Washington Officials Involved With IRS Targeting of Tea Party Groups
— Ace

Well, the initial lie survived nightfall, but only just.

(I have to break embargo here.)

Internal Revenue Service officials in Washington and at least two other offices were involved in the targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, making clear the effort reached well beyond the branch in Cincinnati that was initially blamed, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

IRS officials at the agencyÂ’s Washington headquarters sent queries to conservative groups asking about their donors and other aspects of their operations, while officials in the El Monte and Laguna Niguel offices in California sent similar questionnaires to tea party-affiliated groups.

...

Lois G. Lerner, who oversees tax-exempt groups for the IRS, told reporters on Friday the “absolutely inappropriate” actions were undertaken by “front-line people” working in Cincinnati to target groups with “tea party,” “patriot” or “9/12” in their names.

...

“For the IRS to say it was some low-level group in Cincinnati is simply false,” said Cleta Mitchell, a partner in the law firm Foley & Lardner LLP who sought to communicate with IRS headquarters about the delay in granting tax-exempt status to True the Vote.

Moreover, details of the IRSÂ’s efforts to target conservative groups reached the highest levels of the agency in May 2012, far earlier than has been disclosed....

...

Orrin Hatch wrote to the IRS to raise these concerns-- and was given a horseshit reply.

“Knowing what we know now,” he added, “the IRS was at best being far from forth coming, or at worst, being deliberately dishonest with Congress.”

9 You know, in a large for-profit organization, when it gets this bad, the board fires the CEO, hires a new one, and the CEO cleans house and brings in a new team.

And that's what happened in 2008, which means we are forever screwed.

16 Looking at the sidebar headline about Obamacare cost increase estimates, sincere question: could the Dems who voted for Obamacare sue the O administration under bait-and-switch laws?

Clearly, Zero and his cohorts lied, lied, lied and then lied more to sell Obamacare. Dumb Dems voted for it, whether out of loyalty, stupidly believing O's lies, or under pressure. The reasons really don't matter. But, could they actually sue in court? Same would perhaps apply to John Roberts, if he believed the O admin lied during the Obamacare court case.

I guess what i'm really asking is, how can this (or any) administration be held accountable for outright lying to get a law passed?

I know this sounds dangerously naive...but it's just fundamentally wrong.

It's possible that we're just seeing a perfect storm here.  Getting called out on Gosnell appears to have made the media a bit self-conscious in this area.  The IRS is universally loathed, and thus more likely to draw attention from the media even when the evil conservatives are the target.  And it's just come out that the government was focusing on AP reporters (hardly a conservative group), whichi might have caused a "circle the wagons" response.

82 I don't see this as squirrels. I see it as the dam giving out. Bill Clinton prevented the power vacuum in 2 ways: First, he made his VP the next nominee. I don't think there's any way Biden will be the D nominee. Much more likely Hillary and she's all tied up with Benghazi. I still say that's why all of this is breaking. She cannot be harmed so if there's going to be a scandal, it has to be one she isn't tied to. Second, Bill made sure Hillary had a political future, she was running for NY Sen before he left office. In this way, Bill ensured that his entourage had good jobs in the future and had to go to him for their future success. Obama has no great gifts to bestow anymore. He himself will be fabulously wealthy and Jarrett, et al. may have a position for life as his personal valets, but otherwise, very few. It's time to choose up sides.

89 If it did start in the field offices and perculate UP then the field people were working directly for another, outside group. That group could only be OFA. If it started in 2010, that's when the Tea Party groups started organizing for the fall elections after the passage of Obamacare. The Dems from top down where calling groups racist, dangerous and violent. I wouldn't be surprised if the Administration, the Dems, and OFA, with some media groups had and organized, concerted course of action.

100 I suspect that a lot of Dems don't like the Obamas and want to see them neutered for the next three years.  Expect the leaks to continue to spring.  Obama had to win, Romney would have undone a lot of progressive policies that they hope the next three years will cement, but it's becoming very obvious that the White House is run by grad students at best and the Keystone Kops at worst.  The best thing that could happen for them is to spank the WH hard, give red state Dems cover to distance themselves from Obama, and then hope that they can hold on in 2014 and win in 2016.

