Remembrance Day. Let take ourselves back to remember the sacrifices made to form and protect our Great Republic.
So much has been thrown away. Let's see if we can go back and find again the virtue, the fortitude, the honesty and the prudence that assembled a constitution, in its original understanding, that is more precious than gold.

I don't know about Canadians, but I know few Americans know that about 30,000 Canadians volunteered for the US Military during the Vietnam War. I think about 10,000 actually served in VN. but I could be wrong.
As for the 10,000 americans that fled to Canada, I'd say the US Military got the better end of that deal.

And for Angel Roldan, and so may others.....
Lest we forget.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain

An Epiphany really after growing up knowing only what I'd seen on TV or movies and the press wildly anti-war bias. When I was active duty I bonded with a few vets that worked at one of the airfields I worked at and they had been in Nam. That's when I learned to completely be disgusted by Hanoi Jane and her ilk and I saw watching shows like MASH in a whole new light. Not so innocent that show.... not so clever to me ever again.

He grew up hard in Youngstown OH as an orphan during the depression. He would look up at that sky and see airplanes and thought "Shit ya I wan't to do that!"
He and a buddy hitchhiked from OH to CA March AFB and enlisted. He soon was mustanged up and got his wings. Flew during both wars and then was an acrobatic pilot in the 5th AF team called the Falcons that flew demonstrations throughout Asia and Europe.
I asked my dad "Weren't you scared?". He said "Shit ya kid. But we did it anyway"
Happy Memorial Day to all of my fellow vets and the people that love them in the Horde!

In 1983 I was sitting in the Airport in Atlanta Ga. waiting for my transfer plane to arrive. There were a lot of military people in uniform striding through the airport and I would read their ribbons as they passed.
A Red Headed Army Major in his dress greens came up to the seats where I was and I looked at his chest. I saw immediately that he had both Combat Infantry and Airborne Ranger badges and more than the usual one row of medals that all Vietnam vets had.
I saw an Army commendation medal with V for Valor device, a Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters - which meant that he had been wounded three times, and a Legion of Merit medal. I was very surprised to see that; mostly it is Generals who are awarded a legion of merit.
Then I saw that he had a seventh medal on a row all by itself, it was crepe blue with five little stars on it. My eyes got very big - I had never seen one before.
I walked over to where he was sitting and I said "Excuse me Major." to him. He stood up and I shook his hand and said "Thank you, Sir". He looked very confused and said with a puzzled look on his face "Thank me - what did I do?" I answered him "Sir I understand your confusion - its just that I know what that is" nodding toward that seventh ribbon "Thank you sir".
He started crying - no one had ever thanked him before. Here was a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who couldn't imagine why anyone would be thanking him for anything.

Good for you! Practice mostly with the .38's, but be sure to put some .357 through it once in a while just so you are aware of the difference in recoil. Practice practice practice, and carry the damn thing if you can get a permit for it, it won't do you any good sitting in the gun safe.

This Memorial Day weekend brings both joy and tears for my friendship and service with Sergeant Emmett Horn, a bull riding tough guy from Vidor, Texas. Emmett was a weapon specialist, and was deployed TDY from Okinawa on Team A1-113 to Ashau, Republic of Vietnam.
On December 23, 1964 Emmett was conducting a contact patrol 8 KM north of Camp Ashau with approximately 40 CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) Vietnamese and 6 Chinese Hmong bodyguards.
The patrol was ambushed from rising terrain and the CIDG force froze and did not counter the attack by moving into the fire and laying down a withering barrage to break the attack. Emmett was moving down the line of hunkered troops imploring them to react. He was initially wounded in the gut, and shortly thereafter was fatally shot in the back of the head.
The surviving American SF forced the CIDG to carry Emmett back to Camp Ashau for evacuation to CONUS.
Emmett was a very popular man with quick wit, physically powerful, and a great friend. To learn more about Emmett, please visit and read more about his life.

Remembering the phrog crew that went into the water off the PI on my first cruise, and the snake crew from the sister squadron in the Persian Gulf that hit the desert floor escorting the medevac slug.
My prayers for my son's best friend who deploys to Afghanistan this summer, and for all of you who have kids who are serving.
My thanks for all of you Mo-rons who served, and fought, and my deepest respect for those who died.
Long live the United States of America

Heard it was excellent. Makes me cry, reminds me of my Dad and so many other brave ones who defend(ed) us and our liberty. Thanks. Dan Hayes, Stephen Hayes, TWS, brother. Steve mentioned it on Fox a few days back.

That was beautiful, COJ. Thank you so much for your service and your sacrifice and prayers up for you, your family, and your son's friend.

My Dad, still with us. Silver Star, three Purple Hearts. My brother, Lt. James G. Aubrey, USAF, not.
Joseph H. Marshall III--family from Canada--I notified and did Survivor Assistance Officer. Brave family.
Danny, Tommy, Chris and Kim Weber, probably ten deployments between them. Two gone.
Uncles in the North Atlantic, ETO, Pacific.
All those guys I knew, moving forward, forward, forward.
Went to a Moving Wall and the one in DC. Hard, hard thing to do. Can't imagine the design was contentious at first.
There are two towns in Holland with streets named after my father's division--Timberwolves--and one with a street named after his division commander, Terry Allen.
Street in Carentan named after the 101st Airborne. Rose window in the church in Ste. Mere Eglise, fixed after the war, the Holy Mother and Infant, flanked by American paratroopers so that the congregation, when they lift their eyes, can see whence came their deliverance.
Families near American cemeteries adopt our graves, flowers and the whole thing. That's a long time to maintain a self-imposed obligation.
Lots of people remember.

The Distiguished Service Cross is the Nation's second highest award - I have only seen one of those also.

Must have been fun.
I suggest you find a copy of Ernest K. Gann's superb book "Fate is the Hunter" for his take on flying the Hump.
