— Ace Commenters, what would I do without them. I saw this bandied around in the last thread and, even if it is easy gimme pseudocontent, well, it's still kind of important.
The mentality here. It's incredible. The left is now expressly Anti-Enlightenment. Nothing is about actual government policy now; everything is expressly about Safeguarding the Privileges and Dignity of the Princeps.
When's the last time Chris Matthews actually cared about some issue that wasn't obviously a proxy for his cultish fanboy impulse to Praise the Lord Obama and Smite the Disbelievers?
Our politics have become retarded (again, I mean this in both the acceptable and unacceptable meanings of the word) by a religious mania not seen since... I don't know when.
I have long contended that man is a fundamentally religious animal -- and I don't necessarily mean that in a good way -- and that many people who consider themselves above religion are actually quite beneath it, and, rather than subscribe to a conventional religion in which their desire for transcendence can be more conventionally satisfied, instead channel their religious impulses into areas which are not by nature religious and which by nature must not be religious.
Our politics now is simply about a god, and I mean the god Obama. And even for those who may doubt the actual divinity of the Unaccomplished One --
Religious hysteria does not require a god. Religious hysteria only requires Dogma & a Devil.
We would be the Devil, here.
So here is noted paranoid and homoerotic political theorist Chris Matthews now speculating that people refer to "Obama" as "Obama" and not "President Obama" for the same reason that non-Christians might call Jesus "Jesus" and not "the Christ Jesus."
God knows we've never referred to previous presidents by their last name only. And God knows we've never refused to grant presidents we don't actually support the full Dignity of their Stately Titles.
On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews claimed that conservatives and Republicans are attempting to “delegitimize” President Obama by calling him “Obama” or “a liberal leader,” Matthews said.“It seems there’s a very interesting compelling continuing effort to delegitimize this president,” he told “Bush’s Brain” author Wayne Slater.
“People on the right say he’s a disaster, which he’s not. Look at what he’s already accomplished,” he added, apparently oblivious to Obama’s record deficits, failed foreign policy and the overall state of the economy.
“But they first of all referred to him, not as the ‘President of the United States’ but as a ‘liberal leader.’ They refer to the health care act of 2010 as ‘a bill.’ They refer to him as ‘Obama.’ They don’t say the ‘the president.’ They don’t say the ‘a law.’ They don’t even speak the language we normally speak in civilized political debate,” he added, as though he would know anything about “civilized political debate.”
“They’ve changed it so much that he’s actually not really supposed to be there,” he continued.
Sounding more like a tinfoil-hat conspiracy theorist than a thoughtful political pundit, Matthews insisted it was all part of a concerted effort to create the conditions where history would regard Obama as an illegitimate president, Noah Rothman added.
“And I’m not paranoid,” he concluded.
“I think that’s right,” Slater said, agreeing with Matthews.
According to Slater, opposition to Obamacare stems from the name that has even been adopted by Obama.
“Get him off the record books,” Matthews added.

@AceofSpadesHQ Matthews was talking to the author of “Bush’s Brain”… not “President Bush’s Brain”, I noticed.

But Bush wasn't god.
I'd also note this idea comes from the same crowd who spent six of Bush's eight years saying, "My President is Josiah Bartlett." (The TV President on that stupid Aaron Sorkin show.)

Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.
Chris has just been freed to be his better self.

The most sanctimony, the most "religiousity" comes from those mock those who believe that God is the creator, and/or Christ is King.
Let me spell it out for you, Chrissy. My messiah forgives all sins, and if I follow his path, I can be lead to redemption.
Your messiah can't even pronounce "corpsman" correctly.

Lots of Christians, when they want to invoke the name of Jesus, they will exaggerate the word "JJJJEEEEEEEEEEESUSSSSSSSSSS" because they believe the name itself has qualities of healing, warding off bad spirits, etc.
The only time I ever hear anyone invoke a fuller name is when the decidedly non-religious refer to Jesus H. Christ.

I've also noticed a lack of "Predident" when referring to the SCOAMF. But I believe that is mostly because Obama is such a unique name that there is no need to qualify it. Nobody's going to be confused with an NFL running-back named "Obama" in the same way there was a Reggie Bush and a George Bush at the same time in popular culture.

