If You Like Movies...
— Maetenloch

You're in luck this weekend since Hulu is offering the Criterion series of classic movies for free.

Pretty much any of their movies are worth watching but if you're unsure of where to start I'd recommend one the following:

The Seven Samurai - 3 hours long but a classic. There's a reason this movie has inspired and been copied by so many other directors.

Solaris - A classic sci-fi movie about a scientist sent to a space station where the crew has been slowly going insane. Still better than the 2002 Clooney/Soderbergh remake.

La Jetée - A time travelling tale about a slave from the future that the movie 12 Monkeys was based on.

The Hidden Fortress - A Japanese movie about a fleeing princess and general, hidden gold, and two bumbling peasants that was a direct inspiration for George Lucas' Star Wars. It's enjoyable in its own right but even better as you recognize all the parts that later appeared in Star Wars.

8 The Zatoichi movies aren't bad, either. 'M' is a real good one, so are most of the Kurosawas. Equinox is probably the best thing you'll ever get to watch with a young Frank "Herb Tarlek' Bonner. The Blob and First Man into Space? Really? And that looks like a '65 Barracuda on the cover of 'The Cars that Ate Paris.'

24 Tarantino didn't direct man with the iron fists. His name is only attached as a producer. The black guy that ends up being the man with the iron fists is the one who directed it. So mainly just question tarantinos Tate in movies as to why he thought it was worth having in theaters

31 Solaris has been available for quite a while over on MosFilm's YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/mosfilm, in Russian with English subtitles. It is, however, called Солярис over there.

I'm not a fan of how MosFilm's been organizing stuff, though. Seems like everytime I go over there, they've reworked their page and made things harder to find.

I'll hand it to the French; they don't pull any punches in depicting their society/ criminal justice system/politics as totally corrupt and the Muzzies look like the scum they really are. And lots of good simulate sex, flesh and hot chicks including my future ex-wife Audrey Fleurot. She is an amazing redheaded bombshell. Good actress too.

Yes, the Soderbegh/Hollywood version of Solaris was much worse than the Tarkovsky/Soviet version, which in turn was far worse than original novel by Stanislaw Lem.  And it's possible to finish reading the novel in less time than it takes to watch the Tarkovsky version, where, as I recall, it takes over an hour for the main character to arrive at the space station although in the book that happens in the first chapter.  The Soderbegh version was based on the Tarkovsky version rather than on the novel, and it stripped out even more elements from the story, leaving little more than a romance flick.

The meteor that exploded over Russia and injured nearly 1,000 people Friday morning was astonishingly well-documented by amateur videographers, and many of the videos seem to have been captured from the dashboards of cars.

109 Among the Hulu Criterion stuff, I would unreservedly recommend A Woman Under The Influence (or any of the other Cassavetes films,) The Blob, Naked City, Things to Come, The Match Factory Girl, M, The Passion of Joan of Arc, La Strada, The Wages of Fear, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, Mouchette. M is a must-see. The Passion of Joan of Arc is probably the best silent film I've seen, and I've seen dozens. It has amazing casting and closeups. On the DVD, you can see the before-and-after restoration sample clips; the restorers were miracle workers. I despise Godard, but Hulu has Breathless, which is Godard's best IMHO.

116 Everybody beat me to warning how much Solaris sucks.  You literally spend about 15 minutes watching a car drive through a tunnel.  What that movie does is commit a crime.  It wastes the time of its viewers and insults them by assuming their lives are so empty they have nothing better to do.

For the love of God, save yourself the misery.  I think the people who sit through it feel like they HAVE to like it just to justify what has been done to them.

117 Wise move not to post Eraserhead.

There's a Criterion version? I never checked. I bought the crazy expensive one Lynch put out himself, because I know how much money he blew making the digital version look good, so I was like, "Thanks dude, here's too much money." And also that's the only movie ever made (so far) that has no horrible mistakes in it, so I figured I could spare the only guy who ever bothered to make sure his movie was done right all the way through a hundred bucks (or however many bucks it was).

... The Clooney Solaris is less stupid than the commie one, but its still tedious.

Yeah, the remake has a Sassy Black DMV Lady in it. Saves the picture. I hate when movies are tonally consistent. Gotta have one stock type in there, all whackin' me in the face, or I just drift off.

