Is the President... mentally sound?
According to two former officials, CMS staff members struggled at “multiple meetings” during the spring of 2011 to persuade White House officials for permission to publish diagrams known as “concepts of operation,” which they believed were necessary to show states what a federal exchange would look like. The two officials said the White House was reluctant because the diagrams were complex, and they feared that the Republicans might reprise a tactic from the 1990s of then-Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.), who mockingly brandished intricate charts created by a task force led by first lady Hillary Clinton. In the end, one of the former officials said, the White House quashed the diagrams, telling CMS, instead, to praise early work on those state exchanges that matched the hidden federal thinking.

Both my parents were diagnosed with cancer in January. Dad died a month later, and Mom died last month.
After Dad died, we found out that he knew about his abdominal mass for two years but did nothing about it. Mom beat the cancer but starved herself to death.
Both of my parents refused to accept that they had cancer, period. Their denial remained rock solid and perfectly intact until the moment of their deaths. They died hysterical and in terror.
During the ten months of utter torture they put us through, they'd say, "I've never had to do things like this before!"
We'd say, "Well, you never had metastasized state four cancer before," but it did no good. Dad refused to have his mass checked until it was the size of a soccer ball. He hid it with baggy clothing. After he died, we found new underwear in his closet; it has a 52-inch waist. His plan was to just keep buying bigger and bigger underwear.
When we told Mom she would get cachexia and die of congestive heart failure, she'd say, "That's not going to happen! You worry too much. I've never had to eat three meals a day, and I'm not going to start now!"
She lost sixty pounds and died of congestive heart failure, having beaten the cancer but killed herself with cachexia.
We begged, cried, and talked to our parents for hundreds of hours. We told them, "You. Will. Die." They shook their heads and said, "No we won't. Everything will be fine. Stop nagging!"
Obama is--like my parents--insane. That's all there is to it. Accept it. Stop questioning it. I had to accept that both my parents were insane, which is a mite harder than having to accept that a perfect stranger and a corrupt machine politician with a riotous family history is insane.
No fact, no argument, no evidence, and no failure will penetrate Obama's denial and pathological need to do what he and only he wants. Both my parents didn't want to die of cancer, so to prove that they didn't have cancer, they refused to cooperate with their treatment.
Like my parents, Obama will stick to his guns until he's in an urn. Count on it. Stop questioning why. The answer is, "Because he's insane. He was damaged beyond repair as a child."

Hah. I recall a MAD magazine satire, a game show where some mafioso chose the best cops - there was a crooked cop, and an honest one. The mafioso of course chose the cheap date, the cop who was bribable by $200.
But then the other cop, the "honest" cop complained. So the mafioso said, what if I gave you $500. The honest cop retorted angrily, "do you think you can buy off the only honest cop in this town for $500?!"
At $750 the deal was settled.

I am so sorry. It has been a truly dreadful year for you and your family.>>>>
Thank you. The good news is that it clarified my mind. Some people will stay on the road even though they see that three miles ahead the bridge is out.
Three of my siblings are exactly replicating my parents' demise. Dad denied his diabetes; my sister does the same. Mom denied her obesity; my brother does the same; Dad denied his glaucoma; another brother does the same.
It's the house-of-cards syndrome: Addressing one failure will make the entire edifice collapse, since everything is based on lies and falsehood.
A few years ago, my eye doctor told me that I probably had multiple sclerosis, one of my worst fears. I went out and sat in my car, and I thought of the millions who've died before me, and they comforted me. They were all my brothers and sisters. They gave me the strength to face my fear. I wouldn't let them down. I wouldn't let down the troops who'd died in Iraq and Afghanistan. We'd be together, having experienced the Great Mystery.
I didn't have MS, but that experience made me lose my fear of death. My father literally ran through the house screaming, and my mother thrashed and wept for the first time since she was a child.
At some point, we will see Obama totally lose control in public. People this rigid and steeped in denial ALWAYS break down. Always.

Things were MUCH worse under and after Carter. The clerks were forced to use ballpoint pen REFILLS instead of pens, so they had to learn how to write with floppy tubes of plastic.
Read Tommy Franks's book "American Soldier." In the early eighties, there were open drug-dealing syndicates in barracks.
My illiterate brother-in-law served in the early to mid eighties. He has a lengthy criminal record and breaks absolutely everything he touches.
We're nowhere near as bad off now as we were under Carter and right after. Trust me.

You know why I believe this?
Because in the mid 2000s, a movie came out called "Buffalo Soldiers". About how bad morale was in the US Army stationed in Germany under Reagan. The reason morale was bad was because the troops were bad; because "who wants to fight for the losing team".
But in the mid 1980s, America wasn't the losing team.
Still, it did seem like a realistic portrayal of how a dysfunctional US Army would work. I have to assume that the writers had transposed some other administration's military into Reagan's. And that had to have been Carter's. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the script had originally referred to Carter and got refactored by The Suits.

I just read about the Russian army's aircraft competition in 1912. There was a German named Stegalu who had a plane that featured welded steel joints, cantilever wings, a wooden veneer skin instead of linen, and ailerons instead of the wing-warping that everyone else used. It was decades ahead of its time.
The problem was that the inventor, Steglau, wouldn't let any professional pilots fly it. He said flying was easy, even though he'd never flown. All you had to do was start the engine and off you'd go.
So he got in the plane and took off. It was fast but so heavy that it never got more than twenty feet off the ground. He buzzed the crowds and crashed eight or nine times, once after the propeller fell off in mid-flight.
The plane was so tough it survived the multiple crashes without damage. Steglau finally dropped it in a ditch and voluntarily removed himself from the competition.

