I'm No Superman Open Thread
— Ace

Just wanted to let everyone know: I've delayed my vacation until next week, for a bunch of reasons:

1. It's kind of stupid to go on vacation during what I imagine will be the climax of the shutdown showdown. (Though it now appears that may go on longer.)

2. I didn't actually get guest bloggers to cover for me. I just sort of said "Bye!" and told the cobloggers "JUST HANDLE IT!!" Like a Boss. Problem is, I'm not their boss. So I can't say boss-like things like "just handle it."

So I have to contact some guest bloggers and see if they'll pitch in.

3. Yesterday was like a holiday. I'm not going on vacation during a short week. No way. I'm not a sucker.

4. I don't feel all that well so it seems stupid to go on vacation this week.

So no, I'm not working on vacation; I'm doing crappy work during a work week.

In news, the credit agency Fitch has put the US on "negative" outlook, meaning they expect a downward revision in our credit rating. So, like that helps Obama and stuff.

That big game-changing NBC poll that panicked the hell out of the GOP? Looks like a major outlier.

Meanwhile, another Deal could be in the works.

And now, an Otter and Child.

An otter is a type of weasel. (Google It.)

Below, a cool short celebrating Superman's 75th anniversary, with nods to all the different eras and incarnations of the Man of Steel. Including the Super Friends, and including the Super Pets.

Thanks to @drewmtips, @gabrielmalor and @rdbrewer4.

19 Everyone knows "Predator" is a cinematic masterpiece, but it also has the single most disappointing scene in movie history.

Billy stops on the log bridge. He turns around, throws his rifle in the river, and takes off his shirt. He tears his medicine bag off of his neck and wraps it in his hand, then pulls out an impossibly large knife, using it to carve a stripe of bloody war paint on his chest. Yes!!!! We're going to see some hot Badass Indian Tracker vs Predator hand-to-hand combat! This is going to be EPIC!

Then... smash cut to Arnold and the girl in the jungle as they hear Billy's distant, girlish death scream.

Nice work, Billy. What's your Indian name? Speedbump?

I think the GOP will always poll worse, not only because they have the media constantly blaming them, but because they always find a way to piss off not only the Left (who hate them) but the Right (by wimping out/selling out to the Dems). At least the Dems know who their base is and how to please them.

That NBC/WSJ may or may not be bullshit, but this little "fake fact" that's zooming around in conservative circles needs to be put down like a rabid dog.  (You'll notice there's a reason why conservative poll-wonks like Jay Cost or Sean Trende haven't made a big deal of it.)  The 20% number wasn't just "government workers," it was "are you a government employee or is a member of your family one?"  And having 20% of respondents answer yes to THAT question isn't unreasonable, in terms of national demographics.

On day I was heading out to hill the bird feeder, and I heard this squeal and saw the chipmunk run across the yard and kill another chipmunk eating a sunflower seed under the feeder.  Freaked me the hell out.  The little dead chipmunk's eyes were open with the seed in its teeth and a couple of deep gashes in its skull.

I actually went in the house and searched the internet to see if chipmunks carried rabies.  We named the murderous chipmunk "Killer."

Forcing yourself to track down each political outrage, and having to produce content about it at a steady rate about it can easily become one of those jobs.  It is a downer.  You do have to step away from it some time.  I can unplug from it a little bit when I need to, like when my job is depressing enough (like now).  Not as easy for you.

91 My sister had a male and a female gerbil when she was young. She was so excited to watch the mother giving birth one day, until the daddy gerbil began eating the babies, and the mother joined in after birthing the last one. No more pet gerbils after that. Posted by: Jane D'oh at October 15, 2013 08:30 PM (lVPtV) I had pet mice as a kid. Did the same damn thing. Second time, not only did the mom eat the babies, she ate the fucking head off the male. At the tender age of about 11, I was fucking horrified to wake up the next morning to no baby mice and a bloody stump where the head of the male should've been. Dad picked up the whole enclosure thing and just dumped it in the garbage can outside.

131 I grew up on late 50's and 60's DC comics..  every Saturday was comic book day..  I would walk a mile or so to different stores that carried new and/or used comics.

Then one day the lady at the corner newstand said - hey there's a new comic.. Marvel.. Fantastic Four.. woohoo! Then there was Spiderman.. but DC comics were still my fave..

Batman of course was at the top of my list.. but DC had some great characters/story lines that didn't have their own comics.. Adam Strange, Green Arrow.. etc..

Superman, I thought was great in that time period..  then either I grew out of it or they got really stupid.. I cannot tell you which for certain!

185 That NBC/WSJ may or may not be bullshit, but this little "fake fact" that's zooming around in conservative circles needs to be put down like a rabid dog. Posted by: Jeff B. at October 15, 2013 08:37 PM (n/+FT) Well that 20% number was family members LIVING with you. So your telling me that nearly ten percent of that sample work for the feds or live with someone who does when they are 1% of the population???

187 Interesting fact:  Otters do, indeed, carry rabies.  One attacked a family dog on their dock down here several years ago.  At first the family thought it was playing, then shit got real.

But since I also own gems like the oversized Howard the Duck Treasury, they eventually got used. I never did get that one, and I was a huge Duck fan back when Gerber wrote it.

Then tie the shutdown to reforms in Obamacare--Vitter amendment, withdrawal of waivers for Obama's cronies, maybe a year delay in the individual mandate (this would be my throw away in negotiations), and an independent audit of how Obamacare funds already spent have been used.

After the shutdown and Ocare fight has been resolved come back from the holidays and work out a budget tied to the summer debt limit.

294 The polls are biased, but I don't think it's of the "we can ignore them" level.
The Presidential polls were eerily accurate in 2012, RealClearPolitics correct in 49 out of 50 states.

The shutdown is not a real shut down, it's no saving money, it's just giving government workers a paid vacation.  We can't just camp out with a government shutdown for another few months, eventually the public is going to turn and it's going to stick for a while.  The public knows the way you trim government is with legislation, not parliamentry tricks.

If I were the GOP, I'd get a few fig leafs like no Congressional waivers and maybe a few taxes either repealed or delayed, and move on.  Let America have a big bite of the shit sandwich called ObamaCare and you'll see Democrats start getting thrown out of office.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at October 15, 2013 09:33 PM (1RQeV)

No, he's the liberal, Obama-voting first roommate our son had on Okinawa.  They argued constantly.  Served together in Afghanistan, and finally, this kid saw the light and began to hate TFG with the heat of a million suns.

He's the son of life-long MO Dems, and even they hate TFG now.  In the last election, they told their son if he voted again for Barky to not come home again.

Now the kid is conservative-leaning and they're buddies.  It's the kid's first trip to the South.  Should be interesting.  I'm planning to "gently" put him some more knowledge.  Just in case.

404 Julianne Moore and Sigourney Weaver are two actresses who also seem to be aging ridiculously well, though one can never be sure in this modern age of expert plastic surgery.

Gillian Anderson is another one.  As strange as it seems, she's actually only getting HOTTER as she gets older.  And I speak as someone who, erm...did a lot of self-exploration to thoughts of Agent Scully as a pre-pubescent young man.  Ah, the '90s.
