Is the United Nations "racist"? Apparently so.
— Purple Avenger

From the UN's PROTOCOL AGAINST THE SMUGGLING OF MIGRANTS BY LAND, SEA AND AIR (page 3)

For the purposes of this Protocol:

(a) “Smuggling of migrants” shall mean the procurement, in order to obtain, directly or indirectly, a financial or other material benefit, of the illegal entry of a person into a State Party of which the person is not a national or a permanent resident;

(b) “Illegal entry” shall mean crossing borders without complying with the necessary requirements for legal entry into the receiving State;

However, the UN protocol does go on to state:
Migrants shall not become liable to criminal prosecution under this Protocol for the fact of having been the object of conduct set forth in article 6 of this Protocol
It does however allow for criminality in the creation and provision of fraudulent identity documents, prosecution of human smugglers, or enabling/assisting the beneficiaries of the "illegal entry" to continue what they did.

An Australian opposition pol was recently taken to task over his use of "illegal" and vindicated by a "fact check" that cited the United Nations protocol language.

Heh, so "sanctuary cities" could, in theory, be prosecuted via national laws without violating the UN protocol because they're "Enabling a person who is not a national or a permanent resident to remain in the State concerned without complying..." [Article 6, 1(c)].

4 Has anyone seen this ABC News piece?

"Alone or not, abc news has learned the president's national security team is preparing for a significantly larger military attack than most had anticipated. The air campaign which is expected to last at least two days will potentially include an aerial bombardment of missiles fired from b-2 and b-52 bombers flying from the united states.

That in addition to a relentless assault from tomahawk missiles. Those ships ever loaded with nearly 200 missiles, plans call for firing the vast majority of them. As one senior national security official told abc news, this military strike could do more damage to assad's forces in 48 hours than the syrian rebels have done in nearly two years of civil war."

ABC News is now reporting that Iran plans to retaliate if we attack Syria. They said:

The WSJ reports that Iran plans to have militants in Iraq attack the US Embassy there, and order Hezbollah to attack the US Embassy in Beirut.

But do not worry, Iran does not support terrorists and Obama can negotiate with them, because he is not an evil white neo-colonialist like all the previous presidents.  I am sure Obama and Kerry have the security of the State Department employees in mind.  They did so well in Libya and Egyot on 9/11/2012.

18 I did a study of raising the minimum wage vs unemployment here over several decades.  What I found was that raising the minimum raise had little long term impact on general unemployment.  Which makes sense when you realize that most workers do not work for minimum wage.  However, it did have a very negative short term impact on young workers.

Now all of this was before the unions managed to get an automatic wage increase written into their contracts any time the minimum wage is increased. But since those contracts are largely in the service and retail industries in rust belt States that probably will not have a large impact since unemployment there is already through the roof.

19 18 Vic,

It has an impact in expansion, and competition...but I am done arguing it....

Posted by: Vic at September 06, 2013 02:31 AM (zZbNF)

21 20 Vic,

It makes it onerous to have new start ups because of capital costs.

Add in the fact and yes it is a fact that price structure goes statospheric...

Like I said fuck it...

there is no down side to having a 75,000 dollar minimum wage.....

25 Elections in Australia tomorrow. The Liberal Party has been in power but is expected to lose to the Alliance Party, slightly less Socialist. I heard a stupid person on the radio ask Kevin Rudd, the Labor PM, "Given that both parties are right wing..." Sheesh.

Posted by: Mr. Dave at September 06, 2013 02:42 AM (NCc1Z)

26 I did say that the impact was on young workers.  Guess who who works at the burger joints and who are entry level workers who only make minimum wage?  Young people.  But even at that the impact was only temporary.

And I would like to know how the labor costs for entry level young people effect capital costs?  When I was working in a large buisness capital costs were associated with new buildings and equipment. If you start including labor costs in your capital cost mix you will get a term in the grey bar hotel.

Posted by: Vic at September 06, 2013 02:47 AM (zZbNF)

27 As for the burger joints, I see them going to automated kiosks eventually regardless of what the minimum wage is.

Remember the food vending places in NYC way back in the 50s.  I wonder why that died out?  Probably because it wasn't automated and the unions.

30 27 Vic,

seriously, for real?  how does minimum wage affect capitalization costs for a small business start up?  Thank God the capitalization fairies are there to do all of the work prior to operations becoming profitable.

those cherubic workers are so cute with their tiny little wings, I just saw a platoon of them on Forest Drive air assaulting a Sonic start up.

the best part is they were humming Ride of the Valkyries as they worked.  There is somthing magic in magical thinking.

Because the U.S. is an evil, racist, rich country that got all it's wealth from stealing land from the Native Americans and enslaving the poor minorities (which is still going on this very day). Because it changes the labor vs. capital equation and causes employers to buy more capital equipment to substitute for labor.  Really, Vic.  This is Econ 101 stuff.

The old joke (old as in from the 19th century) is that two guys are looking at a construction site that has a steam shovel excavating a hole.  One turns to the other and says, "It's a disgrace that one man in a steam shovel is doing the work that could employ ten men with shovels."  His friend replies, "Or a hundred men with tea spoons."

46 Off of a sudden all the talk is of B-2 and B-52. No one mentions the Bone, because it is a "conventional" bomber. That is to say, no nukes. Hmm.

I think we have about 60 operational Buffs and 20 Spirits. That's not a lot of aircraft. Wanna impress somebody? Hit 'em with a Hustler, and show 'em what the real hurt looks like.

The Air Force you're about to need is parked at Davis-Monthan. Hope somebody raised a generation of aircraft mechanics nobody told me about, because if this goes to shit we'll need to work them three shifts. The Liberal National Coalition are conservatives, the Liberals being the classical liberals and the National Party representing the farmers and rural electorates. It is a foregone conclusion that the Coalition will win the election as the voters are very anti-green policies and laws put into place by six years of Labor that have hurt the economy.
