House Votes Down Pork-Filled Senate Version of Farm Bill

The House version of the farm bill includes cuts (well, "Washington Cuts," at least). The restrictions on the food stamp program are the Administration's chief (stated) objection to the House bill.

The White House is threatening to veto the House version of a massive, five-year farm bill, saying food stamp cuts included in the legislation could leave some Americans hungry.

The House is preparing to consider the bill this week. The legislation would cut $2 billion annually, or around 3 percent, from food stamps and make it harder for some people to qualify for the program. Food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, cost almost $80 billion last year, twice the amount it cost five years ago.

The Senate passed its version of the farm bill last week with only a fifth of the amount of those cuts, or about $400 million a year, with the support of the administration.

But the House bill would cut other boondoggles:

The bill, which costs nearly $100 billion a year, would save a total of about $4 billion annually, including the food stamp cuts. It would eliminate some subsidies while creating others, raising subsidy levels for several crops. It would expand the current crop insurance program and also create a new type of crop insurance that would kick in sooner than the paid insurance farmers have now.

I don't like the "creating other subsidies" part but cheaper is cheaper.

The porkier Senate bill, supported by the White House, was just voted down in the House 195-234.

More: The Hill writes this up as a blow to Boehner, who I guess let it proceed to a vote.

Interestingly -- I didn't guess this when I first put up the story -- a lot of Democrats voted against the bill, because they don't like even the pittance of cuts in the Senate version. The Republican caucus actually split, I would imagine among the typical farm-subsidy-state and non-farm-subsidy-state lines.

My entire food budget (which allows for eating out a few times a month) for 4 people and 2 large dogs is $600 per month. And that's because we splurge on some things. I'm pretty sure we could drop it to $500/mo if we stopped eating out at all and went full cheap-skate on everything we buy.

43 Farm Subsidies bill? But it's not. It's a food stamp bill. In fact, if it didn't have the farm subsidies, it wouldn't have even made it to the floor. The farm subsidies are supposed to seduce Midwestern Republicans. So the program is SNAP (*supplimental* nutrition assistance program) and Democrats are decrying the "cuts" by some challenge to live on the $4.50/day that SNAP provides. First, *supplimental*. This is on top of WIC or, you know, salaries. Second, all of these idiot Dems are buying individual lunches at Whole Foods or brand name packaged foods. Part of the reason for that is that Wal-Mart isn't allowed in the city limits of DC (or NYC, for that matter). I think that little strategy failed miserably.

Farming "support" has been a cash cow for corruption for a while now.  People were talking not too long ago about, iirc, a program for black farmers that was paying out lots of money to people who happened to be black, but had nothing to do with farms or farming.

When a fuss was made about the supposedly non-existant amount of money that people receiving food stamps were supposed to live off of, a Republican staffer made a point to live off of that amount of food (I think it came out to $4.50 a day).  I read about it just the other day, though I don't remember where (hopefully I didn't forget that this place is where I saw it...).

I know a couple who get SNAP.  They use their "black card" to splurge and buy the expensive stuff like Lobsters, steak, crab legs, steamers, etc.  and he uses his disability money to buy the regular groceries when his card runs out.

 

He got on disability because he supposedly has that COPD stuff and he doesn't work but gets state disability.  He still takes side jobs and a couple of times I was very close to turning him in.   I figure Karma will catch up with him one day.

Depends on your expectations, and what you're used to. Sure, if you're used to a middle or upper class lifestyle, it would suck. But if you're used to just hanging around, doing as little as possible, and never expected anything more, then getting paid to do as little as possible is probably wonderful. And to turn it around, many people like that probably view with horror what we take for granted, namely, going to work every weekday, whether we feel like it or not.

 

Also, look at this way: if any of us were suddenly made destitute, we'd move the earth to get back on our feet, yes? And yet the really poor don't bestir themselves to change their situation. Conclusion: it doesn't bother them that much.

 

Last, consider how the truly poor - Somalis or something - would view the situation of our "poor." They'd be thrilled to live like that. Ecstatic.

Depends on how you define "poor."  Compare the cash value of what a 18-year-old "single mother" of two with no HS diploma receives in "benefits" to the wages an 18-year-old HS graduate can expect...even before SS tax and whatnot...and the graduate has to get out of bed every day and put on pants and go do something to get that money.

Every society in human history except ours would recognize "being able to sit around doing nothing all day every day without having to worry about starving to death" as a "life of leisure."  Throughout most of human history, even the wealthy didn't have that kind of luxury.