117 #32  willow,  I lived through Watergate.  I was in my late 20's and paying attention, not a little kid.

For a long time Woodward and Bernstein were ignored by the media.  Drip by drip the evidence came out.  The press finally got on board,  but it took almost 2 1/2 years before Nixon resigned.

GOP congressmen and senators were defending Nixon at first,  until the tapes came out.  Once it as known there was proof through the tapes,  GOP elected officials jumped ship,  with Senator Howard Baker finally telling Nixon he had to resign,  because he was going to be impeached.

I have been thinking about this while remembering Watergate.   A lot of the pattern is the same (IRS abuse, lying to the people, enemies list, etc.).  The difference is that we are in a war with the Islamicists and we have Muslim Brotherhood infiltrating the government.

I really do have hope,  because if stuff is as bad as I think it is,  someone in the intelligence agencies knows,  and those people take their jobs seriously.  Picking a fight with the CIA was the worst thing Obama could do.  And Petraeus, who doesn't have any love for Obama,  is lurking outside the Beltway,  waiting,  as well.

No one wants to be the last one who goes to jail or gets fired for Obama.

And the DOJ deciding it was a good idea to seize the phone records of the AP and other media outlets goes a long way towards jamming the control rod mechanism. 159 Thinking ahead to a wider investigation, what the investigators will want to ascertain is what I believe may have been a possibility of existing--a 2010 newsletter or email subscription, kind of a "confidential briefing", sorta like "Journolist" but coming from Democratic operatives of the Axelrod-persuasion, telling guys in government sympathetic to the cause that they pretty much knew the Tea Parties were a bunch of corporate fronts, had the hard data, but nothing could be presented in the public arena, but that nevertheless everyone should consider themselves forewarned, and within the limits of appropriate job actions, not let the fraud be perpetrated on the public. In other words, there was an Iago. The investigation should find out if this theory is true. That is what to focus on, not in a witchunt mode, but since the Congressional net can be made widespread, investigators will be able to ask enough honest people "did this thing exist?" that a definitive answer one way or the other should be able to be had.

Nixon was facing a Democratic Senate and House, as well as a good sized group of liberal Republicans on the Hill who hated his guts.

Obama has the Senate, and after the 2014 election may have the House too. No way a 2/3rds majority to impeach in the Senate comes out of that, and I doubt even a majority to vote the articles out of the House.

The O ain't going nowhere.

It would be nice if the whole country (left and right) took this as a chance to wake up   --  We need a tax code that keeps fucking congress scum out of everybody's business.

183 Senator Ted Cruz says the IRS scandal “harkens back to the days of Richard Nixon,” and proves that President Obama keeps an “enemies list.” “This is part of a distressing pattern of the Obama administration of being less than honest with the American people and using the machinery of government to target their political opponents,” Cruz tells National Review in an interview. “It harkens back to the days of Richard Nixon and maintaining a political enemies list and treating the federal government as a tool to exact the administration’s retribution,” he adds. “I believe the president owes an accounting to the American people,” the senator says, “when senior administration officials speak directly to the American people and utter flat-out falsehoods, as Jay Carney did when he said the State Department had never edited the talking points, when in fact ABC News has reported there were a dozen edits from the State Department of those talking points; or as the IRS did, when the head of the IRS testified before Congress that there was no targeting of political appointees when senior officials at the IRS knew for a fact they had been doing precisely that – targeting conservative groups, targeting tea-party groups, targeting Jewish groups, targeting pro-Israel groups, engaging in conduct that is completely inappropriate for an agency of the federal government.” Ted Cruz is looking better and better to me

Are we really supposed to believe that the “smartest man in the room,” the “Chicago Jesus,” the “Magic Negro” had some part of his administration running rogue for 3 years without somebody calling the White House to find out what was going on ?

Are we to believe that President Obama had been hoodwinked ?

Are we to believe that President Obama had been had ?

Are we to believe that President Obama had been took ?

Are we to believe that President Obama had been led astray, run amok ?

Are we to believe that President Obama had been bamboozled ?

191 #162  T.  and others who have commented on this,  I think this came through OFA rather than from the White House.

OFA has data on every member,  including their place of employment.

A little email to select OFA members asking them to defend the president from the Tea Party and those who use phrases common to those groups,  would all some of those Obamabots would need.

