— Ace I avoided this show for years because of Murphy Brown. Murphy Brown was "about politics," but the extent of the "politics" was insipid references to people who were in politics.
Like, "Gee, I haven't been this drunk since I did tequila shooters with Gary Hart!"
Wocka wocka. You mentioned a name I've read in a newspaper. How political.
I assumed the Big Bang Theory would be exactly like that, but swapping out political references for geek ones -- "Gee, I haven't been this drunk since I did tequila shooters with Gary Gygax!"
But it's not. It's actually smartly written, with some genuine care put into it. Apparently they have an on-staff scientist vetting all the science -- all the formulas, all the references, all the scientific analogies -- that appear on the show.
And the geek stuff is almost all stuff geeks actually talk about (or at least have thought about). Plot holes in movies, time-travel paradoxes, superhero continuity issues. Even when they talk about something that hasn't actually been a topic of geek conversation -- like Raj's contention that mummies are no different than zombies, except with respect to one minor fashion choice -- it's at least in the ballpark of a Real Geek Topic.
I wanted to mention it because last night's show, which should be on demand if you have that service, was a pretty good entry point for people who don't watch the show. It's a solidly above-average episode, if not really in the top ten,* and requires almost no prior knowledge to enjoy -- except, basic idea: Four geeks, three Ph.D. scientists in physics and one engineer, are friends and work at the same university (CalTech, I think); three of them have girlfriends.
The episode is called "The Bakersfield Expedition." Should be the most recently aired one. Or: Thanks to MamaAJ, it's available online right here.
It has a killer punchline at the end I keep repeating to myself. I was going to try to explain the line, but realized how ridiculous it is to try to explain a line that depends 90% of the actress' delivery.
The line's near the end, by the way. The helium-voiced blonde Bernadette says it from behind a closed door. You'll probably know it when you hear it.
Bizarrely, this episode has garnered minor geek controversy by claiming that girls don't read comic books. Online geek-girls dispute that. Whatever -- the girls on the show are not geeks (except for one, and she's not so much a geek as she is socially inept) and they don't read comic books generally.
Damned geeks. Let's kick them out of their frat house and take it for our own.
* All the tip-top episodes star Sheldon, who is both the show's standout actor as far as comic talent and the character written with the most abundant comic potential -- he's sort of Stewie from Family Guy, but with intense OCD and Asperger's.
I think in later seasons they try not to feature him too much and make it a more balanced show where everyone's featured fairly equally; and the rest of them are pretty good and all, but seriously, Sheldon's the star. He's the Kramer, the Stewie, the Fonz.
This one has only moderate Sheldon content but is a good example of the show giving good lines to the other characters.

I also thought it would be the usual Hollywood crap but then my daughter said 'watch it, you'll like it'. It took me a few episodes until I got into it and now think it's the best thing on television, after Jeopardy, of course.

A guy who used to be my boss (and was French) was extremely similar to Sheldon certain mannerisms. The show is very funny to me. Several of my present co-workers agree that Sheldon was like the guy we used to work for.
And he was actually an OK guy, it's just that he looked like Sheldon and had a lot of the same mannerisms.
There are a lot of episodic aspects to the show, like when Penny has a different boyfriend, and their interactions (the boyfriend is invariably dumb).
When Sheldon the genius tries to learn to drive. When Sheldon broke up with his equally nerdy and brilliant girlfriend and started to adopt cats, and his mother (a normal person) solved the dilemna.
Very funny show watching people written to be well above normal IQ struggle with life. It grows on you.

Agreed as well.
Oddly, I think Ace did hit it close to the mark with his initial Murphy Brown critique. It's more scientific name dropping and ridiculous stereotype enhancing than anything.
Which somewhat annoys me as it's not exactly better than the absolute dearth of 'mainstream' science in the cultural zeitgeist since the 1970s as you're just reinforcing silly stereotypes of what intelligent people act like (hint: they don't), the virtual caste/niche roles they occupy, how they interact with 'normal' people. Hint: they're not laughing with you...
It's kinda sickening, besides, the correlation between IQ/g and how closely you map to how the pukes on this show act is not what you think it is.
Richard Feynman would smack anyone on the cast.

