ICYMI: Auburn Shocks Alabama With 0:00 on the Clock
— Ace

All football watchers have seen this six thousand times by now, but maybe some non-football watchers haven't. And it's the kind of play where even non-football watchers will enjoy some football.

The game was tied at 28-28 with a single second on the clock. Alabama attempted a would-be game-winning field goal.

If you don't know the rules of football, it's important to know that a failed field goal kick which remains on the field of play is a live ball, and can be advanced like a fumble or interception.

[Update JohnE.] To add some context: It helps to understand that this game is also one of the biggest rivalry games in the country (if not #1) and Alabama was undefeated, was the #1 ranked team in the country and cruising towards yet another National Championship. The last 4 BCS Champions look like this:

2009: Alabama
2010: Auburn
2011: Alabama
2012: Alabama

So, y'know.... sort of a big game anyway. Auburn is now ranked #3 and has an outside shot at the National Championship Game.

[Update Andy] Even moar context:

First, Bama's starting placekicker had failed to connect on 3 FG attempts in the game, all from 40-some-odd yards (missed 2, had 1 blocked). This kicker was their second attempt at one ... a freshman backup with only two previous attempts all season.

Second, time had expired in this game and it was going to overtime, then a review ... after some urging by Bama ... put one second on the clock after replay showed that a runner got his foot down out of bounds with fractions of a second to spare.

Given the ineptness in the kicking game to this point and the fact that they didn't seem to really be pushing to hard to score at the end of regulation, I expected Bama to just heave it once for the end zone and then take it to overtime.

But they didn't. And the rest is history.

Oh, and since I'm posting stuff you've already seen: Did you hear? There was some sort of airship mishap in Lakehurst, NJ.

So are we saying that the threepeat did a Hindenburg?  Or did Saban?  Maybe this will make the Bama folks calm down, and maybe quit buying houndstooth check clothing and cars (and maybe houses).  Sheesh!

24 21 Btw, several years ago the SEC instituted a rule against rushing the field. Hahahahahaha. --- I think the rule is there for league fundraising as much as anything else, as the school gets fined whenever the fans rush the field. LSU posts armed cops on the edge of the field at the end of certain games to discourage this kind of shit, but Ole Miss didn't bother with it when I went to the LSU-Ole Miss game in Oxford back in October. That whole experience has solidified every story I've ever heard about Ole Miss fans being douchebags.

35 Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at December 02, 2013 05:43 PM (/Crba) One of the funniest things I've ever seen at a football game. Honestly, I don't even remember what game, but a large group of fans rushed the field at the end. No one stopped them, but there were cops standing at the back of each end zone. A group of fans, a hundred plus, suddenly got the idea to tear down the goalposts. They go running towards one end zone. About the time they hit the 25 yd line, the cops stepped forward as a single unit and snapped open batons. Crowd literally skids to a stop. Turns and heads for the other end zone. Same thing. They hit the 25 yd line, step, snap, crow skids to a halt.

104 A re-post from the thread below that I thought was pretty amusing.

Too bad they both can't lose.

[Bob] Dylan is being sued by something called “the Council of Croats in France” for the following act of hate speech:

If you got a slave master or [Klu Klux] Klan in your blood, blacks
can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense
Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood.

If that unexceptional observation is now a crime in France, then France is no longer a free country.

He threatened to sue us for unpaid wages. He was a salaried employee, but that actually doesn't necessarily exempt him from OT and the like. We had his work computer searched by an expert. Hey look, porn (of the straight and gay variety) and setting up of dates via craigslist (of the straight and gay variety). I wonder if your wife and church know of this?? He got ass handed to him by the judge on the noncompete. Two years. Nothing in the 5 counties we do most of our business in. Nothing anywhere with a list of our "base customers". We were to submit a list of said customers. We went for broke, cause why not, and submitted a list of like 80 companies. Judge went "Ok" and signed it. That was almost exactly two years ago. Today my dad and I both got anonymous letters in the mail. A list of jobs that he is doing, or has done, that violates the shit out of the judge's order. He's pissed someone off. He he he.

169 If you haven't heard the radio sportscaster audio of this - look it up on youtube! Also, search youtube for fan reaction videos. Some are pretty hilarious. My wife and I were driving back from Bend (it's a small town in the middle of Oregon where my family lives), listening to this on the radio (the broadcast with the Auburn announcers). With a tiny bit of radio static and the announcer totally losing it - neither of us were sure what happened or even what team had the ball until we could make out "AUBURN IS GOING TO WIN THE FOOTBALL GAME"... As a Oregon grad and Duck fan - this play will be the equivalent of "The Pick" for Auburn for the rest of history and probably lead off their 'get fired up video' before every game ever. So ridiculous and awesome at the same time. I think the best part was Nick Saban just throwing up his arms with the biggest Serious, You Guys, WTF. LOL.
