IRS Hearings Livestream
— Ace

Sorry, I've posted this late; I've missed Carter Hall's testimony. @LauraWalkerKC said he was "naming names, like a boss."

Here's a preview.

The star of today’s show will almost certainly be Carter Hull. When his name first popped up, it seemed that Hull might have been at the BOLO nexus, and possibly the key to the scandal. His testimony in depositions didn’t disappoint, either. Instead of being a driver of the effort, Hull told investigators that he had been placed in the “demeaning” position of having his approval authority stripped on Tea Party cases, which went to Washington and the IRS chief counsel’s office rather than concluded positively for the applicants, as he would have determined.

Expect Issa and Republicans to spend a lot of time with Hull, drawing him out on those points, and with Elizabeth Hofacre as well. She has been a gold mine of information on the lower-level operations, and will likely serve to rebut DemocratsÂ’ attempts to show equivalence between treatment of conservatives and progressives in the tax-exempt unit.

I mentioned Hull's testimony earlier; he claims that he was told to put Tea Party cases through Lerner and her Obama-appointee lawyer Wilkins. Hofacre, meanwhile, complained of interference from on-high in the course of her regular duties.

Hofacre said that she integrated questions from Hull into her follow-ups with Tea Party groups, and that Hull had to approve the letters seeking more information that she sent out to those organizations. That process, she said, was both unusual and “demeaning.”

...

“I thought it was over the top,” she added, in interviews held by investigators in both parties from the House Oversight and Ways and Means committees. “I am not sure where it came from, but it was a bit unusual.”

So, Hofacre said that Carter Hull had interfered with her regular job duties, instructing her to ask the Tea Party all sorts of improper questions; and Hull, in turn, says his directives actually came from Lerner and Wilkins.

Here's what the Democrats are saying: 1, "rush to judgment," 2, "politicized," 3, Darryl Issa called Jay Carney a "paid liar," boo hoo hoo, 4, "this isn't much of a scandal," 5, progressives were targeted too.

They're not seeking any information, just flacking and attempting to divert.

23 I get the feeling that when it comes to the two parties, on the whole they are both working towards greater centralization of power in Washington. However, the difference comes from the wings. Where are the Rand Pauls and Ted Cruzes of the left side of the chambers who are willing to step up to their party's leadership? I'm not supporting the RNC anymore, but I can't imagine that a bright future doesn't involve the "crazy hobbit" wing of the Republican party. Can't say that about anyone in the Dem party or the Rep leadership, but I can't give up on the Republican party as a whole as long as Paul, Cruz, Jindal, and Walker are the potential future leadership.

Everyone else also warned to be on the lookout for the MSM and given business cards on which is typed "Just ask the White House, they'll tell you what to say anyway." Federal Congress cannot (and wouldn't if they could, the fuckers) save us. Only our States can- and the question is if they will.

81 This hearing will ultimately be no different than the previous hearings.

The GOP members of the Oversight Committee will ask the witnesses cogent questions designed to find out who gave the orders to focus attention on all 292 conservative organizations applicants for tax-exempt status during the time frame in question - while the progressive members of the Committee will attempt to deflect, misdirect, and discredit the Committee in an effort to protect the progressives who ordered the abuse of power against their perceived political enemies.

82 Part of my rage these 5 years was generated by the mistaken notion we had a chance in hell of stopping the wreck, we don't short of violence I still think there was a chance, just that “we” didn’t take it. I blame Perry a lot—he was the only real option after some other low-profile dropouts. At the time I think people thought the dropouts would allow a coalescion (I just made that word up) around Perry, but it also meant that when Perry imploded the remaining options just weren’t that good. At that point, the best options were people like Gingrich and Cain—and I’m not arguing that they were good options. I have wondered if it’s necessarily a good thing to have too few options at the start of the primaries.

Obama can and has been directing the US government to take illegal actions to persecute american citizens and businesses that defy him. He can hype up racial resentment without consequence, to include prosecuting or not prosecuting based off of race. He will have doubled the national debt of all presidents combined by the time he leaves office. He can illegally ship weapons to mexico with no consequences. He is using the levers of power to punish his enemies every day and there is 0 check on him because his political party is corrupt and the media whose job it is to inform the people is deliberately censoring information which could hurt him. So there is nothing you or anyone can do he won.

What's most troubling to me is that certain facets of the Federal government are being used to harass and intimidate the general population, especially those on the wrong side of the aisle politically. I never thought I ever had to fear my own government, I believed in the premise of we the people had the control, somewhere along the line that got upended.

