If You Like Movies...
— Maetenloch

You're in luck this weekend since Hulu is offering the Criterion series of classic movies for free.

Pretty much any of their movies are worth watching but if you're unsure of where to start I'd recommend one the following:

The Seven Samurai - 3 hours long but a classic. There's a reason this movie has inspired and been copied by so many other directors.

Solaris - A classic sci-fi movie about a scientist sent to a space station where the crew has been slowly going insane. Still better than the 2002 Clooney/Soderbergh remake.

La Jetée - A time travelling tale about a slave from the future that the movie 12 Monkeys was based on.

The Hidden Fortress - A Japanese movie about a fleeing princess and general, hidden gold, and two bumbling peasants that was a direct inspiration for George Lucas' Star Wars. It's enjoyable in its own right but even better as you recognize all the parts that later appeared in Star Wars.

8 The Zatoichi movies aren't bad, either. 'M' is a real good one, so are most of the Kurosawas. Equinox is probably the best thing you'll ever get to watch with a young Frank "Herb Tarlek' Bonner. The Blob and First Man into Space? Really? And that looks like a '65 Barracuda on the cover of 'The Cars that Ate Paris.'

31 Solaris has been available for quite a while over on MosFilm's YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/mosfilm, in Russian with English subtitles. It is, however, called Солярис over there.

I'm not a fan of how MosFilm's been organizing stuff, though. Seems like everytime I go over there, they've reworked their page and made things harder to find.

I'll hand it to the French; they don't pull any punches in depicting their society/ criminal justice system/politics as totally corrupt and the Muzzies look like the scum they really are. And lots of good simulate sex, flesh and hot chicks including my future ex-wife Audrey Fleurot. She is an amazing redheaded bombshell. Good actress too.

34 Chris Marker died on his 91st birthday this year. I saw La Jetee right before then at BAM, and it's a very profound movie, much better than 12 Monkeys.

Yes, the Soderbegh/Hollywood version of Solaris was much worse than the Tarkovsky/Soviet version, which in turn was far worse than original novel by Stanislaw Lem.  And it's possible to finish reading the novel in less time than it takes to watch the Tarkovsky version, where, as I recall, it takes over an hour for the main character to arrive at the space station although in the book that happens in the first chapter.  The Soderbegh version was based on the Tarkovsky version rather than on the novel, and it stripped out even more elements from the story, leaving little more than a romance flick.

81 Netflix Jiro Dreams of Sushi was surprisingly good documentary. 'A Matter of Taste' tracks a young chef, Paul Liebrandt, that is 1) interesting and 2) well done. I rewatched 'Day of the Jackal' -- the real one where you root for the assassin. Simply terrific.

109 Among the Hulu Criterion stuff, I would unreservedly recommend A Woman Under The Influence (or any of the other Cassavetes films,) The Blob, Naked City, Things to Come, The Match Factory Girl, M, The Passion of Joan of Arc, La Strada, The Wages of Fear, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, Mouchette. M is a must-see. The Passion of Joan of Arc is probably the best silent film I've seen, and I've seen dozens. It has amazing casting and closeups. On the DVD, you can see the before-and-after restoration sample clips; the restorers were miracle workers. I despise Godard, but Hulu has Breathless, which is Godard's best IMHO.

I bought the crazy expensive one Lynch put out himself, because I know how much money he blew making the digital version look good, so I was like, "Thanks dude, here's too much money." The Seven Samurai is actually a really good movie, but it starts a little slow, and there are some other slow moments in it,  but if you've seen The Magnificent Severn  (which is also a great movie) you'll appreciate The Seven Samurai, as The Magnificent Seven was lifted from that.

 

If you've never seen "Ran", you should see that also.  It also starts slow, but has a great sequence of bloody action sequences, where lots of people get killed and blowed up.  The ending in particular is very graphic, without giving away a spoiler.  The Japanese love graphic violence in movies almost as much as Americans do.

He said, "If you indeed want to be a filmmaker, you need to see these movies." Both were amazingly influential upon me, and are among the reasons I never gave up when things inevitably became difficult. I told myself that if I could tell stories like that, I'd consider myself wildly successful. Needless to say, I haven't yet reached that goal, and hopefully, I never will. McQueen raced motorcycles, and complained about the "stunt man" who was doing the stunts, and then did a much better job himself.

 

McQueen could be a real asshole and prima donna at times (according to one of his best friends, Jim Garner), but he was a real man.

However, as slow and pointless as I thought Solaris was, I took it in stride because I'd seen "Stalker" by the same director earlier, and I could keep telling myself "yeah, this is terrible, but it's still better than Stalker." Seriously, that movie is two-and-a-half hours of people walking around the woods and abandoned buildings. I cannot figure out how it ever got popular.

(Spielberg's splash of pink in Schindler's List is almost certainly stolen from this movie.) "Stray Dog" - Kurosawa's other police picture, Toshiro Mifune plays a young detective who has his gun stolen by a pickpocket and hunts him down as the pickpocket goes on a crime spree. "Rashomon" - the famous 'one story told from multiple perspectives' movie. Good if a little arty. As others have mentioned, "Yojimbo" and "Ran" are both excellent. Kurosawa also did an adaptation of Macbeth, "Throne of Blood" that is definitely worth watching.

Cary Grant played the sub skipper, LCDR Matt Sherman. There was a TV show back in the seventies that I remember watching, though I don't remember much. John Astin's Wikipedia page uses the publicity photo of him as Sherman, vice being Gomez. Kind of an unusual choice. I always feel an affinity for the name Sherman. Had the chance to meet William T.'s great-grandson (or some such direct descent) in primary when he was a flight school instructor. The family is still short.

"Liberal" until the second half of the 20th century in the U.S. included "free market" and "limited government" in its meaning.  It did not refer to what it does now, which is "leftwing."  It continued to refer to "free market" and "limited government" for a longer period of time in Europe.  Hence, the distinction between the modern definition of "liberal" and the old definition "classical liberal."  This wouldn't be complicated for you to understand if you had ever actually read Locke, because you would know that his work in no way embodied the modern definition of "liberal," i.e., leftwing.

The root of "leftwing," modern liberalism, can be located in a number of places, but owes much more to Rousseau and, subsequently, the French Revolution.

Likewise, most conservative also trace their ideology back to Adam Smith.  They consider him equally if not more important that Burke.  Libertarians, classical liberals like Hayek, also trace their roots to him.

Now, none of this would be necessary if you'd ever bothered to have read a single author I just cited.  You know and I know you haven't.  Do I have to give you history lessons on anything else?  Feel free to ask.  I'm bored.

Rififi - one of the most original heist/film noirs when released, still a 4* effort and the 20-minute heist scene has been much duplicated but never improved on. Even though it's French you'll love it.

Now that the special effects are possible, maybe someone will make a real Roadside Picnic movie rather than Tarkovsky's barely-recognizable Stalker.  Solaris, despite its faults and being far inferior to Lem's novel, isn't a bad movie, but Stalker has almost nothing to recommend it and dropped almost everything from the novel (by the Strugatsky brothers, Arkady and Boris).

317 "Sweet Smell of Success" is a must-see. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis in the same movie! This movie is a gem, the dialogue is amazing.

"Le Samourai"- Jean Pierre Melville's best. Alain Delon plays a loner assassin.

"The Killing" Great early Stanley Kubrick film with Sterling Hayden planning a heist on a horse racetrack.
