Imaginary Gun Thread
— andy

In honor of South Eastern Middle School in Fawn Grove, PA, today's gun thread is imaginary but apparently still just as deadly.

A fifth grader in [Pennsylvania] has been suspended for shooting an imaginary arrow at a classmate. The 10-year-old also faces possible expulsion.

The Rutherford Institute, which is defending Johnny Jones, says he was told he violated the schoolÂ’s zero tolerance policy on weapons. TheyÂ’re working to get the suspension reversed and lifted from his permanent record.

On Friday night’s The Kelly File, defense attorney Jonna Spilbor reacted to the ordeal. “Here’s how ridiculous it is. If we’re going to punish this poor kid for pretending to shoot a bow and arrow, let’s ticket his parents for parking their unicorn in a fire zone.”

OTOH, this could spawn a whole new branch of the "Little Johnny" joke genre, so there's that.

Baby girl and I had a strange conversation about guns last week.  She says she doesn't want to watch any movies or tv shows that have "killing" in them. I said well no, those sorts of shows are not appropriate for little kids. All that blood and guts flying around isn't real but she still is a little young for that kind of thing. She sits silent for a minute and says "I don't like guns Mommy, they kill people."

Now it is not often that I hit instant medieval hellfire rage but I know damn well that kid heard that line from someone who is NOT a member of our family. I seriously had to count down from 20 before I responded.

My response:  Sweetie, guns don't kill people, people kill people. A gun is a tool, just like a hammer or a saw or even a car.  One uses these tools to make life easier/better/safer.  A gun is a tool we use to protect ourselves and our families, and to provide food by hunting.  It can be a dangerous tool if it is not used/handled correctly, same as a saw or a car.  Put a loaded weapon, safeties engaged, put it on a table and leave it alone. It will not jump off the table and spontaneously start murdering people by itself.  Let a complete idiot pick it up and start playing with it and that's when the trouble starts.  By the way, honey, don't ever do that "leave the loaded weapon laying around where any shitforbrains asshole can grab it" thing. Very bad idea.

55 There was a local kerfuffle on Friday when a kid brought an airsoft pistol to a middle school in Tempe, Ariz. They locked down the school. And of course, the headline of the article I saw used "BB gun," which proves that the lib media doesn't even understand the difference between kids toys, let alone the subtle differences between, say, an automatic machine gun and a Ruger 10-22 that's been pimped out. Was the kid stupid? Absolutely. Was the reaction as insane as you'd expect? Who the heck knows, I think we could eventually go full retard.

65 So Little Johnny is sitting on the street corner looking at the bubbles in a jar of turpentine he found in his uncle Clem's garage when Father O'Malley walks up and says: "Good morning, son, what do you have there?" Johnny: "Why, it's turpentine, Father; the Most Powerful Liquid in the World!" Father: "Oh, that's not right, Little Johnny. Holy Water is surely the Most Powerful Liquid in the World; if you put a drop of Holy Water on a pregnant woman's stomach she will pass a boy!" Little Johnny: "Shit, Father, that ain't nothin'. 67 My experience with the "Zero Tolerance Policy" of my local school district was that it allowed the school administrators preen and posture on how they were tough on student misbehavior when a student with no history of misbehavior committed an inadvertent violation while ignoring the real bad actors. I remember our School Resource Officer complaining how the High School principal suspended a student who forgot he had a pocket knife in his pocket and had voluntarily turned it in to the SRO (the SRO said this was a good kid). This same principal ignored the misunderstood minority yoots flaunting their gang colors and their disruptions in class.

Fawn Grove Pa is the home of Thunderstick Enterprises, one of my go-to gun shops.
I drive right past this school each time I go up there.
And is also the hometown of one of Mrs VIA's lifelong friends.
And Fawn Grove consists of one intersection, and a Rutter's gas station.

Pretty much, that's it.
Except for a rather large number of farms, forests, woods, and people who take off school and work for the first day of hunting season.....with guns.

I don't think this will go well for the school officials.

The midlength is the way to go, IMO. Better gas, more forearm to get your supporting arm out to, and it can take a bayonet. Yes, I know, bayonets are pointless (hardy-har-har), but I wouldn't have an AR15 if I didn't have a little Walter Mitty in me. I don't NEED to fix a bayonet, but goddammit if I don't love knowing I CAN.

73 It's no accident that Hollywood and pop culture promote the hipster douche, completely emasculated, latte sipping beta male way of life. It's easier for the government to control a compliant populace, and those testosterone filled, free thinking males make that harder to do. It all starts with changing the cultural norms. It's ok for men to be the nurturer/care givers while their wives are going to work as empowered CEO's and such. Guns are dangerous and bad, so little boys should be discouraged from even thinking about them in a positive, powerful manner. Therefore we must punish kids for even thinking about guns. It's all so insidious, it even goes to fashion. Nothing is more emasculating than skinny jeans for men. And while we're at it, how about eyeliner and make-up for men? Conservatives are in the fight for our lives in today's present culture war.

