Investigation Opened into Conductor of Derailed Spanish Train
— Ace

As you can imagine. Of the 247 passengers, 78 were killed.

The impact was so huge one carriage flew several meters into the air and landed on the other side of the high concrete barrier.

"We heard a massive noise and we went down the tracks. I helped get a few injured and bodies out of the train. I went into one of the cars but I'd rather not tell you what I saw there," Ricardo Martinez, a 47-year old baker from Santiago de Compostela, told Reuters.

The train driver was under formal police investigation, a spokeswoman for Galicia's Supreme Court told Reuters, without naming him. The train had two drivers and one was in hospital, the Galicia government said.

The driver took the sharp turn at a very high rate of speed-- 120mph. The speed limit was 80mph (which itself seems pretty fast). I don't see how anyone could blow through this turn at 120mph thinking he'd somehow stay on the tracks.

I think the drivers may have survived because there was nothing to slow the engine from skidding along the track on its side; they wouldn't have gotten the massively fast stoppage that could kill a man. But the cars behind them, the ones whose momentum was blocked by overturned cars, would have gotten the worst of it, the sudden stop that's little different than falling from 70 feet (or whatever the math works out to).

I'm really linking that as an excuse to relink the video of the derailment that @benk84 linked in the headlines. It's incredible, awful. It's not gory in the tape itself, as you see no human beings, but it's terrible in the imagination, as you can visualize in your mind what a crash of this speed could do to a human body.

Ace, the speeds from the Reuters story are 190kmph (120mph), and   80 kmph.

El Pais newspaper said one of the drivers told the railway station by radio after being trapped in his cabin that the train entered the bend at 190 kilometers per hour (120 mph). An official source said the speed limit on that stretch of twin track, laid in 2011, was 80 kmph.

80km/h is approximately 50mph.

27 and I saw the video. It looks like a car behind the engine slammed into something (perhaps tilted too far to one side) on the side. I would think that high speed trains are not meant to run at high speeds all the time, but I guess no one has figured out how to make sure trains stay within their limits.  And now that I think of it, is Spain really large enough to need trains that move that fast?
Can one imagine that, if a Repub Admin wanted to build high speed trains, the Dems would endlessly use this video to oppose it? Kind of like that pipeline that's supposed to every day carry 700,00 gallons of rocks?

I'd note ace, I've ridden the AVE before in Spain.

And although this is not the same set of trains, I am to understand that the Avelia is a variable high speed line.

The AVE had some pretty high tech in it designed to allow the train to take curves at high speed, I'm guessing the Avelia doesn't (hence the "variable" part)

I'd note that when I rode the AVE, and it banked, you could seriously feel it, and had to grab your drink lest it start to slide off your tray.

The speed limit for that corner, according to the Reuter's article you linked, is 50 mph (80 kmph). Not 80 mph. So if the train was doing 120 mph (190 kmph), as reported, then we are talking about the train being 140% over the speed limit instead of 50% over the speed limit.

93 Trains aren't supposed to leave the track. They have to stay on the track. They can't go anywhere that's not on the track.

Trains aren't dangerous at all. Just cost about 8x more per passenger mile than automobiles, and pollute at a much higher rate.

Very safe, but impossible to make a profit from. This has been true of pretty much every railroad since the early 19th century - railroads provided passenger service as a public-relations ploy and subsidized it out of the profits they earned from shipping freight.

One of the first "High Speed Rail" lines was the Hudson River Railroad built in the 1840s  to compete with the passenger boats - very cool little woodburning steam engines with huge spidery driving wheels that could go very fast (almost 50mph average run!) - but it lost money steadily until the Vanderbilts got ahold of it and incorporated it into the NY Central in 1869.

Yeah this does raise some questions about the train systems there.  You are right that there must have been some warning for the driver that he was going way too fast.

But the thing is, he wasn't just going a little too fast.  He was well over 2 X the speed limit for that turn.  Gross negligance.

And each train runs on a separate track.

Nevertheless they have drivers.

And they managed to crash into each other once (going around a curve, they both tilted together and hit.)

I'd note that there are driverless metro systems somewhere IIRC (it might even be Spain)  I think the concern is when you're dealing with a system that has to cross streets, you want someone there to pull the plug as needed in case of an unexpected situation.

