Benghazi Whistleblower: Nearby Rapid-Reaction Troops Were Told to Stand Down
— Ace

Obama and Hillary claimed there was no stand-down order and it was all a right-wing confabulation.

Then the entire leftwing political messaging machine went into overdrive to cover-up for them.

Now, via CBSNews' Sharyl Atkisson, a whistleblower is directly contradicting them and, by implication, branding them liars.

The deputy of slain U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens has told congressional investigators that a team of Special Forces prepared to fly from Tripoli to Benghazi during the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks was forbidden from doing so by U.S. Special Operations Command South Africa.

The account from Gregory Hicks is in stark contrast to assertions from the Obama administration, which insisted that nobody was ever told to stand down and that all available resources were utilized. Hicks gave private testimony to congressional investigators last month in advance of his upcoming appearance at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

According to excerpts released Monday, Hicks told investigators that SOCAFRICA commander Lt. Col. Gibson and his team were on their way to board a C-130 from Tripoli for Benghazi prior to an attack on a second U.S. compound "when [Col. Gibson] got a phone call from SOCAFRICA which said, 'you can't go now, you don't have the authority to go now.' And so they missed the flight ... They were told not to board the flight, so they missed it."

No assistance arrived from the U.S. military outside of Libya during the hours that Americans were under attack or trapped inside compounds by hostile forces armed with rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and AK-47 rifles.

More at Hot Air, including this gem:

The left now has an explanation as to why they screamed so furiously that all was right in the world in Benghazi:

It's conservatives' fault. We tricked them into being so gullible and so fact-deprived. By lodging criticism, we forced them to call all criticism beyond the pale and indeed signs of a worrisome psychological infirmity.

If the three new witnesses donÂ’t get the attention they deserve, Fox News and its ilk deserves much of the blame.

So Fox was correct in pushing the story, but it's their fault that no other media outlet followed up (one major exception: A single reporter at CBS named Sharyl Atkisson), because, Fox, 8rs.

So, what you're saying, if I understand correctly, was that there were assets in place that could have rendered assistance? But didn't. Which means that somewhere, someone specifically ordered that asset to stand down.

if you read testimony there was a C- 130 that the Spec ops guys were forbidden to board to go help them, in TRIPOLI. So its possible there was a Spooky or more likely a Spectre up there agailable to produce a Heavy Rain that would have um... at least taken out the mortar. I have nightmares about those guys calling in the strike and begging the assets to take out the painted target since i have someone very close to me with those guys job description. It could have been my beloved friend on that roof, begging for help.

This.  There are quite a few things this Administration's done that I'm not pleased with.  There are innumerable policy differences and things I think Obama's done poorly.  None of them generate the pure white-hot rage that Benghazi and its aftermath have.

We believe - as an article of faith - that none of us will be left behind.  Hell, when Durant was captured during Gothic Serpent, we had 60s flying all over town, calling his name on their loudspeakers, telling him we were coming.

That belief allows you to throw yourself into the fight completely.  Without it, you'd hesitate.  You'd worry about your family never knowing what happened.  Because 'no man left behind' isn't some fancy saying, but an actual credo, we can fight the way we need to fight to win.  It keeps casualties lower.  Hesitation gets men killed.

Just about every person familiar with security in that region knew that Hillary and Obama were lying and that Rice perpetuated their lies.

In fact I would say the reaction was dumbfounded.

We had military in the region and we had options, many options. What we lacked was leadership to make the calls because they were too engaged in ass-covering and politics. As a result people died.

Here's a question; how long would it take the closest pair of fighters to do a flyover? Answer; not long at all. But nobody made the call.

What is the common, despicable thread (once again)? A media that has their collective head up Obama's and Hillary's asses.

183 That belief allows you to throw yourself into the fight completely. Without it, you'd hesitate. You'd worry about your family never knowing what happened. Because 'no man left behind' isn't some fancy saying, but an actual credo, we can fight the way we need to fight to win. It keeps casualties lower. Hesitation gets men killed. Posted by: Washington Nearsider at May 06, 2013 02:37 PM (fwARV) All of this. My working supposition is that the reason that people are coming out by name on this is due to the utter destruction of the trust necessary between the diplomatic corps and the executive. We ask that people go to dangerous countries and represent their country. People do this based on the belief that if something horrible happens, the full strength and fury of America's military might will come to their aid. Benghazi proved that this is not true. If I worked for State, I would now consider that this administration considers my life forfeit for its own political ends. To put it mildly, that is not good. I also wonder if the reason why people didn't make the comments by name before the election is the supposition that Romney would win and thus the proper balance would be restored. Why risk a career if the concern will be short lived? Both of the above are utter WAGs, of course, but I am stunned not only that people are willing to go on record but how high up the chain those people are.

