11 Greetings: Back in the summer of the last '68, I was doing my military service down in Texas, which, after the Bronx, is the place I'd most like to be from. For several months, I was assigned to the base's funeral detail. We would provide pallbearers and a rifle squad for those requesting military funerals in the local area. Military-wise, it wasn't bad duty. On the days when we weren't scheduled for a funeral, we would spend several hours practicing our "drill & ceremonies" and a couple more squaring away our uniforms and equipment. On funeral days, we would head out as early as necessary on a 44-passenger bus, often in civilian clothes or else fatigues with our first-class uniforms and equipment in tow. Often we would change into our duty uniforms at the funeral home, once in the casket display room, or on the bus itself. It being Texas and the Viet Nam war being in full swing, we often had several funerals a week to perform. There was a certain spectrum from the World War graduates through the Viet Nam casualties. The former might involve a local veterans' group and an afterward BBQ or such. The latter were somewhat more emotionally raw as most of us were facing our own deployments in the near future. Two funerals of the latter sort have stayed with me through the years. The first was of a young Private First Class who had been MIA for several months before his remains were recovered. I was on the pallbearer squad that day and when we went to lift the casket, it almost flew up in the air. There was so little of the young soldier left that we totally overestimated the weight we were lifting and almost looked decidedly unprofessional. The other was that of a Negro Specialist 4th Class. I was in the rifle squad that day. In the rendering of military honors, there is a momentary pause between the end of the (21-gun) rifle salute and the beginning of the playing of "Taps". It is a moment of profound silence in most cases. During that moment, the young soldier's mother gave out a yowl from the depths of her grief that so startled me that I almost dropped the rifle out of my hands. That yowl echoes within me still. I'll readily admit that, as a result of my experiences, I became much imbued with a sense of duty and respect to and for our fallen. Hopefully, this year, when our media do their reporting they will show some of the same and let "Taps" be played out in its entirety. It would be nice for a change.

26 I posted this in the last thread, but this one seems more appropriate.   Not long ago I was searching for info about Sam Huff, the 50's and 60's NFL player when I found another Sam Huff.   Army PFC. Sam W. Huff was 18 serving in Baghdad, Iraq when the Humvee she was riding in was hit by an IED. She died of her injuries on 4/17/2007. She is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Like most driven young people she had a plan for her life. But for her it also included serving in the military. The first well-known observance of a Memorial Day-type observance after the Civil War was in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1, 1865. The freedmen cleaned up and landscaped the burial ground, building an enclosure and an arch labeled, "Martyrs of the Race Course." Nearly ten thousand people, mostly freedmen, gathered on May 1 to commemorate the war dead. Involved were about 3,000 school children newly enrolled in freedmen's schools, mutual aid societies, Union troops, black ministers, and white northern missionaries. Most brought flowers to lay on the burial field. Today the site is used as Hampton Park. Years later, the celebration would come to be called the "First Decoration Day" in the North.

My Memorial Day salute goes out to Angel Roldan, Vietnam era Green Beret killed by a car bomb last week in Afghanistan along with three other Dyncorp Instructors and two US Servicemen. Angel had the most freakish blue eyes you ever saw and was one of the nicest people I ever knew. He got me started on Acid Kuba Kuba's (Cigars) of which he would give me one anytime he got one out for himself, and those things aren't cheap. He was one of the good ones. Godspeed my man.

I don't know about Canadians, but I know few Americans know that about 30,000 Canadians volunteered for the US Military during the Vietnam War. I think about 10,000 actually served in VN. but I could be wrong.

 

As for the 10,000 americans that fled to Canada, I'd say the US Military got the better end of that deal.

Considering everything, it's almost a miracle!! She will take a year off, and plans to work on becoming a Red Cross volunteer first responder during that time, before going to GMU. I am recovering from surgery, but doing okay. How are you doing?? Have you finished classes and grading??

