The Founders and I are with you. This "winning hearts and minds" crap is the effete Left's way of insuring that wars are never won. It's bad for morale, is unnecessarily expensive and hurts our image in the world.

The same goes for the "War on Terror." If we really wanted to win it, we'd begin by clearing out Gitmo immediately (IYKWIM) and making examples of those animals. And we'd be completely justified in doing so morally and legally.

A friend died recently at the age of 87 or 88. He was 18years old when he enlisted in the USMC and was trained as a paratrooper (this in the spring of 1942). By June or so that year the Marines had figured out that they were more likely going to be stepping off a landing craft than jumping from an airplane. So my friend got to go to Guadalcanal with the first landing. Which was a good thing because the Japanese weren't shooting at the first wave. He got a little elementary education on Guadalcanal, then off to middle school at Tarawa, and finally high school at Iwo Jima. He said he learned to keep his head down on Iwo after the fellow next to him had raised his head and looked around--and had his head taken off.

He got out of the Corps in late 45--but then decided to join the reserves a year later. You guessed it---his next "education" was at the Frozen Chosin Reservoir in Korea.

Now you'd figure that a guy like that--later having a career as an insurance executive would be a Republican right? Nope--he was a diehard yellow dog Democrat and even liked Obama.

Musta scambled his brains somewhere along the way---but he was one tough fellow until a combination of Parkinson's, Alzheimers, Macular Degeneration and loss of hearing laid him low.

In any case, we had men like that---probably still do if the feminists and gay activists don't wreck the military.

This is what maddens me about the non-story of treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Sure, it isn't perfect, but we treat our prisoners well, just as we treat our enemies on the battlefield.

Imagine being a WWII German prisoner of the Russians, or a Russian prisoner of the Germans, or an Israeli prisoner of any Arab country.......

I'd slip over there at lunch when I was working and get my ears lowered by a nice old gentleman who'd been a Marine at Chosin. He'd talk about it some, and his stories stuck with me a hell of a lot longer than my hairline did. God bless them all.

28 One of my dad's oldest friends was an artilary captain in Korea. he had command of some half-tracks with Maxson mounted 50s (I used to think they were called "Matson mounts" but Andy's Browning graphic this morning showed me the error of my ways).

He used them against infantry to great effect.

After a minute or so of that, when the tank wheeled around, he jumped out and sprinted. He lived to tell the story.

That aside, I had lunch today with a friend and his nephew, who is home on leave. I will say nothing about his branch or assignment, but he specializes in explosives and small arms. He typically experiences short deployments. You look at, and talk to this kid, well..., 29 year-old, and he exudes confidence and physical well-being. It warms the blood.

Yeah, I have a very sweet cousin in FL who has worked for many years for a radiologist and is very good at her job.

I also guess that the majority convinced the minority using an argument I used as a juror*: Yes, you may think one way, but reading the letter of the law, you have to decide the opposite. *In my case, it was a situation where the letter of the law said "guilty" but several of the jurors were incredulous that the butt of a gun on someone's forehead with a minor injury meant aggravated assault with an unlicensed weapon. But reading the letter of the law, that's what it was.

254 TM's father's gf lived there. She liked to call herself his fiance but since he was still married to someone else and a year and one baby later they still havent married, I'll pass. There was some sort of black mason convention in town and dad and his gf were working it. TM was living with his mother in Miami after living with his step mom for 10 plus years. Dad and step mom split and TM was sent to live with mom. At this time, TM got suspended from school for the third time. A 10 day suspension. His mom got tired of him hanging around the house,i.e., she was at work and knew that him at home was trouble, so she put him on a bus and sent him to Sanford. So, while dad was at the convention, TM hanged out with his older cousin, went to movies, played games, etc. Not much of a punishment. I'm still appalled that when his dad came home that night and saw that TM was not there, he just he turned his phone off and hopped in the sack with the gf. The next morning when it was time to leave, they started calling juvie halls to see if he got picked up by the cops - again.

Naval Aviator

On a carrier, the Naval Aviator looks over at the Catapult Officer ("Shooter") who gives the run up engines signal by rotating his finger above his head. The pilot pushes the throttle forward, verifies all flight controls are operational, checks all gauges, and gives the Cat officer a brisk salute, continuing the Navy/Marine tradition of asking permission to leave the ship. The Cat officer drops to one knee while swooping his arm forward and pointing down deck, granting that permission. The pilot is immediately catapulted and becomes airborne.

Army Aviator

If you've ever seen an Army helicopter pilot preparing for takeoff, you will note that the pilot gives the ground guy a thumbs up before he is given hover and takeoff signals. There are two theories about the origin of this gesture. One is that it is to show that the pilot has identified which of his fingers is the thumb so that he will be able to properly operate his controls. The most compelling theory says that this is to show the ground crewman that the pilot indeed knows which direction is up.

Air Force Pilot

We've all seen Air Force pilots at the air force base look up just before taxiing for takeoff and the ground crew waits until the pilot's thumb is sticking straight up. The crew chief then confirms that he sees the thumb, salutes, and the Air Force pilot then takes off. This time-tested tradition is the last link in the Air Force safety net to confirm that the pilot does not have his thumb up his ass.