At least in the US, the conductor is the train's commander (as a matter of fact, some held the title "captain" at least in the early days), so he tells the driver how fast to go, etc. I think that Ace is getting "driver/engineer" and "conductor" mixed up a bit, though. People talking about train automation need to keep in mind that these are trains that are running on legacy systems that predate computers by a lot.  Trains have been around in Europe for a long time.  Yes, they are upgraded all the time, and undoubtedly computers and automation play a much more important part than they used to, but these are still legacy systems, maintained either by the government, or by heavily-government-regulated business.  You can't expect state of the art for such a massive system.

If a train system was built from scratch *today*, then it could *probably* be fully automated.  But that isn't the case here.

If you accept Mass transit in general, there's a zone for which trains make sense.  For example, the train from St. Louis to Chicago takes about as long as driving and is cheaper than flying (and I get to do other things during the ride).

Much past that tough and the time/cost ratio starts to change pretty substantially.

An automated engine can be trusted to go at the recommended speed around turns, and distractions would be a non-factor.

---------

You still want a crew member, though.  You want to have at least one "live" authority-type on the train in case one of the passengers starts to cause problems.  Either the crew member can step in as the authority figure to reprimand the trouble-maker, or the crew member can call the cops to deal with them.

I ride the Gold Line in LA County occasionally, and everything is as automated as they can make it.  You buy a ticket from an automated machine, board the train without anyone to check your ticket, and the only crew member is the driver who sits at the front presumably to monitor the track and make sure that no one tries to cause trouble while the train is running.

However, the lack of someone to check your tickets doesn't mean that they're clueless about how people will abuse that.  The County Sheriff's Department routinely sends deputies down to stand at the platform exits and check the tickets of those who are leaving the train...

271 Here north of Baltimore we call it the rob and ride. Baltimore county had to build a police station at the Lutherville stop.

*nod*.  When I first got up here I briefly considered taking it to BWI, because that's a fairly annoying drive from anywhere north of 695.  Then I found out 1) unless it's rush hour, it's faster to drive and 2) "rob and ride".

Fair enough, and I did take the train from the burbs to downtown Chicago for a few months. As long as you caught the expresses, it wasn't bad time wise and cost wise vs. driving, especially when you include the parking fees.

I'm still not a fan in general.

Please! Everyone! Stop with the driver shit. Railroad locomotives do NOT have steering wheels. In the US they're called locomotive engineers or in the case of semi-automated systems, operators. One can't fucking drive a locomotive

In Britain they are called drivers, though, and we are discussing a European train. The term driver was applied to locomotive engineers before it did to automobiles. Also, the word "driver" just means someone who makes it go - there is nothing in the etymology to suggest that steering is a vital component.

277 This is the EXACT design of "high speed train" that California is currently building from SF to LA and spending countless billions on. I think a side effect of this Spanish disaster is further erosion of any lingering support for high-speed rail in California. It was promoted as "safer than flying," but as the video shows, it doesn't seem to be safer than flying at all. Just because you're on the ground doesn't mean you can't crash. And as with cars, the speed you're going when you crash is the primary factor in the likelihood of fatality. This Spanish train was only going 120mph at the time of the crash, but that's the slow part of the route -- it goes up to 180mph (or faster -- not sure) on the straightaways. I've taken these high speed trains in Europe several times and to be frank I'm just as nervous on them as I am on an airplane (i.e. pretty nervous). Once while rocketing through the French countryside we whizzed past two Middle-Eastern looking guys standing near the track just observing the train. They were right next to an area where the fence along the track has fallen over, so there was nothing stopping anyone from reaching the track. Right next to them was a pile of huge concrete chunks from a construction project. I thought to myself, "Nothing is stopping those guys from dragging a couple of those concrete chunks and putting them on the tracks right here at the beginning of a curve. Then they could just sit back and watch the carnage as the train's momentum does the rest." A very easy way to commit an act of terror -- no bomb required. Just a timetable, a pair of wire snippers, and a strong back. That's the downside of high speed trains no one wants to mention.

