Is NBC'S David Gregory Crazy Or Just An Unlikable Jackass?
— DrewM

I've worked for myself for most of my adult life and don't have any real experience with working in a cooperate environment, so maybe this is totally normal. Or maybe it's a sign of something far more troubling.

NBC News last year hired a "psychological consultant" to interview David Gregory's friends and family, part of an effort to get greater insight into the "Meet the Press" host's personality, according to a new report.

The point of hiring the consultant, NBC spokeswoman Meghan Pianta said, was to "to get perspective and insight from people who know him best."

...

"Gregory’s job does not appear to be in any immediate jeopardy, but there are plenty of signs of concern,” [The Washington Post's Paul] Farhi wrote.

You have to wonder if perhaps NBC is just worried about Gregory's state of mind. I mean taking over the number one Sunday talk-show and running it into the ground has to be a heavy burden anyone.

Still, it makes this image, and the DC prosecutor's decision not to try this obvious violation of the law, all the more troubling.

Naturally all of us here at the HQ wish Mr. Gregory the best in this difficult time.

24 From the article: Last year Meet the Press brought in a brand consultant — not, as reported, a psychological one — to better understand how its anchor connects. This is certainly not unusual for any television program, especially one that’s driven so heavily by one person Do you have to "connect" to host a Sunday talk show? It seems to me detachment would be an OK thing for an interviewer to have actually. Especially one who would have to be occasionally confrontation. You'd have to feign personabilty for the audience in certain segments, but that should be easy enough.

55 this is all the rage with management and head hunting search firms. They do what they call "360" reviews, wherein they have everybody rate everybody, superiors, subordinates, and equals. They then collect the reviews and use it to evaluate the performance of the executive. They do this in the military too now, because the DoD must copy everything business does. When large companies are looking for executives, they employ search firms. The search firms then interview all of the above, and sometimes the spouse, to see if the candidate fits the "corporate culture" If they are looking to promote someone within the company to an executive position, they do all of the above, and hire a "coach" for the internal candidates as part of their "professional development" of the candidates. And the "coach" wants to meet with the spouse and sometimes the kids. And all of this interviewing and reviewing and coaching can take more than a year and the large companies pay for all this. Its all pushed on them from the Human Resources department of the company. Its part of the chickafication of business sometimes, after al lthe review, and interviews and coaching they use the information to fire the person bye bye Gregory

Posted by: thunderb at April 21, 2014 08:30 AM (zOTsN)

56 The answer to the lack of appeal of Gregory seems much simpler, IMO.

If you just want to leftwing talking points you can just as easily see them presented by clowns like Colbert and Stewart, or idiotic eye candy like the latest Hollywood starlets.

62 How does this not merit a lawsuit by Mr.Gregory against NBC? Think about it. Your company admits to having a psychologist out interviewing your friends. If this is something Gregory gave permission to do(I can't imagine doing it) , then at the very least, there is a privacy violation issue in NBC somehow allowing a competitive media outlet(Wash. Post) to announce it. Psychological services fall under health care provisions offered by an employer. They are private and need to be initiated by the employee. The opposite would be if there were an agreement between NBC and Gregory that he would seek counseling due to behavior issues, etc. that was jeopardizing his job and in discussions, counseling was required if continued employment was desired.

74 NBC News last year hired a "psychological consultant" to interview David Gregory's friends and family, part of an effort to get greater insight into the "Meet the Press" host's personality, according to a new report.

I'll say this:   as a general rule, if you want to get greater insight into someone's personality, you speak TO THAT PERSON, not to the people around them.   You talk to their friends, family and acquaintances when you're trying to    compile evidence    for something.

If it's "therapy" yeah it's probably covered by one of the privacy laws. But if Gregory's not a patient then I'm not so sure this is true. Analogous example: your company brings in a "team building expert" to assess your team dynamics. Excluding NDA's the company makes the person sign, what would bind the consultant to your privacy?

107 In an email, Pianta challenged Farhi's reporting, saying that the network brought in a "brand consultant" not a psychological one as Farhi reported:

Last year Meet the Press brought in a brand consultant — not, as reported, a psychological one — to better understand how its anchor connects. This is certainly not unusual for any television program, especially one that’s driven so heavily by one person.

