In lieu of Oscar Watching [Journolist]
— Open Blogger

For those morons with the laminated AOSHQ man cards, this Asahi Super Dry beer of a post with cut roll is for you. We are serving it (mostly) Oscar free coupled with some good in lieu of Oscar watching recommendations. For we understand that watching celebrities gush all over themselves, their accountants, line producers, a guy named Jim and the Craft services truck mechanic... gets a wee bit long in the tooth.

We are givers here baby.

So for a complete review of what I am watching in lieu of Oscar, clickery below the foldery. Rockford Files on Netflix. Weather Channel.

Thanks and have a nice evening.

I would like to say that I'm sick and tired of people exploiting the Academy Awards for the propagation of their own personal propaganda. I would like to suggest to Miss Redgrave that her winning an Academy Award is not a pivotal moment in history, does not require a proclamation, and a simple "thank you" would have sufficed."

86 To really nit-pick.  Iowa class battleships had 9 16-in 50 cal guns in three turrets, two fore and one aft.  Previous class battleships like USS North Carolina had 9 16-in 45 cal guns in three turrets.

Of course a museum ship would not have live bags of powder.  1,900lb shells sure for display.

114 102 I woke up this morning with a horrible soreness below the knee. After a jog in the afternoon, it was at mid-calf. Now that I've seen Ted onscreen, I pray that it's Deep Vein Thrombosis to end my misery. Posted by: Sedentary Oscar Meyer at February 24, 2013 10:24 PM (I88Jc) Come on it had a duck named James Franco, and the coke-induced Mexican restaurant bit was shot perfectly.

It's not complicated. The trick is doing it quickly and not detonating the charge as it's rammed home.

118 Shit, just listened to the original H5O theme. Forgot about the screeching out of tune clarinets. Those need to go too. I always wanted to re-arrange that tune, maybe I'll get around to it with all this free time.

120 BlackOrchid: Familiar with why Ms Dagny bailed. Is there anything we can do to lure her back, or is that pretty much in the Ewok's furry paws?

As in Angle Saxon? Or did somebody die?

125 Angel, but I screwed it up. It's a phrase from a Gibson novel, a quiet pause in a dingy bar. I was just covering for pixy's hanging up the blog, but fumbled

I mean, who would have suspected that museum ship still have live 15 shells, and cordite bags aboard.

Cordite? A bit anachronistic, no? Any cell phones?

130 128 Jay Guevera,

yes it's true...

I can forgive his era for being Donk...you could be a JFK donk or a scoop jackson...

still blowing the donks after Clennis....

"no"

Sven, I've got no problem with JFK or Scoop Jackson Donks, because back then - unlike now - Dems were patriotic Americans, who differed from Republicans only in relatively minor matters (e.g., whether to raise the minimum wage). Recall that JFK basically started our involvement with Vietnam (to halt Communist aggression), and even LBJ ginned up an excuse (Gulf of Tonkin incident) to go after the Reds. (Can you imagine that happening now?)

I once burned a liberal online by attributing a JFK quote to Rush Limbaugh. He disdainfully dismissed the quote as "typical of a right-wing nut job." I then informed him that the quote came from JFK ...

132 Cordite? A bit anachronistic, no? I sit corrected. Google reveals it was guncotton, nitro-cellulose, in 55 or 110lb bags.

135 Sorry, Jay, but JFK initiated government unions, increased the role of government in the economy, called for (and got, posthumously) voting and civil rights biases, and was neatly turned by the communists. I was around for that. You can't get that shit past me. Try Grover Cleveland on for size, in search of your good-old Democrat. Any since the dawn of progressivism (and most of the repubs too FWIW) have been no friends to the old republic.

I'm with ya, and am no fan of JFK (the Irish answer to TFG), but my point was that he'd be in the right wing of the Republican Party today. Liberals who invokes him today would shit if they actually read any of his speeches.

I'm inclined to believe that his failings vis a vis the Reds arose less from sympathy toward them than naivete, as he was only in his early 40s at the time, and totally inexperienced (sound familiar?).
