Injectable Foam Expands Inside Wounds, Stopping Bleeding
— Ace

One thing I liked in Dredd (among numerous things) was the tire-repair-style gel he used to plug his wound (followed by a quick stapling of it via a medical-staple gun).

Not a super novel idea. But neat.

It's so un-novel, in fact, it's real, or close to it.

You can tourniquet an arm or leg but you can't tourniquet a headwound, or neckwound, or chestwound, or gutwound. Only a surgeon can dig in, find the ruptured artery, and clamp it.

Thus, an injectable foam might soon stop bleeding from such injuries (long enough to get the wounded man to a surgeon, at least).

To address this issue, Arsenal Medical in Watertown, Massachusetts, has designed a substance that fills the abdominal cavity and forms a solid foam that can slow internal bleeding. It starts with two liquids. “Mixing those two liquid components causes a chemical reaction that drives the material throughout the abdominal cavity,” says Upma Sharma, head of the foam-technology research at Arsenal. The idea is that the foam would put enough pressure on the site of the injury to slow bleeding for up to three hours so that the soldier could be transported to a hospital. There, a surgeon would remove the block of foam and tend to the soldier’s wounds."

Based on my reading, that's only for gut-wounds, but I guess they'll move on to the other sorts of wounds eventually.

Via Instapundit.

More: Unvetted, but tsrblke sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

It works for gut wounds, because those are the bulk of wounds involving internal bleeding with lots of open space and are really dangerous.

The other two areas you see a lot of internal bleeding that's dangerous are brain (not a lot of workable space) and Lungs (lots of workable space...that's used for breathing.

You do get internal bleeding in other places (arms, legs, etc.) that's bruising, it's sometimes dangerous, sometimes not, but as pointed out you can always sacrifice the leg/arm/whatever, to save the body (not so much with "everything below the waist."

For external bleeding (i.e. cuts, slashes gashes) you have the tourniquet option for really large damage or various styles of things like high-tech band-aids and medical glue for small to medium sized things.

Unnecessary?

What if you don't have time to bleed?

20 We already have bandages that will expand in large wounds to stop bleeding.  And they require surgical removal.  But they don't work for arterial wounds.  Plugging those is about more than just sealing the exit hole.  You would need to coagulate this particular artery somehow.  Very hard with it under pressure.

"Hope it works and does not cause bigger problems than it is meant to solve."

If the history of  military medical tech is any indication, it'll do both.   Then smart people will take those lessons and make adjustments.  Example:  Quik Clot powder was a similar Big Deal when it first came out, but it often caused burns and gummed up wounds for the surgeons to have to clean out.  You didn't want it getting loose and blowing in your eyes either.

It has since evolved to the point where it's impregnated into pressure bandages at the correct rate to avoid all those problems.  It's also saved hundreds and hundreds of  our guys and gals in the sandbox.

Yes, the article I read said that the tampons were used more on through and through shots in the arm or thigh because they are the perfect size and shape to fit the wound and they are designed, to put it delicately, absorb the same sort of fluids.  You put one tampon in the entrance wound, one or two in the exit wound, and put a pressure bandage around the whole thing until the injured could be treated by medical personnel.

87 Sock off,

Wow a shout out update.
Erg, cool! FWIW, my human experience is fairly limited, but anatomy being fairly similar across species, I have dissected more mice than the vast majority of you have seen and I've killed an order of magnitude more than I've dissected. (And I've caused internal bleeding a few of those mice and would have loved to have some of this foam.)

I've also injected large amounts of water into the abdominal cavity to flush for macrophages. (It's really weird when you do it, you strip the skin and fur leaving only the smooth muscle, then inflate the thing like a balloon.)  Lacerated a few livers that way.

88 Yes, the article I read said that the tampons were used more on through and through shots in the arm or thigh because they are the perfect size and shape to fit the wound and they are designed, to put it delicately, absorb the same sort of fluids.

Yeah, the Israelis make good stuff. I bought one of those injured personnel carrying straps from them recently. It's one of those things that when you see it, you wonder why this wasn't thought of a thousand years ago.

You know, the Byzantine infantry used to wear a sort of harness over their armor, purpose unknown....Of course, in a hand-to-hand conflict with spears and swords, the need for dragging the wounded in the way we do now may not be present.

That version is a powder injector, not say a hypodermic. You have a small penetrating wound, you jam then business end of the injector into the wound as far as motivation and resistance to pain will get you, crush down the plunger, and your internal bleeding turns to internal quickcrete.

I bought steel plates for the armor. I figure the ERs will not be what they are today. Best to avoid any extra holes in the first place. But, yeah, for cuts, I think you have a good plan. Staples have to better than sewing up the wound with tread if you have to do it yourself.
