— Ace Oh well.
Kate Upton won't be forced to hide her religious values.
The stunning supermodel got a tattoo of a cross on her finger so she could always show her devotion to God, she explained in the September issue of Elle.
"I was at a photo shoot and I was wearing a cross necklace that my mom bought me, and somebody made a joke like, 'Why are you wearing a cross? Like you would be religious.' And then they took [my necklace] away,” Upton told the magazine. “I was really affected by that. The whole thing made me realize that I do want [a cross] with me, at all times."
She also says she's more intelligent than people give her credit for. Again: Oh well. Can't be perfect.
Now I'm going to link her Happy Easter video. The ostensible reason for my linking this is to expose her hypocrisy on religious values.
But that's not the real reason. That's just what we call an excuse.
Extraordinary. It's like Benny Hill was appointed my Guardian Angel and made all of my dreamiest dreams come true.
Thanks to @doreenhdickson.

Gives new meaning to:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death,
I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy
staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of
mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth

'Why are you wearing a cross? Like you would be religious.'
Right. Because showing off your God-given beauty in fashion magazines means you have to give up your religion, too. Because being a model = being an atheist whore. Right? That's the implication, isn't it?
You go, Kate!
Dumb. You show your devotion to God by acting in a godly manner.
Posted by: Waldo at August 08, 2013 01:46 PM (tCBZk)
I don't think this is about her showing her devotion to God so much as her wanting to have a physical touchstone of God's love with her at all times. I'm not big on tattoos, but this one I understand. It's one thing to feel God's love in your heart, but in difficult times sometimes it helps to have a visual reminder, too.

Methinks the necklace her mom gave her is the total extent of Kate Upton's "Christianity".

You know.
I've noticed this for a while. Younger people (which for me is people in their early twenties I suppose but even people my age.) Seem to think that there is no contradiction between "being religious" and "the sexualization of everything."
I've known many people over the years who say "I'm religious" then in the same paragraph will go "well it's just sex."
So this doesn't surprise me at all actually.
There's this halfway point between the postmodern rejection of religion and retro-virtue where religion isn't about morality anymore it's about "praying" and "believing" and that's enough.
I'm not saying that's a good thing, but I think it's a real thing.

There's also the point that she appears to most of the public in still photographs. For her, the easiest way to demonstrate her faith to the public at large is to display a physical symbol of it as a reminder to anyone who sees her photos of her faith.
Of course, that physical symbol on display would probably carry a lot more weight if she didn't frequently appear in photos wearing next to nothing.

Maybe. But she seems to think that its presence is important regardless. She might get it kept in.
It's also occurred to me that it might be for *her*. A visible reminder to her of her faith and the comfort that it provides her. After all, she got it because someone removed the cross she was wearing around her neck. She obviously thinks that having one at hand (no pun intended) will be useful.

As far as I'm aware, Kate Upton hasn't released a sex tape, hasn't starred in a porn film, hasn't passed out in a gutter from alcohol or a heroin, hasn't gone on an epithet-laden tirade aimed at police, bystanders, fans or photogs, and hasn't gotten knocked up for publicity.
What she HAS done is pose for photographs and various moving picture formats, at times in very little clothing, because she has a gorgeous figure.
I fail to see how that places her in the same "Tramp Camp" as, say, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, or Kim Kardashian. And I FURTHER fail to see how any of that would mean she's not really religious.

I suspect some are recalling Jesus' admonition that if one looks at a woman with lust in his heart, he has committed adultery with her. But as I'm not her confessor and she isn't indulging (so far as I know) in open mortal sin, then her relationship to the Almighty is not mine to question.

It's sort of the new "um". It stretches out your sentence in a way that gives you time to think what you're going to say next. I think there's also an imagined non-aggressiveness to it. If you speak too clipped and with certainty that's perceived as aggressive.

If one is trying to be religiously Christian, that is the wrong way to evaluate oneself. "Thank you God, that I am not a tax collector".
Not that running around trying to rate other people on the godly scale is a worthwhile activity. "For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
But since we're talking about religious practice, I wouldn't advise my nieces to model their lives after Kate's.

