother Jones’ Tim Murphy reported on the donation: This is surprising because one doesn’t normally associate Big Waffle with big scary super-PACs, but also not that surprising: CEO Jim Rogers Jr. is a longtime supporter of Republican causes, and the company’s political action committee has given exclusively to Republicans (in considerably more modest quantities). His ties to Romney date back to 2006, when he joined the finance team of Romney’s political action committee, Commonwealth PAC. So there you have it. The next time you go out to eat at one of the above restaurants, know that your burger and waffle dollars might eventually end up funding anti-gay, anti-choice or other conservative causes. Would it be good if the US Govt would get off their lazy rears and update to something modern? Yes. Is it world-endingly bad that they haven't yet? Not really.

210 Those deals may be just a drop in the bucket in comparison to what the US government may have to pay for support of the hundreds of thousands of systems still running Windows XP and other end-of-life software. I'm gobsmacked at the people who haven't made arrangements to move to another OS. XP has been on the EOL wait list for over a decade. I worked at Siemens a couple years ago and they STILL were on XP across the company. It's insane. Get yer vendors on the horn and get updated. This is like the people who use Excel as a database. I still occasionally hear of instances of business critical legacy applications where the original vendor is out of business. There won't be any ports. Where the application won't run in compatibility mode under later Windows releases. Lots of industrial control stuff. (Siemens, no surprise.)

The smarter sort of IT professionals watch that stuff closely. Less competent people don't realize that they have an application lock problem until it smacks them right in the chops.

Fuck the MSM, they will never cover this. I'd just like to see conservatives actually throw this in Juan William's face and everywhere else it has become a meme that Progressive groups were BOLO'd too. Is it too much to ask for the GOP to push back at least in interviews or do we have to continue with, "Well I don't know any facts and what you say may be true about the IRS treating everyone the same but I think maybe (please don't get mad when I say this) the perception is that..."

I've waited tables at various points in my life, and--at the risk of invoking an old Donna Summer song--waiters and waitresses work hard for that money, especially in a low-end place like Waffle House, where customers sometimes view tipping as an alien concept.  Find enough in those tips to pay for a decent dental plan.

As an aside, the GOP should make a concerted effort to appeal to working people.  At the end of the day, that's what really differentiates us from our political opponents: we work hard and we believe in hard work.  We make, they take.  People can get their heads around that easily enough, I think.

330 The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) released a report claiming that CNN got climate science “wrong” in 30 percent of its segments on global warming largely because they allowed actual debate to happen on man-made global warming.

UCS noted that allowing debate on the subject “suggests that established climate science is still widely debated among scientists” and allows global warming skeptics to confuse the public with their dissenting comments.

“The biggest step that CNN could take to increase accuracy is to stop hosting debates about established climate science and instead focus debates on whether and how to respond to climate change through climate policy,” said UCS.

The worst possible scenario is to have this handled by a group of political neophytes like do-gooding scientists who change their minds every 50 years or so.  ItÂ’s now time for them to STFU and let the professional politicians extract the proper quid pro quos and bring all manner of corruption to the process in a manner befitting of the potential financial rewards at stake.

331 "I've been saying here for years that the Republicans last best to hope to survive as a party is to become the Paycheck Party."

Not just pay. Workers' actual TAKE-HOME pay after everything's taken out.

And there needs to be a lot more stress on how much the ordinary necessities of life cost, the things people buy with their pay. And how idiotic liberal policies make those things cost more.

I despair that the GOP establishment will ever get this. They're all too comfortably well off to realize how much traction there is among ordinary workers when it comes to stuff like food and gas prices.

Exhibit A: 2012 Mitt Romney campaign. Not a single ad on that topic. Because to a nominee with a personal net worth of hundreds of millions, things like gas prices are a rounding error.

426 They have generic Ritalin. Yes, they do. But Ritalin is not actually recommended for ADHD anymore. Hasn't been for years. Turns out it's so strong, it was functionally a chemical lobotomy. Kids stopped acting out because they largely stopped acting. The new stuff works differently, and there are lots of options, but since they're all new, none of them are generic.

427 Facts/documented proof that don't fit the narrative don't matter to progs -- they'll just keep screaming that "Progressive groups were targeted too stupid wingnuts" just like they keep screaming about how the "science is settled" re: Golbal warming (or climate change or whatever the eff they're calling it this week), etc. This -- ignoring/dismissing documented proof -- is their forte. They are as adept in that as they are in projection-- because they are either (1) corrupt and thus have no qualms about lying to achieve their ends and/or (2) stupid.

449 OT -I am so ticked off. Just had to tell some Central Americans to leave my mom's driveway (I had soken with them, and they then parked and blocked driveway). Said they were here to cut trees . I said I wanted something in writing. He wrote me a phone number to call of another unknown person with hispanic name. I am so tired of this crap. They said they were here to cut trees for elec co, but they came last year. He showed me GPS coordinates, which did not help since I don't know what they are for this location. THIS is not my country anymore. He couldn't understand me, and I couldn't understand them. I refuse to believe there aren't Americans who could be doing their jobs.

452 454 Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 07, 2014 05:15 PM (XyM/Y) - Thanks. They left. I called the elec co, they will not do anything till I get a letter in 7-10 days. Hopefully, the 3 men will not come back, but if they do, I guess I will call the cops, which I hate to do since I'll probably get the business for not letting the illegals do what they want.