There was a point a couple seasons ago where Sheldon came very, very close to jumping the shark, and I mean that in the closest sense of the term possible. The charm of the character is when he's set against everyday society, but suddenly the writers started to just make him do Weird Things and gave him a catch phrase. I was thrilled they saw it and pulled him back.
In that sense, I think last weeks ep was even better-- Sheldon vs. his university's human resources dept. It was in a way a parody of PC crap.
My quibble with the show is that the characters are into *every possible geeky thing*-- Star Trek AND Star Wars AND kites AND superheros AND LOTR and... Usually geeks are only into a couple things. You just don't have the time and energy to fulfill every single stereotype.
But yes, the best sitcom on the air right now.

Engineers describe themselves as "engineers" so that the layperson won't feel obligated to pursue small talk into their "work" since even a baseline description of their job entails is likely a 10 minute explanation to a layman let alone any current projects they might be working on.
e.g.
q: So what do you do?
a: I'm an engineer.*
q: Oh. You like doing that?
a: Sure
q: How about them 49ers
*Translation. I work in a field that requires you to be able to resist LD80 boredom just to discuss it, and have gotten through at least 3D Calculus to understand a casual conversation about it.
It is an effective conversation stopper.

I stopped reading Chuck Lorre's end titles for each show a long time ago, however. His stupid liberal egotistical ravings ruined the ending of many an episode for me; I ignore them now and all is well.
"he also looks down on experimental physicists and astrophysicists for that matter."
And his own girlfriend even, who is a biologist. The episode where he is forced by the university president to take a vacation and he inflicts himself on her lab is great.

BBT is well-done, no doubt, but search out a little show from a few years back called "Stella" and give it a try. It's like.....imagine a post-modern, slightly-narcissistic version of the Stooges, as directed by Patrick Bateman. The Raking Leaves skit is a good entry point to the series, with jokes that work for reasons no earthly joke could or possibly even should. If you enjoyed the brief run of The State, you'll love this.

Does she act when she gets on set? Does she drastically change cloths, change mentality, change her mental outlook, interactivity, behavior when she's at work on the set? Because according to most of you, she should just be herself.
Many of you even knew this at some level as you knew the facts, but still preferentially buy into the caricature as it's preferable to your mental paradigm

No, it's because the show sucks. I'm sorry to not sugar-coat it.
Adam Corolla's book, In 50 years we'll all be chicks, was one that I got in an ePub trade with some friends. Just read it and loved many of the points he was making about how we're sold shitty, sub-par media by the industry and we just eat this crap up because we're told it's good -- be it overtly or tacitly.
Watch the BigBangTheory-clip-with-no-laughtrack posted previously (http://tinyurl.com/b4zgotd) and tell me that's funny. Sheldon's a douche, a bad caricature which trades off the same one 'joke' of what a smart person acts like, ad infinitum.
Now, Spinal Tap, which Ace just mentioned was fucking brilliant. It was a one-off movie which was whitty and clever with some distinction and range -- it wasn't the same repetitious drum-beat of the same thing, over and over, for 8 seasons.

Who knows. Maybe I am. But maybe, I just wanted more from that show rather than what they delivered. I thought Seinfeld was plodding and predictable after the first season though so I'm not an easy sell. But the show seemed to quickly lapse into repeated jokes using the exact same set up. I'd rather watch Supernatural. I get different chicks every episode, and at least 4-6 new monsters a season. The relationship between Dean and Sam is boring now, but at least interesting stuff is going on.
When I watch TBBT once the geek jokes wear out the plot material is pretty thin and oh, why would I watch a series about geek living once the jokes got old?

Lowandslow was picking at me once and said 'wow you have done a lot x and y and z" thinking i was walter mitty and no I am not walter mitty I got hurt my 1st tour in the army and had my dream die so I drifted from job to job while in school until i found the field I loved.....why?
because oddly if you don't give enough of a shit about your job to embrace it and consider it your greatest praise to the maker you probably need a new job.
Seinfeld never came across as having terror at not having material, elaine was blase, jason Alexander has me wanting to lack his 'chute in the doritos commercial, the soup nazi should be drawn and quartered....
it just was retetitive and was funny "because" well forgive me I have laughed at comedy from the turn of last century 'til today and somewhere around 1994 a lot of shit just went 'what the fuck" so far as comedic, musical, and cinematic content went.
When i was maybe 8 years old my dad took me on one of the weekend visits to a motorcycle show....