I would be happy neutralizing OFA,  as I think it is a mechanism for Obama to keep control after he leaves office.  That is,  of course,  if the money isn't used to promote Michelle as the presidential candidate.

There was no indication of the planeÂ’s mission, the circumstances of its crash or of the pilotÂ’s death. Earlier, Turkish military sources said that contact was lost with the Air Force plane over a mountainous area in Osmaniye province in southern Turkey close to the border with Syria. The statement said the pilot radioed in to say he was ejecting before contact was lost. Turkey's NTV television said the pilot ejected safely from the plane. That report was never confirmed.

So day, a firefight erupts. Unbelievable gun battle. So she says she just gets as low to the ground as she can, and tries not to get shot. All of the sudden she hears her name being called and then "We're the United States Military, we're here to take you home." Guy scoops her up and takes off running. They eventually get to a safe place and put her down. They start an immediate physical on her, get iv's with fluid and antibiotics into her. She said her colleague asks "Do you know who this is?" "Uhh...US Military." "This SEAL Team 6." She said she was just laying there, thinking my God, these are the men that got Bin Laden. Why would they come get me? I'm a nobody. Then a noise is heard outside. The men form a circle around her, and then 2 of them lay fully on top of her to form an actual human shield. They got her out. She's home now. What fucking men such as these?

Posted by: Jane D'oh at May 13, 2013 09:24 PM (lVPtV)

No, Jane, this was a safety issue on the Keurigs.  I tried all the fixes, mine had the "no fixums".  Basically, after reading through pages and pages of reviews, I found a post on Amazon from a systems design engineer who said there is a solenoid in the Keurigs that fails because it is actually an automotive part--not designed for use with liquids.  The steam drips on the solenoid and shorts it out.  Keurig knows about the flaw and keeps using it--because people keep buying another one after they get used to the convenience.  The engineer contacted them himself and got nada.  He threw his away because of the danger of fire.

408 I honestly don't think the institutional and academic left and the culture around them understands the outrage over Benghazi, just like they didn't understand Mogadishu. It really raises nothing significant for them - these people (the military) aren't part of their group of "people that matter," and the word "honor" is just a dictionary entry to them. I was in conversations with people over Mogadishu that just completely didn't get it, it was a bunch of alien concepts to them. Honestly I don't talk to them much anymore, so I haven't really gone over Benghazi with anyone like that - because I have no patience anymore. But we really are alien to each other.

Benghazi - Sept 2012
IRS - May 2012
AP - May 2012

This is a tactic. Teh Won couldn't be bulletproof forever, so they drop everything they've got on one day and overload the system. Maybe one sticks, and they can blame it on some low level guy. A mid level guy if someone in the House gets feisty. Meanwhile, the other two bleed away.

Bengazi is the real story, we can't take our eyes off the ball.  It makes Watergate look like a Mother Goose story.  They lied for political gain...or rather, for political defense.  And as a result, there was no military response, and the perps remain free to attack us again.

Obama successfully deflected the attack for today.  We can't let him get away with it.

Yeah, almost forgot about Fast and Furious. It's absolutely amazing. This "president" has now

1) run guns to drug cartels in Mexico resulting in hundreds/thousands of deaths
2) abandoned US diplomatic and military personnel in a hostile land
3) spied on the press with the intent of silencing reporters
4) used its coercive powers to punish/intimidate its political adversaries

Not to mention spending this country into more debt than we can ever hope to repay and using Chicago tactics to ruin this country's healthcare system.

And yet only now, suddenly, 4 years into his reign, everyone is JUST NOW realizing this? I don't trust it. Why? I know this is what I want, but it just doesn't make sense.

504 Just a thought, but if we're to learn something from this, could it be the timing of scandals? That when you piecemeal the information over months, like Bengazi or F&F, the media has time to compartmentalize the arguments and contrive responses that, individually, sound reasonable but as a whole sound ridiculous. With the IRS scandal, the fact that this is all falling at once prevents the media from contriving a persuasive (to the LIV) argument defending the administration. Is our diligence in arguing against this government malfeasance our own worst enemy? Should we instead let it fester, like a pus-filled infection, and when it pops, revel in the putrid...ehm...you get the point.