202 There are still a couple of things I don't understand.  Why the need for the coverup?  Yeah, they made a mistake in not providing adequate security but I think there was probably something else going on that night in particular that made them handle this so poorly.  Something Like Obama/Hillary being too busy with extra-curricular activities of some sort to give a shit.  It would have been too easy either to send help or to just blow it off the next day since the press would faithfully parrot their talking points even if they said the attack were the work of aliens who came to earth to attend a furry convention.

The other thing is how the hell they intimidated so many people into remaining silent.  Yeah, people like their jobs.  So what?  I never had a job I wouldn't shit can in a heartbeat if someone was trying to cover up leaving a bunch of my coworkers to bleed out.  They must have threatened some of these people with criminal or treason charges.

#188 I think it is a little more prosaic than that.  Amb. Hicks was questioned directly under oath by Congressional investigators.  It isn't a good career move to lie to Congressional investigators, especially for a Secretary of State who is now gone and a President who is a ball-less lame duck.  He's a career Foreign Service officer and they generally call 'em as they see 'em.

Anyone else want to argue now that it really didn't matter if the Republicans held on to control of the House?  Or that it wouldn't be even better to have had control of the Senate and two separate hearings at which Amb. Hicks would appear?

I'm actually not surprise, atc.  We all come home.  Under any possible conditions.  The end.  Period.

The trust instilled in us by the chain of command, the government and the people of the United States that we WILL all come home lets us cross one item off of the 'shit to worry about' list.  On the pointy end, everything you don't have to worry about is valuable.

My job (CSAR) only exists because of the will of the American people to bring everyone home.

Shake that trust, and quite a few attached things (moral, combat effectiveness, et al.) take a huge hit.

The people going on-record know that, they believe it, and they'd die for it.  Dinglefuck doesn't and wouldn't.  He simply has to be stopped, even at the cost of their careers.

#207 Come on, it was HIGHLY important for Obama to be able to campaign as the President Who Kept Us Safe, with no attacks by al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden dead.  This attack in Benghazi, ESPECIALLY because it was on 9/11, would have put Obama on the defensive for the rest of the campaign if the truth had been told or reported by the press.

Something else nobody wants to talk about is that there are a TON of Muslims now living and voting in Northern Virginia.  The attack on the YouTube video and the arrest of the filmmaker were a direct appeal to them to vote for Obama.  There was an unprecedented 80% voter turnout in Fairfax County in 2012, and that is where most of the Muslims live.

265 RAMSEY - An "exceptional football player" and "avid musician" who graduated from Ramsey High School in 1993 was killed while on duty in Afghanistan on Saturday, May 4, according to the fallen Marine's brother. Eric Christian, 39, a Special Forces staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, is believed to have been one of the two U.S. troops the International Security Assistance Force said died while on patrol after an Afghan National Army soldier turned his weapon on them in what the military calls a “green on blue” attack. Christian is the son of Robert and Linda Christian. Christian is the second oldest of four boys, including Chris, 40, Phillip, 36, and Mark, 32. Mark also is a Marine who was deployed in 2002 and served two tours. The family learned about Christian's death through Marines who visited his mother’s house in Warwick, N.Y., Phillip said in a phone call from Costa Rica Monday, May 6. Christian will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., and the family plans to hold a memorial service in Ramsey soon thereafter. Dates have yet to be determined. Christian’s remains will arrive in Dover, Dela., on Tuesday, May 7. He was seen off by about 100 Marines in Afghanistan and is being escorted by a fellow Marine on the plane back to the U.S., according to a family member who asked not to be identified. According to the family member, Christian was killed during a patrol in the western province of Afghanistan when an Afghan soldier who was imbedded in his unit turned his weapon on him, another Navy Corpsman and a military dog. Bring the Troops Home: These is absurd. We are not trying to win. Get out NOW

The only  realistically positive thing that can come out of opening this can of worms is that Woods and Doughery will get the posthumous recognition they deserve  as a result of their heroic actions that day.  Active duty or not, SEAL  or CIA, they ran to the sound of the guns, poured it on the enemy  in the face of unbelievable  odds, and saved dozens of American lives.  That is some fucking heroism  about which, in a sane America, people would write songs, name schools,  and christen ships.

But no.  We get gay basketball players.