We did have more than TWO Combat Brigades who were rated as combat ready...
We did have many more Heavy Divisions... instead of the new 'light' Brigades we have now...
US Navy? 533 Combatant ships... vs. 285 today... 13 Carriers vs. 11...>>>>
Apples and oranges. Cold War versus asymmetrical war.
Also, only two regiment-sized units in the entire US Army are combat ready? Do you really believe that, even though Odierno said it?
The army has agreed to a 25 percent cut in overhead for headquarters. Doesn't that tell you something?

Lots of exec's put the kind of heat on, to make sure people stretch. The ones that survive in the real world have that feedback loop where problems find their way back to them, and then they know when they need to recalibrate and adjust plans. They might say the same things initially, but they build the channels to keep themselves in check. They build the structure to where they can see when the grunts are in trouble. They listen.
But TFG is a manchild with that lethal arrogance/ignorance combo going, as evidenced time and time again. It's not about how smart you are, it's about knowing what you don't know. A man of average, or worse, intelligence that knows what he is will be of less harm than a very "smart" man that overestimates himself.

The only example I can think of probably isn't exactly applicable, but fuckit.
Brig Gen James Ripley was head of the Ordnance Corps for the Union Army through most of the Civil War. Refused to purchase rifles to replace smoothbore muskets at the beginning of the war, because he claimed that the old rifles barrels could easily be rifled and issued out to troops.
Nope. Didn't work.
Later on, he refused to even consider the new breech-loading rifles just being invented, because they would "waste ammunition". As I recall, Lincoln had to give him a direct order to test the Spenser rifles.......and he still dragged his feet, and sabotaged the tests by imposing hugely unrealistic expectations. Lincoln finally had him replaced in late 1863 because of the refusal.

I KNEW this was fishy, and it took me only a few seconds of online research to find the real story.
The definition of "combat ready" includes training in ethics, cultural awareness, SHARP (Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention), public affairs, rules of engagement, information assurance (IA), language training, command climate surveys, data collecting on medical readiness and immunization, and so on.
Much of this is shit that has nothing to do with combat. So while it's technically true, it's also a lie.

I suspect much of the Benghazi clusterfuck was also caused and driven by similar political considerations-- seriously egregious decisions and subsequent cover-up driven by fear of what Republicans would do if true facts were known. Of course, as long as the MSM colludes and covers for them (e.g. by making the Benghazi story about Romney), no problem.
Obamacare's a different animal. How satisfying it is, to see the GOP and Tea Party's warnings on Obamarace vindicated. And Benghazi may yet, someday, leave a bloody ugly stain on Obama's & Hillary's legacy.

Two years before he died, Dad had an operation on his hand. After the operation, they told him to NOT USE A SLING. They took a piece of paper that said "Do not use a sling" and highlighted it in yellow right in front of his face. He nodded vigorously. I sat by his bed as the nurses did this.
"Do you understand?" the nurse asked.
"Yes, I do. No sling. Got it."
I drove him home, went to check my e-mail (I lived next door to Mom and Dad so I could take care of them; they let me live rent free in exchange), came back, and Dad was wearing a sling.
"What are you doing?" I asked. "They told you not to wear a sling."
"No they didn't."
"YES THEY DID! I WAS SITTING RIGHT THERE!"
"They said no such thing."
I asked him for all the discharge papers. He told me they were on his desk. I looked through and found every single one--except for the one telling him to not wear a sling. He'd destroyed it.
He wanted to wear a sling for the sympathy he'd get on how brave he was being. As a result his hand healed into a claw, and he bitched about it until he died.
There was no reaching him. Actions had no consequences. Obama is exactly the same way.

He's got that trait that many of us have seen in a particularly bad boss. The one where they say something like "Failure is not an option" or "We will make this deadline", all while not allowing negative feedback to come back up the chain when needed.
Woe betide the moron who's stupid enough to point out where management fucked up. Speaking as that moron.......
Worked for a company that was doing a multi-million $ national project for one of the big three cellular telephone carriers. Hundreds of microwave radios integrated into outdoor cabinets for install, fully wired with power, RF cabling, multiple configurations blah, blah. I was a senior technician running the tech team that was to do the assembly according to the customer's specs. At one of the planning meetings, I asked when I could expect the engineering drawings for the installs, so I could start training the techs.
"What engineering drawings?"
"The ones that the customer expects US to produce. It's on page 65 of the contract."
*everyone in the room flips through their copy of the contract*
"Oh, shit............So Cur, when do you think you'll have them ready?"
"Depends on how long it'll take me to learn how to use AutoCAD. Don't we have engineers that do this?"
"They're sales engineers, that's more important."
A month later, I'd bullshitted my way through actually producing the drawings, and the customer accepted them. Surprised the hell out of me.
The boss bought me lunch.

Last year over the holidays, I was part of a conversation among some leftists, most of whom just assumed I was one of them. The one person who knew I wasn't pointed out to the others that I had supported Romney. They were sort of wide-eyed and incredulous for a moment, as if it did not compute in their universe that anyone could. Then when I said calmly I didn't care, it's all going to come crashing down sooner than you think and faster than you think (and I wasn't just talking about Obamacare), there was a silence for a moment, then they went right back to their conversation as if I wasn't there. They truly want to live in a fantasy universe that is not connected to the actual world.
