— DrewM Amnesty is like the main character in a horror movie franchise. Every time you think it's dead there's someone who thinks they can squeeze a few more dollars out of another sequel and back it comes.
Still, there's growing feeling on the left and right that this round is over.
Conservative talk radio may not have killed amnesty this time around, but it definitely helped liberals realize theyÂ’ve already lost.On Tuesday, House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said the following to conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt:
In my opinion if you, after you have the borders secure and these enforcement mechanisms in place. If you were to do something, I would start first of all with children who were brought here illegally by their parents. TheyÂ’ve grown up here. TheyÂ’ve been educated here. They are ready to face the world and they have no documents. I think thereÂ’s a more compelling argument to be made for them. But, even for them, I would say that they get a legal status in the United States and not a pathway to citizenship that is created especially for them.
Follow the link and you'll see a number of liberal writers linked to who are realizing that the game is up this time.
Here's a taste of Josh Marhsall's take from TPM.
I get that it’s difficult for immigration reformers to see and accept the writing on the wall — that reform is likely dead in this Congress. … But pretending this isn’t the case is actually damaging the prospects of reform. It makes all the tactical and strategic sense in the world to take this out of the confusing arcana of Washington’s intentionally obfuscating procedural maze and put it back into the political realm where it belongs. In other words, stop pretending that the GOP House’s hardening resolve to kill the Senate bill is going to change and take this whole question back to the people looking forward to the 2014 election.
Now, the GOP may still find a way to give into it's suicidal fascination with amnesty but preventing a quick vote in the House before the August recess was vitally important. When they come back it's going to be all about ObamaCare, the debt ceiling and the Continuing Resolution. The GOP is on the defensive with a good part of their base on those issues and what can be delivered. It really would be a suicide run to top off what will likely be unsatisfying endings on those issues with amnesty.
If amnesty dies it will be interesting to see how it plays out with the 2016 field. You'd have to think the pro-amnesty types are going to have to do some major re calibration of their positions. This would mark the 4th time the GOP base has stood firm on amnesty (2007, pushing McCain and Romney to the right in 08/12). Being to the left of the base on this creates a major hurdle to overcome for the Rubio and Ryans of the world.
So it's not dead, it may not even be resting but there are some hopeful signs. That of course means it's not time to let up but to double the pain. Go to town halls, write letters and keep the pressure on. Only an idiot would keep pushing amnesty at this point but they don't call the GOP "The Stupid Party" for nothing.

What's depressing is that the GOP leadership won't have been against it because it's a lousy thing, but instead because they would have lost an election.

It never sleeps
It never gives up.
It just constantly pounds away at the supporting structures of civilization.

A Republican Dreamact and tossing out work visas like strip club fliers is amnesty, cause everybody gets to stay until the new Democratic House next year allows full-up Amnesty to speed through.
DC is telling you you won, when you really lost. It's like the car salesman telling saying you got a great deal. That means you just got taken.

Until they pull the political sheet over the elective career bodies of Choom Boy (a/k/a Mr Executive Order), Reid, Pelosi, Bitch McConnell, Rubio, McCain, Graham and the rest of the "we need Sensible Immigration Reform" brigade, this sore will continue to fester, no matter what rags like the WaEx say.
I see this as a Squirrels and Shiny Stuff distraction like Weiner and Filner. We'll all be celebrating the demise of amnesty while Our Betters wrap it in a different cloak and slide it through.
The apologists and enablers of the screwed-up right disgust me almost as much as the dream-stupefied loons of the left. We should know better, but we don't.

I think it is the isolation and insulation provided by being in D.C. so much. all of the people they hear and interact with are talking about how wonderful and necessary an amnesty must be that the inhabitants forget that there is another, larger world out there with a differing opinion. And when they hear that differing opinion they get offended, wondering how someone could have a different opinion from that of the very smart people they interact with and hear everyday. It would be wiser for them to get out of this little provincial town they are in more often and see the wiser world, but you know how hard it is to do that.

Goodlatte was speaking in English, so let me translate...
It's the position of the GOP that a new category of "permanent resident" status be created for (beginning with) children who were brought here by their illegal parents. No new pathway for citizenship will be created especially for them, but there already a number of ways they can eventually get there.
This is what people have been calling "amnesty".
This is a defensible position for the GOP and one most reasonable people will accept.
This is the position most elected officials on the right will take when idiots stand up in townhall meetings yelling that we should "enforce the law" and kick in doors throughout the country, deporting every illegal regardless of circumstances.

