In Other RNC News....Ban On CNN/NBC Debates Passes
— DrewM

NBC and CNN can have their Hillary shows or they can have GOP debates.

Top RNC leaders voted unanimously on a resolution stating that the national party will not partner with the networks nor sanction any primary debates they plan to sponsor and broadcast. (Read a full copy of the resolution below.)

Cable and broadcast television networks have sponsored and produced dozens of presidential primary debates during the recent presidential election cycles, often partnering with state parties or other political organizations in order to draw candidates to the televised events. During the 2012 cycle, top networks sponsored at least 20 debates that stretched from May 2011 to February 2012; CNN hosted seven debates, while NBC News, CNBC or MSNBC hosted four.

The networks do not need the permission of the RNC to host such debates, but the resolution approved Friday likely will prompt state party officials and other conservative organizations to not sponsor, sanction or attend any debates hosted by NBC or CNN and thus keep candidates from attending.

The last bit is the rub. The RNC really can't control this unless...they are willing to penalize states/candidates that have unapproved debates. The odds of that actually happening are fairly low.

The big penalty would be delegates. State parties hate that because it's a fun time and important people go to the national convention and state officials want to be important so they won't agree to dock each other's votes. Even if say the SC GOP was to hold a debate on CNN, people in Iowa won't vote to dock their delegates because next time it could be them. No one will want to set the precedent that the national committee can boss around the states that way.

As for candidates, if you're a 3rd tier guy who isn't getting any traction yet, you'll go because you're not worried about losing delegates you can't get unless you make a splash in a debate (think Newt and Santorum last time). You're going to go and dare the RNC to punish you and your theoretical delegates. But first you have to get them and that means air time.

Maybe it'll lead to a compromise on moderators, though I doubt VERY IMPORTANT NEWS ORGANIZATIONS will be willing to let a party (other than the Democrats) be seen as making editorial decisions for them.

One thing I don't like about it is plays into this narrative that Hillary is something to be feared. I bet these shows tank. Republicans are spending far to much time fretting about this woman.

Keep a few things in mind about her...

She was inevitable in 2008. And then she wasn't.

She's a terrible candidate. Other than hardcore liberals and Team Girl Power, a lot of people just don't like her.

The Obama people (staff and hardcore supporters) HATED her. remember she represented the ugly past of compromise and triangulation. They wanted the real deal lefty God. Do you really think she's going to get to bask in the reflective glow of Obama?

Biden's going to run too. He's not going to win and he's not going to be the darling of the Obama left but he and his surrogates will leak plenty of news about how Hillary badly served the One True Democratic God. She's not going to stroll to the nomination as the rightful inheritor of the Obama mantle without getting bloodied in the process.

There are all these stories about how no one will run if Hillary! gets in. Bull. Some obscure lefty with a new and exciting story will jump in and Democrats will fall in love with the shiny new toy. Hillary! may run and she may get the nomination but it won't be by acclimation and she won't be unblemished heading into the general.

It's good to see the GOP call out the media in any way but stop building Hillary! up as if she's Ronald Reagan in 1984. Act like you're happy to have her run, even if you aren't. Don't psych yourself out of the game before it even starts.

8 I don't interpret this as the RNC saying Hillary is all powerful.  On the contrary, they're acknowledging that CNN and NBC apparently think she needs an image booster and refusing to do business with organizations that would do something that nakedly partisan.

20 I think it's a moot point for D vs. R debates anyhow. That leverage probably exists for whoever is leading in the polls. If the Dem candidate is up by 10, I'm not sure the Republican candidate has much to lose by agreeing to a debate on CNN/etc.

The recent hit piece on the Clinton Library fund in the New York Times???  First salvo in the war between the Clinton and Obama wings of the Democrat party.

The Obama cabal has lied its way into power, and now believes (after getting a NOBODY like Obama elected twice) that they can control the election.... and get anyone elected...

Look for Susan Rice... Michele... Holder.... someone from that group to start making moves....

People really don't grasp how much appeal Hillary has to women voters.  It's tribalism, sure, but it's just the Obama/African-American phenomenon on a less extreme, but broader-based, scale.

It's not like they'll have much choice. The Party of Obama has no heir apparent, other than Slow Joe, and nobody's taking him seriously. For them, it's work with Hillary or go home to Chicago: and they're not about to do that.

As for Hillary, recall that wrote her thesis on Saul Alinsky and helped to prosecute Richard Nixon: she has an inner Leftist that she will be delighted to let run free, especially if it gains her the support of an organization that will carry her into the Oval Office.

The RNC should simply state to all networks: we'll decide on the moderator(s), format, set, candidates, etc., and you can broadcast it, or not. Broadcast television is far from the only game in town these days anyway.

The RNC really needs to get out of "please, sir, may I have another" mode.