I had a boss here several years ago, who was fired ignominiously; since then, they have done everything they could to remove his name from documents, letters, etc. It is almost comical.
There was a Warhammer 40,000 book where the Chaos warleader was referred to as "He Who's Name Must Not Be Spoken", and the followers would put their hands over their mouths whenever they said that. If anyone around here understood the reference, I would do that when referring to the former boss. Maybe we could start doing that when we say "Obama"?

I would also note the miracle of life and birth and the cycles of the stars falls under the category of Sufficiently Advanced Technology is Indistinguishable From Magic, and that life and time and matter are hellaciously advanced technologies, thus rooting in every human being a sense of Awe about the Infinite in Eternal, which we ultimately give the name "God."

Religion accounts for these three qualities. In Christianity, man years for God, because like the gravitational force of the sun, his love pulls us toward him. We recognize that our own sinfulness keeps us from reaching him. But there is a way to atone for our sins. There is a path toward salvation.
>>>For leftist, government and cult figures is how they account for these three qualities.
you're quite right. I might just change the specific motivation from "seeking salvation" to the more general "seeking meaning which connects tiny man to the larger universe," which would come in several modes, salvation being one of them.
But for many it would simply be pure egotism, too.

I try to say "leftism" because "liberalism" -- what was once called liberalism -- has an awful lot to it and in fact most people here subscribe to most of it.
What happened, of course, is that in the 30s communists became a political threat to the Democratic Party and the Party did what parties do, which is to say, co-opted the communists' appeal by adopting many policies and thought-templates and rhetoric swiped from their playbook.
Thus liberalism became tainted by the cancer of leftism, until now, today, there is little of the body we call "liberalism" BUT the cancer of leftism.

--It may or may not be related to a God Gene, but I think man also has a propensity for dynastic monarchism. A democratic republic like America is a historical aberration. Even in the States, though, the past half-century has seen the ascent of quasi-dynaties like the Kennedys, Clintons, and Bushes. It may be as difficult for man to quit these tendencies as for an alcoholic to quit the bottle.

On the wrong track, Ace. Leftists are not 'religious' but instead flatter themselves as 'learned' so the conflating of Jesus and Kennedy, to them, isn't so much about sainthood or salvation but about ideological similitude. eg, JFK founded the Peace Corps so he fed the poor like Jesus. That kind of thing.
As far as Obama goes, its the inverse of Nixon and generalized Republican hate. GOP is the Devil, Obama is the Savior because he killed the GOP. And since he's Black they imagine we're squirming like Vampires shown a cross.
And since we *are* squirming like Vampires shown a cross they suffer confirmation bias, unable to understand that Socialism and Failshit is why for Teh Squirms.

Religion was Man's first shot at attaining that elusive +10 Armor of Right. It isn't even necessary for God (or G-d or god or gods) to answer prayers in a consistent or regular fashion (intermittent reward is actually the most powerful method of reinforcing behavior).

If asked to accurately describe some of our deeply held beliefs, I'm sure a majority of us would have to term a few of them "liberal."
After all, tolerance is a "liberal" trait. Or was until the Prophets of Choom took it over as a cry for special bennies for some and as a call to excuse illegal/antisocial behavior. So, in the non-Dubya way of traditional Western religion and old-fashioned morality, is compassion.
Okay, I know a few Morons are hard-asses who would resist a "liberal" sip of whiskey, but there are a few in every crowd.
Still, some "liberal" beliefs are virtues. I, for one, would be happy with a liberal load of drugs in Bradley Manning's needle.

"$12,000 (or whatever the average cost per student is) per year"
Depends on where it is.
In Washington D.C., the public school system costs $29.732 per student per year (closest approximation). This is the total dollars spent per year divided by the number of students.
In Baltimore it is about $1800 less. In Detroit, about $25,000 (1.3 billion spent, 50,000 kids).
Out in flyover country and the suburbs, it can be as low as $8,000.