Are you so used to the current state of affairs in which we spend too much time worrying about how much bad shit the "servants of the people" will heap on us that you'll settle for a permanent state of LOTE-ism?
There was a time -- believe it or not -- when the difference between "friends" and "enemies" was pretty well defined, and most of the latter were overseas and, when worse came to worst, could be put down by our strong military.
So the answer to both questions is, IMO, a big, fat resounding "NO!" In fact, "fuck no!"
America will be on the road to recovery when the Prophets of Choom and the squishy hack RINOs are sent to the showers for good. Or, better, to prison, where traitors belong.

You need to create circumstances that encourage them to deport themselves.
Then they won't come back.
I fully realize this will require authorities to enforce the laws to include more than just the LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, but then what the fuck are we paying them for anyway?
Posted by: ontherocks at August 21, 2013 06:27 AM (l0HgK)
86 "Meanwhile most illegal immigrants "living in the shadows" are likely not too interested in amnesty. Why give up their pseudo-citizenship plus status where they get all the benefits of citizenship while retaining special treatment?"
Because if a comprehensive law is written properly, people who don't come forward and obtain legal resident status would be subject to a much easier and faster deportation.
"Comprehensive" is a word that means the item encompasses more than just the primary item. It means the law can makes things harder for illegals as well as giving them a legal way to live here.

When has the man ever articulated any kind of political philosophy that the right can defend? What does this say about the party? You give the left the excuse to use the argument "you don't care about brown people."
Boehner does nothing to fight against that perception. And even if amnesty does not pass before the '14 elections, he's arming the Dems with the ammunition they need to take back the majority.

Perhaps that might be a persuasive strategy if there were a fence along the entire length of the southern border. Yes, I know there are lots of problems with a fence but in a low trust environment, some physical evidence who's existence cannot be argued over would be a required first step. The fact that the proponents of amnesty are adamantly opposed to creating this evidence of their good faith is a pretty good demonstration that there is no good faith on that side of the debate.

Stone, never vote again
Some people on here are so closed minded. You hate the Speaker, I see that he has value, so you don't want me to vote?
Why waste a good conservative vote?
Do you only want people who agree with you 100% to vote? So we can lose elections 90% to 10%?
When has he ever stood up for conservative principles?
Some of you are acting like the Speaker is always caving to Obama and giving him 100% what he wants, when the opposite is true. Obama has gotten virtually nothing through since he came to power. And that's all he has the power to do.
You have to be realistic about your expectation.
He stopped Amnesty. He played hardball and actually got a bit of deficit reduction. He has killed all of Obama budgets and all Obama attempts at further stimulus.
I mean, what do you want the man to do? If you want see him spout red meat rhetoric, pull him up on cspan.
If you want him to magically make Obamacare disappear, or pull a miracle and make the tax code change, or get some e reform; you have to get real, he is not dealing with Bill, these things are not possible.
I know some of you are way to invested in doom a gloom, but the country isn gone yet.

"I'd think that anyone having a consular ID card for Mexico or some other country would already make that possible."
Right now, illegals with no ID can apply for and get welfare, free medical, housing assistance, etc.
With a legal status and full background information, this same person (if the benefits are still allowed) could have the cost of their assistance billed back to their home country. Since the U.S. is the center for banking, the money can be taken if the home country doesn't voluntarily pay.
Posted by: jwest at August 21, 2013 07:12 AM (u2a4R)
Amnesty is an inside-the-Beltway issue. Always was. This is why I was never too worried about it happening. I do think the key to killing it was the House not having any vote on any bill before the recess. They are going to come back saying that they heard from exactly no actual constituents that amnesty is a priority issue. There really is no pressure for the House to do anything except possibly a border security bill, but they really shouldn't even do that because then the Beltway gang will demand a conference on the full Senate bill.
The big issue then is how far Obama is willing to go with executive orders and non-enforcement of existing laws. I don't think he would dare do too much before the 2014 elections, this would surely cost Democrats a couple more Senate seats than they are going to lose already.
The other issue is if and how the Republican Party can reframe the issue for 2016.

Not exactly.
Assume that the country in question (Mexico) refuses to pay and that for foreign relations reasons, we don't want to simply seize the money from their accounts here in the U.S.
No problem. We just run a tab.
In the world of international finance, an entry on a ledger is just as good as hundred dollar bills. It's just numbers on a page, however, it does offset the amount and lessens the burden on the U.S. taxpayer.
Another benefit to charging the home country back is that they will be more likely to discourage immigration, instead of publishing pamphlets on how to get across the border.