If you want to stop this Zero Tolerance BS???  You have to make the idiots in charge feel the pain!  Hold the principal, superintendent and teachers involved responsible and cause them social, personal and professional pain.  That means making them miserable by getting all up in their faces.  Confronting them.  Being a prick and calling them an asshole to their retarded faces.

Until I hear of people like Principal Jihn Horton are mocked and shunned by the people in Pennsylvania, fired from his job, and financially hurt; crap like this will continue.  Hit the school in their pocket book, hit the "professional" "administrator" retards in their personal pocket book.  Mock and ridicule them, every teacher, janitor, board member, PTA leader, and even the school crossingguards until they relent.

These idiots have such fragile egos, that they will implode IF people mock them.

90 if guns kill people, then why aren't there mass shootings at gun shows?

IIRC, after Aurora or Newtown or similar atrocity deliberately perpetrated by a mentally ill guy, the Indianapolis MFM was screaming about "gun show accidental shootings" like they were a bigger threat to humanity than the 0.2 inches of snow that's going to kill us all this afternoon (this is the face I am making http://d24w6bsrhbeh9d.cloudfront.net/photo/4810920_700b.jpg).

One idiot who doesn't check to see if a rifle is loaded (OK, two idiots; the owner should have informed the first idiot) apparently invalidates the whole 2A for everyone, but millions of people fraudulently collecting SSDI is just something you have to accept because of all the good it does.  *spit*

Let a complete idiot pick it up and start playing with it and that's when the trouble starts. By the way, honey, don't ever do that "leave the loaded weapon laying around where any shitforbrains asshole can grab it" thing. Very bad idea.)

Madame M- from the Urban Dictionary:

Moby-

An insidious and specialized type of left-wing troll who visits blogs and impersonates a conservative for the purpose of either spreading false rumors intended to sow dissension among conservative voters, or who purposely posts inflammatory and offensive comments for the purpose of discrediting the blog in question.

The term is derived from the name of the liberal musician Moby, who famously suggested in February of 2004 that left-wing activists engage in this type of subterfuge: “For example, you can go on all the pro-life chat rooms and say you’re an outraged right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion.

185 152 Taro, you shoot that CZ yet?

-----------------

Not yet. Pre-Christmas is for Christmas shopping and Christmas money overtime and Christmas cookie eating. Here in Maine, the period between New Years and April is a death march of cold misery, so I have to stretch the fun stuff out. We should have a new local range open just about now so I'll be checking it out for the first time after the holidays.

I did buy a couple sets of new grips, though. I hated the plastic ones. I picked up a rubber set that would have been perfect except they have two weird thumb rests that the plastics don't (couldn't see them in the photos.) Not a deal-breaker, but they'd have been perfect without them. Also grabbed a set of Hogue Pau Ferro after I got a set for my Hi-Power and was blown away by the looks and feel. Can't say the Pau Ferros look as stunning with the flat finish on the CZ, though. Still pretty. Nice slim grip, too.

I have a hard time with grips. All of my autos have multiple sets as I try to find the ones I like best.

Okay -- question for you "experts":

Many years ago I fired a bunch of ammo with corrosive primers through my Colt Officers Model. By the time I cleaned it the next day the barrel was pitted.

So I bought a new barrel, planning on installing it myself.

A while back I was reading about re-barreling the Officers Model and there were some differences in the tolerances of the toggle links and pins. Which gave me the idea that replacing the barrel myself probably wasn't a good one.

So I guess I should take everything to a gun doctor.

The problem is that since the Officers Model was discontinued so long ago getting a different sized toggle link/pin combination is probably impossible. IIRC the tolerances I was reading about were in the thousandths, but were important for the action to return reliably to battery.

So...

If I go to a gunsmith will he charge me the cost of the pistol to replace the barrel? Is there a good chance I can just pop the pin out myself, replace the barrel and press the pin back in and still have a functioning pistol? Are most gunsmiths honest enough to do what is really needed? Should I take it to a couple of gunsmiths for an honest opinion?

Most gun owners I know have never gone to a gunsmith and I don't trust most of the gun store owners in my area. How do I find a reputable gunsmith?

There is a tiny outfit that builds custom rifles not far away. Should I ask them for advice?

260 258 Oh, and no offense guys...but why are you lookiing at uppers for that price when you can have a complete S&W M&P 15-22 for...less?

My brother-in-law has one. Didn't like the feel. Plus my lower is already set up with my preferred gee-gaws.

BTW, Bud's Gun Shop blows chunks.

262 I don't own one, never even held one TBH, but all the local guys at my competitions and local gun forums swear by their M&P 15-22s. Thinking about picking one up myself, after the other 9,782 things I "need" make their way home to me. And also, "extra upper"...yeah, that never works, you know that, right? You will eventually end up with another lower, anyway, so might as well just get a complete factory firearm. I said it here first. =) As for your grips on the CZ...yeah, grips are a very personal thing. I've been happy with the slim checkered aluminum ones from Angus at czcustom. Had them for years, no idea if they are even available anymore, lol. As for Buds...I don't use them for anything but price checks, but they do have several CZs in-stock that are not easy to come by at the brick-and-mortars, and are sitting in my cart on bud's. (I guess by Obamacare rules, I already own those guns, right?)...but what beef you have with Bud's?

