John McCain Is Not Exactly Winning Many Converts These Days
— JohnE.

John McCain, not content to keep his hissy fit confined to the floor of the Senate, shoots his mouth off to HuffPo reporter.

While McCain has been a fierce critic of the Obama administration, he has also tangled with members of his own party, particularly the new crop of lawmakers including Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), darlings of the conservative grassroots.

When I asked him if "these guys" -- having just mentioned Amash, Cruz and Paul by name -- are a "positive force" in the GOP, McCain paused for a full six seconds.

"They were elected, nobody believes that there was a corrupt election, anything else," McCain said. "ButI also think that when, you know, it's always the wacko birds on right and left that get the media megaphone."

Leaving aside the unprovoked "wacko bird" insult, what an absolutely bizarre way to frame a response to a rather innocuous question. "Corrupt elections"? What the hell is he talking about and what is he implying? Maybe it's nothing and he just stumbled over an answer, but it's very odd.

Paul, like him or not, has at least tried to remain respectful during this dust-up.

“You know, I think he’s just on the wrong side of history, and the wrong side of this argument, really,” Paul said.
...
“You know I treat Sen. McCain with respect, and I don’t think I always get the same in return. But I would say I do think he’s a war hero. He deserves respect for spending years and years in prison during the Vietnam War. But I would say it doesn’t mean his ideas always trump everybody else’s.”
I can't believe I'm even typing this, but Dick Durbin was able to challenge Rand Paul with more class and respect than either Graham or McCain has been able to muster up in the last two days. It should also be noted that after McCain and Graham took to the floor claiming Paul's question didn't even deserve an answer.... the White House answered his question about an hour later. Great job, guys.

Very disappointing. But, of course, we're all used to it by now. Wacko birds, that we are.

Update: Allah has some more McCain quotes that will drive you insane at HotAir.

2 Dick Durbin was able to challenge Rand Paul with more class and respect than either Graham or McCain has been able to muster up in the last two days. Of course he did. Sen. Paul's not a threat to Durbin's power base (yet). He is a very direct threat to the GOP status quo, and that's what has McGraham's join panties in a twist.

32 His Vietnam service might've counted for something once. But since Johnny Mac was too big a coward to run a tough, hard-fought campaign in 2008 against King Putt, for fear his media buddies might've said something bad about him, he damaged his country far more than if he'd turned traitor in Vietnam. Fark him. Oh, and that goes for Romney too. I don't want to hear another word out of either one ever again.

McCain goes after other people in the Republican Party because it gets him attention on TV.  That's what being a Maverick is all about.  Rand Paul is a threat to his TV time.  Paul just out -mavericked the maverick.

So now Paul is a wacky bird.

Most of McCain's kids (all adults) are pretty good people, with the exception of that bimbo Meggy.  One son was at the Naval Academy, and has graduated. One son was a Marine grunt in Iraq and walked point for his platoon - pretty good stuff.  One daughter runs his wife's beer distributor business in Arizona, which is a pretty good piece of business- she's sharp.

And then there is Meghan.  I used to think she was the exception, but now, I begin to think that she is indeed her father's daughter.

55 The whole thing is disappointing. First--Americans have no more reason to fear the RPA program than they have to fear a- F-16. I hate to oversimplify it--but there it is. Rand Paul called the program a-- "kill program". I've read that almost 90% of the missions--and/or flights are to gain reconnaissance. Also the RPA program it can be argued has saved-- many American lives. It can be argued that when considering both-- blood and treasure the RPA program has been one of our most successful programs in fighting the War on Terror. Now it is feared by the American public as a tool of oppression, and the future of the program might be endangered. Funny thing is--*if* you are a Deficit Hawk and interested in preserving the lives of American infantry the RPA program should be one that you --promote--not demonize.

I don't think the GOP establishment is in direct collusion with the Dems, but after these outbursts and the bad optics of dining with President Sportin' Life, one could make a case. THE GOP MUST BE TAKEN BACK OR IT MUST DIE. NOW.

You're being disingenuous. 101 55 Now it is feared by the American public as a tool of oppression, and the future of the program might be endangered. I don't think anyone fears a piece of American technology being used outside our borders in defense of this great Republic. What folks fear is this Administration, and their inability or unwillingness to do practically anything within the letter and spirit of the law if it doesn't suit them. What folks fear is giving up even more of their 4th and 5th Amendment rights to the Organizing for America permanent campaign apparatus. They fear the data mining and the wanton abuse of their data. They fear these drones being used to collect even more data - to support the agenda of this Administration. These folks within the beltway aren't in the "We the People" business. They're in the "We the ruling elite say how you the people will spend your money, use your cars, buy your health insurance...ad infinitem" business. And folks like that with an unlimited budget and capacity to deploy anything at their disposal in their quest to never let a crisis go to waste? Well, in the immortal probable words of one of our founding fathers...."Fuck that shit. We should be shooting by now." LiB

115 McCain and Graham hate Rand Paul, Cruz, Lee & Amash because they know that if these guys ever get in charge the Teddy Roosevelt-progressive wing of the GOP is doomed and that means that progressivism itself is doomed, the only reason the progressives keep winning is that they control both major political parties, whether McCain and Graham like it or not that is exactly what will eventually happen because progressivism is a dead end road who's last stop is Dictatorville.

The MSM can only hide this fact for so long, truth has a way of making itself known.

Sometime about 1998 or 1999 McCain checked in his Patriotic, pro American Constitutionalist Gear and went full McCain centric, Pro McCain, McCainstitutionalist.

He hasn't shown much in the way of principle in quite some time- unless, of course, you count getting onesself on "Meet the Press" often enough to be a member of the coffee club a "principle".