Seems like there's a number of shows that have come out in recent years that have had a great core idea, but then they become lame as they regress into being a politically-correct soap opera. Royal Pains and Eureka come to mind.
This show seems to avoid that crap, on the whole. It does have a bit of a soap opera element, with Leonard and Penny's Romea and Juliet thing being dragged out forever in an "on again", "off again", "on again", "off again", infinitum fashion, but it works. Beyond that, I would only complain that it might be a bit too obsessed with sex. But "sex sells", so what do you expect?
Two interesting observations: (1) At first I thought the show was about the Romeo and Juliet thing, but eventually I realized that it was really aboput Sheldon. Further, that Sheldon is an old-fashioned superhero, of sorts (even down to the detail of old-time superheros being asexual). At one point Sheldon literally uses his "superpower" to save Leonard's life. Usually, liberal shows make fun of the gifted and accomplished; maybe it's "OK" here because he works for a university.
(2) The portrayal of Raj's family as being racist is interesting. Historically, it's only "OK" in Hollywood for whites to be portrayed as such. Maybe they get away with it because said family is rich. I guess they needed some way to portray the rich folks as evil, but it still seems like a departure. Even so, it's portrayed as comedic when Indians are racist, but if you had a racist white person in there, it would be portrayed as worse than Hannibal Lecter.

Yes, it is perhaps unbelievable that they would be interested in all those different fandoms, but they have plenty of disposable income and I've known plenty of people who pursued multiple interests. RPGs, comics, movies, cosplay, computer games, miniatures, anime?
Without breaking a sweat.

I've always found it kind of sweet.

Its hard to believe that the series is entering its sixth year. It has yet to lag in its story lines (like Friends did after 5 yrs) and I think its because for the first time in a sitcom what people do for a living is an active part of the story line.
Chuck Lorre produces the series (2 1/2 Men fame) and its obvious that Charlie Sheen torpedoed his former series as it now runs BEHIND BBT where it used to lead it in.

I guess part of it is that they screwed up the geography so badly. The area in question is very familiar to me. Vasquez Rocks is close by enough that we take the dogs there. The area depicted is a fair hike within the park, and it isn't a severe walk from the entrance to residential streets and businesses.
The apartment where Sheldon and Leonard live is less than a mile from my primary employer's office. It's about 40 miles from Pasadena to the exit for Vasquez Rocks. But why would they be on the 14 if they were going to Bakersfield? The most direct route is the 210 to the 5, then turn left when you get to Bakersfield, depending on where in the city you're going. There is the 99 freeway if you're going to central Bakersfield or the 58 from there if you're going to the east side.
Everybody making that show lives less than 150 miles away. None of them knew the territory? And you'd have to be a really desperate fan boy to willingly go to Bakersfield for a con where there are so many events closer by. In my whole life the only time I've gone to Bakersfield without money being involved was when my brother had a heart attack and the nearest hospital was in Bakersfield.

I've watched it almost from the beginning and challenge anyone on geek cred.
I know a lot of Cal Tech alumni and at any given time you can find a Sheldon lurking around there. They don't last long because the most accomplished people there are actually pretty good at picking up women. Some of them are scarily good at it and caused stunned amazement all around when they married.
The place where the show falls down is the lack of reference to real life geek gatherings well known among fannish types. If I were writing for that show I'd slip in at least one LASFS reference every season, just to give respect to the homies.

They have at least mentioned Comic-Con which is probably the best you'll get, because they aren't making the show for geeks only, which I think they would stick in even more of those sorts of references if it were the case.

I rather doubt Galecki was ever dating Sara Gilbert, unless it was at studio encouragement before she came out as a lesbian. From what I heard she was an incredibly abrasive person that was obsessively preachy about whatever new cause she picked up, like trying to make vegetarianism forced on the entire production's catering. I suspect this was tolerated solely because it was essentially her character.

But ComiCon is now widely known and referenced on shows like Entertainment Tonight because a lot of trailers get their premiere there. So it's a name known to housewives in Des Moine.
They could play the geek cred and still do it so the audience wouldn't be lost. Sometime the show seems so distanced form its supposed setting you'd think it was being shot in a studio in Manhattan.

I think that comment was referring to the fact that on the show Roseanne she was the younger daughter and Galecki was her boyfriend on that show. I think part of why she was cast on The Big Bang Theory.
Posted by: buzzion at January 11, 2013 08:38 PM (GULKT)
Roseanne was Chuck Lorre's first big hit. So he has a longstanding relationship with the cast. Some of them are dead or too big to do a TV guest shot, or just too loathsome to invite anywhere near, especially Roseanne herself. Obviously Lorre likes Laurie Metcalfe.
Cybill was another Lorre show, thus Christine Baranski doing the recurring role of Leonard's mother. Likewise for 2.5 Men, where a cavalcade of actors from past Lorre shows have turned up over the years. Alicia Witt was really smoking in her guest shot.