Was this "brand consultant" meeting with Gregory's friends and family, as originally reported?   Because again, what the hell does that have to do with the purpose of a "brand" consultant?  You'd want to have interviews with the audience,  not the man's close acquaintances.   All they're going to do is tell you, "He's a nice guy, really!"   like     every   gangbanger's mother says about her son after the little angel has just shot six people.

Your brand    doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with how you are IN REALITY.  Rather, it has everything to do with how you are PERCEIVED.   Johnny Carson was an asshole, but he was perceived by the audience as a great guy.   That was his brand.  If they want to fix Gregory's brand they need to start by identifying why everyone hates him ("smarmy son of a bitch" should fit the bill), then work with HIM to fix that aspect of his persona.   It's got jack shit to do with those in his close circle of friends, family and colleagues.

257 Is NBC'S David Gregory Crazy Or Just An Unlikable Jackass? I've worked for myself for most of my adult life and don't have any real experience with working in a cooperate environment, so maybe this is totally normal. Or maybe it's a sign of something far more troubling. NBC News last year hired a "psychological consultant" to interview David Gregory's friends and family, part of an effort to get greater insight into the "Meet the Press" host's personality, according to a new report. The point of hiring the consultant, NBC spokeswoman Meghan Pianta said, was to "to get perspective and insight from people who know him best." ... "GregoryÂ’s job does not appear to be in any immediate jeopardy, but there are plenty of signs of concern,” [The Washington Post's Paul] Farhi wrote. You have to wonder if perhaps NBC is just worried about Gregory's state of mind. I mean taking over the number one Sunday talk-show and running it into the ground has to be a heavy burden anyone. Still, it makes this image, and the DC prosecutor's decision not to try this obvious violation of the law, all the more troubling. gregory.PNG Naturally all of us here at the HQ wish Mr. Gregory the best in this difficult time. Its part of the chickafication of business sometimes, after al lthe review, and interviews and coaching they use the information to fire the person bye bye Gregory Posted by: thunderb at April 21, 2014 12:30 PM (zOTsN) 56 The answer to the lack of appeal of Gregory seems much simpler, IMO. This is certainly not unusual for any television program, especially one thatÂ’s driven so heavily by one person. 273 For crime deterrence you have two main levers 1. Odds of being caught 2. Severity of punishment Sentencing was toughened in the 90s to deal with the huge crime wave because cops found it impossible to increase the odds of being caught much. Low odds of being caught + light punishment = a lot more career criminals. Which is where America is headed again, most likely. We'll see.

276 And people wonder why all the jobs got outsourced to China. It's not HR mumbo-jumbo that caused offshoring to China. It's regulations, especially those that are designed solely to benefit Unions and funnel money to Democrats and their constituents. I've worked with teams in China and India. It's a pain in the butt. It takes 24 hours to get even simple requests done. There are all sorts of communications issues that you just don't have when you're dealing with a local team. Then there's differences in work product. Some of the programmers I've worked with in India returned the most buggy half-assed code I've ever seen in my life. I'm including the stuff I saw college kids half-assing. People here in the US wouldn't put up with what they have to by offshoring if it weren't so difficult to function here in the US.

289 Do you have to "connect" to host a Sunday talk show? It seems to me detachment would be an OK thing for an interviewer to have actually. Especially one who would have to be occasionally confrontation. You'd have to feign personabilty for the audience in certain segments, but that should be easy enough. Actually, David Brinkley was quite standoffish and quite popular. He just let Will and Donaldson and the guests go at it.

You're asking the wrong person to explain the "logic" of the gun laws in DC, MD, IL and others.

Apparently it revolves around the idea that you must have a license to buy/possess ammunition.

And you only get a license if you own a weapon that you've registered and gotten license for.

When buying ammunition, you present said license.

Of course those on the coastal insane states can just toodle up to New Hampshire (?) or west to PA and buy anything they want to buy. And they do.

If they are caught with it, they can be prosecuted.

317 It's why treason historically carried such a harsh penalty -- ie death -- because it was so hard to catch. Often the actual crime a traitor commits is quite small -- some info here, a document there -- but the point is deterrence of future treason, not equitable punishment. So the punishment is out-sized and uber-harsh to set an example for others.