That's a decent point. The sad reality is good jobs are never coming back to the cities. Cities are too expensive and do not have as good of infrastructure and potential workforce as suburbs and small towns. So manufacturing and other jobs that might pay a low-skilled, medium-to-low educated person are simply not going to move back into the city, regardless of what "incentives" they give out. If I can build a manufacturing plant in a semi-rural community, where land is cheap, there is plenty of parking, there aren't as many regulations or government grifters, and still have a large and relevant labor pool to draw from, why would I build in the City?
the idea of saving the cities, or bringing in good jobs is insane. The answer is moving people - particularly the poor - out of cities to where they have a much better chance at finding a decent job and where the expenses are much lower so that any job they do find can sustain them.
So, when we talk about the democrats keeping black Americans on the plantation, it is not just ideological, it is literal. The plantations in this case are the dead cities where there are no jobs and no hope, but from which democrats can reap votes by keeping poor blacks locked in. Democrats want to give poor inner-city blacks just enough to keep them alive and able to vote, but don't want to improve their lot because to do so could effect the dems' lock on those votes.

They have gone to such extremes that even the most wish washy moderate who stalls at the checkout counter when asked "paper or plastic" can see that what they are saying is irrational.
They then begin to question EVERYTHING they say and this can and will to many being enlightened as to the willingness of the left to go to any extremes embrace any evil thing to attain what they believe to be best for the rest of us and to assuage their guilt and thirst for control.
I've been on sites I would never believe would have anything sensible to say in response to the normal craziness and they appear now to be willing to at least listen thoughtfully to an opposite view from what they normally would have cheered on without regard to any other.
They're also beginning to see that Obama is or at least has become the very thing they KNEW Bush/Cheney was.
They now understand that his promises are empty and that his words are meant to be parsed however the listener wants but that Obama isn't to be held to blame for any lack or failure.
They can understand that words can have more than one meaning and assuming that what he said was what you THOUGHT he meant has been shown to be false and most times diametrically opposite to what was ASSUMED.
We all know that but it is now that those, who refused to see what we kept pointing out prior to now, are now realizing they bought a lie. Lock, Stock and Barrel. And find that we are on a path that may lead to worse things happening.
With enlightenment comes decision.
The only Fly in the Ointment is the Republican party establishment.
I don't think they're up to leading the country out of the ditch that Obama has put us into.

The second person is now entirely dependent on the experts he has chosen. And if those experts might seem to be not-so-expert, he will vigorously defend them because criticism of them is criticism of the choices he has made, and thus, of his self.

I think MSNBC could turn things around by relacing Chrissie's hour with "Roadrunner" cartoons. Don't tell Chris, of course, just have a small crew in the studio to turn the little red lights on the cameras on and off, and he'd be none the wiser, and the advertizers would start getting the eyeballs they are paying for.
I'd watch for sure. I love Roadrunner cartoons, and they are less predictable in their outcome than MSNBC's political commentaries.

Honestly, its sad knowing that our society is going to be the butt of jokes for ages to come. There are going to be two sets of Godwin's law, one for the supreme evil, the Nazis, and another for the supreme stupidity, us.
Who elected a credentialed PR spokesman and a mental retard to run the most complex, largest and cumbersome entity in the world? Us!
Who ran up trillions in dollars in debt while having election fights over how fast to increase the rate of spending? Us!
In the middle of the economy coming to a long, shuddering halt, who decided to that the important issue of the day was whether two men could call themselves a customary social, economic, and reproductive unit? These guys! Right here!
Who decided to fix their economic woes by importing their neighboring banana republic's low-skills peasant class? Us again!

I read that about 30 years ago. I recall the incident where the author suggested to a friend that they use strips of aluminum beer can to shim the loose handlebar clamps on his bike, and his friend recoiled in horror.
That all came back to me when a friend was passing through on his BMW R65(?), whatever. It had developed a weepy fuel line. As fate would have it, I had some of the *exact* fuel line on hand, left over from a VW repair. The usual black fabric coated stuff that the Germans used on lots of stuff. He refused to allow me to replace it, saying, "I think I should take it to an authorized BMW dealer". I was flabbergasted..., but he insisted, so we rode the 35 miles or so to a dealer. Idiot.

reading is kind of a specialized activity that some people do but it is not universal. Video games are a lot more common. Since I am not part of that world, I don't know if those kind of ideas are part of the games or if they even can be incorporated into game play. It would seem that basic economics would be part of a lot of game structures where players have to accumulate resources and if they spend resources on one thing, they are not available for another. Are there games that allow players to borrow and get themselves buried in debt?
