— Ace Well, it's strongly implied.
“I’m a complete libertarian. I think it’s very, very dangerous. I really mean that. I think the smoking ban is a tip of an iceberg of society — the leaders of society telling us how to be,” he said during an interview on HuppPost Live“I think it’s not their business. I think it is their business to tell us to care for and respect each other and each other’s happiness and each other’s health, and we are responsible enough to do that,” he adds.
The Three Musketeers have all expressed some kind of conservative/libertarian politics. Jeremy Irons is the third. I'm referring to the Three Musketeers in Randal Wallace's Man in the Iron Mask, a so-so 1998 remake.
Athos, John Malkovich, almost punched a guy for suggesting America deserved 9/11, shortly after the attacks. And he almost did this in France, where he lives. So, he was pushing against local weather patterns.
Porthos, Gerald Depardieu, quit his native France to move to Russia (???!!) to escape the socialist's millionaire tax.
And now Aramis, Jeremy Irons, outs himself as a full-on libertarian.
Randall Wallace himself has been accused of... well, a Salon critic claimed his movie Secretariat was....
"[S]ymbolic window dressing for a quasi-inspirational fantasia of American whiteness and power."
And what's worse:
Wait. There is yet another sinister subtext to be exposed in the film. O'Hehir mentions that Randall Wallace, who directed the film, "is one of mainstream Hollywood's few prominent Christians, and has spoken openly about his faith and his desire to make movies that appeal to 'people with middle-American values'."
Dear Lord, how did we let this happen?
That link is to Roger Ebert criticizing how kookoocrazy Salon's movie idiot is. When you've lost Roger Ebert, you've gone too far.

quasi-inspirational fantasia???
Ace needs to borrow that phrase for one of his movie reviews. "Dies Hard is a quasi-inspirational fantasia of white male violence" or something like that.

Irons is an odd case. As I recall, he has publicly self-identified as socialist for many years. Kind of old to FINALLY get some common sense, but I'm not complaining.
As an aside, Randall Wallace also directed We Were Soldiers.

I don't know this man's personal politics, but moving away from a recklessly crushing tax doesn't require libertarian bona fides. Progressives do these things all the time in fact, move to a place, vote blue for 20 years, marvel at the high taxes and bankrupt state, move to a red state and repeat.

He paused to clean his back teeth, breaking his line of thought for a moment.
“I have a grandmother of a friend of mine in Greece, who grew tobacco all her life, that’s what they did, in northern Greece, they grew tobacco,” he continued.

While I appreciate Athos, Aramis, and Porthos weighing in on the side of libertarianism/fuck Bloomberg, I am afraid that appreciation is a bit overshadowed by the pretty obvious fact that those three dudes are right behind the gay marriage thing, pushing hard, like Vikings a Muslim in a sheep fold.

The Trotskyites have finished the job they started, against Ronald Reagan and Bob Heinlein in the the California Democratic State Committee in the 1960s.
The Trotskyites and the Chicago corrupticrats have purged the Democratic Party.

Salon does.
Also, in British English "libertarian" usually means "non-moralizing socialist." So, not a feminist, basically. And he probably doesn't hate Jews for "anti-imperialist" reasons or oppose "capitalism" for aristocratic shops-are-for-poor-people (and run by JOOS) reasons.
But maybe he's using the American word...which carries various shades of "not a Republican," and not much else. Anymore.

Interesting story. I was working as an IT consultant at Nabisco in East Hanover, NJ AFTER they had merged with RJ Reynolds. This was post smoking ban in workplaces, but, prior to Big Tobacco losing their case. There was no smoking ban there, those tobacco people kept the air blue, some of them five-six packs a day blue. You could buy a pack of cigarettes in the company story for less than a dollar--because no taxes had been collected yet and there was a loophole. I tentatively asked someone how they were getting away with it. Seems the tobacco folks told the city fathers, hey, we are doing you guys a favor keeping these jobs here in NJ, you don't want them, we will pack it all up and move it to a tobacco state, but, first, we will lay off all these NJ folks, offer no relocation packages to anyone who wants to hang onto their jobs and move to that tobacco state with us, and leave you with the problem of replacing all those jobs. If that is what you want, intil we shut the doors here, we will just pay the d@mn fines, we have GOT THE MONEY. Seems the city fathers gave them a variance.
