I Drive Your Truck
— andy

Thanks to @DoreenHDickson for sending me the story behind Lee Brice's hit song.

Then came the part of the interview that hit me hardest: It was the moment when Paul Monti talked about his sonÂ’s truck, and why he still has it, and still drives it.

“What can I tell you? It’s him,” Jared’s father explained, nearly choking on his words. “It’s got his DNA all over it. I love driving it because it reminds me of him, though I don’t need the truck to remind me of him. I think about him every hour of every day.”

I was already tearing up before that story about Jared’s truck. But as the details piled up — the truck was a Dodge 4X4 Ram 1500 with decals on it that included the 10th Mountain Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, an American flag, and a Go Army sticker — I lost it.

And there I was sitting in my car in a Walmart parking lot on a sunny Memorial Day in my hometown crying hard. Crying like a child. Crying as if IÂ’d lost my child.

I wasnÂ’t the only one in a car crying that day. It turns out that a Nashville songwriter named Connie Harrington was in her car, too, listening to the very same story. Moved to tears, she pulled over to the side of the road, scribbling notes as the story proceeded.

And here's the result, which I have loved ever since I first heard it.

SSG Jared Monti's MOH citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Staff Sergeant Jared C. Monti distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a team leader with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, in connection with combat operations against an armed enemy in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, on June 21, 2006.

While Staff Sergeant Monti was leading a mission aimed at gathering intelligence and directing fire against the enemy, his 16-man patrol was attacked by as many as 50 enemy fighters. On the verge of being overrun, Staff Sergeant Monti quickly directed his men to set up a defensive position behind a rock formation. He then called for indirect fire support, accurately targeting the rounds upon the enemy who had closed to within 50 meters of his position. While still directing fire, Staff Sergeant Monti personally engaged the enemy with his rifle and a grenade, successfully disrupting an attempt to flank his patrol. Staff Sergeant Monti then realized that one of his Soldiers was lying wounded in the open ground between the advancing enemy and the patrolÂ’s position.

With complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Monti twice attempted to move from behind the cover of the rocks into the face of relentless enemy fire to rescue his fallen comrade. Determined not to leave his Soldier, Staff Sergeant Monti made a third attempt to cross open terrain through intense enemy fire. On this final attempt, he was mortally wounded, sacrificing his own life in an effort to save his fellow Soldier.

Staff Sergeant MontiÂ’s selfless acts of heroism inspired his patrol to fight off the larger enemy force. Staff Sergeant MontiÂ’s immeasurable courage and uncommon valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, and the United States Army.

4 Yeah, I put flowers on my late husband's grave yesterday.  First Infantry Division/101st Airborne Combat Infantry Viet Nam Vet who died in agony from Agent Orange poisoning...it took him over ten years to die, probably closer to fifteen.  He had diabetic peripheral neuropathy without having diabetes--Agent Orange fools the body into thinking it does not have enough insulin, when it does.  ALL of the nerves in his body from his hips downward fired constantly for pain, but, only sporadically for movement.  So as he was losing his life he was also losing his dignity with constant falls.

But, hey, Jane Fonda gets to rock a cut-out dress at Cannes at age 75, so it's all good right?  Yeah, I am bitter and will be bitter until I leave this earth.  I have tried to forgive the protestors and their smug little smiles when they say, "We stopped an unjust war."  But, I can't.  You see, they stopped the war by destroying the men fighting it.  My husband was spit on by cute girls in the Oakland airport and called a babykiller to his face.  A co-worker asked him how it felt to kill women and kids.  Good times.

7 I was in the infantry and I witnessed many times the selfless actions of so many. We toss around the word "hero" too easily. This man was a true hero and gave his last, full measure in defense of us all. On this Memorial Day, please, enjoy yourselves, have a great time but at the end of the day hoist one in remembrance of all of those that gave up everything so you could have this holiday.

13 Given this story, it is only natural that the media's empahsis the last few weeks has been on what sexual predators the military apparently is. Or, more accurately, that they would like it to vewed as such, the PTSD thing not having discredited the military image enough in the public's eye. Can't have a credible, ethical institution outside the firm control of Progressives, oh, no. The people might get ideas. Given the recent attacks on the ability of commanding general's to review court martials, I find it ironic that Democrats are attacking the military for not stringing up military men on sexual hatassment charges in cases where there is less evidence against the accused then that mustered against Bill Clnton. But then, being honorable, to the point of death, as Staff Sergeant Monti was, has never been a Democrat strongpoint.

