— JohnE. Pure Coincidence.
From Obama's own website which shockingly, actually works:
This holiday season, millions of Americans have a chance to get quality, affordable health insurance—many for the first time. If you have family members who are uninsured, you can play a big part in helping them find coverage that works for them. It might not always seem like it, but your family listens to you. So have the talk. He's actually encouraging people to print up these lying points and to, I don't know, recite them at Thanksgiving dinner? This sort of flies in the face of his reassuring back-patting and confidence in you being your family's healthcare policy expert if you have to rely on pathetic propaganda you printed up. It's got pretty colors and paint-by-number instructions, so maybe this shit will fly over at the kids' table, but I wouldn't be so quick to try this in front of adults. Hungry and varying degrees of intoxicated adults who just want to watch football and be left alone.
If you can't catch the Chris Hayes "how to talk to conservatives about Obamacare at Thanksgiving dinner" special, don't worry, the same thing has already been printed in a number of newspapers and magazines across the country. From WaPo: A guide to surviving Obamacare debates at Thanksgiving
That's the part of the health-care law that isn't working. But in some states that built their own insurance marketplaces, Obamacare is working--and the health law is meeting enrollment projections. California, for example, has signed up 80,000 people for coverage and Washington has enrolled nearly 12,000. These examples are limited, but the suggest that the problem isn't with demand but a technical one. We won't know whether this is true everywhere, though, until HealthCare.gov is fixed.Yeah, go with that.
Next up, Huffington Post, who is not even trying to hide what side of this debate they're on: Here's Every Argument You'll Need To Win Your Obamacare Debate This Thanksgiving
We've all got a crazy uncle we love. He might not even technically be an uncle -- it's not something the family likes to get into -- but he's there at Thanksgiving every year just the same, getting heavy handed with the 1.5-liter wine bottle, insisting on calling the dog "bitch," starting with off-color jokes that made people uncomfortable even before the country "evolved" and finishing with a tea party-inspired screed about the Kenyan in the White House. We'll call him Uncle Hank.Your plan sucks Uncle Hank, you dumb slack-jawed hick. Get over it.
...
Those plans were terrible anyway -- high deductibles, no hospital coverage, dropped you if you got sick, etc. It wasn't insurance if you actually needed it. Cite an example from a family member here who's gotten screwed by an insurer. Shouldn't be hard to find.
Slate jumps in as well. They're not content with just bringing up Obamacare, they actually want you to fight about it: How To Pick a Fight With Your Relatives This Thanksgiving
2) Getting Started. First off, you should wait until everyone's seated at the table before you try to get things started. That way you have a captive audience that has to watch the fireworks, and everyone is settled in for a nice long time. Getting the topic of conversation to politics shouldn't be too hard. Stick to short, sarcastic, tendentious remarks to get things going. "I'm thankful for all that free stuff Obama gave me." Once you've engaged the enemy, it won't take much effort to pivot to whatever particular subject you feel most comfortable with. A good Thanksgiving skirmish will scamper from topic to topic wildly and without warning, but it's best to begin by digging into one particularly contentious subject to get tempers flared."Get in their faces". I remember someone saying that once.
There are others out there, even in local papers like the Denver Post and the Pittsburgh Courier. I'm sure there will be more before Thursday. But what if you don't feel like talking about Obamacare, what with the steady, embarrassing and collapsing failure and all? Well don't you worry one bit, because there are other liberal causes you can awkwardly bring up as well! Michael Bloomberg wants you to start talking about gun control, for instance.
Lovely people, aren't they? And of course, all coincidental.

OTOH, during the Christmas season, they is no quicker way to shut up an obnoxious pushy salesperson who chirps up, "That would be a perfect present!" than to look at them and say, "Don't need presents. Everyone is dead."

I told the hubby last night that under this Atrocity Care Act, children can stay under their parents' health insurance until age 26.
His jaw dropped. He has been working since age 16, and at 22 he begun his long-time career, the day after graduation. Everything he has, he has earned. He never dared to mooch off his parents in any way. He was not a happy camper after he heard that.
He's not the "Crazy Uncle" in the family - he's an only child, and he/we have only one niece, who loves us dearly. Her mother works at a major, world-class cancer research center: she is totally pissed off because of Obamacare. She knows what that is going to do to the vast majority of cancer patients - and to her own health as well.
So, at least I know quite a few people in my family don't buy anything these snake oil salesmen in the MSM are selling.