Posted by: bonhomme at August 16, 2013 10:40 AM (4QSOR)

134 Frankly, I think this was a great move: (1) The base likes it. We're tired of being pushed around by an MSM that doesn't even pretend to have objectivity anymore. (2) The debates last time were awful and most of it was CNN's and NBC's partisanship. (3) Who really wants to be the RINO douche who goes on an enemy network? I wouldn't. Maybe Christie, but that guy is going to alienate his own campaign staff if he runs. He's a jerk to everyone who doesn't bring him some donuts. (4) CNN and NBC news have made it abundantly clear that they don't like this move AT ALL. And no wonder. I've said it a million times: The networks need the debates, the candidates don't need the networks. (5) Lower-tiered candidates would prefer to have a Daily Caller debate or a National Review debate or a debate on a local news station (I guess the ban does not apply to independent NBC affiliates?) (6) They could always cancel the biopics. Note that they're not even suggesting that. On this I actually have more sympathy for NBC. They have a purported "entertainment division" even though that division seamlessly sent Alec Baldwin over to the "news" network. There's no excuse for CNN to have an elaborate production like this.

How is it that I have driven my entire life (minus about six years or so) in Maryland -- and particularly 495, 270, and 95 -- and yet have never encountered these sorts of retard drivers?

For my money Minneapolis has some of the worst drivers I've ever seen.  And possibly the most confusing fucking highway system in the continental United States.  I swear to god it was intentionally constructed that way by surly, insular Scandihoovians to keep "outsiders" alienated and confused.

Anyone who's local to the Twin Cities (or has experience there) care to confirm?  I'm not talking about the HASSLE of driving -- rush hours on the Dan Ryan in Chicago or the I-270 spur off of 495 in Maryland are easily more nightmarish in terms of traffic jams than anything I've found in Minneapolis -- I'm talking about the mind-bogglingly nonsensical layout and naming of the roads themselves.  Not even just the highways (though I love the fact that I-35W North and I-35W South are REAL THINGS, and that they're not even remotely the most confusing part about the highways) but the normal street names.

If people who were hired to write and edit articles on politics are so unaware of the subject of their supposed expertise, what chance are other subjects covered better?

Drew, I don't think you understand the 2016 dynamics in play. For one thing, the Democrats don't need a winning candidate. What they need is a plausible candidate, someone convincing enough to make the public believe it is possible their candidate defeated his or her Republican opponent in a close election. For example, the national village idiot, Joe Biden, is not plausible. We could beat Biden with even our most unappealing prospect, Rick Santorum. Hillary, on the other hand, has an aura of inevitability, largely thanks to the combined efforts of the MSM and the DNC. No one would question a Hillary victory or suspect it was fixed, especially in a close election.

I'm personally convinced the Democrats are not going to give up power it has taken them decades to attain as the result of a free and fair election. Hopefully I'm wrong.

160 Anyone who's local to the Twin Cities (or has experience there) care to confirm?

Honestly I didn't mind driving in Minneapolis.  It didn't have the same "we're all going to die" quality that even surface streets in MD often generate, and the road naming isn't *that* odd.  The 35E/W split also exists in other cities, and the basic NE/NW/SE/SW grid pattern is as regular as any other major city, at least on the Minneapolis side.  Downtown St. Paul, yes, is a layout clusterfuck.

Never have.  I'll have to go sometime soon.

Eh, we just hire Mexicans like everyone else around here.  They show up in their big truck and do their work during the day while I'm at work.  Come home, the lawn's been mowed and everything's cool.

Do the landscaping myself.  Have a massive yard in front and my backyard has a sloping hill and a large forest/creek area that lends itself to some picturesque work w/the deck.

Eh, troyriser's just a little jumpy, and incorrect in this case.

You, OTOH, are a "conspiracy nut" and one of the biggest non-assets around here.

Why do you keep parachuting in to randomly insult me in this thread, BTW?  We're talking about driving, roads, highways, etc.  You're grinding your own weird personal axe.

166 Bugs aren't the only thing they're fucking out in Carroll County. Why in god's name would you want to spend time out in an area that even God gave up on long ago?

Carroll County has some charms: it leans Republican, the Westminster branch of the MVA is the most polite, helpful, and courteous government agency I've ever done business with, and I couldn't find a place closer to the I-83 corridor with reasonable rents in 2011.

They're going about this all the wrong way.  The media will just say "okay, your debates are irrelevant anyway, so we'll go ahead with our Hilary Hagiography."

Better to just do the debates our own way.

This is too much like "taking your dolls and going home."  Better to just exclude the media as if they're total pissants.  THEN, if they whine about it, just dismiss their bitching on the grounds that the media is nothing more than a PR wing of the Democratic party.  Cite, as evidence, the Hilary movies, Candy Crowley's debate 'performance', etc.

