I Think I'm Ready to Review "Man of Steel" Right Now
— Ace

No I haven't seen it. Just looking at this trailer and not liking anything here.

What really sunk it for me was Superman claiming the "S" on his chest isn't an "S," but rather stands for... well, you'll see.

Below that: I saw this General Zod commercial on a TV show over the weekend.

I don't get that one, either.

Yeah I'ma gonna wait for DVD.

Best Superman ever- George Reeves.   Here's a  little known quote from him at the time of the initial episode of Superman:

28 Ace, I love you man. I really do. But get your head out of you ass. That movie looks *awesome*. And of course that the symbol of the House of El would mean something to them and we might see it different. To me, that makes it all more "Hoo-rah, this is 'Murica. I know you say that means one thing, but to use it means an S. And this is 'Murica, so we're right bitch!" Now go kill a hobo, get a fully belly and you'll realize you are wrong.

75 They need to make a movie staring Zod. A misunderstood youth growing into a their worlds most prestigious general. Faced with a population of pussys who beggar themselves and future generations with quadrillions of welfare spending and "green kryptonian" technologies that end up being useless with the implosion of their sun. General Zod is forced to overthrow the useless politicians and beaurocrats that make any solution to this catastrophe impossible. For fuck sake they wont even let him make a doomsday device because it might pollute a river! And to top it all off a scientist by the name of Jor -El , in English this looks like Al Gore, uses his trillions in savings to send his son to safety and robs the planet of its last means of safety.

Posted by: Mr Pink at April 16, 2013 05:15 PM (frl6N)

76 This is going to be another movie that conservatives should embrace. The previews already tell you it's an anti-socialist movie.  Superman's dad says at one point that if you see let the world know you're special, they'll try and destroy you.

Nolan is already known for pretty right wing movies already. And this will just add to it.

118 I haven't seen the trailers yet, or read Ace's pre-vie, or really paid attention to anything beyond the first trailer where Clark Kent was a swarthy crab fisher or something, so I really know nothing about the problems other people are projecting for this film, but I already know what's wrong with it. I don't need to see Clark Kent grow up to be Superman...again. What I'd like to see is Superman as an established character in his world and show me what he does when he's on the job. Give me flashbacks and hell, if he fights a giant fucking robot, you can throw in a goddamn montage. Sell me that there's an actual challenge to this godlike being that makes having him on earth so important; to him as well as us. But seriously, I'd like to see him rip some giant robots a new asshole. Then we'd see mashups with Supes trashing the transformers. Heh.

119 Thing is, Superman is a man who could be a god but doesn't want to be. Obama on the other hand is a man who could never be god but really thinks he ought to be. Obama is more like Lex Luthor.

Yes, but that was when Margot Kidder playing Lois Lane, not Amy Adams. If it's a sexual conquest that I wouldn't brag about, then a guy who calls himself "Superman" should be downright embarrassed.

@109 The comics went there long ago about it not being an S.I thought it stood for his family on Krypton though, not hope.

-------------------------

Correct.  It's currently stated to be the symbol of the House of El (whose two best known male members are/were Kal-El and Jor-El).  That's been the official interpretation for at least several years.

I'm withholding judgement on the movie itself.  It looks like a large focus is going to be "Clark goes emo", which I'm not too keen on.  But it could surprise me.  Also, while I'm sure that Russell Crowe will do a fine job as Jor-El, Marlon Brando's lines were better.  Probably more the writer's fault than Crowe's fault, but that's the way it is.

125 The trailer doesn't look that bad. I'm not wild about the "Hope" definition but so far this S-man isn't saying, "Truth, justice and all that stuff." grrrrrrrrrrrrrr mac :]

126 Sorry, I just don't get fired up for movies much anymore.  TV or sports for that matter, either.

News of Pat Summerall's passing was not unexpected, but still  stings.  He was the best play-by-play man in the history of broadcasting. He did football, tennis and golf and did them all better than anyone else.  He and Frank Glieber were the voices I'll always remember from watching Cowboys' games growing up.  They don't make announcers like them anymore, and we are much the poorer for that.

Damn how I miss them.  RIP, gentlemen...

130 Can I do this?  Post, I mean.  BTW, I predict box office suckage.  They suck all the fun into a gritty-reality, moral-ambiguity can, put it inside a Lowe's paint can shaker for 90 minutes, and deliver a solid C- movie out of grade-A material.  And the funny part is - America sees it coming a mile away.  And these idiots never learn.

Posted by: D'Lurc at April 16, 2013 07:42 PM (WxOLb)

131 To be fair, the first movie ('79? '78?) did put forth the idea that the "S" was a Kryptonian symbol...

Russel Crowe notwithstanding, the preview actually reeled me into seeing this in the theater.

135 Its amazing to me that they still cant make a good Superman movie. The guy is the first and supposedly "greatest" hero of all, and yet they havnt been able to put out a decent movie about him. Perhaps the first Christopher Reeve movie is as close as they have come, but everything after that has been pure campy nonsense.

Same old crap. Heres superman, heres Lex Luthor, oh look Lex has a trap involving kryptonite, yawn yawn yawn. Zod? Eh. There are so many villains in the DC lineup they could choose from other than Zod or Lex. Yet they still keep cranking out the same rehashed crap.

Maybe Superman movies are OUR kryptonite trap that we keep falling for over and over again...

144 I disagree, I am very much looking forward to this movie. I am in no way a Superman fan when it comes to the comic books but I like Zach Snyder and what he did with Watchmen so I think this should be good. My only question is, how in the world does he find something strong enough to shave his beard?

I don't know, Ace. I didn't see anything in the trailer that indicated the movie would likely suck. Though it might anyway.

I've always greatly disliked the way the franchise not-so-subtly pushes the Superman as Christ theme: Jor-El sending his only son to Earth to become like a God among them and perform miracles, and save them, and teach them to become good.
The original Superman trailer also pushed this Christ-Complex theme.
But I like the original Superman movie nonetheless - best of all the franchise.

I hated HATED Superman Returns.

I saw nothing in the Man of Steel trailer that portends the disastrous failure that was Superman Returns. I just might end up buying a small $36 bucket of popcorn to see this one on the big screen.
