Karl: It Would Take a Miracle to Screw Up the Pryor-Cotton Race
Hans Gruber: You Asked For a Miracle? I Give You The G. O. P.

— Ace

Okay, so, the RNSC jumped on Pryor's newfound devotion to Jesus, or, as Pryor calls him, "The Jay Man," contrasting his recent ad with previous statements averring (when convenient) that the Bible should not be used to inform political choices.

Actually, that seems perfectly reasonable to me. If Pryor previously claimed that the Bible shouldn't guide his votes, it is perfectly fair to point out his hypocrisy in now waving around the Good Book to help him out in a political campaign.

But I guess they didn't clear this with the candidate Tom Cotton. Or something. I don't know. The Pryor campaign has claimed the RNSC is "questioning mah faith!!!!," and the Cotton campaign is now agreeing: Yes, you questioned his faith, and that's horrible. Stop questioning people's faith.

RSC communications director Brad Dayspring emailed reporters to say that statement contradicts one Pryor made last year, however, when he said the Bible "is really not a rulebook for political issues" and that "everyone can see it differently."

"So is the Bible Mark Pryor's compass, providing the 'comfort and guidance to do what's best for Arkansas?' Or is it really not a good rule book for political issues and decisions made in the Senate? Guess it depends on which Mark Pryor that you ask," Dayspring said.

Cotton's campaign ripped Dayspring's remarks.

"That is an incredibly bizarre and offensive email from the NRSCÂ’s press secretary. We should all agree that America is better off when all our public officials in both parties have the humility to seek guidance from God," Cotton campaign spokesman David Ray told The Hill.

ItÂ’s an unusual break for Cotton from the NRSC, which has provided strong backing for his campaign while regularly attacking Pryor.

Pryor's campaign seized on the controversy to strike at Cotton.

"It's frankly despicable that Congressman Cotton's Washington allies are manipulating quotes to question the sincerity of Mark's religious beliefs," said Pryor campaign manager Jeff Weaver. "Tom Cotton needs to step up and denounce these shameful attacks on Mark Pryor's faith."

To me, a secular guy, the RNSC attack seemed perfectly fair game. Pryor is plainly trying to have it both ways here. When he casts votes that offend the religious, he says the Bible shouldn't inform public policy. When he's about to get voted out of office, he's on the air saying Jesus is his Copilot.

But I guess maybe... among Arkansans, questioning someone's actual religiosity (even when there's a fair justification for questioning it) is considered dirty pool and out-of-bounds?

I don't know. But I know there's a botch here. Somehow this Fat Ass Elmer Gantry Motherf***er has turned his despicable "Re-Elect Me Because God Wants You To n' Stuff" ad into a referendum on whether his opponent sufficiently respects religious faith.

My husband and I are NOT planning to vote for our republican congressman Mike Coffman next year (due primarily to his planned vote for amnesty (yeah, I'm watching you Coffman), but also to his lack of clear leadership on small government principals).

94 I have actually been to Arkansas - Camp Ozark, ftw! - so I can attest that what Cotton has done, makes some sense in that state.

The average conservative in Arkansas, if the counselors and kids at Ozark are representative, takes Christianity very seriously indeed. As in: he believes that Noah's Ark was real. He thinks that evolution == Darwinism - that modern biology is, in fact, a cult and a lie; he thinks that Charles Darwin recanted at his deathbed.

As for the Arkansas opinion upon those 1980s soi-disant evangelists known worldwide as religious frauds - Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker and on and on - their souls are "between them and God". I didn't know what all this meant at the time, but I'm going to take a stretch here and guess that this meant that the Arkansasians (or whatever) figure that, even if Bakker liked it in the butt and Swaggart was into bitchez and ho's; at least these missionaries were bringing otherwise-lost souls to Christ.

You might not like how the minds of the Arkansas Christian voters work. But, that's how they work. And that's why it doesn't help Republicans to mock the faith of Arkansas politicians. Even if it's fake. Maybe especially because it's fake. God's word is still being preached, you know?

96 Cotton ran at the first sign of a fight. What Dayspring said is demonstrably true and showed some of the spirit that has been sadly lacking from the GOP.

Hopefully, this dies down, or we're going to get Akin 2.0. (and don't start about Akin being a lousy candidate, etc., etc. The amount of friendly fire Akin took made a bad situation worse. It would have been best if Akin owned up, which he did, and then everyone shut up about it, which they didn't do)

Good call Gomer, start a fight over Pryor's religious bonafides to avoid being the next Akin. Are you posting from a LIV parody account? If so, well done. You captured the tone and intellect of a Hot Airtard almost perfectly.

111 As for the Arkansas opinion upon those 1980s soi-disant evangelists known worldwide as religious frauds - Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker and on and on - their souls are "between them and God". *** It's these folks who make me admire Rev. Billy Graham all the more. He realized the importance of his message to the extent that he wouldn't even get on an elevator alone with a woman to lessen the risk that someone would try to weaken his message.

Until 2010, the Dems controlled both houses and every state-wide elected office except John Boozeman's seat. At the local level in most parts, you don't run for office unless you are a D. I rarely get to vote for things like mayor or county judge because there are no R candidates, so the primary decides everything. Pryor has been elected to every position because of his daddy. Cotton is a one-termer from the House. if he pulls it off, it will be abloodbath across the country. Short of that, he has a chance, but I don't think its a good one.