Or is it becoming clearer that Boner knew and did nothing--seeing an opportunity to stab the Tea Party in the back (by doing nothing) with IRS's knife? And blame it on the Dems later?

Hey, anyone want to find the number of times Boner has praised (a) the Tea Party (b) candidates or Congressmen supported by the Tea Party?

Hmm.

Would it kill the guy to stand up for the one group he owes his Speakership to?

Nah.

Better to chum up with Washington insiders and help Obama pass some sort of amnesty. (which BTW, is another dagger directly aimed at the Tea Party.)

Like I said before, you want to kill amnesty, tie this to Boner. He'll make a deal to kill amnesty if he gets out of this. Don't appeal to his better nature, appeal to his self-interest.

(2)  Who would appoint a special prosecutor if we did have one (hint: it isn't the House).

(3)  If you expected to go from testimony to a hanging within 24 hours (or a couple of months) you really are forgetting how hearings work.  Watergate took a few years from start to finish.  So did Iran-Contra.  Keep your outrage, but temper it with the realization that the entire system was designed - purposely designed - to go slowly.

Sven, I am angered by this, that federal agencies were used for the purposes of denying civil rights to citizens.  My gut feeling - and what I am hearing supports that - is that this was organized by the upper levels of the administration.  This is just beginning, this is the congressional hearings.  The court cases filed by groups who were targeted (and I bet a lot of groups are looking at that now that it is known the delays weren't due only to bureaucratic ineptitude but actual malice) will be next.

We're now at the starting-to-name-names point.  This where it gets fun as person after person gets to sit down and decide if they want to expend their life-savings on lawyers (and no matter how well a federal supervisor is paid the lawyers needed will cost more) or just start singing like a canary.  My experience is that the agency bureaucrats will sing and that the songs sung are going to be very entertaining.

This, however, takes time.  The entire process is designed to take time.  To expect a person to be hauled off in chains out of a congressional hearing room is purest fantasy, though.

263 ADOBE WORKED JUST FINE

Those 4 words in that order do not parse.  Adobe is populated by coders who flunked out of working on Minx.

Probably just auto updated to IE 10.... which means you will probably have to reinstall your adobe products to get IT 10 to recognize them...

Then it is unfortunate that the system we have is one that goes slowly.  Sort of what Rumsfeld was saying about war and the military.

Nah, 'cuz what I post is often crazy, kookie. Who would ever thing the president of the united states would violate the letter, and spirit of the law? I've been thinking this since January 2009, and it's crazy talk, right up until the time Obama goes for the whole enchilada, and it's still crazy even then. Unless you have some working knowledge of human history and human behavior.

Obama is what he is, and he gets away with it because no one knows how (politically) to stop him.

I don't know what it's going to take, prayer maybe. What's left?

I grasp that, I also fear that the system was not designed for an idiocracy stupid enough to elect a man openly running on obliterating it whose prime loyalty was to international marxism.

Of course it is - the GOP in Congress has already repeatedly proven that they are afraid of being attacked by the lamestream media and will surrender their so-called principles when confronted / extorted by the Democrat leadership.

285 Why the fuck do we not have a special prosecutor on this, Benghazi and F&F????

It's beyond incompetence; it's collusion.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton

JJ - I've come to agree with Mark Levin on this.  The repubics have not insisted on a Special Prosecutor as THEY want to remain in the limelight and have  the image of actually doing something which of course they are not.

The egos of our political class is killing us literally.  One of my favorite quotes from Reagan was  "Imagine how much we could accomplish if no one cared about who got the credit"

287 I watched the entirety of the earlier hearings.  I turned this one off after a few minutes.  Nothing will come of this, and it is gutwrenching.  Everyone really, really think about that and let the full import sink in: nothing will come of this.  Your voice is now subject to very real, very coordinated oppression from literally the highest level of government.  There is no recourse either legal or political, only extra-political.

Posted by: shillelagh at July 18, 2013 10:12 AM (hRzu2)

288 People, none of it matters.  A plurality in America thinks Obama was behind this whole IRS mess directly, hates his policies and believes we are heading in the wrong direction, and yet he still receives close to 50% overall approval and is considered an excellent leader.

The world simply no longer makes sense.  Who are the people which approve of the job Obama is doing and yet disagree with everything he does?  It is madness.

would a class-action civil suit against irs, and lerner, and others help.