OTOH, working every day and remaining poor because your wages get siphoned off to feed people who don't work...that's what sucks.

The entire bill should be abolished.  Did you know that the richest people in America are getting welfare payments in the form of 'farm subsidy'?  Jimmy Carter of all people has collected near $1million since 1995.  Tom Vilsack, who I believe is the chairman of the farm whatever is collecting huge yearly welfare payments.  The fricken Rockefellers are getting free money too.  This is wealth redistribution alright.. from us, to the richest Americans.  Just about everyone in Gov't are getting free money, on top of their insane benefits.  Jimmy Carter? ha its obvious why this is tied to food stamps.  Its moral teflon

My SIL was living up in Idaho when she had her first kid.  From what she's said, she almost had to beat the government assistance people off with a bat when she had her first kid.  She didn't need assistance, and she didn't want assistance - though it no doubt would have made things a little easier.  But the government people wouldn't take NO for an answer, and kept trying to get her to sign up.

I don't have cable, I don't even really have a modern computer (we just bought a new one for my wife, but it was pretty bare-bones because her old one was really dead-dead). My cell-phone is a smart phone, but I'm on a no-contract plan (which is way cheaper than a contract). Many of the 'Rons and 'Ettes talk about playing Skyrim and Neverwinter and other modern games- My PC struggles to run Neverwinter Nights 2. Now, most of that is by choice. I could live higher on the hog, but I choose not to because I'm fiscally responsible. I don't like debt, and I'm retiring what I can of it as fast as I can. Now, let's take a "poor" family. That "poor" family probably has all the same things I do. They probably eat at restaurants more often than I do. Their cars, while perhaps no nicer, are probably in about the same category. Now, for me to maintain my lifestyle, I get up at 6 every morning (it was 5 for my last client) and work a (functionally) 10 hour day. That doesn't include chores at home. I normally get to bed around 11 PM. If I'm lucky, I get to bed at 10. One or two things go wrong, and I'm not getting to bed until midnight. For them to maintain their lifestyle, they put their grubby little hands out and say, "F*ck you. Pay me." Who has it better?

In England after the War,   what with food rationing and all,   my    grandmother used to   fry up SPAM at least once a week for dinner.     It was cheap and had protein, and it didn't need to be refrigerated.   My grandparents'     used to    keep their milk cool by      buying it      every day and putting      it in a bowl of cold water at the far end of the hallway, where it was cooler than the rest of the house.

I grew up in rural central Indiana, south of Shelbyville, and went to a small high school literally in the middle of the cornfields, a provincial little school where Agriculture was a required subject. Most of my male classmates chose to become farmers after graduation. Here's the deal: where I went to school, the farm kids were the rich kids, the ones who wore the best clothes and whose daddys bought for them the Trans Am Firebirds and motorcycles and the latest in 4-wheel-drive off-road hotness. I don't write that because I was envious of those kids (although there was probably an element of that in there somewhere) but because this Grapes Of Wrath hardscrabble Man of the Soil stereotype is so much bullshit. It's a business.

Yes, it's an uncertain, unforgiving business and sure, some farmers struggle during bad years, but American farmers happen to be blessed with (overall) good soil and moderate weather, access to the latest in farming technologies, etc. If you can't make it here, you can't make it anywhere. If they can't make it without subsidies, then we've been subsidizing bad practices and poor decision-making.  No more subsidies.

Those dehydrators don't actually get all the moisture out. Real jerky has so little water in it that bacteria can't reproduce. Real jerky will stay good for more than a year at a time. The stuff you make in the dehydrator won't.

Farmers  need  a decently priced crop insurance,  low interest loans for equipment, and that's it.  Give them  the freedom to grow what they wish to grow.  Let the individual states figure out land-use rules, not the fucking fed.  No more subsidies.  Free market food is the best food.

 

Oh, and get the EPA out of farming.

285 Yeah, I'll admit it.  I've voted twice for my Senator who definitely has a soft spot for grangers being one and all.  I work in an industry that supports the grangers but at a cost so when I bring my issues to his attention, there sometimes follows what could be termed a constituent smackdown.  Still, except for this failure, he's a conservative in all other respects.  Since my favorite congressman was redistricted away from us [that madman Steve King and still managed to get re-elected bwahahahaha], the newby is missing in action, Senator Grassley will do just fine.