73 And now for something completely stupid-- ...but which is a debate in certain quarters: Star Trek or Star Wars, whose ships could beat whom? Now, in the past I have not cared, both worlds being fictional, and this being the thing only fan boys care about (with the Star Wars guys usually seeming more fervent), but I just happened to chance upon a site taking one side (Star Trek, incidentally), and left with the honest opinion someone got too carried away with caring. The basic problem with this argument is that the two fictional universes seemingly have no common reference frame, making relative strength comparisons impossible, esp. given the much lesser emphasis on scientific speak/justification/rationalization in the Lucas-created worlds (not a criticism, it just is an is). I then chanced upon CGI scenes from the remastered Star Trek (I have ony seen one or two episodes--in general I do not think CGI beats old ILM-style modeling for realism, but no one asks me my opinion anyway). The episode was "The Doomsday Machine" (which has really good music). And then it occured to me: 1. The Doomsday Machine destroys panets. 2. The Death Star destroys planets. 3. The Doomsday Machine fired at the Enterprise, presumably with the intention of destroying it. 4. The Death Star II fired at ships, presumably with the intention of destroying them. 5. The Star Wars universe ships were destroyed, with no one remotely acting like they could stand a chance against the Death Star. 6. Both Star Trek ships that fought the Doomsday Machine held their own, defensively, agaist at least a few shots from it. 7. Therefore, the Star Trek universe would win in a head-to-head duel against Star Wars ships. Better shields. Q.E.D. For my next trick, I'll prove scientifically that Han in fact shot first... We now return you to more important stuff, like pron.

I had one such in my infantry squad. He was a strac troop and never failed us on the hunt or in a fight. So whenever I hear someone moaning about the dirtbags who fled north, I just kind of smile to myself and think I sure got the better of that deal.

I know my maternal grandfather was drafted towards the end of the war and was training somewhere in North Carolina at the time when the war in Europe ended.  so he was never sent.

I have no idea about my paternal grandfather.

His active service was with 3rd Brigade 1st Infantry Division , Lai Khe Viet Nam 1967 1968 , yeah during Tet , when they kicked the shit out of the commies , despite what Cronkite said , as well as an advisor to three different South Vietnamese infantry battalions , his second tour ,mostly in Saigon , he was involved with the final prisoner exchange . My service ( carter era navy) was pitiful next to those that have gone before . Here's to them (raises glass) , and those like them . Damn few left . Ya'll morons have a good memorial day . 99 My dad was at Omaha too, irongrampa. He then went to Germany, but would never talk about what he did. He had two Purple Hearts and a bronze star, but refused to say why he got them. Hubby served as a marine artillery officer. I am grateful for both of them.

103 Good friends both, brothers Henry and Jim Baker. Henry was one of the Alamo Scouts (you'll have to look that up) that were transported by the original submarine Nautilus, and paddled a rubber raft ashore at Luzan, 6 months before the invasion. They raised a lot of hell for the Japs, blowing up this and that.
Jim caught a German bullet shortly after D Day, and never recovered full use of his arm. Both became pillars of the community when they returned, great families. Both gone in the last two years. Two very, very good men.

105 @88  Cool Andy.  I can only imagine.  I've never been and want to go visit.  I'm more emotional about the Wall and really want to see it..., I think I'd kinda lose it there even though I don't have a connection to anyone lost in 'Nam... just some of the older guys I served with in the National Guard were in Nam and I had my eyes opened widely talking to normal vets of the war.

An Epiphany really after growing up knowing only what I'd seen on TV or movies and the press wildly anti-war bias.   When I was active duty I bonded with a few vets that worked at one of the airfields I worked at and they had been in Nam.  That's when I learned to completely be disgusted by Hanoi Jane and her ilk and I saw watching shows like MASH in a whole new light.  Not so innocent that show.... not so clever to me ever again.

114 I am thinking about my dad Major John P. Hart, fighter pilot in WWII and Korea.

He grew up hard in Youngstown OH as an orphan during the depression.  He would look up at that sky and see airplanes and thought "Shit ya I wan't to do that!"

He and a buddy hitchhiked from OH to CA March AFB and enlisted.  He soon was mustanged up and got his wings.  Flew during both wars and then was an acrobatic pilot in the 5th AF team called the Falcons that flew demonstrations throughout Asia and Europe.

I asked my dad "Weren't you scared?".  He said "Shit ya kid.  But we did it anyway"

Happy Memorial Day to all of my fellow vets and the people that love them in the Horde!

146 I've told this story before - but it bears repeating.

In 1983 I was sitting in the Airport in Atlanta Ga. waiting for my transfer plane to arrive. There were a lot of military people in uniform striding through the airport and I would read their ribbons as they passed.