14 @4 - Sherry, we owe you and your late husband a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid. Jane Fonda and her ilk may be appealing to the camera as she tries to fool herself and those around her, but she will never be anything other than a traitor to her nation. I pray that you can find the strength to forgive those that trespassed against you, such that you can find peace.

22 MISS — The city of Chico is talking about raising all sorts of fees and fines in an effort to plug an enormous hole in its budget.

The council has for years approved spending millions of dollars it didn't have, shifting money around to hide the problem. Now it's out in the open, and citizens will pay dearly if they dare break city laws.

But there's good news out there for nuclear bomb owners. The current fine for a first-time violation of the city's nuclear-free ordinance is $1,064. Under a proposal to revise certain fines, a first-time offense will be reduced to $1,000.

For those of you new to town, this is not a joke.

32 Jeff E, that is uhm 'gung ho!'

Gung ho became inoculated into USMC DNA in WWII when Evan Carlson returned from observing the Chinese guerrillas of Mao-tse-Tung.  Once he returned to the Marine Corps he wanted to create Raider battalions, Marines who were willing to go behind enemy lines or slip ashore on some remote enemy held island and raise hell.  If one of the advocates for the Raiders had not been FDR via his son, the Raiders would probably not have been created.

It was from those Chinese communist fighters and Carlson we now have the term Gung ho.  It is an exhortation to work together to accomplish the tasked mission.  The Raider battalions did not last long, by the time of Okinawa due to casualties and expansion the surviving Raiders were merged back into regular USMC service.  But the term lives on.

By Iwo Jima the Marines had two years of island fighting under their belt.  The casualties to show for it also.  And survivors from those landings had been reassembled with Raiders into new units like the 7th.  And that is what went ashore at Iwo Jima.  And again paid a dreadfully dear price to secure that chunk of volcanic rock.

61 Seriously speaking, weight is a crucially important parameter of any transportation vehicle, be it on land, at sea, or in the air. Excess weight steals payload capacity, at the very least. First thing I'd do, if I were in charge at the Spanish Admiralty, would be to have the builder go over the plans, and re-calculate the weight of every single component, down to the gram, to see if there was a built-in error. And while that is going on, I'd have a team of marine surveyors go over the vessel, as built, with a fine-tooth comb, and measure or calculate the weight of each and every component, in an attempt to determine if a deviation from the design caused the excess weight. Heads should roll over this.

64 AoP.  It seems the Telegraph has under-reported the weight problem.  I even thought maybe they were using long tons, 2,200lbs, but that would only total 82.5 short tons, 2,000lbs.  Other sources are reporting the sub is overweight by over 100 tons.  And the finger pointing that is going on.

82 Wow, the level of disconnect is amazing with you people.

You constantly post videos to showing that you are no different than Muslims, and you don't even realize it.

If an NBC attack happens here in America, we will know it was the Army and will act accordingly.

Seriously, we'll be passing out knives to kids in school and telling them to "get the little Christian bitches".

86 On the evils of paying what is owed, there's that book by one of the anti-globalist activists. David Graeber, "Debt: The First 5,000 Years". To his credit (heh), Graeber lays up front at the start that he's an activist.

His analogy is to a guy going to the bank saying, "I want 500 quid [he's English] to put on Lucky Horsie #4". In an *ethical* situation, the bank would laugh him off the premises. But in the international marketplace, there are plenty of gangsters willing to put up the cash - because they don't *expect* the loser to pay them back. They expect to take over the guy's holdings and to enslave his family.

Yes, this does happen. The Frogs did it to Haiti, and later to Madagascar.

It makes one wonder if the point of the EU was not to improve the economy of Europeans, but for the rich in north Europe to gobble up prime  Mediterranean coastline for pennies.

French Soldier in Paris stabbed in neck, authorities mystified as to why. The suspected attacker, a tall man, of possibly north African descent, and wearing white arab style robes fled the scene, and is still being sought by the authorities.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls noted the similarity in an interview on France 2 TV saying the attacker was clearly trying to murder his victim, but he added that it was too early to offer any theories.

"Let's be prudent for now," Valls said of the attacker's identity and motivations. "Everything is being done to arrest this individual."[i/]