It's very unlikely they had a designator, nor would they have been illuminating targets with one without coordination with a strike platform. They don't work that way, you pre-arrange a code, etc. They likely had either laser illuminators (markers) or rangefinders that calculated the target's position. The illuminators are essentially high powered, laser pointers dialed into specific frequencies for indicating stuff for voice coordination. The rangefinders calculate a target location for a 9line or CoT message.

Do you engineer your consulates with security as the foremost concern?

Do you reduce security assets after a number of attacks on Western missions and NGOs?

Do you further reduce security assets despite the protest of the consular staff and security personnel?

After reading a declaration of an attack in said country on your assets, do you do nothing in preparation?

After an attack has been launched at your consulate, do you order regional SSTs and other armed forces to stand down?

Do you go to bed knowing that several dozen US officials and staff members are under attack?

I do think, though, that there is a gaping chasm of difference between the ones who felt no fear (Gordon/Shugart/Doherty/Woods) and me.  That's the only point I was trying to make.

Posted by: @PurpAv at May 06, 2013 03:36 PM (/gHaE) No doubt, but my recollection is that only a drone which is capable of linking with a target designator would have prompted the use of one. 419 Just found this at wiki FWIW: *****Just after midnight, an attack on the CIA annex began, which included machine gun, rocket and mortar fire attack. The CIA defenses were able to hold off the attack until the morning of September 12.[18]:45-46 Early in the morning, Libyan government forces met up with a group of Americans (reinforcements from Tripoli including Glen Doherty[64]) that had arrived at the Benghazi airport. The team, which included 2 active duty JSOC operators and five CIA personnel, had commandeered a small jet in Tripoli by paying the pilots $30,000 and forcing them to fly the team to Benghazi.[18]:

Posted by: willow at May 06, 2013 03:41 PM (nqBYe) A Theory that I read was this: Egypt wanted the blind sheik. It was politically unpalatable for Barack to give them the blind sheik. A behind the scenes deal was made to allow the capture of Ambassador Stevens, and then trade him for the blind sheik. Nobody told the CIA operatives about this deal, so when the Morsi operatives came to collect Ambassador Stevens, the CIA guys thought it was for real, and fought back. This pissed off the Morsi Operatives because they thought they had been double crossed, and so they started bringing in reinforcements. I'm not claiming any of this theory, i'm just mentioning that this is the theory I read. I will say that I should not be surprised that the Obama administration might do such a thing.

438 There are still a couple of things I don't understand. Why the need for the coverup? Yeah, they made a mistake in not providing adequate security but I think there was probably something else going on that night in particular that made them handle this so poorly. Obama was looking forward to his golf junket to Las Vegas with boy toy, Reggie--without Mooch and the Spawnettes.

My guess with regards to Hillary is that per usual, she was falling down drunk.  During her last months as SoS, she was determined to swill down all the high dollar wine and booze that came her way.  Her fall that required hospitalization was a "two-fer"--get her dried out a bit before her Congressional testimony and through the DTs and get her concussion treated.  The press desperately reported it as being life threatening, but, that was hogwash since neither Chelsea nor BJ bothered to visit.

We have been fighting the wrong people for a long time now. The politicians are just the tools of the people who steer public opinion. As far as i'm concerned, the people we need to be chopping off at the knees are the people who operate the current News and Entertainment industries. They sow propaganda into all the news and entertainment, and as a result of misinformation, the ignorant public votes for people who enact policies which are killing us. We should be devoting far more effort to cutting their economic throats.

466 Let's get this straight: an ambassador of the United States was captured, tortured, raped, then murdered. We had military men in the vicinity who might have been able to intervene and save his life, yet they were ordered to stand down. The reaction of the Secretary of State is "What difference does it make?"

Instead, the administration cobbles up a who-shot-John story about a YouTube video and hustle the maker into prison.

And why? To help the president avoid criticism. To help him win re-election.

This is so horribly wrong, I don't even know where to begin.

471 If Obama made a call to get an impromptu rapid reaction force there I believe some Marines or SpecOps could have kitted up in armor, grabbed some ammo, a couple canteens and MREs and boarded some helos or Ospreys. D-Day level planning was not necessary. But without a presidential order or a stand down order which would preclude action, only a career-risker would do anything. A few low altitude afterburner F-18s might have done the trick. But, sequester, so nada.

Well, he basically said his call screeners said the guy was one of two people manning the drone above the embassy that night.  He said he was the camera guy and the other guy was the pilot.  But everyone in the car began whining about "come on do you believe this guy would call hannity and not congress" and so I missed a lot of it which is why I asked if anyone else heard it.