Posted by: Adam B at May 13, 2013 06:41 PM (w8ZpT)

505 Someone needs to parade the actual people from charitable orgs "audited" early and often, to explain just what the special "audits" they had to undergo entailed, and how they compromised their ability to effectively advocate their ideas, e.g. what they had to search for, money spent on bookkeepers, lawyers, accountants, distractions of time, uncertainty, missing deadlines, etc. Because the spin I hear now on the MSM is of the IRS admitting that "certain conservative groups were checked more often to make sure that they complied with charitable rules" etc. i.e. as though an audit from the IRS is just something that every 501c3 should have (like a colonoscopy) though its just that not all of us are lucky enough to get that done. The 47% low information, non-productive segment of the population has no clue that imposing a regime of arbitrary "compliance" in a byzantine, regulatory environment, is in fact the ability of a bureaucrat to hand out discretionary punishment. We are, in far too many ways, living out the dystopic vision of Ayn Rand: "There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." Will the truth resonate with enough of the right people, in the political process, before we face a 1776 type moral crisis?

506 And F**K Pro Publica up the rear with rusty barbed wire. Some public interest journos they pretend to be. You know what a great scoop it is to see the IRS leaking confidential info? Imagine if they had actually covered THAT instead of waiting till now to chime in. Journalists used to do things like that. What a novel concept.

Posted by: Lemmiwinks at May 13, 2013 07:02 PM (SkyIE)

509 I suspect that what happened in this scandal may have been zealous Obamabots in the IRS knowing what their über-boss wanted without being told, and acting accordingly.  Apologies for "going Godwin," but British historian and Hitler biographer Ian Kershaw speaks of  this type of phenomenon, with committed Nazi officials "working towards the Führer," i.e., taking initiatives that they knew would please him -- indeed, competing to please him -- rather than only following specific orders from on high.  This classification of course doesn't make the present scandal any less disgusting or enraging, it just reinforces the importance of the Obama cult of personality and the well-understood-by-its-imbibers, narrow range of lockstep "progressive" ideology.

515 You're right, NYC Parent, to bring up the point about cost. I've filed several 1023 applications (that's the IRS form for recognition of exemption) and the average fees are around $15k. The longest I've waited for the granting of the provisional exemption status (there's a 5 year "probationary" period before permanent exemption is granted) is nine months. If the IRS jerks your chain for a few years, the costs can escalate dramatically. Not only does it become expensive for the organization, but it keeps attorneys from wanting to represent these types of clients.

516 "What about their stunningly beautiful goddess, Mooch?"

But not before she pockets millions of dollars in her severance package.

517 Amazing how many different field offices just happen to have the same rogue operation going with the home office's full knowledge, but it's not their policy, eh?

Every single IRS employee who knew about this and participated or failed to report it should be fired with prejudice - never again eligible for federal employment, PERIOD - and prosecuted if they broke laws in the process, which many must have.  NO MERCY.

522 The line cutting thing reminds me of the Monkey/cucumber study-

Monkeys get Cukes handed to them and are happy til one monkey gets grapes. Then the cuke monkeys get pissed. Somehow this was interpreted as monkeys having a moral understanding of fairness.
Look again. You get something through no effort of your own and  you are grateful until somebody else gets something better through no effort of their own. Now you are mad.

It's not the fairness of monkeys that was proven; it's envy.

I don't care about the rich paying to cut the line as long as it doesn't inconvenience me. And I'm pro the handicapped making some money from it.

523 The GOP LOSERship apparently doesn't get it when it comes to how left wing activist groups work these days.

Modern guerilla burrocratic politics don't operate on the LOSERship's old school top down pyramid of leadership -- Top-down is an antiquated burrocratic model with about as much relevancy to modern left wing guerilla political warfare as medieval armies marching in formation into battle with pikes and swords.  Rather the left wing thugs infiltrate the workplace via unions and green groups at the worker-bee level.  They largely operate under the radar to further their left wing goals -- a tweek here and there is all it takes to redirect a burrocracy onto an altered left wing course.

It's also typical for these groups to twist the system so they get their much of their organizing operations funded by taxpayer dollars.

It's reached the point that they pretty much control the hiring and enforcement apparatus, so that only committed lefties or weak ass sheeple (who will not get in the way) need apply.
