— Ace From Instapundit, how to pick the correct length of a nap for best brain rebooting.
Which is entirely useless to most people, who have zero opportunity to nap.
Personally, I cannot nap (even when I'm tired), but I'm interested in learning how. It's an interesting skill. People who nap don't realize it's a useful skill until they meet people like me who can't nap, and who have to remain awake for almost the entire duration of a six hour plane ride.
Anyway, I searched for "How to Nap" and found this from the Boston Globe. Kind of seems obvious. Maybe I'll try it sometime.

I can nap standing up, but usually I'll position a piece of paper under my desk, lean over and snooze. This way it looks like I'm in the middle of something when some bozo marches in unannounced.

Even just laying down for a bit is helpful for me. Close my eyes and work through what I've got on my desk.
Helps me focus on what I need to do/need to get done; away from the distraction of "has Ace put up a new post to entertain me yet?"
The Spaniard siesta was/is ahead of its time--you are supposed to wind down for a bit in the early afternoon.

I can't sleep in a moving vehicle. Plane, car, train, bus -- doesn't matter.
I can nap at home, but my problem is waking up. My internal alarm clock doesn't work unless I have a specific deadlne to meet (like having to get up at a certain hour to catch a flight), and when it comes to alarm clocks themselves, I never hear them. I have literally set my cellphone alarm to the loudest, most obnoxious ringer, stuck it in my pillowcase right below my ear, and slept right through it.

I think when I'm napping I'm not really sleeping. It's like I can hear everything the TV is saying, but I'm not really awake.
It's still strangely refreshing though.

Some studies show sleeping ( 30 min ) may cause sleep inertia, a hangover-like groggy feeling that lasts for up to 30 min after waking, before the nap's restorative benefits becomes apparent.
This is news? This is called "every time MWR wakes up: after a full night's sleep, a nap, a mild head injury..."

That's probably 'cause you all aren't sleeping regular hours.
I don't mean 8 hours every night, I mean 90% of the time the same time of the day you are asleep.

When I'm having trouble falling asleep I hold my arm straight up in the air above me and focus on keeping it there. It blanks out the rest of the stuff running through my brain and knocks me right out.
Doesn't work if I'm fidgety, though.

I believe that's what's known as lucid dreaming. It's a skill I've never mastered, although I wish I could. The past month or so I've been having the WEIRDEST damn dreams. I'd like to be able to look my dream!self in the face and say, "WTF? A schoolbus and blue fish? WTF are you going on about?"

This one will sound weird.. If there is a TV or radio on, try to repeat the words of whoever is talking - immediately.. like you were playing that game where you say everything the other guy is saying. Works like a charm.. Your brain is concentrating on that and filters everything else out and just shuts down..
Never, ever try problem solving when trying to take a nap.. I'm a programmer.. and if I start thinking about a problem I'm working on, it's all over.
Last.. take a walk in nature inside your head.. through a field of flowers.. pine tree forest.. etc.. Try to take in as much detail as you can..

In competition napping, duration, depth and situation are scored with extra points for drooling. If the drool actually makes it from the corner of your mouth to your ear you can even earn bonus points on top of the extra points.
A close examination of the actual colloquial Aramaic used in the bible and as understood by the ancient tribes who spoke it, the actual quote is, "On the seventh day He created napping".

Napping while marching is easier than it sounds when you've been awake for 50+ hours.
Plus, it gives you opportunities to screw with your fellow soldiers. We used to use those tiny little chemlights tucked into the back of our helmets on really dark nights with a new moon. Literally the ONLY thing you can see is the chemlight, so we'd do things like take our helmets off and "walk" 'em off to one side or the other, or "down" like we just went into a hole. The worst is if you find a tree......then you put your hand over the chemlight right in front of the trunk.

There's a way to learn how to do it supposedly. You need LED glasses set on a timer to your estimated REM state. The lights are supposed to elevate your state just enough to get you to notice you are dreaming.
I have lucid dreaming every few months or so. I end up trying to fly around. That's hard to maintain. My brain keeps reminding me I shouldn't be able to do that. So the compromise is that I can 'skate' around on the ground as if I were wearing heelies.

I've had a few occasions where I've been able to flyin dreams by slightly, gently flapping my hands. First I hover and than I can glide around.

Yes, that's the attitude, in a nutshell.
I say loosen up, Tight-Ass Van Winkle. A little shut-eye on a Saturday afternoon is one of my rights as an American.

Only rarely do I get to fly in my dreams. But it almost always is jerky an not very well controlled. But it's still fun!
Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at September 30, 2013 12:19 PM (f9c2L)
I have lucid dreaming every few months or so. I end up trying to fly around. That's hard to maintain. My brain keeps reminding me I shouldn't be able to do that. So the compromise is that I can 'skate' around on the ground as if I were wearing heelies.
Posted by: weft cut-loop at September 30, 2013 04:11 PM (ligos)
I can only do it during the daytime mostly just to decompress not because I'm tired and sleepy. A few times though I could barely force myself out of the dream which was a little unsettling. Those were the David Lynch dreams.

Went for three and a half days without sleep while in the military once. It was hell. It takes all your strength just to hold back emotions. Hallucinations are commonplace and one can't trust what you're really seeing. The speaking and/or understanding of instructions takes exponentially more focus than normal, and even then one wonders if they really heard them at all.
I don't want to ever experience that again.

We used to see some of their TOFCs with the original logos, but they disappeared a long time ago.
Now it's just boring CSXZs.
One of that sad things about consolidation of American railroads is the loss of those cool regional names.

I used to be able to nap for 5 minutes and be fine. 20 minutes was a very long nap. We called them catnaps -- fall asleep and wake up by any sound, any time.
One day I stopped being able to do that. Can't nap anymore, because 2 hours isn't a nap, it's a short sleep. I miss it, though. It was a great refresher. I wonder if it's tied to age?
Posted by: Biblio at September 30, 2013 12:36 PM (7o8VY)
I suspect people who can't nap get the same amount of sympathy from those who can as the sailors who get seasick get from those who don't.

As for dreaming, I know I dream in color. And when I tried melatonin as a sleep aid, I had the oddest dreams, like something in a Ken Russell movie or Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" (though unfortunately there were no visions of Nicole Kidman naked).
