++IG: Treasury Dept was wide open to our ethical hackers
— Purple Avenger

Nothing could possibly go wrong if the US Treasury's IT systems were penetrated and disrupted, right? Un-possible. The Treasury is a veritable fortress of security and stability, right?

TOP MEN baby, top men.

We found that default factory-preset administrative usernames and passwords were present in OCCÂ’s systems. In one test we conducted, we discovered a default username and password of an internal service account on an OCC server which had local administrator privileges. We used those privileges and deployed our penetration test toolÂ’s agents to the host server. That server contained password hashes for local and domain administrator accounts. Using these hashes, we obtained a domain administratorÂ’s password, which we then used to log on to the network domain controller. With full access given to a typical domain administrative account, we created a domain administrator account and thereby had full control of OCCÂ’s
network.
In accordance with our Rules of Engagement, we did not attempt to perform actions that would disrupt OCCÂ’s operations, such as deleting data, powering off servers or other resources, locking out accounts, and similar activities, any of which could have resulted in interruption or shutdown of devices or services. However, malicious attackers would have no such restrictions against performing these actions
Because systems and devices connected to OCCÂ’s internal
network could freely communicate between one another, with very little internal partitioning, we successfully attacked multiple OCC systems in a very short amount of time from a single workstation.
It just gets worser and worser as you go deeper and deeper into the report. I think you get the idea. The IG's hacking crew seems pretty good. Treasury staff? maybe not so much.

Until someone changes (or ignores) those Rules of Engagement, nothing will change. The Treasury IT guys will say, "Yeah, but if they'd tried X, the system would have Y" and everyone will applaud them.

Most old VAX systems had the password for user "SYSTEM" of "SYSTEM' which a majority of users never changed.

Except that as good as they are, the Advanced Persistent Threat from the Chinese government/military, and the black hats from the Eastern European/Russian criminal syndicates, are no doubt considerably better.

At this point, if government has any information about you, odds are excellent that that information has been compromised. In an era when government are determined to be informational vacuum cleaners sucking up every last scrap of data, that poses a little bit of a problem.

Pretty much, the ability to go in and kill the servers or lock everyone else out of the system should be enough to tell Treasury to get off their fucking asses and get IT to fix things.

78 I know someone who worked at UC Berkeley in the late '70s and early '80s. He said, back then, security was practically nonexistent. From a UC campus workstation, he 9for fun) hacked into the Pentagon, the Army, the FBI, among many others. Never did anything nefarious -- just to see if it was possible. Actually, "hack" is not even the appropriate word. He just tried to log in, and was able to, because there was no passwords at all, or they were self-evident. The only barrier to hacking the entire ARPANET was simply having the basic knowledge of how networks even function (pretty esoteric knowledge back then). I see that things have only marginally improved since the Carter era.

It has always been this way, except in the past the most contact people had with the US government was the local post office.  There was no contact with the incompetent political appointees and the suck-up hacks they promoted out of the actual bureaucratic ranks to run the agencies for them.  So everything seemed to be fine because the mail actually did arrive, so people assumed the rest of them knew what they were doing.

Well, Israel is indeed    the Jewish homeland, but it's not inhabited    nor visited    solely   by Jews.    Building a statue to Jesus of Nazareth in Nazareth is pretty reasonable, given that he was kind of an important guy in history regardless of your religious leanings.  And anyway,    tourism   dollars never hurt!

The fact that they get to stick a thumb in the muzzies' eyes?   Just a bonus.

173 As to what Jews think of Jesus, as with any other opinion, down to "what's the colour of the sky" it depends on which Jew you ask and how and often where and when. In the Babylonian Talmud, Jesus is somewhat infamously treated as one who encouraged idolatry (worship of himself), yes. Peter Schäfer's book explains why - because they were in a somewhat lightspirited struggle for converts in Babylonia under the Sasanian Empire, with the Christians and Mandaeans, and no-one was going to get hurt as long as a "none of the above" like the Zoroastrians were in charge. Elsewhere the Jews have historically been more guarded. They didn't want to insult Muslims either (who also object to Jesus claiming to be an idolator). Lately Jews have got into the textual-criticism thing, and so wonder if Jesus was actually a Hanina Bar Dosa sort of sage whose teachings were corrupted by his apostles. That wouldn't insult Jesus, exactly, but it does kind of annoy people who believe said apostles (mostly Paul and the Johannines).

174 Well, I have a garden gnome, so I'll front the Israelis the Jesus statue.  Who am I to judge?

But if you're on Medicaid, you can never get away, and we still get to take your stuff when you die (or we death panel you).

Suckers.

178 Big Fat Meanie, short answer is no.

USS Yamato got whacked by a rogue virus that got into their computer systems.  Either the writers never studied computer security or Star Fleet thinks they can't get hacked.  Which is very silly since James T. Kirk hacked the Kobayashi Maru simulation.

180 But I'm the admin so I used the username "admin" and then it asked me to set password so I typed "password" just like it told me.

181 Treasiry Department, eh? The Department that used to run the Secret Service and the BATF? I wonder what a similar audit of DHS would show? The DOE lab I work for would have regular network security audits like that. We didn't have firewalls because of the collaboration our open research needed, so the White Hats thought we'd be easy to break into. What we had instead were programs that watched network traffic and looked for patterns that hackers would use, then their connections would get shut down. The White Hats would just get started on their break-in when they'd get cut off by our system, they'd have to switch to a different computer which would also get cut off, eventually they ran out of computers. We also regularly searched our password hashes for weak passwords and scanned our own network for un-patched or unsecured computers which were then put in a network jailhouse until they were fixed. The White Hats hated us. Said our security was sub-standard because we didn't use firewalls like the conventional wisdom said we should, and could we please turn off our security system so they could prove it. We declined to accommodate them. As time went on, firewall-protected networks were shown to lack security in depth as the firewall bred complacency. A hard shell with a gooey low-security middle -- easy to take over once you found a way through the shell. The way our lab did things is now the standard.

182 My buddy S. Kylab said that these systems will be a lot more secure once the "interface glitches" are taken care of. Pretty sure he was referring to the human part of the interface.
