Insurance Industry: Obama's "Fix" Is Entirely Unworkable
— Ace

Earlier I wrote:

* Are insurers even interested in offering these policies given the other strictures of Obamacare? Bear in mind, they cannot charge the healthy any less than the desperately sick. So they, like Obama, need healthier people in these high-risk pools. (Obamacare essentially puts the entire country into a high-risk pool.)

So the insurance companies can offer these policies again... and the effect, I'm pretty sure, will be to drastically increase their own downside risk when they insure the uninsurable, and have fewer healthier people to tax to pay for the uninsurable.

So Obama may be certainly is attempting to engineer a situation in which he offers an odious, destructive deal to insurance companies, so that when they balk, he can say, "See? This is why we need Obamacare, and none of this is my fault."

Chris Wallace read this statement from the trade association of American insurance companies:

Changing the rules after health plans have already met the requirements of the law, Obamacare, could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for consumers. Premiums have already been set for next year, based on assumptions of when consumers will be transitioning to the marketplaces.

If now fewer younger and healthier people choose to purchase health coverage in the exchanges, premiums will increase, and there will be fewer choices for consumers.

They're talking about the Death Spiral.

The female anchor asked Wallace if Obama had consulted with the insurance agency. Chris Wallace scoffed, laughed at the question, asking her in return: At this late date, why would he start consulting?

"This Is A New Insanity:" So says a spokesman for New Jersey Health Insurance Underwriters.

Opening salvo in the battle for single payer ?

I am beginning to think; :no one is this stupid, are they ?

It's too late to chang policies or anythign at this point. The companies were depending on the asshole government to have this shit ready.

This is going to cost the taxpayers a shitload of money. I bet a bunch of the companies file suit. Obama is changing the law !

Posted by: The Jackhole at November 14, 2013 09:31 AM (nTgAI)

40 Here's my question, if the insurance companies can re-instate the prior individual plans can they then pull out of the exchanges and stop offering those plans since the only people on the exchanges will be the truly sick?  That is the play I would be looking at to keep my company solvent, but not sure if they are locked in to offering a plan to anyone for a year.

The chances of us retaining those past 2014 are slim at best because most of the Dems will think the danger is past and will revert the second elections are done with.

Let this be a teachable moment for big business, using government force to coerce people into becoming your customers will ultimately burn you. Immigration, Wall Street bailouts -- hell, if I remember right GE is the one that got the government to outlaw incandescent lights, since they didn't make them and made florescent ones. Enough, let them go broke. The only thing that infuriates me is that a partial bail out of the insurance companies was written into the law.

Working for the largest healthcare provider in the US - The Veterans Administration gives a stark lesson (if one still needs one) about Govt. run healthcare.

As of March 2013, 611,000 veterans were still waiting to recieve their benefits through the VA.  The VA was called before Congress and bitch slapped to reduce this backlog.

Today?  It is a mere 400,000 vets awaiting for their benefits.  A big 34% reduction in the back log.  This is waiting for Americans writ large.

183 what would be the best move at this point for conservatives or Republicans in general?

Let the Democrats "fix" it themselves so they can continue to own it.  Don't obstruct anything, just vote present and keep saying repeal is the only correct fix.

That way you can't accused of obstructing, but you don't get sucked into the trap of becoming a part owner of it either.

184 If the insurance execs really want to fuck JugEars over, they should walk out in front of a press conference and do two things.

One, have a guy walk out there with the binders containing the original healthcare bill as signed and then another bunch of guys after that with dozens of binders full of all the regulations drafted from the bill.

Let the press get a good long look at it and then ask the camera, "OK, asshole.  You stopped the employer mandate for a year and now this shit today.  Exactly which parts of this MFer are we supposed to follow?"

Would should have been begging Obama to throw us into the briar patch. Republicans can now propose legislation that on the surface seems to be helping but will only make the situation worse. The Upton bill is an example of just that. The fatal flaw with Obamacare is that it is so big, so all encompassing, that pulling out any one significant piece has a negative chain reaction throughout the law. Put off for a year forcing individuals to give up the plans they liked for more expensive plans? Ok. Just what do you think that is going to do to the risk pools that are now filled with nothing but high risk, previously uninsured people? Boom. Conservatives should be thrilled with where we are right now. This is the opportunity we have waited decades for. Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance!

I like to cross stitch and crochet.    That said, I'm not terribly good at either.  I drop stitches here and there, or miscount rows on the Aida, but I can usually cover up for any mistakes with a tweak here or there.

But then sometimes    I'll   look at what i'm working on and realize that I've been working the pattern on the back of the fabric, or I've been repeating the same round for the last thirty rounds instead of decreasing   fifteen rows   earlier, and that's just not going to work.   In those situations there's nothing for it but to unpick everything and start over.   Clean slate.    It sucks and it's time consuming and I hate it, but I usually don't make the same mistake again.

Obammycare     is   by far a bigger    clusterfuck of a miserable failure than even my worst attempts at amigurumi.      REPEAL.

268 …if the insurance companies can re-instate the prior individual plans can they then pull out of the exchanges and stop offering those plans since the only people on the exchanges will be the truly sick? That is the play I would be looking at to keep my company solvent… This is why Obama absolutely does not want to allow insurance companies to continue selling pre-exchange policies. My understanding of Obama’s “fix” is to let current policies continue, but any new policies need to be written under the exchanges. This means a dwindling pile of prior individual plans, year over year. If the Republicans are going to acquiesce to a fix, it has to be that the insurance companies can continue to sell non-exchange policies that are fully separate from the exchanges, and do not subsidize exchange policies. This will, as the press release stated, mean that exchange policies will rise even further in price more quickly than they otherwise would have; it will mean a reckoning with math sooner than the Democrats wanted it.

Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. Hagan in NC lost a double digit lead in one month. All that just happened despite a lefty msm. The msm is not exactly acting in a monolith fashion behind Obama right now. And other Dem politicians, the ones who aren't completely insane, are running from Obama as fast as they can. I would love to see the Dems make the case that the fix for government taking over most of health care and screwing it to a fare thee well is a complete takeover of government health care. 320 Something I haven't seen noted in the discussions are the strict controls placed on administrative costs for insurance companies.  Healthy people have very minimal claims contact with their insurer on an annual basis- rarely little more than a generic exam or routine cold.  Unhealthy people frequently have very complicated claims with multiple specialists who order frequent lab tests and scans to monitor their patients; all of which must be reviewed for proper coding and payment.  So, the more unhealthy folks in the pool - the more administrative handling each policy will require.