A Red Headed Army Major in his dress greens came up to the seats where I was and I looked at his chest. I saw immediately that he had both Combat Infantry and  Airborne Ranger badges and more than the usual one row of medals that all Vietnam vets had.

I saw an Army commendation medal with V for Valor device, a Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters - which meant that he had been wounded three times, and a Legion of Merit medal. I was very surprised to see that; mostly it is Generals who are awarded a legion of merit.

Then I saw that he had a seventh medal on a row all by itself, it was crepe blue with five little stars on it. My eyes got very big - I had never seen one before.

I walked over to where he was sitting and I said "Excuse me Major." to him. He stood up and I shook his hand and said "Thank you, Sir". He looked very confused and said with a puzzled look on his face "Thank me - what did I do?" I answered him "Sir I understand your confusion - its just that I know what that is" nodding toward that seventh ribbon "Thank you sir".

He started crying - no one had ever thanked him before. Here was a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who couldn't imagine why anyone would be thanking him for anything.

Only had my license for the background check and the guy told me to go up front for a second ID. Apparently it's the cheapest fishing license you can get (5 bucks.). Good for you! Practice mostly with the .38's, but be sure to put some .357 through it once in a while just so you are aware of the difference in recoil.  Practice practice practice, and carry the damn thing if you can get a permit for it, it won't do you any good sitting in the gun safe.

This Memorial Day weekend brings both joy and tears for my friendship and service with Sergeant Emmett Horn, a bull riding tough guy from Vidor, Texas.  Emmett was a weapon specialist, and was deployed TDY from Okinawa on Team A1-113 to Ashau, Republic of Vietnam.


On December 23, 1964 Emmett was conducting a contact patrol 8 KM north of Camp Ashau with approximately 40 CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) Vietnamese and 6 Chinese Hmong bodyguards.


The patrol was ambushed from rising terrain and the CIDG force froze and did not counter the attack by moving into the fire and laying down a withering barrage to break the attack.  Emmett was moving down the line of hunkered troops imploring them to react.  He was initially wounded in the gut, and shortly thereafter was fatally shot in the back of the head. 


The surviving American SF forced the CIDG to carry Emmett back to Camp Ashau for evacuation to CONUS. 


Emmett was a very popular man with quick wit, physically powerful, and a great friend.  To learn more about Emmett, please visit and read more about his life.

When Maya Lin designed the Wall, and they built it, I was very interested and kept up with it.  I did not approve, I thought it was not good enough.  Then, some years later, I was in DC and went.  I sobbed like a baby from start to finish as I walked the length of that Wall.  It is one of the most moving monuments I have ever seen.  It will fuck you up, as it should.

192 I do have to say that today is one of my favorite days of the year. Why? Living in Roanoke, VA, on the Friday before Memorial Day we get a long line of special visitors through town when "Rolling Thunder" comes up I-81 and US 220 on their way to DC. The sight and sounds of a close to 10 mile long column of motorcycles riding along US220 to meet up with an even longer column of bikes on I-81 is a sight to behold. The added bonus is knowing that these guys/gals are heading up to DC to make sure that none of the anti-war shitheads does ANYTHING to the Vietnam Memorial. It also shows just how fucked up things have gotten when the icons of the 60's "counter culture" the bikers, are way more patriotic than the members of the President's administration.

My Dad, still with us.  Silver Star, three Purple Hearts.  My brother, Lt. James G. Aubrey,  USAF, not.

Joseph H. Marshall III--family from Canada--I notified and did Survivor Assistance Officer.  Brave family.

Danny, Tommy, Chris and Kim Weber, probably ten deployments between them.  Two gone.

Uncles in the North Atlantic, ETO, Pacific.

All those guys I knew, moving forward, forward, forward.

Went to a Moving Wall and the one in DC.  Hard, hard thing to do.  Can't imagine the design was contentious at first.

There are two towns in Holland with streets named after my father's division--Timberwolves--and one with a street named after his division commander, Terry Allen.

Street in Carentan named after the 101st Airborne.   Rose window in the church in Ste. Mere Eglise, fixed after the war, the Holy Mother and Infant, flanked by American paratroopers so that the congregation, when they lift their eyes, can see whence came their deliverance.

Families near American cemeteries adopt our graves, flowers and the whole thing.  That's a long time to maintain a self-imposed obligation.

Lots of people remember.