The Seven Samurai is actually a really good movie, but it starts a little slow, and there are some other slow moments in it,  but if you've seen The Magnificent Severn  (which is also a great movie) you'll appreciate The Seven Samurai, as The Magnificent Seven was lifted from that.

If you've never seen "Ran", you should see that also.  It also starts slow, but has a great sequence of bloody action sequences, where lots of people get killed and blowed up.  The ending in particular is very graphic, without giving away a spoiler.  The Japanese love graphic violence in movies almost as much as Americans do.

McQueen raced motorcycles, and complained about the "stunt man" who was doing the stunts, and then did a much better job himself.

197 I don't think The Seven Samurai is BETTER than the Magnificent Seven, just really interesting in how they are the same in many ways.  And The Seven Samurai is a really good movie.  Even with the subtitles, you still get the message.  Movies are very visual and Akira Kursawa was a very good director.  Another good movie he made was "Yojimbo", which was copied into a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western,  I think "A Fistful of Dollars".

198 188 And yeah,he had a big ego.Didn't do Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid over the way his name was going to be billed with Newman(Redford was the replacement)and Yul Brenner never worked with him again(and he was Yul's choice for Magnificent 7) because he felt McQueen upstaged him in every scene they shot together.

204 I couldn't stand "Solaris", and this is coming from someone who likes Ozu movies. However, as slow and pointless as I thought Solaris was, I took it in stride because I'd seen "Stalker" by the same director earlier, and I could keep telling myself "yeah, this is terrible, but it's still better than Stalker." Seriously, that movie is two-and-a-half hours of people walking around the woods and abandoned buildings. I cannot figure out how it ever got popular.

213 Speaking as an enormous dork who made a project out of watching all of Akira Kurosawa's movies in 2011-2012, I'd say that his best is "The Seven Samurai", while the following are also top-notch: "Ikiru" - A dried-up career bureaucrat learns he is dying of cancer and tries to find some meaning in his last days, "High and Low" - A mystery drama adapted from an Ed McBain novel, kidnappers capture the son of a rich man's chauffeur by mistake, will the tycoon still pay the ransom? (Spielberg's splash of pink in Schindler's List is almost certainly stolen from this movie.) "Stray Dog" - Kurosawa's other police picture, Toshiro Mifune plays a young detective who has his gun stolen by a pickpocket and hunts him down as the pickpocket goes on a crime spree. "Rashomon" - the famous 'one story told from multiple perspectives' movie. Good if a little arty. As others have mentioned, "Yojimbo" and "Ran" are both excellent. Kurosawa also did an adaptation of Macbeth, "Throne of Blood" that is definitely worth watching.

263 Here's something about Akira Kursawa: he was greatly influenced by John Ford and the entire Western genre. He loved the idea of the gunslinger who has to make a choice, which is the foundation of most great Westerns.

So, he incorporated these themes into his films.

And then, his movies get copied and turned into: other Westerns.

Also, Star Wars.

Cary Grant played the sub skipper, LCDR Matt Sherman. There was a TV show back in the seventies that I remember watching, though I don't remember much. John Astin's Wikipedia page uses the publicity photo of him as Sherman, vice being Gomez. Kind of an unusual choice. I always feel an affinity for the name Sherman. Had the chance to meet William T.'s great-grandson (or some such direct descent) in primary when he was a flight school instructor. The family is still short.

Whoops say no more, looks like the remake is coming out this year.  And yes the dog got renamed Digger.  So now they insult the Aussies in the name of being politically correct.

290 Avast the movie threads gone down with all hands... Anywho, if you've never seen the original movie of "The Vanishing". Go directly to Hulu's Criterion site and watch it. Try to read nothing about it. A great slow burn creepfest with a great ending.

293 FUCKING TALKING TO STUPID LEFTIST TROLLS. HOW DUZ IT WORK???? Just because American leftists hate America, all of a suddenly fascism is right-wing. Look, Europe is OVER. Their definition and right and left is obsolete. Stop using it, you pucilaneous twat. Racism is leftist. Militarism is leftist. Cultism is leftist. Corporatism is leftist. The only reason the American left doesn't think nationalism is leftist is because AMERICA AIN'T LEFTIST AND SO THEY HATE THEIR COUNTRY, you malformed sewer-dweller. We were a wee bit south of Tasman's Land, uncharted waters. A lone canoe came from the mist to meet us.