NOAA trims forecast for busy hurricane season
Fox NY: http://tinyurl.com/kp4x3d7
WASHINGTON (AP) — This Atlantic hurricane season may not be quite as busy as federal forecasters once thought, but they still warn of an unusually active and potentially dangerous few months to come.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration updated its hurricane season forecast Thursday, trimming back the number of hurricanes they expect this year to between six and nine. That's a couple less than they predicted back in May...
... "Make no bones about it, those ranges indicate a lot of activity still to come," said lead seasonal hurricane forecaster Gerry Bell of NOAA's Climate Prediction Center in College Park, Md. "We're coming to the peak of hurricane season now."
Hurricane season starts in June and runs until the end of November, but peak hurricane season runs from mid-August to mid-October...
You don't say? We should expect to get more activity this season because we're just entering the most active part of the season? By GOD! It all makes sense now!

She's old enough to have learned the mannerism in the 80's.
The 70's and the 80's sucked the feminine traits out of a lot of women then.

As I tell folks when they get feisty and start quoting Bible verses at me, "I'm a Catholic. We wrote the bible. We don't read it."

Absolutely, yes. Lots of people will tell me I'm not, but I am.
Part of the issue is we don't accept the Nicene Creed. Another issue is we believe in modern-day prophesy and that the Bible is only correct insofar as it is translated correctly, but is incomplete. People point to individual beliefs and say "That there, that's not Christian."
But we believe in a literal Christ, Jesus who is God's Only Begotten, who lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and was raised again perfect after three days. He is Christ, Redeemer, and Judge.

The Egerton Papyrus (like Thomas) is more along the lines of another witness to the events and sayings, so I take those more seriously.

According to a religious community in which I was raised, yes. I've mentioned that I grew up in the Evangelical Christian world. My father actually worked for a religious institution and it became a Major Issue when he started working there that my mother wore jeans outside the home. No, I'm not kidding.
----------------------------
Yeah, I did, too. My dad was associate pastor for one of those strip-mall non-denominational churches and my mom was also heavily involved at "The Cult Compound" as my brother and I nicknamed it.
One of those places where it is a point of pride to dress as sloppily and slovenly as possible for church to prove that you're nothing like those squares in the Catholic church, and yet extremely prudish at the same time.
So, to recap: dressing like Joe Shit the Ragman to worship Christ = GODLY
Wearing a bikini to the beach or listening to secular music = UNGODLY
So, yeah. Fuck off with that.

Empire of Jeff... just butting in long enough for a (probably unnecessary) reminder not to confuse the church with your faith or God.

What context do burkas fall into?
Posted by: polynikes at August 08, 2013 02:44 PM (m2CN7)
Good question. Is it sinful for a woman to show any part of her body?
That the answer to that question is "no" does not instantly make it "Christian" to show *all* parts of the body.
To offer my opinion, a godly standard of dress depends on event and culture. What's modest in the frozen North may not be practical in a tropical climate.
The bikini is inappropriate at Mass, though it could be acceptable at some other Christian event hosted at the beach.
It's certainly godly for a married couple to be nude in their own room. But a mode of dress that is godly in one context can be quite ungodly in another.

What does the Mormon think of the Christian who rejects the Book of Mormon and all of Joseph Smith's teachings?

Not a Mormon so don't know but I would wager it is a whole lot less judgemental than the fudamentalist Christians who believe Mormons are the children of Satan. Huckabee I'm looking at you.

I've got stuff in my life that conflicts with my religious ideals, every day. I'm not trying to put any one down just so I can be above them. I just happen to think immodesty is not in line with Christ's ideal for us. And since it's pretty much the thing she has as a career, it's going to be something she has to reconcile against her beliefs. Heck, maybe she has already and she's fine with it. My personal belief is that it gets in our way of being closer to God. But that's just, like, my opinion, man. I'm sorry if I came off judgy. I try not to, but I fail a lot, even when I try hard at things.

We believe almost all people have accepted some degree of the truth of God's word. We offer an invitation to all people to bring the truth that you have and to see if we can add to it. To anyone who rejects the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith's teachings we respect your decision and hope you will change your mind. We will let you worship in peace and hope you offer us the same courtesy.
Posted by: bonhomme at August 08, 2013 12:28 PM (QehQP)
Thanks for the response. Doesn't change my mind that you're not Christian, though.
On the one hand, Mormon "fixes" Christianity - but to those "defective" Christians who reject Mormonism, it's just "live and let live".
I'm not finding a love or concern for Truth in that answer, though it is a very polite and tolerant one. Truth, however, is very intolerant.