For some reason, Lindsay Graham finds this pretty attractive, and has stuck himself so far head and shoulders of McCain's rear that the only time we hear from South Carolina's senior Senator is when Arizona's senior Senator farts.

are smaller and harder to detect. There's also no physical risk to the operator other than carpal tunnel syndrome.

The result--a hell fire missile exploding--is not hard to detect.

Also a F-16 pilot isn't going to be that much more tasked.
Posted by: tasker at March 08, 2013 05:08 PM

You're deflecting the whole argument anyway.

This isn't about whether drones or F-16's are more efficient

It's about whether the Obama administration believes that it can order either to kill an American citizen on American soil without due process, just because they can claim that said American is a "threat"

Suppose a bunch of war vets go on a camping and shooting trip, and Big Sis tells TFG that she believes they're plotting to overthrow the government

Are you OK with TFG ordering a drone strike or a F-16 strike on them? That's the point

If you keep arguing the efficiency aspects while ignoring legalities, you're just concern trolling at that point

I assume you mean "a difference".

I can't help that 4M (or whatever number) stayed home out of a misguided sense that there was no difference.  Comments about there being no difference certainly don't help to dispel the misimpression, though.  Again, would Rubio, Cruz or Paul be in the Democratic party?  No!  That puts the lie to the proposition.

Romney did get 1.8 million fewer, Obama got 8.5 million fewer than in 2008. Romney got more states than McCain. As it turns out, they were both clusterfuck elections. Who knew? But there was no massive plot to stay home, just less overall turnout. Relatively speaking, Romney did *better*, just still lost.

If Lindsay Graham was the Senator from Maine, I would bitch, whine, complain, and yet still accept. But we are talking SOUTH CAROLINA. I was in Charleston recently- those people talk about the Civil War, and then discuss when they will try it again! SOUTH CAROLINA can, and should, do better.

194 110 This wasn't about "the RPA program." Drones were incidental to the actual question, which is this: does the US Government have the authority to assassinate an American Citizen on US Soil?

That was the primary question but Sen. Paul did devote some time to the GWOT, the use of drones overseas, the Anwar al-Aulaqi case, and the efficiency of drones. He mentioned the second and third at least three times. So no, that was not his main subject, but he did discuss his concerns regarding the other issues.

199 Wacko birds.

Well, what do you call it when someone goes on a 13-hour rant demanding an answer to a nonsensical question which is already settled law?

Because according to John Yoo, it was never in question - and he should know since he authored the AG opinion under Bush confirming the status on the demand of Democrats.  That Eric Holder and Rand Paul may have been ignorant of this fact only makes them fools and incompetents.

Besides, since ALL armed drones are operated by the military and not by CIA, how does it make sense to filibuster the DCI nominee over the "question" in the first place?

But every grandstanding huckster since Barnum has found plenty of willing and eager suckers, why should Paul be different?

202 This is the section in question: is objecting to your government or the policies of your government - the policy of your government sympathizing with the enemy? Some were openly sympathetic. Nobody will ever forget Jane Fonda sniveling around with North Vietnamese armored guns and it was despicable. That's one thing if you want to try her for treason, but are you going to just drop a drone, a hell-fired missile on Jane Fonda? Are you going to drop a missile on those at Kent state? Kent state was not good, but in some ways it was accidental since they were shooting over the heads of these people. But can you imagine, we have gone from a country that was rightfully upset about the deaths at Kent state to a country that is going to say, if your country and you're rabble-rousing because you don't like the government's foreign policy or government's war actions that you are sympathizing? See, there are a lot of questions that aren't being asked because sympathizing appears to be used as a standard for the drone strike program. We actually had students apparently during the Vietnamese war who were raising funds for the Viet cong. That sounds like treason. Sounds like something, when you're fighting an enemy and you're comforting the enemy, that does sound like treason. I have no problem with some people being tried for treason. But they don't get a hell-fired missile sent to their house. There is, though, a difference between sympathizing and taking up arms. Most people around here who want to justify no rules, America is a battlefield, no limits to war, they really want to blur it all together. Because it's easier to say, oh, you don't want to stop anybody who is shooting at Americans. But it's not true. I think lethal force can be used against those engaged in lethal force. What troubles me about the drone strike program is that quite a few - I don't know the number - "The Wall Street Journal" says the bulk of the attacks in Pakistan have been signature attacks, meaning: nobody named and nobody specifically identified, and that civilians aren't really counted because anybody, any male between the age of 16 and 50 is a combatant unless otherwise proven. But if those are the standards, I think we need to be alarmed. And I think there is a difference between sympathizing and taking up arms. Transcript Rand Paul filibuster

211 Leaving aside the unprovoked "wacko bird" insult, what an absolutely bizarre way to frame a response to a rather innocuous question. "Corrupt elections"? What the hell is he talking about and what is he implying? - He is emphasizing that they only have a technical, legal right to their positions, as a result of formally valid election. Nothing else. He's implying that conservatives have no moral right to exist let alone occupy any place of power. That is the standard leftist view, and he agrees.

212 205 McCain, Graham, Boehner and the rest are part of the power machine that has to go. - They are all for mass immigration and forced integration, that is eliminating the whites by swamping them and forcing them to integrate, while non-whites are free to play us-vs.-them games. This is white genocide, or in practical political terms this is the end of the Republican base or its leadership. One or the other will go; the politicians will finish getting rid of the people and electing a new people, or the people will get rid of the leaders and find other leaders who won't support this policy. The reason that sounds melodramatic is that the actual policy is stone crazy. It's abnormal for a political party to go along with getting rid of its own supporters, but that is what is happening.