As he was brought aboard, he was pale as a scotsmans' ass, in fear.

Our cook, Meenymoe, understood his blatherings.

He warned us of a creature that the natives called "Barako"  A fearsome creature that flapped it's ears and had the face of a weasel, with long skinny legs like that of a momjean.

Agh, me throat is dry, give me a wee nip and I'll tell ye more.

You are the dumbest f'ker on the planet.  Hayek used "conservative" and "liberal" in the classical sense.  He did not hate conservatives by any stretch of the imagination.  He did point out that his ideology was libertarian.

Who are you kidding, erg?  Most of the people here have read Hayek.  Do you think I believe for a second that you have?  No.  You're an idiot.  You know nothing about history.  Whenever you've tried to wade into it you've been so embarrassingly wrong that I can only conclude the reasons you still show up is that you're an insecure masochist.

Quit being an idiot.

303 Cut the bullshit, AD.

Liberalism sprung from the Father of Liberalism - John Locke, where Conservatism came from Edmund Burke.  Both are legit but very old so Hayek certainly knew the difference.

You are a complete retard.

If you're going to pretend to be educated, at least spend more time pretending to read Alexander Pope:

"A little learning is a dangerous thing.
Drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring"

Memorize that, you complete thoroughbred moron (and I mean "moron" not just as an insult, but in the scientific definition of the term).

"Liberal" until the second half of the 20th century in the U.S. included "free market" and "limited government" in its meaning.  It did not refer to what it does now, which is "leftwing."  It continued to refer to "free market" and "limited government" for a longer period of time in Europe.  Hence, the distinction between the modern definition of "liberal" and the old definition "classical liberal."  This wouldn't be complicated for you to understand if you had ever actually read Locke, because you would know that his work in no way embodied the modern definition of "liberal," i.e., leftwing.

The root of "leftwing," modern liberalism, can be located in a number of places, but owes much more to Rousseau and, subsequently, the French Revolution.

Likewise, most conservative also trace their ideology back to Adam Smith.  They consider him equally if not more important that Burke.  Libertarians, classical liberals like Hayek, also trace their roots to him.

Now, none of this would be necessary if you'd ever bothered to have read a single author I just cited.  You know and I know you haven't.  Do I have to give you history lessons on anything else?  Feel free to ask.  I'm bored.

310 According to FEC records the Doctor has only given to Dems (1) and no GOPers.  I am correct there.

And like Hayek and Ayn Rand I believe in Free Markets and Free Minds therefore I cannot be a conservative and must be a liberal (classic if you wish).

Posted by: Herbert Hymenhopper at February 16, 2013 06:46 PM (9SdK5)

311 "And like Hayek and Ayn Rand I believe in Free Markets..."

M is a must-see. The Passion of Joan of Arc is probably the best silent film I've seen, and I've seen dozens.'

Co-sign. And Wages of Fear should be on everyone's top 10 list. The scene where they are driving the truckload of dynamite over the creaky bridge is alone worth the price of admission [free.] It is amazing.

Rififi - one of the most original heist/film noirs when released, still a 4* effort and the 20-minute heist scene has been much duplicated but never improved on. Even though it's French you'll love it.

Now that the special effects are possible, maybe someone will make a real Roadside Picnic movie rather than Tarkovsky's barely-recognizable Stalker.  Solaris, despite its faults and being far inferior to Lem's novel, isn't a bad movie, but Stalker has almost nothing to recommend it and dropped almost everything from the novel (by the Strugatsky brothers, Arkady and Boris).

Posted by: DKCZ at February 16, 2013 07:40 PM (9/bcB)

315 You have to be in the right mood for Solaris but I ended up liking it. It's got one of the best mindf-ck final shots I've ever seen.

317 "Sweet Smell of Success" is a must-see. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis in the same movie! This movie is a gem, the dialogue is amazing.

"Le Samourai"- Jean Pierre Melville's best. Alain Delon plays a loner assassin.

"The Killing" Great early Stanley Kubrick film with Sterling Hayden planning a heist on a horse racetrack.