The thing that freaked me out is that no one, no one has asked to talk to the guy.

475 But everyone in the car began whining about "come on do you believe this guy would call hannity and not congress" and so I missed a lot of it which is why I asked if anyone else heard it.The thing that freaked me out is that no one, no one has asked to talk to the guy.I hope hannity revisits this.

calling in from a pay phone not a cell or using a computer to get the story out might be the safest way, actually.  Its not a safe thing to do, but if done from a pay phone not in your home vicinity it might be *harder* to prove who it was. you know pay phone were good for stuff like this. Cell phones, are not so much.

477 stuck in car, heard Hannity. A guy claiming to be one of the two drone operators the night of the attack on Benghazi called in. He said by the time theygot the order to look at the consulate it was in flames.

He was then directed to look at the CIA annex and watch who was going in or out (arms anyone?). He said they were not armed, that the SOFA (status of forces agreement) would not allow them to be armed. He said anyone seeing the tape would know immediately is was an organized coordinated terrorist attack. He believed the tapes must still exist, and he has never been interviewed by anyone.

Hannity did not do the greatest job interviewing him. He seemed to think Wood and Doherty were on the roof of the embassy, not the annex and failed to ask about what he did see at the annex

478 Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice both lied like rugs and deliberately facilitated the escape of the terrorists for political convenience. They are accessories after the fact to the murders of Ambassador Steven et al.

480 Who knows if the guy is legit.  Look at how everyone in my car reacted, they didn't believe the guy was authentic.  Later others told me they didn't believe the guy was authentic.  Why is this?  Cause they all think the guy should have gone to congress if he was legit.  This is a fascinating listen though.

481 oh but yesterday there absolutely no one that could have gotten there in time.

There were drones? Airborne? In the vicinty? Oh, but they weren't those deadly drones from PockEEEstoned were they?

Anybody know what SIZE "force" a LtCol commands as a team in SOCOM?

Anybody have any idea at all HOW MANY gunships accompany a C-130 on landing?

But, there just wasn't any military response available. no siree bob.

I'm going to speak ill of the dead now: That Ambassador was probably neck deep in whatever he was doing for obowmao. He was probably almost as guilty as the bastard that 'let' a drone land safely in iran. BUT! He should not have been forcibly removed from USA property by armed gunmen. He should not have been mutilated and murdered. L'il barry and hillary have a sea of blood on their hands.

First time posting here:

I've often wondered why the Whitehouse was so quick to acknowledge that the President went to bed while the attack was ongoing. This was a terrible political risk. Of course, the media did not have much interest in pursuing this angle, but that is another topic.

But maybe, just maybe, the President did not sleep through the attack.

Maybe the order to stand down came from the President.

Something to think about...

483 Strange, we could bomb Libya under Reagan and the only country to piss in our Corn Flakes was France . Red line in Syria already being walked back . Guess what folks , progressives won't enlist , they won't fight unless it's on a message board or a court room . As Biden would say " Gird your Loins. " Thank Candy Crowley for giving America four more years of this Global train wreck . To quote Thomas Sowell " In the last thirty years we have replaced what works with what sounds good/fair ." TO HELL WITH AN AC130 I'll TAKE A CELL OF B-52 G 's WITH FULL BOMB RACKS AND WATCH THE RUBBLE BOUNCE WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO KILL OUR embassy staff AGAIN . AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT ABOUT COLLATERAL DAMAGE NOT THAT MANY CIVILIANS NEAR A RPG FIREFIGHT .

484 181 I still think there were no military resources available.

Think harder.

486 yeah stay classy guys, i'm not a prude in any sort of fashion but that's some pretty nasty stuff you guys are spewing

Posted by: Rick Perry/Geller/ace at May 06, 2013 03:15 PM (nuijB)

'Stay classy'? That's rich coming from someone who likened Ace--and by extension all of us--to David Irving sympathizers. And yes, you're a supercilious little prude, as well as a lot of other not very nice things. I'm glad we made you uncomfortable. I hope to do it again whenever I encounter you as you hop from site to site defending Pam's honor, dreaming of the day she will reward you for your tireless efforts on her behalf.

Before I knew much about Ron Paul, I knew his fanboy followers from online encounters. They were/are, almost without exception, obnoxious, fanatical, condescending, paranoid, prickly and pathetic. This negative initial impression shaped my perceptions of Paul since followers tend to reflect the qualities of their leaders. Same thing here. Geller evidently encourages this kind of weird adoration. That's not a good thing.