Future predictions:

- Dingy gets his 60 in 2014.  It also means that, without seating any of the Senators elected in 2016, the Rats will have a quorum.

- In 2017, before they seat the incoming Senators, Dingy changes the Senate rules to allow a simple majority to officially change any rule.

- In the lame duck between the election that tosses the Rats out of the majority and the swearing-in of said Senators, Dingy reinstates the filibuster, requires 2/3rds majority of all possible Senators (not just 2/3rds of the seated Senators) to overrule the chair, and requires 2/3rds majority of all possible Senators to change the rules.

Fuck you very much, NRSC.

  Pryor should be toast.

If you like your plan you can keep your plan.  If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor.  This plan will reduce the cost of insurance by 2500 dollars a year.  This plan won't add one dime to the debt.  Lies all around.  Gotta pass this plan to find out what's in it...

Just keep pointing out that Obamacare is costing middle class people 4 or 5 grand more a year...and Pryor voted for it...and doesn't seem to be all that interested in repealing it....

Just keep pointing out that Obama and Pryor (who wasn't outraged about it) wanted to arm our friendly radical Islamist enemies in Syria to overthrow the Syrian gov... and send in troops to train terrorists...hey!... this should work on John McCain also...when the time comes.....

  SOON.

321 "303 Unless Cotton wants to go into the SoCon idiocy that cost Mourdock and Akin (ie rape and abortion) Pryor is toast." Get ready for questions like this from the media: "Mr. Cotton, if your daughters were gang-raped by AIDS infected al-Qaidea members while on board a swastika covered zeppelin, would you force your daughter to bring up the triplets are practicing Sunnis and more importantly would you circumcise those children without their consent and force them into a binary gender identity?" The proper response is of course: "Wait? A Zeppelin?" But seriously I wish the next time someone asks a Republican the rape question they just respond with "Fuck you."

340 Posted by: Naes1984 at December 04, 2013 08:16 PM (zeV2E) There are far more liberal mainstream denominations than the United Methodist Church. The standard in the "Book of Discipline" is that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with the Christian faith and UM ministers cannot perform gay weddings. It's not to say they don't but they will be brought up on charges if they do so. That will not change in the UMC in the US unless there is a break in the denomination and since there are a lot of Methodists in others countries the view about homosexuality will not change anytime soon. There are not too many comparisons between the Quaker faith and the UM as the only doctrine of the Quakers is the inner light and the, peace testimony.

344 The NRSC should refrain from issuing statements on races without at least giving the Republican candidate a heads-up.

Sure, Pryor is a hypocrite, but his defense was very predictable in the Bible Belt.  It's probably too far out from the election to make any difference, but this is the sort of misstep that could cost a close race if committed in the final days.

Posted by: Adjoran at December 04, 2013 09:38 PM (473jB)

345 Hi, I'm an Arkie and follow local politics fairly closely. Pryor's not a bad guy (we shared locker space at the downtown Y for several years before it closed), but he's toast this time around in Arkansas. The GOP can always screw up a steel bar, but they'd really have to work overtime to overcome the general disaffection that Pryor is facing (excluding true believers, of course). Arkansas seems to have about had it with democrats in general and political dynasty families in particular. There are very good reasons that Bildo and Hillary! rarely return to Arkansas.

This actually sets up well.  A third party gets to call this an out and out fraud, which of course that is, is that fucker Pryor holding on his Bible everytime PP commits an abortion, paid for by his favorite law obamacare?

But Cotton can come in and say, whoa foul play.  Even though one might suspect that Pryor's bible propaganda is bullshit, we need to respect all people's religious beliefs, and that criticism shouldn't be made.

I know my devotion to Jesus Christ is deep and I wouldn't want to be criticized for it.  Etc., etc.  Not a bad set up at all.

347 There was no way Todd Akin was going to lose, until he decided to start talking about rape... Posted by: rexbatt at December 05, 2013 12:18 AM (9NHfs) I think Akin was an NSA casualty. Mind you, there have been weirdo friends of Huckabee spouting this magical vagina theory before. but Akin had to know this wouldn't play. Notice his only campaign staff was family members and he had some ethics problems. I bet those problems went way deeper than any of us knew. McCaskill won him the nomination and then blackmailed him, and nothing his colleagues or friends could say would talk him down. Unless he was insane.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at December 05, 2013 07:49 AM (Y92Nd)

348 Ace,
As a former Arkansan and someone who actually knew Pryor's father and Mark's previous career, this is not going to be a big deal.  First, Mark won because his father was well liked and a good personal campaigner.  Mark is not.  He is stiff, prone to errors, and was basically a legacy guy like Lincoln Chafee in RI who was a pale shadow of his father.

Nevertheless, the RSC would do well to vacate the imperial city and relocate in somewhere like St. Louis.  First, it would scare off many of the urbanite malleable campaign consultants who would never dare actually live in a red state.  Second, it would remove the bubble that these people live in so that they actually had to relate to real folks.  An alternate would be relocate to the state of the senator who chair the RSC and move around.  Who knows, it might actually teach them about the diversity of this country (which is not the same as vibrancy).