Just heard generally negative things on various boards. They seem to have a rep. They've got a 3.17 out of 10 at resellerratings.com on 538 reviews, FWIW.

135 What you have to realize is that there's a significant contingent of losers on this site so bereft of ideas to discuss that they obsess over being the first to identify to their hive-friends who the latest "moby" or "troll" is.

Per House of Erasthenes:

A reverberation of middle school.

"Some “wrong person” says something with visibility, be it a wrong-individual or someone from the-wrong-group, someone that all the “cool kids” have decided is “on the outs.” This is, according to eighth-grade-taboo, not to be tolerated in any way because if you tolerate it you consent to it, and in so doing you may lose whatever social stature you’ve managed to accumulate for yourself. And so, sadly, the more of that social stature you have, the more likely you are to be blinded to what happens next. Lots of energy and time spent on nonsense. Witch hunt, drumhead trial, bullying, call it what you will. All these cool-kids who insist that the not-cool-kid is irrelevant and we shouldn’t “waste any time” listening to what he or she has to say, invest copious quantities of time reminding everyone else of this irrelevance. They’ll waste the uncool-kid’s time on this too, lots of it, and do far worse than that.

You know it’s nonsense — at best — because “this person is irrelevant” is the central message to it all, while the actions surrounding the message insist on the exact opposite. There’s something going on here that is relevant."

270 Looking back now from my advanced age the lack of common sense in todays world , especially as it pertains to guns , is unbelievable . When I was in high school , early 70's, we actually had a rifle team . Rifles were stored at the school range . It was very well supported . Our coach was a retired SFC that was a former member of the Army Marksmanship Unit . Man , talk about world class coaching . In reality the 70's was not that long ago . We had hot and cold running water , air conditioning , even flush toilets but now it seems to have all been on another planet , long ago and very far away .

273 For those of you thinking of a .22 upper, I've been using the .22 insert in my Colt M4 6290 LEO version to great effect. I'm going that route one of these days because somebody gifted me a couple of bricks of the Aguila SSS 60gn. They tumble from my Marlin 39A, so I want to see if the faster twist in an AR would help. Mine are 1:9, and the 6920 is 1:7. Also picked up a Benjamin break-barrel .22 pellet rifle at Wallyworld. Lots of fun, and no twinge of regret over every trigger squeeze's putting me out a dime or more.

276 My invisible life was threatened by this kid's invisible bow and arrow (or was it a crossbow, I don't know, all those AR-15 Assault Bows look the same to me)!

Posted by: Invisible Liberal at December 08, 2013 10:31 AM (BmhuH)

277 I'd pull my kid out of the school because the staff are bug-fuck nuts and likely to run amok killing little kids thinking they are defending themselves.

This is simple - the staff have clearly expressed that they are incapable of distinguishing between a real weapon and some something that is NOT a real weapon (hell, NOT even a real object) - given that in pretty much any society there is some form of justified homicide / self-defense - the first test in judging if a homicide was justified or not is whether the killer believed that their was a threat to their life - a staffer mowing down a kid waving around a M-16 EBR would probably be found not only justified but deemed  a hero - the hysterical bug-fuck nut staffers here would mow down a kid using an air guitar, err, gun or bow and claim they are justified in that they saw a real weapon and since they cannot distinguish between a gun and something that in NOT a gun they are claiming insanity before the fact.

How many fuckin nuts openly show they are fuckin nuts before going off and killing a bunch of people because they are fuckin nuts ? Pretty much all of them.

That's why I'd pull my kids - because some of the staff are so fuckin nuts they REALLY cannot distinguish between weapons and NOT weapons - sooner or later they are going to 'defend' themselves against a room full of 1st graders with .45 fingers.

278 In other news, I'm enjoying my Ruger 10/22 more and more every time I shoot it. I'm thinking of putting some optics on it, any suggestions as to ones that won't make my bank cry for mercy? It came with a Weaver rail for the top of the receiver, but I'm also wondering if there is a way I can put Picatinny rails on there instead.

I've got a rail on mine. It's got a gutter down the middle so you can still use the irons. Let's see, where did I get it? Maybe Midway?

Ah, Amazon, I think. Probably this one:  http://tinyurl.com/orh7xfq

As far as optics go, what's your cost tolerance? Generally cheap optics are a waste of money, but it's a .22, so maybe you could get away with it. Just search on Amazon and read the reviews. If you can handle a touch under a C-note, people in the AR-15 world say that Primary Arms MD-06 are a great buy. If I ever put an optic on my AR, that will be my choice. Really doesn't cost that much more than the cheapest acceptable optic you'll find:
