That looks like I-5 northbound  just below the Orange County line--and on or near  USMC Camp Pendleton.

 

But I've also seen the same sign on a border freeway that goes from I-5 over to the Otay Mesa checkpoint just about a mile north of the border in San Diego County.  I've always thought of the sign as marking the finish line in the "sneak across the border track event".    Course once they put the good fence up there on the border between San Diego and Tijuana--guess what? It worked--cut the entrants in the field down to a very reasonable number and the referees--er Border Patrol could catch most of the entrants.

I spent 3 years stationed in Guantanamo Bay Cuba.  Had a boat there and went fishing most weekend nights plus plenty of Scuba Diving.  We used to go as close to the Marine Gate over by Gunatanamara as we could to cast net Herring for bait becasue they would congregate on the shoals there.  And every single night we went out there (typically 2-5 AM depending on the tide) we heard mines going off from people trying to cross into the US side.  Rumor was they would send the older people, Grandma or Grandpa, first so the kids had at least a chance to get through.  Some of them made it and they would be sent on a plane to the US and we never really saw them, just a few trucks the marines had.  When I made Chief there was  Corpsman who was a mortician and he had to do the autoposies on all of the people who did not make it and washed ashore.  Sad.

 

Those are the people who I would welcome and have no issue setting them up here in the US.

15 Assuming the immigration bill really is dead... should the GOP construct an alternative bill ready to pass in the event of a 2014 Senate takeover?  Or is it better to let the issue fade into the background?

I still would like a fencing, eVerify, and a guest-worker program... along with reforming the legal immigration system to favor skills over nation-quotas. And I really ant to put an end to chain-immigration. Unless you are a dependent to a U.S. citizen (child, spouse or grandparent), you need to apply independently.  I'd be willing to trade legalization to adults and citizenship to minors if those reforms are adopted.

Just after clearing one of those inspection stations I look to the car beside me to see a young man making the sign of the cross (father, son, holy ghost, amen) as he exited.

I could only laugh because it was obvious to me he was expecting to be caught in violation of something and wasn't.

72 That sign on the top of the post? That sez "Caution"? First installed in San Diego about 20 years ago. But there was also a spanish language version. Identical pictograph of the fleeing family, but it said "Prohibido". Which is spanish for "prohibited". These signs were placed in the median and sides of I-5, because illegals were darting out across traffic, sometimes because the border patrol would chase them. Several were killed. So the signs were installed. And some people (you know who I'm talkin' 'bout, rite?) raised a big hullabaloo, saying it was racist to have the english version say "caution" and the spanish version to say "prohibited". You know what I mean?

177 Had a lot of conversations this weekend with Americans of all shapes, sizes, ages and colors.  Bottom line, no one, no one likes the immigration bill.  Black Americans see that it will hurt the chances for their kids to get jobs.  They realize having a job helps keep you out of trouble and gives you something to strive for.  And, oddly enough out of everyone I spoke with, people who themselves are immigrants just needed you to open the door so they could give you an earful about "fairness".  They are particularly pissed off.  Parents are pissed off because their progeny have nice college degrees and aren't doing college degree jobs but are thankful to have jobs.  But, every one of the angry parents said that the loan bills were due six months after you leave school, job or not.  Which made for interesting conversations about paying the loans for their kids and not expecting the money back.  I know people say not everyone has loans but I think the reality is that everyone has loans.  Someone's dad said he was angry with the brokerage house that gave him the printout of what to save for college.  They assured him, said he, that this was the right amount and he'd have to pay nothing extra.  Guess what, he said he saved three times that much and his kids still have loans and he has some too.  He made me laugh as he has his printout and he's seriously thinking of suing them for malpractice (yeah he's a doctor).   He said if he underestimated like that on a surgery he'd be getting sued so why shouldn't they.  People aren't really angry, more like more informed than I ever realized and more determined to mire through this.

A lot of people said they called their legislators. That one surprised me.  I'm thinking the American people are not as asleep as the media would like us to believe.

Liberals claim to want these rules. Take them up on it. Make them swallow those rules whole. In public. Embarrass the shit out of them.

Honestly, there's nothing he could have said that would have done any good, and a lot that could have made things worse.  If he came out against the prosecution, then the left would have had a field day by claiming that Corey and the prosecution team were there to throw the case.  If he condemned Zimmerman, then the right would accuse him of tainting the jury pool and trying to deny Zimmerman a fair hearing.

We do not hire illegals, but it would be nice if once in a while I knew that they are checking to see if employers, or in my case, employer reps, are doing their job. Their requirements are low because they also live in substandard housing or crowd in with dozens of others (also a local or state crime). These conditions also would be revealed or eliminated if the illegal workers were not there to be taken advantage of.

This, I believe, is the impetus for the Pubs embrace of immigration amnesty and a refusal to pass laws that actually would limit or stop illegal immigrants.

It's a Big Business folks.

The employers, the landlords, the check cashing stores.

And to be fair, the American Consumer.

The insistent drive to have goods and services at the lowest cost is what drives the entire buggy.