Hey MrScribbler:
“…So the answer to both questions is, IMO, a big, fat resounding "NO!" …”
Why do you say no?
IÂ’ll explain my rationale below.
We would certainly be safer from amnesty under a Dem president than under a President Jeb or President Krispy. Jeb and Krispy are both committed amnesty advocates, at least as committed as Comrade Barky. If either were president, he would sign the Schumer-Rubio bill if presented to him in a heartbeat. A significant portion of Republican congresscritters are against the Schumer-Rubio bill simply because it is a Democrat bill. A significant portion of them would feel compelled to sign the Schumer-Rubio bill if it came to them with the imprimatur of a new Republican president.
Whom do you expect the Republicans to nominate for president in 2016? Before you answer, remember the people making the decision are same geniuses who gave us John McCain and Mitt Romney the last two go-arounds. IÂ’d love to have a President Ted Cruz, but the likelihood of the Republican Party nominating him is roughly zero.
If I am right, you are going to have to choose between Killery and Chris Christie for president in 2016. Whom do you choose?
The Republican Party needs to collapse like the Whigs and be replaced by a Conservative Party. Until they do, the best we can hope for is divided government with gridlock, with Dems in the presidency and Reps controlling enough of Congress to block them . But for the Republican Party to collapse, it needs to keep losing at the presidential level.

#237 Well, my Congressman is lead sponsor of a new bill to cut funding for NSA, and he is not exactly a libertarian firebrand and this is a pretty ordinary middle-class suburban district. He must be seeing some polls showing this is a hot issue with a lot of likely voters. I was really surprised he did this and is crowing about it.
Obama has done an unbelievable amount of damage to average Americans' trust in government. They may still like him as a person, but they don't trust him. This plays into the debate over repealing Obamcare and also into the amnesty debate. If the GOP plays it right this could really help in 2016. If you don't trust government you sure as hell don't want the party of ever-expanding government in power anymore. You don't want a trimmer like Hillary Clinton as POTUS.

As I mentioned, we could seize it out of their accounts here if necessary.
This only works because we're the U.S. and the center for international banking, plus Mexico's largest export customer. They have no choice.
However, the idea of just running a tab is just as viable.

I just don't understand why there's Republicans that so want this. If you're coming from a Libertarian perspective, do you not understand that 20 million plus new impoverished citizens means tens of trillions in new government payouts? To say nothing of what sort of new political reality you're going to be facing when the Free Shit Army swells to that size.
I know with some Republicans, it's all about settling scores with the base they so despise. There's no question that's what's going on with my two Senators, McCain and Flake. Border hawks have been causing them headaches nearly their entire career, and this is their chance for the ultimate "Fuck You!"
I will say this, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Obama tries some sort of blanket Amnesty on his way out, but my guess is Democrats up for election may talk him out of it.

Every Amnesty RINO must be primaried. Even if you lose, just show the flag.
In the General, between the Amnesty RINO and the Commiecrat, go vote for the American Indepdendent / Constitution / whatever they call it your state Party candidate. Of course he will lose. But the message must go out. No more Amnesty RINOs.

Instead, sent it back with the words NO AMNESTY written in huge red sharpie letters across the entire thing.
Think it'll send a message? Nah, me neither

I got a letter from our esteemed betters in the RNC asking if I would take a survey and send it back in. I was about to take my first reaction, which would have been to furiously tear it to shreds.
Instead, sent it back with the words NO AMNESTY written in huge red sharpie letters across the entire thing.

Me too! Maybe enough of us should do this?

Yep, and we'd probably also be involved in about 5 wars in the Middle East.
But McCain's against Pork barrel spending, which costs the average American about a penny out of their paycheck. So there's that.

Remember when the DemSM was propping up McLame in 2000 in an attempt to get at Bush the Younger? And yet, when it comes down to policy, there is no difference.

"Amnesty is an inside-the-Beltway issue. Always was."
My thoughts also, Rockmom. Staying too long inside the Beltway makes members of Congress too beholden to the ideas and concerns of the provincials who inhabit that reclaimed swampland and too forgetful of the concerns of the people who actually vote for them.

I'm pretty sure that when people return those surveys, the surveys are immediately discarded and the only thing in the envelope that gets paid attention to is the check, if any, that the respondent enclosed. I would be genuinely surprised if anyone actually compiled the results of the survey for the RNC.

I can't help but think if enough envelope stuffers get the same message again and again, somehow it will filter up to the ones supervising them?
It makes me feel better to scibble "NO AMNESTY" on their surveys, anyway. So there's that.