281 Palestinian leadership lauds infamous terrorist as peace talks loom with Israel Just as hopes emerge for new Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the official Facebook page of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah political party is lauding a convicted terrorist for killing 61 “Zionists” in a series of attacks. The two sides' perceptions of Abdallah Barghouti, the bomb-making mastermind behind the infamous 2001 Sbarro attack and at least four other suicide bombings, is as good a measure as any for how far apart they are. Arrested in 2003, Barghouti is serving 67 life terms in solitary confinement in an Israeli prison. But to the party that rules the West Bank, Barghouti is a hero. "The brave prisoner, Abdallah Barghouti, who has the longest [prison] sentence in the history of the Palestinian cause," reads the Facebook page, first reported on by Palestinian Media Watch. Through its social media presence, Fatah glorifies five of the suicide bombings Barghouti organized between 2000 and 2003, including the attack at a Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem that killed 15 people on Aug. 9, 2001. “This just underscores the questionable commitment to genuine peace by Palestinian organizations that some say are ready for peace.” - James Phillips, Heritage Foundation The bombings were “self-sacrificing activity” and “martyrdom-seeking operations,” according to the Facebook page. 201 People talking about train automation need to keep in mind that these are trains that are running on legacy systems that predate computers by a lot.

I've got some books from the '40s (if I look in the right boxes in my storage shed) that discuss automated systems that had been deployed *then* to deal with things like making certain trains don't get too close to each other or run red lights. I don't recall anything about enforcing speed limits, though...

289 Watching the video the mechanics of the incident are fairly obvious.  And a classic example of why you simply must slow a train either from the back, or along it's entire length equally.

Yes, the train entered the turn too fast.

As the engine went around the turn it slowed.  The cars behind did not slow as fast.  So you end up with a situation where the cars further back are effectively 'pushing' (trying to pass, really) the cars ahead of them.

The strong push from behind the front end of car immediately behind the engines to rise up and it's front trucks left the tracks, bringing the rest of the train with it.

Dismaying as it may be, it's true. I've seen it among my nieces and nephews. In my generation, getting your driver's license was one of the most intensely anticipated events of a teenager's life. OTOH, a lot of these kids are growing up very differently than I did.

By the time I was eight or nine years old, I could get on my bike and disappear for hours without any hysterics from my parents. As long as I didn't get in trouble or not show up for dinner, how I spent a summer day with nothing scheduled was entirely my business. This was pretty much unheard of for my siblings' kids. I don't think my nieces ever went more than a mile from home without adult supervision until they were well into their teens. Between that and the internet, is it any surprise they don't regard driving the same way we did?

FWIW, the  posted speed was 80 KH, which is 50 MPH  (might want  to fix that in the post).

The train was traveling at 190 KH (120 MPH), so the train took the curve at almost 2 1/2 time the posted rate of speed.

Anyone  who has ever studied transportation engineering - especially when it comes to trains - can tell you that those speeds are limited FOR A REASON.

300 Well, there is a fully automated train in the US and it is located...you guessed it...in Detroit, LOL. Called the People Mover, it is a window on the world of the city of Detroit, including many vacant boarded up buildings piled with trash. Very cost effective too...without subsidies, it would not exist as it costs .75 to ride, but actually costs close to $5 to maintain per mile. Cost-effectiveness and use[edit] The Mover costs $12 million annually in city and state subsidies to run.[9] The cost-effectiveness of the Mover has drawn criticism.[10] In every year between 1997 and 2006, the cost per passenger mile exceeded $3, and was $4.26 in 2009,[11] compared with Detroit bus routes that operate at $0.82[11] (the New York City Subway operates at $0.30 per passenger mile). The Mackinac Center for Public Policy also charges that the system does not benefit locals, pointing out that fewer than 30% of the riders are Detroit residents and that Saturday ridership (likely out-of-towners) dwarfs that of weekday usage.[12] The system was designed to move up to 15 million riders a year. In 2008 it served approximately 2 million riders. In fiscal year 1999-2000 the city was spending $3 for every $0.50 rider fare, according to The Detroit News. In 2006, the Mover filled less than 10 percent of its seats.[12] Among the busiest periods was the five days around the 2006 Super Bowl XL, when 215,910 patrons used the service.[13] In 2008, the system moved about 7,500 people per day, about 2.5 percent of its daily peak capacity of 288,000.[14][1
