IRS Apologizes For Targeting Tea Party Groups During The Election
— Gabriel Malor

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.

Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews.

Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong and she apologized while speaking at a conference in Washington.

I think the most amazing part of this story isn't that conservative groups were singled out. It isn't that the IRS even apologized. It's that about 50 journalists on twitter all just said the equivalent of "Wow, I can't belive that. I'd never even heard about that."

Iowahawk was talking about Benghazi when he wrote this, but it's one of those universal truths:

There's a lot unanswered questions here, not that I expect any journalists to show more than passing interest.

(1) When did the IRS malfeasance occur and when did it become public?
(2) Has anyone been disciplined for the IRS malfeasance. What are their names? What was the discipline?
(3) How did it happen that "low-level staffers" could cause such trouble?
(4) Why did no "high-level staffers" put a stop to it?
(5) How can this be prevented in the future?
(6) Which groups, specifically, were targeted?
(7) How much did the inappropriate targeting cost the groups?
( Are these the same staffers that are going to be working on Obamacare implementation?

That's a start. Oh, and, not to go all conspiracy theory on your asses, but isn't it nice that this story dropped on a Friday? Sooner than you think it'll just be old news.

Update: Glenn Greenwald (yes, that Gleen Grenwald) had a nice catch on Twitter. Last year, the NYTimes editorial board praised the IRS for targeting Tea Party groups:

These groups, which already have 501(c)(4) status, should be as thoroughly investigated as any Tea Party chapter applying for that tax exempt status. So should two other blatant offenders: the conservative American Action Network, a “social welfare” claimant reported by the Center for Public Integrity to have spent more than 80 percent of its expenditures on the 2010 elections; and Americans Elect, a third-party effort enjoying “social welfare” secrecy as it secures ballot space across the nation.

At the moment, the IRS press office is telling folks who call that they have no information about the targeting or even the apology.

If only we had  a group of people who were interested in the goings-on  of our government, and would talk to those  government   people. Then that group could  maybe tell us what they're doing, possibly  even    by writing it down on paper.

If they were really good at what they did, they might even charge people a nominal sum to read what they wrote.

Important  takeaways from this story:

-  This was done  by a bunch of low-level staffers in Cincinnati

-  None of the managers knew anything about it.

-  As  SOON as they found out, they put a stop to it

-  They're really sorry about that

-  All fixed, so there's nothing to see here

-  Move along, citizen

18 Pretty stupid of them to admit it. The standard corrupt-o-crat playbook starts with the rule of never admitting a damned thing.

What state is Cincinnati in?

Ohio.

What state was the most important for the Obama campaign to win in 2012?

Ohio.

Would it be useful to tie up staff and funds of conservative activist groups in 2012 in Ohio?

Yes.

Now, we don't know that they specifically targeted Ohio tea party groups.   Cincinnati, after all, is a central hub for the IRS, so they might have been targeting groups all over the area Cincinnati covers.

But, still.

Hmmmmm.....

That they released on Friday.

That they released on the Friday before Mother's Day weekend.

That they released during a week where there were a lot of competing news stories:  Benghazi, Jodi Arias, the Cleveland kidnapping.

Please, please, please, MSM, ask somebody at the IRS why this story was released today and if there was any collusion with the Obama White House on when the story would be released?

This is the same administration that we now know massaged the talking points on Benghazi.   Do you really think they wouldn't massage the message on a Watergate-level scandal about siccing the IRS on political opponents in the middle of an election?

And yet, we were constantly just told "you're making this up, there's no bias, this is all normal", and it definitely wasn't. It was a ridiculous level of harassment by the IRS, and as they didn't do the same to the Occupy Richmond group, it was obviously biased. (In fact, the Occupy Richmond even partnered with us in protest of the IRS, which was a unique and special cooperation...)

The typical midwestern response to extended loss of Democrat power is to go "Chicago"...

the Cleveland gang's influence and suborning malfeasance by SW Ohio donks is a relatively new phenomena in response to the GOP domination of the 90s and early 21st century.

The question becomes "what are we gonna do about it?"

108 Follow up question, the IRS isn't going to have anything to do with those "death panels" are they? Because that could be bad if they are so fond of targeting conservative groups.

188 I actually believe the "low-level" part, because that was always my gut assumption. Prototypical candidate--a female graduate of a second-tier college, perhaps of minority status, fully convinced that her blazing 105 IQ and mediocre college education/indoctrination were the height of wisdom, ready to finally say "enough was enough" as Progress! was finally made in this country, and those "Tea Party" folks getting corporate money and lying about it were about to meet their match, because she was on to them. "Time to get medieval on some butts, though, naturally, they won't get the prison time they truly deserve for falsely filing for tax exempt status. But they ain't fooling me." Now, naturally, I'm dealing in sterotypes, but then, so was the IRS. My guess is they truly believed that the Tea Party groups were fronts, because all "right-thinking" people think like they do, and if you go against the black race, you're naturally racist and/or a stooge of business. Once again, I'm dealing in stereotypes. My guess, though, is that the data would pass an 80% confidence interval test, if not higher. The basic problem with expansive government at all levels is that at some point you put hard-to-check Solomonic powers in the hands of a very average bureaucrat, because there simply will never enough Solomons to go around. I submit that causes problems--"The evil of banality".

247 The Internal Revenue Service inappropriately flagged conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. Apology? That ain't gonna cut it. Fire, Fine, and Prison Time is what every IRS personnel member "deserves" for illegal discrimination against any segment of our citizenry. Want a new law? Confiscate the personal property and bank accounts of IRS and ANY federal personnel employee abusing powers in office. Apply that responsibility against members of Congress, required to personally refund via confiscation of private property, investments and bank accounts for usurping unconstitutional powers via legislation as well as political policy. ...no one's holding their breath. But "apology" doesn't come close to being enough. This experience regarded elections. Remember that the IRS is the enforcer of ObamaCare. So when George W. Bush asked the IRS for a "kinder, gentler" work environment dealing with the citizenry, evidently, no law to show for it, to keep the IRS from monstrosity.

“That would be a quarter of the 300 then, so we’re talking 75 or so?” asked Tom Costello of NBC news, in an attempt to clarify how many groups had been affected.

“That’s correct. Is that a quarter?” Lerner asked hesitantly. “I’m not good at math.”

“You’re with the IRS,” Costello noted.

“But I’m a lawyer, not an accountant, sorry!” said Lerner, who is the director of the tax-exempt division of the IRS.
