Shutdown Theater™ moves from the petty to the sublime
— Purple Avenger

Obama was just warming up with the WWII memorial, now he's upped his game by several orders of magnitude shutting down the ocean.

...Charter guides received a message from the National Park Service this week informing them that they are not permitted to take clients fishing in Florida Bay until the feds get back to work. That means that more than 1,100 square miles of prime fishing is off limits between the southern tip of the mainland to the Keys until further notice.

The closing affects not only fishing guides, but anyone with a license to conduct business in the park, including tour operators and paddling guides — anyone with a Commercial Use Authorization permit, said Dan Kimball, superintendent of Everglades and Dry Tortugas national parks.

Biscayne National Park is also off limits. Enforcement rangers will be on duty...

13 The actual story of King Canute: The third, that with the greatest vigor he commanded that his chair should be set on the shore, when the tide began to rise. And then he spoke to the rising sea saying “You are part of my dominion, and the ground that I am seated upon is mine, nor has anyone disobeyed my orders with impunity. Therefore, I order you not to rise onto my land, nor to wet the clothes or body of your Lord”. But the sea carried on rising as usual without any reverence for his person, and soaked his feet and legs. Then he moving away said: “All the inhabitants of the world should know that the power of kings is vain and trivial, and that none is worthy the name of king but He whose command the heaven, earth and sea obey by eternal laws”. Therefore King Cnut never afterwards placed the crown on his head, but above a picture of the Lord nailed to the cross, turning it forever into a means to praise God, the great king. By whose mercy may the soul of King Cnut enjoy peace.

72 I think we're in double down land... no debt ceiling increase.
El Presidente has overplayed his hand. All those times that you may have said "this guy being raised overseas doesn't think like an American", and someone called you racist probably.

But here is where it comes into play. People will not blame the nebulous tea party/GOP caucus combination. It's too abstract. But the jackass grinning on the golf course, is not abstract... and I'm starting to think the blame for this stuff is going to be laid at the emperor's feet.

I was not in favor of shutting down the govt. I thought our best bet was to force 100% implementation and pray for a majority in the senate to undo the mess that had been done when the whole thing implodes. But damn... this may actually work do our advantage despite the media, and the fact that there is no possible way they will allow us to win the messaging battle on this. The people are stupid... but not that stupid.

So I am signed up for the long haul, let's see where this goes.

College friends (I know, it's California)  have been complaining on FB that the media is "too neutral".

Let's see what's wrong with this paragraph.

- We're only dealing with CRs, which are not budgets.
- The House passed a CR proposal to the Senate which has been rejected, which is not "refusing to sign off" on a spending bill.
- It doesn't even make sense to talk about the House "signing off" on spending bills, seeing how the House STARTS them per the Constitution.

237 From Bookwormroom.com:

"On Thursday Mark Levin cited several Congressional sources who have told him that Obama has no intention of negotiating with Congress on the debt, which is just under $17 trillion, the highest in U.S. history. When unfunded liabilities such as Social Security and Medicare are added in, the real debt is over $125 trillion — a figure so astronomically high that the country has no hope of ever paying it back. Uncontrolled spending has led the nation to this point.

According to Levin, Congressional sources say that Obama does not want any limits on his spending ability, in spite of the fact that the Constitution specifically gives Congress the power to control spending. Further, the use of the 14th Amendment to bypass Congress has never been done before. Thus, such an act would be an entirely new “interpretation” of the 14th Amendment and would raise a plethora of Constitutional issues concerning separation of powers."

Obama is all-in. He's always understood the power of audacity. There is a point beyond which he knows Republicans will not go. Not even Ted Cruz will go there. "There" is the point beyond which awfulness and evil have no relatable context for Americans and even the contemplation of which is so deeply uncomfortable to them that they'll form all manner of denials, deflections and displacements to escape its reality. That is, Obama is breaking through into the realm of literally inconceivable badness, if he hasn't already gotten there. He knows the media will never call him out or identify this epic break, because not only do they secretly stand in awe of the brute political power to achieve it but exist within the same carefully circumscribed world of Washington conduct as Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and all the others. To confront Obama on his own terms as the audaciously transgressive and dangerous alien figure that he is would require a kind of super-human, or rather equally alien, counter-narrative moral force. There simply is nobody in our political realm that can manage this.

Obama knows this. He knows his powers in this pursuit just as he knows the inherent -- really, the unalterable -- weaknesses and limitations of his opponents.

302 Not much mention of the fact anywhere that all commissaries on military installations were all closed on Tuesday night -- stayed open past official shutdown to sell as many perishables as possible. A lot of the employees in these stores are employed by companies that supply the military stores with product. These companies employ civilian workers, most who not only will not be paid through the shutdown due to lost hours, but may be laid off permanently if it continues for too long. The government workers who will be getting their furlough money eventually aren't very worried; however there will be no money for the non-government employees who aren't working during shutdown, including stockers, baggers, and merchandisers. Spending money on park shutdowns and restricting use of the waters for fishermen, etc., while closing grocery stores on bases is beyond comprehension. And all of this doesn't take into account what will be disposed of (literally thrown away) when these stores eventually open because it expired on the shelf during this fiasco.

The TEA Party needs to call itself a religion based in the US founding documents.  Could help hold off the legal hounds for a while.   The US Civil Religion, found mainly in the Declaration of Independence and Preable to the Constitution  overlaid over a largely, but not exclusively, Christian country.

That belief system is being demonized and scoped.

I have long suspected the Founders created  a quasi religion whether they intended to or not.    A legal  contract and oath-based republic has to have religious zeal in its principles to survive.

Facing off against collectivist drones with their social justice class-based dogma, greedy  bureaucrats and haughty politicians   who think of themselves as above everyone else, and sharia-pushing sweet-talking  cultural jihadis is not  going to be easy.  They are all going after our kids first.

(Please let the spacing survive, oh Pixy)

I was reading a 10th C.  opinion* on Abercrombie not being noticed properly to sustain an EEOC claim under  Title VII or something.   Reading the majority on what a religion is under the  relevant decisions got me thinking the Tea Party  could be considered a religion in many ways.     "Nature's God"   is sufficient really.  Sort of a  watchmaker  rationalist  gloss over traditional religion.

I realized the Tea Party will be attacked mercilessly  in part  because  it can't slot itself in to  a protected class.

His base is continuing to get their checks, use their phones, and get their food stamps. This is very calculated. In my nic is a link to micelles mirror blog.

371 Man; I should be King Canute's Publicist. If he were alive i would bill him. ;^) The story of Canute is actually a story of Christian humility. The entire story is never told. He was making a point about God being the real king: The third, that with the greatest vigor he commanded that his chair should be set on the shore, when the tide began to rise.