Yeah, Democrats cheat at elections. That's why any Repub candidate can't just win, he has to win beyond the margin of fraud.

"Stop building Hillary! up as if she's Ronald Reagan in 1984. Act like you're happy to have her run, even if you aren't. Don't psych yourself out of the game before it even starts."

Exactly.

Hillary had no record of accomplishments as a lawyer.

The only big initiative she has as First Lady (health care) was a flop and will look like even more of a flop once Obamacare has kicked in.

Her record as a Senator is... well, can you name anything she's known for?   Any piece of legislation?   Any important policy initiative?

She lost her last Presidential bid to an unproven nobody named Barack Obama.

She was a terrible Secretary of State and her tenure will look even worse as the Obama Administration's foreign policy implodes.

She'll be 73 on election day... four years older than Reagan was when he was first elected.

She's not charismatic and, in fact, is humorless and shrewish.

She has incredible baggage from the Clinton Era.

I suspect that the Clinton Global Initiative story in the NYT is just the first in many about the shady financial deals the Clintons have been into since 2000, things that will give Republicans the opportunity to say "Whitewater" a few thousand times.

Etc., etc., etc.

In short, where Jeb Bush would be a great candidate if he weren't named Bush, Hillary Clinton would be a rotten candidate if she weren't named Clinton.

171 Hillary(!) has the general appeal and personal warmth of John McCain. She should be as easy to beat as Obama should have been. SecState and US Senator look good on a resume, but only if no examination of her record takes place. It won't, of course. The Republican nominee has to go on the attack and go for the jugular. Yeah...that'll happen.

I disagree. While the media has and will continue to perform copious political fellatio and Obama gravy swallowing, they just *aren't* as keen on political cunnilingus of Hillary. The 2008 primary was eye-opening in that respect.

Of course, they will back the Demunist candidate in the general. But I would NOT count on DemSM lockstep primary support of Hillary in 2016.

And I think there was at least one district that recorded more votes than there were registered voters Parts of Ohio and PA went 120% for Obama with NO Romney votes. Aside from 1 poll worker and 1 nun who got busted, I haven't heard anything. But its good that alot of states are putting in the Voter ID laws. That'll help a little. Now if only we could eliminate mail and early voting.

181

All of this talk is moot unless we have a strategy to flip at least one of the Gore 2000 states. Wisconsin and Pennsylvania look most salivating.

So who delivers? And not "most electable", actually has a route to win them? Or to win Iowa, or Maine, or Michigan, or Minnesota, or any of the other states we've simply conceded along the way.

We are never going to see a non-Democrat in the White House again unless we see the red/blue/purple map change in the non-Democrat's favor. The strategy to get 50+1% works when you are averaging over 200 electoral votes per cycle as a baseline. It fails utterly when you are trying to "win back" states like North Carolina, Virgina, and Florida, not to mention Colorado and Ohio.

We have conceded so much there is no viable option for us until there is a route back through the upper Midwestern states or the northeast.

That doesn't require a RINO. It requires someone worth voting FOR as opposed to "not-X"

182 DrewM: "Act like you're happy to have her run, even if you aren't." Oh, I'm doing the opposite. I act like I dread her as the inevitable next President, when in fact I hope they nominate her, because we can win against her. Why? It should be a matter of policy, but really it comes down to how much less she connects with broad (i.e., beyond the base) audiences. The labored obviousness of it - "ah ain't no ways tahrrd yet." You wrote, "a lot of people just don't like her." Remember then-candidate Obama? "You're likeable enough, Hillary." It drives you and me nuts, but a lot of people want to love Obama no matter how badly he screws up, no matter how unpleasant a man he actually turns out to be. With Hillary! the true believers are going to be wailing about how unfair it is that more people don't recognize how awesome she is.

Posted by: JPS at August 16, 2013 12:23 PM (g11mv)

183 One small thing we could do is stop pluralizing you and me, as in "protect OUR freedom." People generally give two shits about other people's freedoms. Personalize everything. "Protect YOUR freedoms." "Stop them from stealing YOUR money." "Congress voted themselves a pay raise, why shouldn't YOU? Support Fair Tax [or flat tax... you get the idea]!"

And not just sometimes. Personalize every talking point.

Posted by: jwpaine @PirateBallerina at August 16, 2013 12:38 PM (/lWM8)

184 Hilary will get the nomination, and Hilary will most likely be our next president. The prospect of another Clinton in the White House is quite disturbing but this is the most likely outcome of the next presidential election. Besides, with half the people in this country actually believing that the Republican Party is the party of racists, homophobes, and women haters it's unlikely we will be able to get too far until the brand itself is revitalized. Hilary will win, and it will be a repeat of the Obama campaign tactics except this time any criticisms will be answered with the cries of "Woman Hating Pig" instead of the 'ol stand by of "Raaaaccciiiiiisssssssttt!"