One benefit of no longer spending Thanksgiving with my aunt (RIP) is that I won't be seeing my uber-Lefty cousin. He's become rabidly Left over the years, and he's exactly what you would expect: never married, just turned 50, gotten a couple of degrees but has primarily lived off his own trust fund plus the trust fund of his deceased brother. Like so much else for years, the humor is no longer enough for me on this and other topics. My disgust and alienation are just too strong. I'm the public policy geek in the family - the rest are standard-issue Coastal Clueless types who are competent enough in their own spheres but utterly products of CBS News and NPR in their worldly "views". That is, increasingly out of touch not just with reality but history, common sense, and American values and sensibilities.
Don't know if the sister-in-law's extended family there will have been hit like I have (typical, already-a-bit-pricey bare-bones catastrophic plan cancelled, replaced by worse plan at TRIPLE the cost). I will be uninsured next year for the first time in my life - simply not going to bleed my financial situation further because of the idiotic fascistic dementia gripping the nation. I'm assuming most of the others there will be in the favored categories (public employees/retirees, group plans not yet affected, etc.).
Naturally I have been completely silent on anything relating to "politics" for decades - even deflect, smile/joke, change subject when one of the relatives says something particularly idiotic. Now, I wonder. The wife will not enjoy me delivering a 50 Megaton lecture/smackdown, so as usual decorum and being vastly smarter and classier than the others will tightly constrain me.
But if my (really nice and not generally speaking stupid, but a nightmare of clueless moral narcissistic authoritarianism) sister tries one of her prayers where we pray "for our country to do the right thing" (WTF?), like she did two months ago at a small extended family get-together, I'm not sure I can contain myself any longer.
I'm morbidly curious, though, about the sister's husband's situation, with a small family business he inherited. Things have got to be hitting or impending with him. But these are die-hard, very activist Catholics - who vote, exclusively and fiercely, for extreme abortion freaks and those seeking to shred the Constitution and impose morally objectionable requirements on institutions like the Church. Oh, and the sister hates teacher's unions - who basically run the state (CA), along with the few other public master, er, public servants' "unions".

Since I'm up to my eyeballs in this shit, I'll give you my best bet at explaining it:
They confuse "freedom" with "freedom from responsibility" (and a bit of "no restrictive laws on anything) and "charity" with "government coercion."
So you get this wacky "well women have to be free!" (in both a lack of laws and a lack of responsibility) and "we must give the to poor" (in the form of "tax the shit out of everything."

I just want everyone to realize that it is over too soon--people die on you and so you should spend the precious time that you have with them fighting about politics. Fight about football or whether sweet potatoes should have marshmallows on them--important stuff.

Really? Deliberately sow discontent at the Thanksgiving Table? Only one of two times a year a family normally gathers to the same table, and you want to deliberately ruin it by giving instructions to your drones to act like douches? I've worked really hard not to be too commending of my ideological opposition as I've always feared the costs of intolerance dehumanization. But one who would deliberately ruin family get-togethers for spite or entertainment purposes doesn't deserve the notion that they should be treated as a human being. You really don't deserve to live on the same planet as the rest of us.
I secretly suspect the intent IS to deliberately get your young and foolish drones to deliberately ostracize themselves from their families so militant progressivism is all they have left.
End result. The one safe haven. The feasting table: where one puts aside ideological differences in the name of comity is perhaps the last causality to the war of extreme ideology. Wherein EVEN IN THIS VENUE, you must be selective and associate only with the like minded, because progressivism is determined to make that atmosphere toxic too. Not content to shit, where they sleep, where they work, and where they hang out. They need to shit where they eat too, just to make sure all is swimming in their feces, unable to find reprieve from the never ending onslaught of progressive bile and waste.

Fenelon Spoke, I know what you're saying. Knowing the full situation - what classic and disastrous ignorant moral narcissists my sister and her husband are - is key here. The prayer could not have been offered in the unobjectionable spirit you well describe.
And I don't say that just because I have an extremely, extremely fine hair-trigger of intolerance for ignorant folks (take for example FLOTUS) who slander their country and even people in their own presence by even implying that the US in the modern period has not been the greatest force for good on the planet. With really no peer or even comparable country or group to name.
These ignorant, unworldly do-gooders have not the slightest idea that American money, American political will, American military competence and honor, and Americans (like even the relatives standing before them) make the greatest contributions to protecting and preserving life and dignity of any people on Earth. These are the types who have ingested the de rigeur mythology that "everybody hates us", NPR-stupid dopes who are so clueless they think that genocidal, racist, authoritarian regimes (the kind the US opposes and whose damage we help repair) are just "other countries" deserving fair play, etc.
Nevergiveup said above he's not looking forward to T-giving. I actually "sicked out" last year - was still in shock and rage and despair over the election. Would do it again this year but the wife's here now so cannot get away with it. That is, I know dread almost any family event - and this among siblings who are lucky to have had a nearly perfect childhood and really have no problems between them. I'm the only one with the problem, but I'm the only one who has a worldview and experience beyond what we all had when we were 20.
My great misfortune is having friends and family who, almost exclusively, epitomize the clueless, disastrous class of "educated" Americans who have been slowly destroying the country by slavishly following along with a Dem Party that long ago flew off the rails of sensible, American, or constitutional policy. They have no more ability to understand it if I were to actually give them substantive explanations than a hamster would.