372 His body was urgent against her, and she didn't have the heart anymore to fight...She saw his eyes, tense and brilliant, fierce, not loving. But her will had left her. A strange weight was on her limbs. She was giving way. She was giving up...she had to lie down there under the boughs of the tree, like an animal, while he waited, standing there in his shirt and breeches, watching her with haunted eyes...He too had bared the front part of his body and she felt his naked flesh against her as he came into her. For a moment he was still inside her, turgid there and quivering. Then as he began to move, in the sudden helpless orgasm, there awoke in her new strange thrills rippling inside her. Rippling, rippling, rippling, like a flapping overlapping of soft flames, soft as feathers, running to points of brilliance, exquisite and melting her all molten inside. It was like bells rippling up and up to a culmination. She lay unconscious of the wild little cries she uttered at the last. But it was over too soon, too soon, and she could no longer force her own conclusion with her own activity. This was different, different. She could do nothing. She could no longer harden and grip for her own satisfaction upon him. She could only wait, wait and moan in spirit and she felt him withdrawing, withdrawing and contracting, coming to the terrible moment when he would slip out of her and be gone. Whilst all her womb was open and soft, and softly clamouring, like a sea anenome under the tide, clamouring for him to come in again and make fulfillment for her. She clung to him unconscious in passion, and he never quite slipped from her, and she felt the soft bud of him within her stirring, and strange rhythms flushing up into her with a strange rhythmic growing motion, swelling and swelling til it filled all her cleaving consciousness, and then began again the unspeakable motion that was not really motion, but pure deepening whirlpools of sensation swirling deeper and deeper through all her tissue and consciousness, til she was one perfect concentric fluid of feeling, and she lay there crying in unconscious inarticulate cries.” ¯ D.H. She felt, now, she had come to the real bedrock of her nature, and was essentially shameless. She was her sensual self, naked an unashamed. She felt a triumph, almost a vainglory. So! That was how it was! That was life! That was how onself really was! There was nothing left to disguise or be ashamed of. She shared her ultimate nakedness with a man, another being.” ¯ D.H. 396 I actually sometimes enjoyed watching Tim Russert when he hosted "Meet the Press". Everyone knew he was a down-the-line Liberal, but he honestly tried to be fair and even handed, even though he was pals with James Carville (spit). He had Rush Limbaugh on for his evening interview show for several consecutive weeks, and it was funny and interesting, and Russert was fair and friendly with Rush. They got on quite well. The only thing that Russert ever did that really peeved me was once he had Rudy Giuliani on for his Sunday interview show (not Meet The Press) and deliberately had Rudy sit in a smaller chair because he is not a big guy. It was a conscious effort to demean Giuliani (and this was prior to 9/11). But Russert was verbally nice to Rudy. It was weird. Gregory is close to unwatchable. He is an obnoxious person. I don't know if NBC could have made a worse choice (well , Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, so yes a worse choice could have been made). But pretty much ALL the network news departments are rotten now, so what are we missing? Nothing.

440 Meb's father apparently moved the whole family over, none of them speaking English, and they're all doctors and lawyers now.

More Mebs, less Zeitunis.

441 Let's wish him our best. He made the sign of the cross. Cue the Lib hatred. And probably an IRS audit.

No, no, you see, he gets a pass.  He's one of those delightful, funny little people of color.  They have such quaint customs, like that - what did you call it?  Sign of the cross?

442 Look, if reading from 50 Shades is that bad, just do it in the style of the narrator from Rocky & Bullwinkle...

447 His body was urgent against her, and she didn't have the heart anymore to fight...She saw his eyes, tense and brilliant, fierce, not loving. She clung to him unconscious in passion, and he never quite slipped from her, and she felt the soft bud of him within her stirring, and strange rhythms flushing up into her with a strange rhythmic growing motion, swelling and swelling til it filled all her cleaving consciousness, and then began again the unspeakable motion that was not really motion, but pure deepening whirlpools of sensation swirling deeper and deeper through all her tissue and consciousness, til she was one perfect concentric fluid of feeling, and she lay there crying in unconscious inarticulate cries. ”
And then a thrill ran down her leg

448 I've worked for myself for most of my adult life and don't have any real experience with working in a cooperate environment, so maybe this is totally normal-Ace I don't see you being a hypocritical adolescent. But, that's just me. Perhaps the cobs think differently. I don't work with you or hang with you.

"The liberal left lusts after the power of mind control, both individual and the masses. Anyone who doesn't agree with liberal ideology must be insane. They can be no other explanation."

You forgot evil: those who disagree must be insane, or evil.

Or, if they're feeling charitable, merely stupid.

If they are indeed looking for Gregory's monkey-scalp, what is the more serious issue this will take the air away from?