The broad conceptual "idea" of POI was outstanding and full of promise. Most of the cross episode story arc premises have been a huge disappointment due to their improbability and caricature standard villain schticks.
When they stick to stand alone stories, they do better. Its watchable, but only half as good as it could have been with better writers. The machine is just a cheap writing prop to the writers rather than an active plot device to be built around. The Zoe Morgan character is VASTLY underutilized.

I'm LOVING this push to get Obamaniacs to raise the Obamacare issue over T-day.
I read the talking points from the Huffington Post and OFA, and they are lame.
Plus, unlike other political issues, this is one where there is likely one family member who has been adversely affected by Obamacare and is mad as a wet hen about it, and just looking to unload on someone.
I suspect there will be a number of people who are getting burnt if they rely on these talking points. Of that number, a subset will be less eager to trumpet the party line, or perhaps even start to have their own doubts.

Oh - and on that one particularly idiotic talking point - "the millions" now able to get "quality affordable" insurance - that's the whole key right there.
So perhaps - very very big perhaps - 10 million people will get some insurance who didn't have any. Doubtful, since there are many reasons people do/don't conform to social norms, only some of them relating to things policy can affect. Say it's 10 million - vs. how many who will opt out entirely? At what cost? What's the cost of simply writing a check so 10 million people are covered by something, vs. turning the entire fucking universe upside-down?
In order to meet nutritional gaps, in order to increase "food security", did the US take over all the grocery chains and restaurants, and regulate what they could sell, and build in massive cost-shifting charges, and in effect radically ration food supply? Uh, no. We created a food stamp program.
If anyone is debating someone with enough neurons firing to even get it, try that metaphor. See if these people can actually think. Ask them why health care insurance "reform" doesn't limit itself to simply writing checks. See if they can manage an answer. (we're leaving out of course that the existing system is massively over-priced primarily due to state-level interference leading to cartelization and cost-shifting/subsidies, and the federal tax code)

What I will tell the young winsome whelp is that:
1) We are going to beat you like a drum in November 2014.
2) It will be worse than 2010, when we took every race from Governor to dog catcher, and,
3) Your mom is going to drop you from her plan because you are a too-expensive penalty.

Again, this is a guy whose wife wrote about how much of an asshole this guy is at family get-togethers. Specifically, regarding Israel. Which, by sheer coincidence, he mentions in the post!
How about that.

All this sounds quite satirical. And, like so much strong satire, it is hard to tell where the sendup ends and the exposé starts. But, if Cook’s past conduct is indicative of future behavior, there may be a grain of truth to his humorous advice.
In 2011, CookÂ’s wife, Allison Benedikt, wrote a lengthy post about his embarrassingly aggressive behavior around family members.
“We get in huge fights on the same topic over and over again and have terribly awkward dinners where John insists on bringing up Israel and pissing off my Mom,” Benedikt confessed. “I act as moderator and it is the worst. John buys every book about Israel that’s ever been published, and then reads them all so he can win any argument with my family.”
Later, during a trip to Israel to visit his sister-in-law, Benedikt reveals how Cook took the opportunity to berate her for life choices he regarded as ill-advised.
“Once in Tel Aviv, John confronts my sister and her husband on their ‘morally bankrupt decision’ to live in Israel,” she revealed. “I spend the whole week trying to explain him to her and her to him, even though they mostly agree.” She later confessed that they stopped talking about anything political in order to maintain the façade of comity. “I miss her,” Benedikt added.
So yeah.... obviously sarcasm. Or maybe not, since he is an insufferable asshole who is advising the very behavior he frequently engages in with family members. Your call.

"1) Select Your Target. Obviously, you need to find someone who disagrees with you politically. But not just anyone: Close relatives present perilous risks. Your parents or siblings can drag all sorts of emotional baggage into the fight, muddying the waters and making it more about how your veganism ruined that family vacation to Yellowstone in 1999 than whether "job-killer" is a racist code word. It's safest to go with relatives you only see once or twice a year. Your angry drunk uncle, if he's game. Or that weird cousin who joined the Civil Air Patrol when you were in college."
And so on.
